Program Registration & Facility Rentals

To register for programs or reserve a park facility, visit mypark.portagemi.gov and click on the button . Reservations can also be made in person at Portage Parks & Recreation, located at 320 Library Lane . Registration for programs listed in this guide open on April 1, 2025, unless otherwise noted .

Portage Parks Foundation

Portage Cultural Arts Committee

The Portage Cultural Arts Committee is a subcommittee of the Portage Park Board focused on expanding the arts in Portage . Members of the committee have opportunities to be part of public art concept reviews and participate in art exhibitions, events, workshops, and festivals . Roll into summer with a bike ride through the scenic Portage trail system . From April 1 to October 31, start your ride at the BIKEPORTAGE station on the Portage Creek Bicentennial Park Trail, just north of the Celery Flats Pavilion . Simply download the MOVATIC app from the Apple Store or Google Play, create an account, and follow the prompts to pay and unlock a bike . 8600 South Sprinkle Road, 1/2 mile south of Centre Avenue

Ramona Park Beach features a sandy swimming area with lifeguards, kayak, canoe, and paddleboard rentals . Enjoy additional amenities such as concessions, picnic areas, beach volleyball, a playground, changing rooms, and more! Vehicle permits for entry into Ramona Park can be purchased on-site near the park entrance during regular beach hours . City of Portage residents can receive a FREE annual resident pass with proof of residency .

Fish Camp

Fish camp explorers cast into the great outdoors to GO FISHING! Learn about environmental conservation and make fishing memories to last a lifetime . Campers will participate in hands-on activities and receive expert instruction covering the essentials of fishing . Topics include fish identification, habitat, knot tying, rod rigging, casting techniques, fishing safety, live bait rigging, and aquatic conservation . Each session is tailored to the age group and skill sets of participants .

Advanced topics include fishing techniques, advanced knots, fly fishing, boater safety, canoe fishing, lure making, fishing and boating regulations, and a field trip .

Kids Try It! Sports

Kids will have a blast playing a variety of fun sports, practicing different skills, and experiencing a wide range of outdoor sports activities . Learn the basic principles of a new sport each week and develop gross motor skills over this five-week session while learning the value of fair play, sportsmanship, and teamwork . Two classes are offered for kids ages 4 to 5 and ages 6 to 7. Maximum of 20 participants in each class .

Adventure Quest

Are you ready to thrive in the great outdoors? If you want to master essential wilderness skills, this program is for you! Designed for students ages 9 to 12, this outdoor adventure experience teaches vital skills like fire building, shelter construction, navigation, and "Leave No Trace" practices, led by instructors from Kalamazoo College Outdoor Leadership Training Center Through handson activities and teamwork, participants will gain confidence, respect for nature, and the ability to thrive in outdoor environments Each day may include a daily hike and varying outdoor activities (weather permitting), so be sure to wear appropriate clothing Space is limited to 20 students

Hike with a Biologist: Woodcock Walk

Join the Michigan Department of Natural Resources on a guided hike to observe one of Michigan’s early spring spectacles, the American woodcock courtship dance This dramatic dance is one of the most unique wildlife viewing opportunities in Michigan each spring Just after dusk on the edge of a grassy area, listen for the call of the timberdoodle – as the woodcock is also known – followed by a spiraling aerial performance All ages are welcome Attendees should bring their binoculars and headlamps or flashlights Participants are also encouraged to bring a portable chair for viewing and rubber boots or waterproof footwear as ground conditions may be muddy

Ranger Hike: Conservation Quest

Celebrate Endangered Species Day with a walk through Bishop’s Bog, a unique wetland ecosystem that provides crucial habitat for rare and endangered species, like migratory birds, carnivorous plants, terrestrial turtles, and more . During this hike, you will learn how wetlands help protect endangered species and about invasive species removal and conservation efforts taking place in the area . This hike is open to all ages, but please note that it is a four-mile hike through woods and wetlands . Please wear weather-appropriate clothing and close-toed shoes for a comfortable experience .

Ranger Hike: Reptilian Rhapsodies

It’s the season of the reptile! Get ready for World Snake Day (July 16) and join Park Rangers on an adventure to discover the wonderful world of snakes, salamanders, lizards, turtles, frogs, and toads . Learn which species live right in your backyard and find out how you can help these critters thrive . All ages are welcome . Please wear close-toed shoes and weather-appropriate clothing . This hike will be approximately 1 . 5 miles .

Geo Mystery Tours

Put on your thinking cap, grab your compass or GPS, and get ready - it’s geocaching time! Join the story at any time, but be sure to complete all adventures by the end of the month . Each week, registered participants will receive starting GPS coordinates and secret instructions via email . Visit each cache station to uncover clues and solve the mystery!

Starting May 1, participants can collect as much garlic mustard as possible from any Portage Park and bring it to Portage Parks & Recreation (320 Library Lane) for weigh-in . The program ends at 12 PM on May 30, so don’t miss your chance to contribute and compete for prizes!

Stewardship Day

Join us in celebrating National Public Lands Day a little early by giving back to your local public lands at the Gourdneck State Game Area Roll up your sleeves and gain hands-on experience in land stewardship by removing invasive species like Glossy Buckthorn Your efforts will help the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) and the Michigan United Conservation Clubs (MUCC) create space for native plants to thrive Bring your work gloves and gear, and come ready to make a difference! Close-toed, waterproof footwear, waders, and waterproof pants are highly recommended Be prepared to work outdoors for at least three hours Lunch and all necessary supplies for invasive species removal will be provided

Leaf-A-Legacy: Tree Donation Program

In the aftermath of the devastating May 7, 2024 tornado, the City of Portage, with support from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR), is continuing its mission to restore the city’s tree canopy and green spaces The storm caused widespread damage, resulting in the loss of thousands of trees across parks and neighborhoods This critical funding supports reforestation efforts to enhance environmental resilience and restore Portage’s natural beauty Residents, businesses, and volunteers are invited to participate in the Leaf-A-Legacy program by sponsoring a tree or joining community tree-planting events . Every tree planted will improve air quality, provide shade, support wildlife, and contribute to Portage’s recovery . Together, we can create a healthier, greener future for generations to come .

How to Get Involved:

» Volunteer: Help plant trees during community events and make a lasting impact on Portage’s environment (see opportunity below)

» Sponsor a Tree: Donations to the Leaf-A-Legacy program directly fund tree planting efforts throughout the city’s parks and public spaces . Each donor will receive a personalized certificate, which can also honor or memorialize someone special . Additional recognition is available based on your level of giving . Tailored to students with special needs and artists of all abilities, Creative Corners allows participants to follow a lead artist through projects and experiment with artistic expression . These one-hour workshops feature special art topics providing artists with the opportunity to explore different mediums to develop their unique artistic practice . Space is limited . Please wear clothing that can get messy, as students will explore different artistic mediums . The program fee covers all materials . Participants are encouraged to bring a chaperone . The registration fee is waived for chaperones . Artwork designed during this program may be featured in future art exhibits .

Forest Bathing

Join Kerri Barker from Nourish Nature Connection to explore the world of Shinrin-yoku, the Japanese practice of Forest Bathing . This program aims to help participants slow down and enjoy the wonderful world around us . Learn the art of looking inward and ways to release stress, and explore the potential health benefits of Forest Bathing . Participants will have seated time on mats on the grass and will walk approximately a quarter-mile during class . Participants are encouraged to bring their own mats or blankets . This program is designed for participants 16 years and older, with a maximum of 24 participants .

Qigong

Practice Qigong on the beach! Baduanjin Qigong, a traditional Chinese exercise system, is great for beginners . This 10-week wellness program blends gentle movement, breathing, and meditation to promote flexibility, circulation, and mental clarity . Instructor, Tao Ping with the Chinese American Association of Greater Kalamazoo, will guide participants through Qigong sessions, offering insights into the history and cultural significance of Qigong . This program is for ages 5 and up .

Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) Yoga

Combine your love for nature, adventure, and yoga with Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) yoga Whether you are a first-time paddleboarder or an experienced yoga practitioner, this class is for you Led by Kaitlyn VanDermeer, a certified and experienced SUP Yoga Instructor from KP Fitness, each session begins on land with an introduction to SUP equipment and safety After a short paddle, anchor and flow through a relaxing session At the end of the class, students will have time to unwind and soak up the sun before paddling back to shore Space is limited, so register now to secure your spot The registration fee includes one class, plus the use of a paddleboard, paddle, life jacket, and anchor This program is open to participants ages 16 and up

Experience a community-based, sound immersion journey with Wind Willow Consortium . Led by consortium members, this experience combines informative guidance and soothing melodies using a variety of instruments designed to evoke deep relaxation . Participants will experience the therapeutic benefits of sound therapy in a tranquil group setting . Participants are encouraged to bring a blanket, pillow, or cushion for added comfort . This program is designed for ages 12 and up, with participants between the ages of 12 and 15 requiring accompaniment by an adult or chaperone . Space is limited to 30 participants .

Chinese Tea Ceremony

Join Senior Tea Master, Tao Ping from the Chinese American Association of Kalamazoo for an enriching introduction to Chinese tea culture . This two-hour class will explore the art of tea brewing, the history of tea in China, and the health benefits of this timeless beverage . Participants will gain hands-on experience brewing various tea types while learning the philosophy behind the Chinese tea ceremony . Tea sets, a selection of teas, and tea snacks will be provided . A minimum of 6 students with a maximum of 10 is required . This activity is open to ages 13 and up .

Portage Community Art Award Exhibition

CULTURAL PROGRAMS

Help build a strong sense of community at Friday at the Flats (FATF) Applications are being accepted for an exciting new opportunity where community businesses, service providers, nonprofits, entertainers, crafters, etc . can engage with attendees at this season's FATF.

This opportunity allows those participating to showcase or provide information about their business or service, present programs or lesson offerings, introduce educational pursuits and specialized training programs, sell arts, crafts, or creations, and much more . This is also a chance for performers to spotlight their talents and interact by exhibiting their skills such as magic shows, comedy skits, dance skills, stilt walkers, performance art, etc .

FATF is a FREE family-friendly event at Celery Flats that is open to the public offering a place to enjoy music performed by local musicians, a variety of food trucks selling their delicious fare, and a fun way to bring family and friends together in a wonderful outdoor community atmosphere . Farm Tours

Discover the story behind the food you buy at the Portage Farmers Market through an engaging Farm Tour series . Throughout the season, visit two farms, giving you the chance to see where your food originates . Experience seasonal farm activities and connect with local farmers . Tours begin and end at Portage Parks & Recreation, where participants will board a bus to the farm . Each tour offers a unique experience . Please wear closed-toed shoes and dress for the weather .

Springtime Activities at Full Circle Farm

Learn about eco-friendly practices and sustainable farming on this walking tour of Full Circle Farm (15352 Gleason Road, Three Rivers) . Participants will feed farm animals, learn how to compost with worms, and tour the fields and greenhouses to see what happens on a farm in the springtime . Guests can also help the bees and other pollinators by planting flowers . At the end of the trip, everyone goes home with a goodie bag of fresh produce . This program is designed for participants ages 8 and up .
