NSSF’S STEVE SANETTI SAYS INDUSTRY HEALTHY DESPITE ECONOMY he overall economy has been down, but the firearms industry has remained healthy, and that translates to more business and additional benefit to wildlife. Just ask Steve Sanetti, president of the National Shooting Sports Foundation. He spoke to Northwest Sportsman for this special SHOT Show preview issue, and it was an upbeat conversation.

where it is more affordable, and more people are hunting. In 24 states, hunting license sales are up. “That trend reversed a 20-year decline in license sales,” he said. Expect this good news to be part of Sanetti’s remarks during the annual State of the Industry address, and during a Tuesday morning press conference. It’s going to be a busy SHOT Show,
“Generally,” he noted, “when times are tough there is a time when gun sales stay strong and then they bottom out, but that’s not what’s happening at all this time around. We’ve had 18 months of consecutive year-over-year growth.” Sanetti said there are a variety of reasons for this steady growth, not the least of which is the economy. It keeps people closer to home, they are likely to spend more money to hunt and shoot
with a somewhat different appearance. This year, the show covers some 625,000 square feet of floor space, and there are slightly wider aisles. A few companies were actually asked to reduce the size of their booths to make room for more exhibitors. Thus, the SHOT Show remains the largest show in the industry, with tens of thousands of people gathering in Las Vegas for the four-day event.

This year, visitors will see more signage and electric signs pointing the way to different show sections.There’s a new escalator added to the Sands Convention Center to make moving between the two show levels that much easier. And perhaps most important of all, exhibitors will be essentially in the same location this year as they were last year. The entrance hallway has also been cleared out and the exhibitors have been moved inside the exhibit hall. Another factor in the continued health of the industry, Sanetti suggested, probably is influenced with a growing interest in gun ownership, accompanied by a decline in support for gun control. “Support for gun control has never been lower,” he said, “and support for shooting and hunting has never been higher.” More women are getting involved in shooting and hunting as well. It has become socially acceptable for women to own and use firearms. Of course, since the Supreme Court has twice ruled that the right to keep and bear arms is an individual civil right, concealed carry has continued to gain traction. With the addition of Wisconsin in 2011, only one state, Illinois, remains where there is no kind of legal carry option. Sales of concealable defensive handguns continue to rise. Some estimates place the number of legally licensed citizens at more than 6 million, and that number will likely keep climbing. In Sanetti’s words, “The Supreme Court has ruled that the Second Amendment means what it says.” Another component of industry’s continued success is youth involvement. “There are more sports activities for young people,” Sanetti revealed.“Scouting is emphasizing shooting again, and the 4H is somewhat more involved.” continued on page 20

SHOT•SHOW 2012 RAAHAUGE ANNOUNCES DATES FOR ANNUAL SHOOTING FAIR, YOUTH SAFARI he industry this week is getting a first look at new guns and gear from all over the map, but come June, thousands of people — ultimately consumers — can get a hands-on experience with many of these firearms at the annual Raahauge’s Shooting Sports Fair in Corona, Calif. According to Mike Raahauge, for more than 20 years this shooting fair has attracted huge crowds that spend three days at his property, where children are admitted free, and they go through tens of thousands of rounds of ammunition, BBs and paintballs. Last year, he said 20,000 people attended the Shooting Sports Fair, and they got to meet representatives from literally all of the major firearms companies. “There is nothing else like this in the United States,” Raahauge told Northwest Sportsman. “We get very good industry support, and where else can you go and shoot everybody’s gun and not have to

buy it?” As usual, this year’s event — scheduled June 1-3 — will be a joint operation with the staff at Turner’s Outdoors, whose involvement isn’t just smart business, it is an investment for the future, and not just for the store. Visitors to the Shooting Sports Fair become customers, if they are not already, and if they are accompanied by their children, that may translate to a couple of generations of customers. There are manufacturers’ representatives, firearms instructors and other experts at the event, and there are also seminars over the course of the weekend, discussing big game and waterfowl hunting, upland wing shooting and various other shooting activities. But it doesn’t stop there. The annual Raahauge’s Youth Safari Day is scheduled July 21 this year. Last year, the event drew 4,000 youngsters, and their parents, for a day of activities that included a unique
opportunity to shoot at remote-controlled model airplanes with paintball guns. Raahauge estimated that 80,000 paintballs were used in that single day. The Youth Safari is a week prior to the California State Sporting Clays shoot, Raahauge noted. He expects approximately 450 shooters for that event, and noted that this year there will be an additional $5,000 in prize money. There will be firearms awarded in every class, and right now Raahauge is looking for additional sponsors for the various shooting stations. Raahauge’s Shooting Enterprises 14995 River Road Dept. SHOT•SHOW 2012 THE EVOLVING FRED HALL SHOWS By Bart Hall n 1945, the year of my birth, Fred Hall, my father, had the idea to produce a “sportsman’s show.” He began at Gilmore stadium in Los Angeles and a few years later moved to the Pan Pacific Auditorium. Over the years the show has evolved and moved to various locations in the Los Angeles Metroplex area. 36 years ago he added another show in San Diego, originally downtown at Golden Hall, but for the last 34 years it has been at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Originally the shows featured all forms of “outdoor recreation.” Over the years, in an effort to separate himself from the plethora of “sportsman’s shows” that copied his ideas, Fred Hall changed the name of the shows to the Western Fishing Tackle & Boat Shows. These shows have become the preeminent consumer fishing shows in the world. They have been sold out for over 20 years. The name of the shows became basically meaningless because, over time, they were simply called the Fred Hall

Shows by local attendees and the local media. In 2009 the boat business in the United States went into a serious decline. The vast majority of boat dealers in California went out of business. Those that remained solvent were forced to take smaller exhibit spaces in the shows. This provided the Fred Hall Shows with an opportunity to expand the parameters of the shows. There was suddenly enough space to begin to seriously consider the shooting sports and all forms of outdoor recreation as poten-
tial exhibitors. Over 60 percent of all Fred Hall Show attendees participate in the shooting sports. Because of the huge crowds that attend these events, that means that the Fred Hall Shows attract more shooters than any other shows in the west. So, officially in 2010, we changed the name of the shows to “The Fred Hall Shows” and in 2011 we changed it again to, “The Fred Hall Shows…the Ultimate Outdoor Experience”. The Fred Hall Shows now, once again, incorporate all forms of outdoor recreation including: fishing; hunting; shooting sports; boating; travel; camping; free diving and SCUBA diving. These are large shows, with large avid crowds. You can’t stand in front of more potential customers in the outdoor recreation business at any other events. The show dates for 2012 are: “The Fred Hall Show…The Ultimate Outdoor Experience,” at the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center, March 7-11, 2012 and the “Fred Hall Show…The Ultimate Outdoor Experience” at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, March 22-25, 2012. S
eventy-five years ago this month, a small group of avid waterfowlers took bold action to help restore waterfowl populations devastated by drought and wetland drainage. Led by printing magnate Joseph Palmer Knapp and other members of the More Game Birds in American Foundation, these conservation pioneers founded a new organization with the singular mission of protecting and restoring wetlands in Canada, where the majority of the continent's waterfowl are raised. A year after outlining their plan, the dream of Knapp and his colleagues became a reality. Ducks Unlimited, Inc.—the U.S.-based entity that would serve to gather and disperse funds—was incorporated on January 29, 1937, in Washington, D.C. Ducks Unlimited Canada, the entity that would actually carry out the founders' ambitious plan, was incorporated shortly thereafter in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on March 10. “First Nation-Wide Organization of Wild Fowlers Completed” was the headline of the inaugural issue of the Ducks Unlimited quarterly in April 1938. To raise funds for its conservation work, DU immediately began

working to organize a volunteer committee in each state, under the guidance of a competent state chairman, assisted by one or more vice chairmen and other officers. Each state committee had a financial target they had to accept and try to meet. Unlike today's DU, early “membership” was in the form of five-year “subscriptions”—the same method used by More Game Birds. The length of these pledges would help facilitate long-range planning—knowing how much money was coming down the road would allow DU Canada to plan for projects several years in advance. Now, 75 years later, DU’s founders would be proud of what their organization has accomplished for waterfowl. Supported by legions of dedicated volunteers, DU has raised more than $3.3 billion to conserve more than 12.4 million acres of wetlands and other waterfowl habitat across North America. This noble conservation tradition will continue this year as Ducks Unlimited celebrates its 75th Anniversary. Highlights will include DU's 75th national convention, which will serve as a homecoming for past
and present DU volunteers and staff the weekend of May 30−June 2, 2012, in Nashville. For example, all current and former state chairmen will be invited to attend a special night of fellowship at the Gaylord Resort and Convention Center in the Music City. Throughout this anniversary year, special event merchandise, including three commemorative dinner guns and an all-star art package, will be available at DU events nationwide. Diamond Anniversary project dedications will be held in each state to celebrate DU’s conservation work. A special historical episode of DUTV will air on the Outdoor Channel. And of course, stay tuned to Ducks Unlimited magazine and ducks.org/75 for special anniversary coverage. And The Ducks Unlimited Story—a hardcover book by Michael Furtman— tells the story of Ducks Unlimited’s first 75 years, from its founding in 1937 to the generations of sportsmen who made DU the greatest conservation organization in history. It also includes never-beforeseen pictures and documents recently discovered in DU’s archives.

During this week’s SHOT Show, the Idaho Department of Fish & Game, and the Idaho Department of Commerce are partnering in an exhibit just to tell the industry all about the Gem State. It’s not difficult to understand why so many outdoorsmen and women visit Idaho, and many go there to stay. One can still purchase general deer and elk tags, and there are opportunities to hunt and fish. At the right time of year, one can go after salmon and steelhead, hunt chukar or other upland birds or big game, or waterfowl if one times it right. That takes a bit of studying and planning, of course!
Indeed, there is some kind of hunting and fishing opportunity year-round in the Gem State, from varmints to big game. IDFG has seven regional offices and the main headquarters is in Boise. Staff personnel at these offices are helpful and they enjoy talking to sportsmen and -woman. Idaho has good populations of whitetail and mule deer, elk, black bear and other big game. This year Colt is introducing a new rifle model that is a collaboration with Magpul featuring some of that company’s top accessories for the AR platform, under the Colt Defense LLC brand. Colt has also announced five new California-compliant rifle models. The new Colt Defense-Magpul model is built on the Law Enforcement carbine platform. It has a retracted buttstock, MOE vertical grip and handguard, Generation 2 rear Back-Up Sight, MOE trigger guard and a pair of Magpul 30-round polymer magazines.
Weighing 6.8 pounds, it measures 30.5 inches. The rear Back-Up Sight is spring-loaded to pop up fast from the folded position, while the hand grip has a compact design with a more vertical grip angle. This new rifle is available in black, dark earth, or with contrasting Magpul parts. All models are available with a “bullet button” to make them California compliant. The other new additions are also California compliant.
In addition to the three models listed above, Colt offers its Model LE6920CA carbine with a bullet button so it is state compliant for commercial sale to private citizens. The Model LE6920CA weighs 6.95 pounds and measures 35.5 inches overall with a 16-inch barrel. There’s also the Model LE6940CA built on the M4 platform is slightly less heavy with its one-piece monolithic rail extending from the receiver to the front sight. Introduced at mid year but making its official debut during this week’s SHOT Show, the Ruger 77/357 bolt-action rifle is one of two entries worth a gander. The other is the left-hand version of the popular Gunsite Scout Rifle. Ruger’s Model 77/357 is cham-
bered for the .357 Magnum cartridge. It has a five-
model that will fit young and smaller-framed shooters. The new Tac 2 has a chrome-lined 4150 lightweight barrel with a Panther flash suppressor, Magpul ACS stock, MOE grip, trigger guard and a new M111moduler free-float rail system. Then there’s the Tactical Precision Rifle, which is reminiscent of the SDMR model that was discontinued three years ago. It has a bead-blasted 416 stainless steel HBAR barrel with an AAC blackout flash suppressor, the M111modular free-float rail system and B5 Systems stock. It also has a Magpul MOE grip and trigger guard. DPMS also offers the Lite LR-308 rifle. This one has a 24-inch 416 stainless lightweight fluted barrel and a carbon-fiber free-float tube improved for 2012. It also features an A3 receiver and it is chambered for the .308 Win. The Compact Hunter has a B5 SOPMOD retractable stock that will fit youth and women better. It has a 16inch Teflon-coated stainless barrel and carbon-fiber free-float tube. It also has a Hogue pistol grip, flattop with rail and it is available in all current hunter calibers.

Barrett continues to dominate the big-bore shooting scene in 2012, and that momentum can be credited in large part to rifles currently in production, the M107A1, the MRAD and the REC7 PDW (for Personal Defense Weapon). The M107A1 is chambered for the .50 BMG cartridge, and it is 4 pounds lighter than the military M107 rifle. It comes from the factory ready for a suppressor, and it has a round four-port muzzle brake that is designed to interface with that suppressor. This big rifle has an aluminum upper receiver, specific titanium components and an advanced bolt carrier group and recoil system. Barrett’s husky MRAD rifle is a bolt-action model that scales 14.8 pounds. It has an adjustable length of pull, thumb-operated safety and ambidextrous magazine release, and a modular design that allows the user to change out the barrel system with simple tools. In .223 Remington or 6.8 SPC, the REC 7 rifle is designed for military or law enforcement work because of its short barrel. There is a commercial version with a 16-inch barrel. Four new rimfire models including one with a Mannlicher-style stock, and a tactical style centerfire rifle have been announced for 2012 by CZ-USA. In the rimfire category, there’s the handsome CZ 455 FS, a full-length stocked model with a slightly raised comb, hooded front sight, checkering on the grip and forearm, and five-round magazine. Two new rifles from Kel-Tec are debuting this week at the SHOT Show, and one is chambered for the new .300 Blackout cartridge. The SU-16CA-BLK has a 16-inch barrel and is 35.9 inches OAL. It is a tough little sport-utility rifle that handles the .300 Blackout. Also this year, Kel-Tec is adding a new barrel length to the RFB-24 Bullpup, which may take it a little beyond the traditional “bullpup” definition. Kel-Tec is adding a 24-inch barrel, giving the new model a 32.5-inch OAL. This new variation hits the scale at 9.3 pounds and is chambered for the 7.62mm NATO/.308 Winchester cartridge. Four new rifles are being introduced by Sig Sauer during this week’s SHOT Show, three chambered for the 5.56mm NATO/.223 Remington and a fourth for the 7.62x51 NATO/.308 Winchester. The SIG 551A1 features an original Swiss folding stock, has classic Swiss styling and ambidextrous controls. With a 16-inch chrome-lined barrel cut with a 1:7 rifling, the 551A1 has a rotary diopter rear sight and hooded front sight, two-position gas pistol operating system and it uses factory Swiss 20- and 30-round magazines. The Model 556x11 has a four-position gas piston system, the same chrome-lined 16-inch barrel, swappable charging handle, low-profile M1913 quad rail and a folding stock. It features an ambidextrous selector and magazine release, SIG flip-up front and rear sights and it accepts standard AR-type magazines. Third in the lineup also chambered for the 5.56/.223 Rem. is the M400, SIG’s first direct gas impingement system rifle. Also fitted with a chrome-lined 16-inch barrel, this one has integral QD sling swivel mounts, an upper/lower tension adjustment device, and removable carry handle. Marking the 75th anniversary of what once was called “The Rifleman’s Rifle,” Winchester is offering a 75th anniversary grade version of the legendary Model 70, and that’s not all for 2012. In addition, Winchester has a Model 94 Trails End takedown lever-action rifle, a Model 1892 Loop Lever carbine and a Model 70 Alaskan in three calibers. But the center of attraction during this week’s SHOT Show is bound to be that anniversary Model 70. This Super Grade model features a Grade IV/V fancy walnut stock with shadowline cheekpiece, solid-steel fitted grip cap, and special engraving on the floorplate and receiver. It boasts the pre-’64 style controlled round feed with claw extractor, recessed target crown and 24-inch cold hammer-forged free-floating barrel. Winchester also installs the MOA trigger system and adds a Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad. It is chambered in .30-06. The Model 70 Alaskan is chambered in .30-06, .300 Winchester Magnum and .338 Winchester Magnum. Featuring a pre-’64 style controlled round feed with claw extractor, it has a 25-inch barrel, folding adjustable rear sight and hooded gold bead front sight, and recessed target crown. It also features the MOA trigger system and Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad on a Monte Carlo walnut stock. Modern cowboys will like that Model 94 takedown rifle. Chambered in .30-30 Winchester or .450 Marlin, it has a 20-inch barrel, straight-grip walnut stock and forearm, semi-buckhorn rear sight, Marble Arms front sight and on the .450-caliber model, a Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad. The new UMAR (for Ultimate Magnum AR) from Olympic Arms is likely to raise a few eyebrows during this week’s SHOT Show. It is a long-range modern sporter that is loaded with features. The standard AR lower has a modified magazine well so it accepts larger magazines that accommodate the .300 Olympic Super Short Magnum with longer cartridges tipped with 168-grain bullets. Standard AR magazines also fit in the rifle when loaded with standard length .300 OSSM cartridges with 150-grain projectiles. The UMAR can be chambered for any WSM or OSSM caliber, and it is also offered in other calibers, including the .22-250 Rem. Olympic designed this rifle with a 24-inch fluted barrel, a rifle-length predator handguard, Harris bipod, target/set trigger and proprietary machined aluminum magazine. Several new rifle models are being unveiled by Savage this week, with something for everyone, including the very young beginner. For somebody bigger, the Trophy Hunter XP package features a Weather Warrior or Hunter rifle topped by a Nikon BDC (for Bullet Drop Compensator) reticle scope. Rifles are available either with a blue steel barrel and action and a synthetic stock, a stainless barrel and action with the same synthetic stock, and blue steel with a walnut stock. Tailored for hunting big wild hogs, the Hog Hunter bolt-action has a 20-inch threaded muzzle, blind magazine and metallic sights. It is chambered for .223 Rem., .308 Win. and .338 Win. Magnum. It is a match-up with Remington’s new Razorback ammunition that features a bullet designed specifically for punching through a hog’s tough hide. The new Lady Hunter bolt action features a redesigned stock that truly is sized for smaller framed shooters. The butt is shorter, and the grip has been reshaped to be closer to the trigger, and it is slimmer, as is the forend. The barrel has a lighter taper to reduce frontend weight, and the rifle is fitted with a good recoil pad. Savage offers the Lady Hunter in several popular calibers, including .223 Rem., .22-250 Rem., .243 Win., 6.5 Creedmore, and .270 Win. The Alaskan Brush Hunter is exactly as described, a rifle developed primarily for the kind of challenges one faces in the back country where one might need a rifle with lots of knockdown authority. It wears a synthetic stock, stainless-steel 18-inch barrel and action, and it is chambered in .338 Win. Magnum and .375 Ruger. Several rifles will be available this year with threaded muzzles.

A new version of the popular Smith & Wesson M&P15 chambered in .300 Whisper has been announced, and it’s a hunter with a full camo finish. The M&P15 is a semi-auto sport utility rifle with a 16-inch barrel cut from 4140 chrome-moly steel. The rifle has a forged 7075-T6 aluminum upper and lower, and the barrel is cut with 1:7.5-inch 5R rifling. There’s an integral rail on top of the receiver for scope mounts or other optical sights. One advantage of the M&P15 is that the rifle will also chamber the new .300 AAC Blackout cartridge. While most of the rifle is finished with Realtree APG camo, the barrel is coated with black Melonite. There is an A2-style flash suppressor and the six-position stock extends the rifle’s OAL from 32 to 35 inches.
The magazine holds 10 rounds. Smith & Wesson designed this rifle to operate with or without a suppressor, so the barrel is threaded. Both the bolt carrier and gas key are chrome lined, and the rifle has a single-stage trigger. The M&P15 will also be available with a black tactical upper and a 10-inch free-float quad rail, and Yankee Hill flash hider. The .300 Whisper is based on the .221 Fireball case, necked up to .30-caliber. With a 125-grain bullet, this cartridge can deliver 2,100 fps at the muzzle, and with a 220-grain projectile, the muzzle velocity is still 1,040 fps. In addition, S&W will offer the upper in .300 Whisper for mounting on existing lowers. The receiver is finished in black and the barrel has a Yankee Hill Phantom flash suppressor.

market, the new Stoeger Double Defense overunder shotgun is available in 12- or 20gauge versions, and it can be examined during this week’s SHOT Show. The Double Defense is chambered for 3-inch shells and the 20-inch barrels are both cut with fixed, improved cylinder chokes. Fans of the over-and-under Browning Citori design will want to check out the new Citori 725 model, and save some time to get the lowdown on the 2012 Browning A-5 semiautomatic with that unmistakable humpback. The Citori 725 stackbarrel features a low-profile receiver and all-new Fire-Lite mechanical trigger. The trigger pull on sporting models is about 3½ pounds and about 4½ pounds in field models. The shotgun also boasts Browning’s new Inflex II recoil pad that absorbs plenty of recoil thanks to its softer material. Announced during summer of 2011, Mossberg’s Model 500 Thunder Ranch shotgun is designed specifically for defense and tactical situations. Built around the proven Model 500 pump action, the new shotgun is chambered for 3-inch magnums, but will handle standard 2¾-inch shells. This shotgun was designed with input from Clint Smith, president and director of the Thunder Ranch training facility in Lakeview, Ore. A couple of new 9mm pistols have been announced by Century International for 2012, both made in Turkey. First up is the Stingray-C, a handgun reminiscent of the CZ75, according to Century. Good news for handgunners in 2012 as Sig Sauer has announced that it will offer the P226 9mm variant for the U.S. Navy to the commercial market, along with the new P224 sub-compact in three calibers. In addition, Sig has revealed a P250 Sub-compact and the 1911Fastback, the P938, and the 1911 Ultra. The Navy version of the P226 is dubbed the MK25, with three 15-round magazines, polymer grips, an M1913 Picatinny rail, and an anchor engraved on the slide. One of Sig Sauer’s major launches this year is the P224, a sub-compact chambered for the 9mm, .40 S&W and .357 SIG, in DAK or DA/SA actions. Chiappa’s full-size .22-caliber M9-22 pistol is the spitting image of the military’s duty sidearm, and that makes it a good training tool as well as a great recreational handgun. Three models are available, the standard model with plastic grip panels, the standard version with textured wood grips, and the tactical with plastic grips and a Novak-style low mount rear sight and fiber-optic front sight. The M9-22 has a 5-inch barrel cut with six lands and grooves on a 1:16-inch rifling twist. It wears fixed sights (the rear is drift adjustable) and a 10-round magazine. The controls work just like those on the Beretta service pistol, and this double-action handgun is capable of pretty good accuracy. Chiappa offers the pistol with a plastic magazine, but otherwise this handgun has the heft of a larger-caliber model. The M9-22 hits the scale at 2.3 pounds. The pistol’s OAL is 8¾ inches, and it wears a black finish overall. It has an external extractor, ambidextrous slide-mounted hammer drop/safety and the plastic grips are checkered. A new rimfire version of the SP 101 revolver, two new laser-equipped LCP and LC9 pistols, and a new single-action rimfire have been announced by Ruger for debut during this week’s SHOT Show. The newest SP 101 is chambered for .22 Long Rifle cartridges and holds eight rounds. It is fitted with a onepiece rubber grip that has checkered walnut inset panels. The SP 101 is done in stainless steel with a matte finish, and the 4.2-inch barrel is fitted with a square-post fiber-optic front sight and square-notch adjustable rear sight. The ejector rod is protected by a half-shroud under the barrel. Ruger’s other rimfire revolver is a single-action called the Single-Ten, thanks to its ten-round cylinder. Crafted from stainless steel with a matte finish, the Single-Ten has a 5.5-inch barrel with a Williams fiber-optic sight and adjustable rear sight. The revolver is fitted with walnut grip panels. In the semi-auto arena, Ruger is showing off the SR40c, a compact version of the popular SR40 pistol, introduced at mid year. With a stainless slide and glass-filled nylon frame, the SR40 has a 3.5-inch barrel, and the slide is topped with fully adjustable three-dot sight system. There’s an accessory rail mold into the frame ahead of the trigger guard, and two magazines. One magazine is a standard nine-rounder and the other a 15-round magazine with an integral grip extension. In states where there is a magazine limit, the pistol is provided with two nine-round magazines. Ruger will also display its newest incarnations of the LCP and LC9 pistols, fitted with LaserMax CenterFire lasers, mounted on the trigger guard of each handgun. This laser is adjustable for windage and elevation, and the guns come with a hex wrench to make such adjustments. The LCP is chambered for .380 ACP while the LC9 is chambered for the 9mm cartridge. Swarovski binoculars have earned a reputation for rugged quality and the new EL Range models with an integrated rangefinder look to maintain that standard. Steiner’s newest binocular entry is a lightweight, compact model called the Merlin, a tough roof-prism model available in four models and two different power ranges. The selection includes and 8x42mm, 10x32mm, 10x42mm and 10x50mm. All are full-size binoculars with center focus and rubber armor exterior. The large center focus knob is user friendly. This series, an upgrade of the popular Merlin line, features lenses with high-contrast optical coatings, new twist-up eyepieces with contoured eye cups and long eye relief. That rubber armor coating is something new. It is made from Nitrile Butadiene rubber. The 8x42mm model weighs 18.3 ounces, the 10x32mm scales at 21.1 ounces, the 10x42 weighs 26.1 ounces and the 10x50mm model hits the scale at 33.1 ounces. All four feature 6.6-foot close focusing. Nikon has announced a new Monarch 3 binocular and a new EDG field scope series, along with a new custom turret program. Unveiled in the fall of 2011, but making their official debut here, the Monarch 3 binocular has already had an opportunity to stack up to game in the wilds. Available in 10x42mm and 8x42mm models, the Monarch 3 All Terrain Binocular features high-resolution optics in a waterproof and fogproof body. They have long eye relief (24.1mm in 8X and 17.4mm in 10X), they have multi-click turn-and-slide rubber eyecups, flip-down rubber lens covers and Nikon Eco-Glass lenses. These roof-prism binoculars feature highly reflective silver-alloy multilayer prism coatings. Nikon is introducing the EDG Fieldscope line with a lens shift VR (vibration reduction) system that consists of two vibration detection sensors that, according to Nikon, identify horizontal and vertical movement. A pair of Voice Coil Motors utilize the vibration reduction system to eliminate blur caused by vibration. There are seven eyepieces with a bayonet lock design, and models range from 20X to 70X. The scope, which is offered in either an angled or straight body, comes standard with a 20-60X zoom eyepiece. This scope can also be used with a Nikon digital SLR camera for taking long-range photographs. It operates on four AA batteries, either alkaline or lithium. Nikon has also announced its Spot-On Custom Turret Program. Under this program, shooters can order personalized engraved turrets calibrated to match the ballistics of a selected factory or handload. The new Conquest series of riflescopes and HD binoculars making their official debut during this week’s SHOT Show should raise plenty of eyebrows. Starting with the riflescopes, Zeiss hits it out of the park with the 30mm Conquest Duralyt series, featuring three inaugural models. These German-made scopes are offered in 1.2-5x36mm, 2-8x42mm and 3-12x50mm. They are available with either the No. 60 illuminated reticle, or the No. 6 non-illuminated reticle. The illuminated reticle features a very fine red dot at the center of the crosshairs that disappears when the power is turned off. This dot reticle is visible even

All three also feature a 109.4-yard parallax adjustment, and Zeiss multicoating on the lenses. In the binocular arena, Zeiss is introducing the Conquest HD family, with 8x42mm and 10x42mm models. These roof-prism binoculars weigh 24.7 ounces, and they are loaded with features. Both offer
90 percent light transmission and they are designed with Schmidt-Pechan prisms with dielectric mirror coatings. Lenses are multicoated and the binoculars are nitrogen filled. It’s all housed in a lightweight aluminum body that has a protective armor exterior. The center focus wheel is large and user-friendly. The new SRS (Sealed Reflex Sight) from Trijicon is a compact unit scheduled for delivery starting next month. The SRS has a unique optical design, and measures only 3.75 inches in length, 2.4 inches high and 2.5 inches wide. A new compact binocular, a compact monocular and a new Laser Rangefinder are all being debuted this week by Bushnell. Bushnell’s new folding compact binocular is an addition to the Legend Ultra HD series. It’s a 10x25mm model with wide-angle BaK-4 roof prisms and fully multi-coated lenses. It has a magnesium chassis and rubber armored housing and RainGuard HD water-repellant lens coating. It comes with a carrying case, neck strap and microfiber lens cloth. The new monocular is also a compact model and it also joins the Legend Ultra HD family. This new model features ED Prime extra-low-dispersion glass, a PC-3 phase-coated prism and fully multi-coated optics. Lenses are coated with RainGuard HD and it features a Picatinny rail and carry clip, and twist-up eyecup. Bushnell takes another step in rangefinder technology with the introduction of the new G-Force 1300 ARC laser rangefinder. This model is accurate to within one yard plus or minus beyond 125 yards, and it can measure ranges out to 1,300 yards against reflective surfaces, and 900 yards against tree-size objects. This unit actually features two patented Bushnell technologies. It boasts Variable Sight-In distance (VSI) and Angle Range Compensation (ARC). VSI allows rifle shooters to set holdover/bullet drop information in MOA or inches, and they can select between 100-, 150-, 200- and 300-yard distances. ARC lets the rangefinder account for both uphill and downhill terrain angles to provide accurate distance to the target and precise shot angle information. Three new entries for 2012 have been announced by Lone Wolf Knives, and they cover several applications. The new Mountainside Combo includes a drop-point model and caper, both made in the USA with Bohler N680 stainless steel. The Mountainside Drop Point has an advanced handle that is tough and functional, and the Mountainside Caper 2 is designed to allow precision cuts. Both knives come in a single leather sheath. Benchmade debuts several new models
One of many top knives from Colonial for 2012 is the 550 Ranger model with a locking blade and tough synthetic handle that is ribbed for a real solid hold even with wet hands. The 550 Ranger is a real lightweight, at a mere 1.5 ounces. With an OAL of 7 inches, the Ranger has a 2¾-inch blade crafted from 440C stainless steel that is hardened to 58-60 Rockwell. This is an auto knife, with a blade that opens and locks with the push of a button on the handle. For additional locking safety, there is a sliding lock that moves forward into position and also locks the blade. The molded handle is a molded isoplast material that is available in black, yellow, blue or red. The blade is either matte natural stainless or finished with a nonreflective black oxide. The handle also has a lanyard hole sized for use with parachute cord, and there is also a pocket clip. Colonial offers a near twin in the Tuff Cop model, with a partly serrated blade and overall length of 71⁄8 inches. The 4.25-inch handle is also designed for use with 550 parachute cord. Since 1926, Colonial brand knives have increased in value considerably. Knives purchased for a few dollars in the 1950s are now worth hundreds of dollars.

Several new Benchmade models are making their debut appearances during this week’s SHOT Show, including models wearing the Harley Davidson and HK brands. In the Adams Family series, there’s a new Model 275 Folder and a 375 fixed blade model. The folder features the Axis locking mechanism and a 3.82inch blade made from D2 tool steel with ambidextrous thumb studs. The desert tan handle is a machined from G10 and it has a lanyard hole and stainless steel liners. The fixed-blade model also features D2 steel with a skeletonized handle. The 4.2-inch drop-point blade features serrations along the spine, and it comes with an injection-molded sheath with locking strap and tension screw. The Model 176 SOCP Dagger has a 7.25-inch OAL with a 3.22-inch blade made from 440C stainless steel. This skeletonized model has a finger loop for easy deployment and use, and a 4.03-inch skeletonized handle. There is a trainer that is 6.81-inch OAL with a 2.78-inch blade and 4.03-inch handle. Benchmade’s new 1100-15 and 1100-16 Ti Pen models are made from machined titanium with an anodized blue body finish and ergonomic knurling pattern. There are blue and black ink options and the pen comes with a cap and pocket clip. The Model 62 Bali-Song has a 4.25-inch D2 toll steel-crowned Weehawk blade and stainless-steel handle. It has a T-latch lock to secure the blade in either open or closed positions. This knife has an OAL of 9.2 inches and it weighs 6.4 ounces. It comes with a nylon sheath. Wearing the Harley Davidson label is the Nonconformist, featuring a push-button mechanism with integrated safety. There are two models, the 13800 with a drop-point blade and the 13801 with a Tanto-style blade. Making their debut under the Kershaw brand are two new fixed-blade hunting knives, the Diskin Hunter and Mini-Skinner, both manufactured at the company’s Tualatin, Ore., facility. Overall, this knife measures 9½ inches and it has textured G-10 scales that are thicker than normal. For skinning and caping jobs, the Mini Skinner Model 1081 is a tough little entry with a 2-inch blade. It works very well on smaller game, too. It also features a Sandvik

This week will see the introduction of the Minimalist and SPEW fixed blade knife models from Columbia River Knife & Tool, and a sample provided to Northwest Sportsman was exactly as described, right down to the razor-sharp edge. There are three knives in the Minimalist series, and a single SPEW entry. Minimalist models come with glass-filled nylon sheaths while the SPEW has a G10 neck sheath. Minimalist knives include: • The Wharncliffe, with a 2-inch stainless steel blade with a layered resin-impregnated fiber handle that has three finger choils. • The Tanto, also with three finger choils and a 2.125-inch stainless blade. • The Bowie, with a 2.125-inch blade and overall length of just over 5 inches. There are new loads from Black Hills in 5.56mm/.223 Remington, .204 Ruger and .300 Whisper, and they’re going to be available even while the company is filling its recently announced five-year Navy contract for precision 5.56mm ammunition. This year, Black Hills is adding a 5.56mm load with a 69-grain Sierra MatchKing bullet, dubbed the “OTM’ by the military. This bullet has a record for accuracy, and it is designed for use in a 1:9-inch twist barrel, which is what one finds in the majority of AR-type rifles. The new 5.56mm load pushes that bullet out of the muzzle at 2,875 fps in a 20-inch barrel to deliver subMOA accuracy. For varmint hunters, the new Black Hills load in .204 Ruger is topped by a 32-grain Hornady V-Max bullet. Capable of velocities topping 4,000 fps, the new load is designed to destroy varmints with sub-MOA accuracy. Then comes the .300 Whisper load, which started out as a wildcat developed by J.D. Jones. This new load is topped by a 125-grain match bullet and it virtually duplicates the ballistics of the 7.62x39mm with light bullets. Black Hills notes that this ammunition is compatible with rifles chambered for the .300 AAC Blackout cartridge. RELOADING In 20 gauge, the 2¾-inch shell pushes a 275grain slug at 1,700 fps while the 3-inch magnum sends the same slug out at 1,900 fps. Joining the V-Shok line with the Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet is a new .204 Ruger load with a 40-grain pill that clocks out the muzzle at 3,650 fps, and a .22-250 Rem. that sends a 55-grain Nosler out at 3,670 fps. For big game, Federal is adding a .30-06 load with a 200-grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claw bullet and a .45-70 Govt. load with a 300-grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claw to the Vital Shok family for big and dangerous North American game. An all-new line of Vital Shok Trophy Copper ammunition is being introduced, in several calibers from .243 Win. to .338 Federal. New for 2012 from Hodgdon is a reloading propellant formulated for reducing copper fouling for high-volume rifle shooters. Hodgdon is also out with the 2012 edition of its Annual Manual, with more than 5,000 loads covering hundreds of popular calibers. CFE 223, for “Copper Fouling Eraser,” is a spherical powder that meters very well, and there is reloading data available for 27 different cartridges and 147 different loads. According to Hodgdon, this propellant delivers maximum velocities in the .204 Ruger, .223 Remington, .22-250 Remington and .308 Winchester. Data is available on-line at the Hodgdon website, and loads are available for a diverse selection of cartridges ranging from the .17 Remington to the .375 H&H. Most popular hunting cartridges may be reloaded with this powder. Available in 1- and 8-pound cans, CFE 223’s formula includes an ingredient developed for use in military propellants, Hodgdon revealed. Moving into 2012, Hornady is raising the curtain on new reloading gear and some new bullets for riflemen. In the equipment department, Hornady has announced the new Lock-N-Load ammo plant, which is designed to convert a progressive press into a serious ammunition factory. This unit includes a Lock-N-Load press, AP bullet feeder and AP case feeder, an AP die bushing 10-pack, and more. This setup can load pistol or rifle cartridges. There is also a new Lock-N-Load Classic Kit deluxe with a single stage press, powder measure, digital scale, Hornady reloading manual, priming tool, kinetic bullet puller, powder trickler, chamfering and deburring tool and more. Another Lock-N-Load entry is the Precision Reloaders Accessory Kit. Precision reloaders will be asking about new Redding forming dies and the national match die set for the .300 Blackout that are being unveiled during this week’s SHOT Show. The forming dies were developed because of the rapidly increasing popularity of this .30-caliber cartridge and demand for brass, which is in very tight supply. The Redding Form #1 die and a Form-and-Trim die are designed for use with .222 Remington and .223 Remington brass to create .300 Blackout cases from either of these two cases. There is plenty of good news from Lyman this year for metallic cartridge reloaders, with introductions that include a new ultrasonic cleaner, data books for individual cartridges and three-die sets. The Turbo Sonic 6000 has a 6.3-quart tank that holds up to 1,300 9mm cases, making it large enough to also hold four handgun frames. There’s a brand new safe series wearing the Browning label and the company is also introducing new apparel items during this week’s SHOT Show. Sporter Series safes are rated to withstand 1,200degree heat for 45 minutes, they have thick 1-inch formed doors with two-sided locking bolts and the DPX storage system on the top half of the door’s interior. Built strong enough to stop a bullet from a .50-caliber BMG rifle, the Bullet Bunker is a phenomenal bullet trap and you can see why during this week’s SHOT Show. The Bullet Bunker’s secret is something called “in-elastic collision,” which translates to a projectile going through the self-sealing rubber face of the target and dramatically slowing down when it enters layers of laminated ballistic fabric combined within the rubber. This fabric is a blend of polyester and nylon that is similar to materials used in soft body armor. Behind that material is another ballistic medium consisting of interlocked rectangles of ballistic rubber that is specially engineered to stop bullets rapidly. All of this is housed in a heavy steel box. There are distinct advantages beyond simply catching bullets. The Bullet Bunker improves air quality because bullets do not splatter but instead slow down without fragmentation. New shotgun barrels for Benelli and Remington 870 shotguns have been announced by Carlson Choke Tubes, along with new tubs for several shotguns and magazine extensions. The new Benelli barrels are for the Nova, and they come in 18½, 24-, 26-, 28- and 30-inch lengths, while all but one of those lengths is available for the Remington 870 models. Several new tactical shooting accessories have been announced by Command Arms, including a couple of pistol-carbine conversion units. There’s a new Picatinny quad rail to fit on modern sporting rifles and carbines. They are made from aviation-grade aluminum and they feature QD sling swivel mounting points and it is finished with black oxide. The two conversion units include a civilian/commercial Roni model, the Roni ICG1, that allows the user to insert a pistol into the unit with a threaded 16-inch barrel, and muzzle shroud. It has the appearance of a Bullpup rifle, with a 10-inch upper flattop Picatinny rail, two 5-inch rails along either side, ambidextrous space magazine holder on the buttstock and a unique trigger block. A new single-gun case called the Micro is being introduced by 9G during this week’s SHOT Show, and it is
perfect for mounting in a desk drawer, under a vehicle seat, in a truck console or in other tight spots. This “third generation” unit uses the same biometrics, but it is faster and it allows for longer battery life thanks to the new design. The electronics not only let this safe open faster, they also deliver more accurate reading of the print. Measuring only 2x12.5x8.5 inches, this L-shaped unit will accommodate a larger handgun, and because it is made from 18-gauge steel, it is going to protect the firearm inside. Its size makes it a more portable unit, too. On the bottom of this safe are strips of nylon hook fasteners, so it can literally be mounted in many different places. It is approved by the California Department of Justice, and it is less expensive, too. There are also deluxe finishes for the full size model including burl wood, marble, camo and a skull finish. A brighter and better LED flashlight is on the way from Coast for 2012, and it has features that sportsmen will appreciate. The new HP7 LED was unveiled late in 2011. It features the latest LED technology, delivering a beam distance of more than 600 feet. It projects 207 lumens for a bright light, and is powered by four AAA batteries. Built from rugged aluminum that is textured around the exterior for a solid hold even in wet weather, the HP7 has a “Pure Beam” focusing system, which is a patentpending feature that produces a consistently bright light across the entire beam. The beam is adjustable, from a flood to a spotlight. It measures 5.5 inches in length. It also offers fingertip speed focus control that allows one-hand focusing of the flashlight, and it also has a Beam Lock system that allows the user to twist the front bezel and lock the light into a precise beam size. The HP7’s Cyclone heat sink system features an aluminum pedestal that sits below the LEDs to decrease heat buildup. This improves the LED lifespan and helps produce maximum light output. It can run up to 3.5 hours. This new flashlight weighs 7.2 ounces and has a diameter of 1.24-inches. The Bezel is 1.49 inches across. It comes with a heavy-duty nylon sheath. There is a slot at the butt for a lanyard.
