REFUND & TRANSFER POLICY (Check refunds may take 4–6 weeks to process): Class/Workshop Refund Policy: Refunds will be made up to three days prior to class start date.

A $10 cancellation fee will be retained for each refund. Full refund will be given if class is cancelled due to low enrollment. Unused attendance is not transferable to another class session.

Excursion Refund Policy: Refunds will be granted up to one week before the excursion only if someone on the waiting list is available to take your place. There will be a $25 cancellation fee if a replacement can be found.

Class/Workshop Transfer Policy: Transfers will be approved up to three days prior to the class start date. A $10 transfer fee will be retained for each class/workshop. Students must receive a verbal approval from Community Services before transfer is complete.

PARKING INFORMATION • Parking permits are required Monday–Friday at Oceanside, Community Learning Center (CLC), Small Business Development Center, and San Elijo campuses. Permits are free to Community Services registrants. Parking permits are not required on weekends. Park in any lot marked student.

Arts Basic Jewelry Wire Wrapping

Stained Glass for Beginners

Have fun learning basic jewelry wire wrapping techniques in this exciting class. You will use sterling silver wire, beads and findings to make unique pieces of jewelry during this class. You will design and make earrings, a bracelet, and a wire-wrapped fused glass cabochon.

Supplies: A $40 materials fee will be collected in class. You may bring your own additional supplies.

Create your own beautiful stained glass art pieces and windows!

Learn the art of stained glass from a master cutter, right in his stained glass studio! In this comprehensive workshop, you will learn the basics of design and assembly, as well as the use of the tools needed to develop beautiful stained glass artwork. By the end of the workshop, you will have created one to three projects suitable for display or sale (depending on your speed and desire).

Supplies: A $30/project materials fee for glass, soldier, lead, and copper for 3 projects will be collected in class. On-site sales for tools available.

Fused Glass Jewelry Making What a great gift idea! Design and create dramatic pieces of jewelry.

If you love wearing jewelry or giving it as a gift, this workshop is for you! In this one-day, hands-on course, you will learn to fuse glass to create jewelry that reflects your unique style and taste. While using small glass-fusing kilns to make pins, earrings, pendants, and other types of jewelry, you will learn the basic principles of compatibility, kiln preparation, adhesives, slumping, and annealing.

Basic Cake Decorating This relaxed and friendly course takes you through the basics of using a variety of icings to decorate typical cakes for birthdays, graduations, etc. You will be shown techniques related to piping, use of modeling paste for flowers and ornaments, and the covering of cakes using a variety of icing tools and equipment. This class is a beginners level course and is perfect for either the recreational cake designer or the individual who wishes to gain professional experience.

Supplies: A $39 materials fee will be collected in class. Please bring a 12" metal frosting spatula, 10" serrated knife, plastic scraper/spatula, 10" round by 4" high yellow or white unfrosted cake, butter cream frosting, apron and kitchen towel.

Celebrate summer! Join passionate floral designer Jamie Kales, in this eclectic and novel approach to floral design. This hands-on workshop provides lots of individual attention.

Learn how color, context and texture tell the floral story. Build the confidence to create in a fun and relaxed atmosphere with a knowledgeable and inspired instructor whose design creed involves seeing beyond the obvious and taking the arrangement to the next level. If pollen and panache are your thing and you love taking home your arrangements to impress, pick your petals and move beyond the bloom in this unforgettable “throw the vase out the window” floral adventure!

Gardening and Landscaping with California Native Plants Tired of the maintenance and water demands of your yard? Planting the right natives will reduce or eliminate water usage and maintenance, and create lasting beauty. You will learn where to find natives, how and when to plant, which plants are fire-resistant, and how to choose the right plants to meet your needs. You will have the opportunity to develop a plan to convert all or part of your yard to natives. You will be contacted in the fall to meet at a nearby native plant nursery with demonstration gardens for a free tour.

Sewing: Beginning Dressmaking Whether a hobby, a necessity, or a business, learn this important skill in just 6 weeks!

Learn the fundamentals of the art of sewing, while getting joy from wearing something you made yourself! Cut and sew four very basic (but important) pieces of your wardrobe: t-shirt, skirt, slip and pants—at a fraction of the cost of store bought apparel. Through step-by-step demonstration and hands-on labs, students will get instruction on tools and equipment, hand sewing, pattern profile, personal size vs. standard measurements, and more! Build sewing skills that you can use for years to come.

Supplies: Please bring a tape measure, hand sewing needles, 1 spool of thread (any color), 1/2 yard of solid color linen, mechanical pencil and notebook. Instructor will discuss additional materials and tools at the first class.

Drawing & Painting The Art of Creative Painting By studying the masters and learning how they achieved greatness, you will discover and hone your own artistic abilities. Arts Drawing for Pleasure

Natural Way to Draw

If you can use a pencil, you can draw!

Artists and non-artists alike will gain more pleasure, confidence and skill at drawing from their imagination and observation with these success-oriented lessons. Explore the seven secrets of 3D illusion drawing. Learn a three part, symbol-making formula to create convincing drawings of any subject, be it people, landscape elements, flowers, shells, and more! Open to all skill levels.

The very basics of all art lies in the human figure. Create a work of art as you experience drawing with a life model. There will be short and long poses, gesture, contour, and anatomy. For the long poses, you can use watercolor, oil, or pastel.

Painting en Plein Air, Beginning Watercolor

Methods, Ideas, and Techniques in Watercolor No previous experience is necessary!!!

Approach painting with fresh inspiration as you learn to create radiant watercolors alive with color and light. Through stepby-step demonstrations, you will explore watercolor techniques, the use of bold color, the depiction of sunlight, and the control of edges while maintaining freedom in your works of art.

If you love the outdoors, nature, beauty, and just sitting and enjoying the views of our beautiful region, this class is perfect for you. Through instructor demonstrations and exercises, you will learn the basics of painting en plein air (painting outdoors) and a variety of techniques to paint the components of the landscape: rocks, water, views, skies, clouds, trees, bushes, and more. By the end of class you will have completed a painting worthy of framing!

Supplies: A $5 materials fee will be collected in class. Please bring paper, pencil, eraser, and a drawing board to the first class. A materials list will be provided at the first class meeting. Plan to spend from $50–$100, depending upon where you shop and if you have existing materials.

Arts Painting in Oils For the very beginning painter who can already draw to the intermediate level student who has already painted in oils.

Students will learn and/or review the use of value, shape, and color in creating oil paintings. Small-scale paintings and a limited palette will allow several techniques to be learned. There will be step-by-step demonstrations so each participant can achieve a level of personal expression.

Intermediate painters can choose to work independently or improve their basic skills with the rest of the class. Basic drawing skills are needed for all students.

Supplies: An $8 materials fee will be collected in class. A materials list will be included with your enrollment confirmation.

Watercolor Fundamentals Learn the basics of watercolor before you attempt a painting. This class will prepare the beginner with important fundamentals and techniques necessary to make a clean, fresh and creative watercolor painting. It is also a great refresher class for the intermediate watercolorist looking to improve existing skills. Bring a few sheets of paper, since we will be doing dozens of fun and informative lessons leading to a final painting. You will paint samples of skies, clouds, water, rocks, trees, houses, and animals. Many techniques will be learned including: wet into wet, dry brush, contrast, palette knife, lifting, negative painting, blossoming techniques and much more.

Photography You & Your Digital Camera Do you want to learn how to use your camera so you can take great pictures? Students will familiarize themselves with their cameras’ controls, what purpose they serve, and how to improve the quality of their photos. By the end of this class, students will be at ease with general photographic concepts; understand the features of their camera; have a better ”eye“ for seeing creative images; and produce better photographs.

Come learn how to become a notary public! Our intensive 6-hour seminar is designed to equip you with everything you need to know to become a safe and effective notary public. Children & Teens NEW! How Children Learn Math, Science, and Language Through Art For parents and teachers of children ages 2– 8.

Playing is not just for children! You can come and play with fellow teachers and parents in the community while exploring the importance of art and how it enhances math, science, and language skills and concepts in young children. We will explore collage, drawing, painting, sculpture, and other art media through hands-on experiences. Learning about the value of art can ultimately benefit young children by providing a foundation for future learning and success.

Writing Clinic As we implement the Reading Institute, we recognize that reading and writing skills go hand in hand. This summer we are offering two writing clinics for anyone going into 9th–12th grade. These courses will focus on writing skills, grammar, and using the internet to support your writing.

From Short Stories to Research Although writing a paper seems obsolete to most students, it is still an important part of education. Not only is it required throughout your schooling, but the skill will translate into successful business communication.

Get ready to soar above and beyond the clouds! Explore the history of flying machines and create your own unique aerial objects. Draw, paint, and craft as you discover how engineers study the science of flight. This is a beginninglevel aerospace class and the program is designed for those with little or no background knowledge of the principles of flight. You will learn the basics of airplanes, kites, hot air balloons, rockets, and spaceships. You will also build and launch several small model rockets and create an edible model of the space shuttle. Are you ready to ROCK?! Well, here is the class for you! Students will learn to play the music of famous rock groups, learn about the history of rock music, song form, pentatonic scales, power chords, and improvisation. You’ll learn how to reduce your risk of getting lost and how to react effectively with lifesaving actions if you have a backcountry emergency. Essential clothing and equipment will be examined.

HOGWARTS SCHOOL OF WIZARDRY

Learn to play traditional African and Latin rhythms on drums, bells, claves and shakers. Take an amazing “tour” through Ghana, West Africa and Cuba, and experience how music is the universal language. Students will learn proper drumming technique, basic music theory and how to read music. During the second week, students will learn all about and practice using a regular drum kit— with cymbals and all. This is definitely a drummer’s dream class! For the final class, students will perform individually and/or in small groups. You will need to bring a percussion instrument to class— preferably a hand drum (conga, bongos, djembe, etc.), bell (cow bell, etc.), shaker (maracas, etc.), guiro and/or claves.

Youth Music Academy DRUMS: FROM KITS TO CONGAS

Learn to play traditional African and Latin rhythms on drums, bells, claves and shakers. Take an amazing “tour” through Ghana, West Africa and Cuba, and experience how music is the universal language. Students will learn proper drumming technique, basic music theory and how to read music. During the second week, students will be learn all about, and practice using, a regular drum kit—with cymbals and all. This is definitely a drummer’s dream class!

For the final class, students will perform individually and/or in small groups. Youth Music Academy GUITAR — ACOUSTIC You need to bring an acoustic guitar.

Our guitar class is all about having fun and music, music and more music.

This unique program will provide an exciting environment where you actively participate in a wide range of guitar— based techniques. This is a beginning guitar class where you will learn the basics of guitar, learn single notes, basic chords, melodies, and general music theory. You will also learn classical finger style, how to read guitar tablature, and chord charts. By the end of the class, you will be on your way to playing your favorite songs!

MiraCosta College Driver Training Program The best program in North County To get your driver’s license in the state of California, there are two requirements if you are under 18: 1) Classroom Driver Education and 2) Behind-the-Wheel Driver Training. Learning to ride a horse is a luxury many of us want, but few of us have. This is wonderful opportunity for you to learn about horses, grooming, horsemanship, and begin riding in a safe and beautiful environment. Horseback riding also helps build confidence and responsibility, soothes and releases stress, provides exercise, and develops a strong bond between you and horses.

Fencing for Everyone Beginning and intermediate students welcome!

This class focuses on the Olympic sport of saber fencing — often called ”physical chess“ for its exciting blend of athletics and strategy. You will learn (or hone) skills in how to do advances, retreats, lunges, and how to do attacks and parry-ripostes for defense.

We will finish with a mini-tournament for all participants during the last class session.

Through group and pair activities, you will practice new skills and develop confidence.

This class will develop your flexibility, improve muscle tone, and provide a fun, cardio workout. Intermediate students will learn about tactics and will bring their skills to a higher level. Please be prepared to engage in moderately strenuous physical activity in each class.

Traditional Yoga

Want to tee up with your friends, meet new people, or play with business associates? This fun and educational class will go through the basics. Beginners will learn the fundamentals of the golf swing, specializing in the grip, stance, and proper technique. Each lesson will cover a specific topic such as putting, chipping, sand shots, irons and driver. Learn this great game so you never have to say no to a golf invitation again!

Supplies: A $20 materials fee will be collected in class. Students should either bring their own clubs or be prepared to rent from the facility.

Throughout the class, we will practice a series of asanas (yoga postures). We will progress gradually through the series, introducing new postures. Each session will begin with breathing exercises to help increase lung capacity and respiratory function. We will follow with a series of warm-up exercises to increase blood circulation and lubricate the joints. We will proceed with postures that will release deep body tension, bring balance to the nervous system, stimulate internal organ function, strengthen and stretch the body.

We will always conclude the class resting in savasana, a relaxation posture used to allow the body to absorb the benefits of our practice as well as promote inner peace and mental calmness. Try not to eat for 2 hours before class.

MiraCosta Community Ser vices is excited to offer this PADI open water scuba certification course. This class is performance-based, so students must pass all PADI requirements before completion (classroom instruction, including Project AWARE material; paper-based testing; diving exposure in a pool; and open water diving experience). Three art galleries and a library showcase magnificent collections of paintings, sculptures, rare books, manuscripts, and decorative art. The spectacular botanical garden collection, which will be in full bloom this time of year, features over 14,000 different species of plants. The Huntington was founded in 1919 by railroad and real estate developer Henry Edwards Huntington, and opened to the public in 1928. Highlights of the collection include the Ellesmere manuscript of Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales (c.1410), a Gutenberg Bible (c.1455), Thomas Gainsborough’s masterpiece The Blue Boy (c.1770), and Rogier van der Weyden’s Madonna and Child (15th century). On display in the Virginia Steele Scott Galleries of American Art, The Huntington’s American art collection includes works from the 1690s to the 1950s, including important paintings such as Mary Cassatt’s Breakfast in Bed, Frederic Edwin Church’s Chimborazo, Edward Hopper’s The Long Leg, and John Singer Sargent’s Portrait of Pauline Astor. Held annually in Laguna Beach, the pageant recreates great works of art with living models.

This theatrical phenomenon is made possible by some 500 volunteer cast members and backstage workers. Viewing will be excellent from our loge-section seating. The day will include time to browse through the Festival of Arts grounds and also visit the Sawdust Festival or Art-a-Fair, offering a variety of paintings, creative arts, beautiful jewelry, and fine crafts. The pageant is presented at 8:30 p.m. in an outdoor amphitheatre, so warm clothing is recommended. Enjoy dinner on your own in beautiful downtown Laguna Beach (within walking distance) or dine at the restaurant on the festival grounds.

HOW TO ENROLL IN TUITION-FREE ADULT CLASSES Enrollment for Tuition-Free Noncredit Courses for Adults begins May 10, 2010. Students are enrolled on a first-come, first-served basis. Students may now use the SURF online enrollment system. Parking and materials fee may be paid on SURF using Visa, MasterCard or Discover Card.

HOW TO APPLY AND ENROLL IN CLASSES Applying for Admission If you are a new student or if you are a returning student who did not attend classes in Spring 2010 you must first submit a Noncredit Application for Admission. This may be a new registration procedure for you. Please call (760) 795-8710 if you need assistance.

ENROLLING IN CLASSES ON SURF Who can use SURF? 1 Students who were enrolled at MiraCosta Spring 2010 may enroll using SURF on or after May 10, 2010.

2 New students or returning MiraCosta students who were not enrolled in Spring 2010 but have submitted the Noncredit Application for Admission and have waited 3 –4 business days for the application to be processed.

3 The last day to add a class is June 25, 2010.

FLEXIBLE ENTRY FOR CCENT— CCNA On-Campus The flexible entry format of these classes is designed to fit many schedules. It allows for late enrollment and early finish but it is NOT an online class.

Courses are offered in a self-paced format. Students will arrange their own test deadlines during the orientation session. The following instructional resources will be available: dedicated lab with instructors, mini-lectures, lab time, practice tests, text and multimedia computer tutorials, and one-to-one tutoring. Students must complete a 90-minute orientation in CLC133 within the first week of the semester (late adds have three days following registration) or they may be dropped.

OLDER ADULTS

State-supported educational programs for older adults range in subject from art to writing. While these courses are offered primarily for senior citizens at locations and times convenient to them, the classes are open to all adults, regardless of age.

ADULT HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA PROGRam

The Adult High School Diploma Program is designed for students 18 years of age or older who wish to complete the requirements for a high school diploma or prepare to take the GED. Those under 18 who can benefit from instruction are also allowed to enroll. Any student enrolled in a day high school (regular or continuation) must meet the following criteria in order to take classes in MiraCosta’s Adult High School Diploma Program. He/she must be a credit or CAHSEE-deficient student, 17 years old or older, who has attended at least five semesters of high school. Day high school students must also present a Concurrent Enrollment Permit signed by their day high school principal, counselor, and parent. The forms are available at high school counseling offices, the Community Learning Center (CLC), at MiraCosta’s Admissions Offices, and online at www.miracosta.edu/ahsdp.

In order to place students in courses that best meet their needs, individual skills will be assessed.

Those who need to improve their reading to be successful in courses for high school credit may take courses designed for that purpose. English, reading, and math courses are also appropriate for persons who do not need a high school diploma but wish to increase their skills in preparation for college classes, for employment or advancement in the workplace, or for personal growth.

Classes are held at MiraCosta College Community Learning Center, located at 1831 Mission Avenue in Oceanside. Counselors are available to assist students. To see a counselor or get more information call (760) 795-8710, Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Saturday 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE PROGRAM The goal of this program is to aid speakers of other languages gain fluency in English. Students learn English which helps them function effectively in family, community, work and academic settings. Conversation is emphasized at the beginning levels, but reading, writing and the structure of the language are introduced as students gain proficiency. Bilingual instructional aides are available at all sites.

General Information Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA)

Selective Service—Important Notice For Male Students

All student records of MiraCosta College are kept in accordance with the provisions of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.

Federal law requires men 18 through 25 years of age to be registered with the Selective Service System (SSS). The law applies to male citizens and immigrant aliens, but not to foreign students who hold valid student visas. Registration forms are available at any U.S. Post Office or online at www.sss.gov.

A student may request access to those campus records which personally identify the student; the student may challenge the accuracy of the record or the appropriateness of its retention in the college records. Regardless of age, student consent is needed for the release of records covered by the act to outside parties except for those agencies entitled to access under the provisions of the act (e.g., college officials; other schools; federal, educational and auditing officers; and requestors in connection with the application or receipt of financial aid). These provisions apply to records received and used after November 19, 1974.

Amendments to the act permit the college to release what is called “directory information,” provided that the student or former student has not specifically asked the college to refrain from releasing such information. Check with the Admissions and Records Office for specific directory information and notification of student rights.

If you wish directory information not to be released without your prior written consent, please indicate on the college application or send a signed request to the Admissions and Records Office, Sta. 10A, MiraCosta College, 1 Barnard Drive, Oceanside CA 92056.

Federal Tax Credit In accordance with federal tax credit legislation, MiraCosta College will mail a verification 1098T form at the end of January to each registered student. Information will also be reported to the IRS. If you did not provide your correct Social Security number to the Admissions and Records Office, complete a change of information form to ensure accurate reporting to the IRS. Please check with your tax preparer to determine if you are eligible to take advantage of this credit and the amount you may deduct. 1098 information may be accessed on your SURF account by selecting Finances.

Smoking and Drug Use MiraCosta College allows smoking in designated smoking areas only and imposes sanctions against the use of illegal drugs. Designated smoking areas are clearly marked with signs posted at each campus; the campus maps in this schedule show where these areas are located.

Student Right-to-Know Rates In compliance with the Student-Right-to-Know and Campus Security Act of 1990 (Public Law 101542), it is the policy of the MiraCosta Community College District to make available its completion and transfer rates to all current and prospective students. Beginning in fall 2004, a cohort of all certificate-, degree-, and transferseeking first-time, full-time students were tracked over a three-year period. Their completion and transfer rates are listed below. These rates do not represent the success rates of the entire student population at MiraCosta College, nor do they account for student outcomes occurring after this three-year tracking period.

Based upon the cohort defined above, 28.99 percent attained a certificate or degree or became “transfer prepared” during a three year period, from fall 2004 to spring 2007. Students who are “transfer prepared” have completed 56 transferable units with a GPA of 2.0 or better.

Based on the cohort defined above, 23.19 percent transferred to another postsecondary institution (UC, CSU, or another California community college) prior to attaining a degree, certificate, or becoming “transfer-prepared” during a five-semester period, from spring 2005 to spring 2007.
