SHOT•SHOW 2012

NSSF’S STEVE SANETTI SAYS INDUSTRY HEALTHY DESPITE ECONOMY he overall economy has been down, but the firearms industry has remained healthy, and that translates to more business and additional benefit to wildlife. Just ask Steve Sanetti, president of the National Shooting Sports Foundation. He spoke to Northwest Sportsman for this special SHOT Show preview issue, and it was an upbeat conversation.

T

where it is more affordable, and more people are hunting. In 24 states, hunting license sales are up. “That trend reversed a 20-year decline in license sales,” he said. Expect this good news to be part of Sanetti’s remarks during the annual State of the Industry address, and during a Tuesday morning press conference. It’s going to be a busy SHOT Show,

“Generally,” he noted, “when times are tough there is a time when gun sales stay strong and then they bottom out, but that’s not what’s happening at all this time around. We’ve had 18 months of consecutive year-over-year growth.” Sanetti said there are a variety of reasons for this steady growth, not the least of which is the economy. It keeps people closer to home, they are likely to spend more money to hunt and shoot

with a somewhat different appearance. This year, the show covers some 625,000 square feet of floor space, and there are slightly wider aisles. A few companies were actually asked to reduce the size of their booths to make room for more exhibitors. Thus, the SHOT Show remains the largest show in the industry, with tens of thousands of people gathering in Las Vegas for the four-day event.

10 Northwest Sportsman & California Sportsman SHOT SHOW 2012

This year, visitors will see more signage and electric signs pointing the way to different show sections. There’s a new escalator added to the Sands Convention Center to make moving between the two show levels that much easier. And perhaps most important of all, exhibitors will be essentially in the same location this year as they were last year. The entrance hallway has also been cleared out and the exhibitors have been moved inside the exhibit hall. Another factor in the continued health of the industry, Sanetti suggested, probably is influenced with a growing interest in gun ownership, accompanied by a decline in support for gun control. “Support for gun control has never been lower,” he said, “and support for shooting and hunting has never been higher.” More women are getting involved in shooting and hunting as well. It has become socially acceptable for women to own and use firearms. Of course, since the Supreme Court has twice ruled that the right to keep and bear arms is an individual civil right, concealed carry has continued to gain traction. With the addition of Wisconsin in 2011, only one state, Illinois, remains where there is no kind of legal carry option. Sales of concealable defensive handguns continue to rise. Some estimates place the number of legally licensed citizens at more than 6 million, and that number will likely keep climbing. In Sanetti’s words, “The Supreme Court has ruled that the Second Amendment means what it says.” Another component of industry’s continued success is youth involvement. “There are more sports activities for young people,” Sanetti revealed.“Scouting is emphasizing shooting again, and the 4H is somewhat more involved.” continued on page 20

SHOT•SHOW 2012 RAAHAUGE ANNOUNCES DATES FOR ANNUAL SHOOTING FAIR, YOUTH SAFARI he industry this week is getting a first look at new guns and gear from all over the map, but come June, thousands of people — ultimately consumers — can get a hands-on experience with many of these firearms at the annual Raahauge’s Shooting Sports Fair in Corona, Calif. According to Mike Raahauge, for more than 20 years this shooting fair has attracted huge crowds that spend three days at his property, where children are admitted free, and they go through tens of thousands of rounds of ammunition, BBs and paintballs. Last year, he said 20,000 people attended the Shooting Sports Fair, and they got to meet representatives from literally all of the major firearms companies. “There is nothing else like this in the United States,” Raahauge told Northwest Sportsman. “We get very good industry support, and where else can you go and shoot everybody’s gun and not have to

T

buy it?” As usual, this year’s event — scheduled June 1-3 — will be a joint operation with the staff at Turner’s Outdoors, whose involvement isn’t just smart business, it is an investment for the future, and not just for the store. Visitors to the Shooting Sports Fair become customers, if they are not already, and if they are accompanied by their children, that may translate to a couple of generations of customers. There are manufacturers’ representatives, firearms instructors and other experts at the event, and there are also seminars over the course of the weekend, discussing big game and waterfowl hunting, upland wing shooting and various other shooting activities. But it doesn’t stop there. The annual Raahauge’s Youth Safari Day is scheduled July 21 this year. Last year, the event drew 4,000 youngsters, and their parents, for a day of activities that included a unique

opportunity to shoot at remote-controlled model airplanes with paintball guns. Raahauge estimated that 80,000 paintballs were used in that single day. The Youth Safari is a week prior to the California State Sporting Clays shoot, Raahauge noted. He expects approximately 450 shooters for that event, and noted that this year there will be an additional $5,000 in prize money. There will be firearms awarded in every class, and right now Raahauge is looking for additional sponsors for the various shooting stations. Raahauge’s Shooting Enterprises 14995 River Road Dept. SHOT•SHOW 2012 THE EVOLVING FRED HALL SHOWS By Bart Hall n 1945, the year of my birth, Fred Hall, my father, had the idea to produce a “sportsman’s show.” He began at Gilmore stadium in Los Angeles and a few years later moved to the Pan Pacific Auditorium. Over the years the show has evolved and moved to various locations in the Los Angeles Metroplex area. 36 years ago he added another show in San Diego, originally downtown at Golden Hall, but for the last 34 years it has been at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Originally the shows featured all forms of “outdoor recreation.” Over the years, in an effort to separate himself from the plethora of “sportsman’s shows” that copied his ideas, Fred Hall changed the name of the shows to the Western Fishing Tackle & Boat Shows. These shows have become the preeminent consumer fishing shows in the world. They have been sold out for over 20 years. The name of the shows became basically meaningless because, over time, they were simply called the Fred Hall

I

16 Northwest Sportsman & California Sportsman SHOT SHOW 2012

Shows by local attendees and the local media. In 2009 the boat business in the United States went into a serious decline. The vast majority of boat dealers in California went out of business. Those that remained solvent were forced to take smaller exhibit spaces in the shows. This provided the Fred Hall Shows with an opportunity to expand the parameters of the shows. There was suddenly enough space to begin to seriously consider the shooting sports and all forms of outdoor recreation as poten-

tial exhibitors. Over 60 percent of all Fred Hall Show attendees participate in the shooting sports. Because of the huge crowds that attend these events, that means that the Fred Hall Shows attract more shooters than any other shows in the west. So, officially in 2010, we changed the name of the shows to “The Fred Hall Shows” and in 2011 we changed it again to, “The Fred Hall Shows…the Ultimate Outdoor Experience”. The Fred Hall Shows now, once again, incorporate all forms of outdoor recreation including: fishing; hunting; shooting sports; boating; travel; camping; free diving and SCUBA diving. These are large shows, with large avid crowds. You can’t stand in front of more potential customers in the outdoor recreation business at any other events. The show dates for 2012 are: “The Fred Hall Show…The Ultimate Outdoor Experience,” at the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center, March 7-11, 2012 and the “Fred Hall Show…The Ultimate Outdoor Experience” at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, March 22-25, 2012. SHOT•SHOW 2012 DUCKS UNLIMITED CELEBRATES 75 YEARS!

S

eventy-five years ago this month, a small group of avid waterfowlers took bold action to help restore waterfowl populations devastated by drought and wetland drainage. Led by printing magnate Joseph Palmer Knapp and other members of the More Game Birds in American Foundation, these conservation pioneers founded a new organization with the singular mission of protecting and restoring wetlands in Canada, where the majority of the continent's waterfowl are raised. A year after outlining their plan, the dream of Knapp and his colleagues became a reality. Ducks Unlimited, Inc.—the U.S.-based entity that would serve to gather and disperse funds—was incorporated on January 29, 1937, in Washington, D.C. Ducks Unlimited Canada, the entity that would actually carry out the founders' ambitious plan, was incorporated shortly thereafter in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on March 10. “First Nation-Wide Organization of Wild Fowlers Completed” was the headline of the inaugural issue of the Ducks Unlimited quarterly in April 1938. To raise funds for its conservation work, DU immediately began

18 Northwest Sportsman & California Sportsman SHOT SHOW 2012

working to organize a volunteer committee in each state, under the guidance of a competent state chairman, assisted by one or more vice chairmen and other officers. Each state committee had a financial target they had to accept and try to meet. Unlike today's DU, early “membership” was in the form of five-year “subscriptions”—the same method used by More Game Birds. The length of these pledges would help facilitate long-range planning—knowing how much money was coming down the road would allow DU Canada to plan for projects several years in advance. Now, 75 years later, DU’s founders would be proud of what their organization has accomplished for waterfowl. Supported by legions of dedicated volunteers, DU has raised more than $3.3 billion to conserve more than 12.4 million acres of wetlands and other waterfowl habitat across North America. This noble conservation tradition will continue this year as Ducks Unlimited celebrates its 75th Anniversary. Highlights will include DU's 75th national convention, which will serve as a homecoming for past

and present DU volunteers and staff the weekend of May 30−June 2, 2012, in Nashville. For example, all current and former state chairmen will be invited to attend a special night of fellowship at the Gaylord Resort and Convention Center in the Music City. Throughout this anniversary year, special event merchandise, including three commemorative dinner guns and an all-star art package, will be available at DU events nationwide. Diamond Anniversary project dedications will be held in each state to celebrate DU’s conservation work. A special historical episode of DUTV will air on the Outdoor Channel. And of course, stay tuned to Ducks Unlimited magazine and ducks.org/75 for special anniversary coverage. And The Ducks Unlimited Story—a hardcover book by Michael Furtman— tells the story of Ducks Unlimited’s first 75 years, from its founding in 1937 to the generations of sportsmen who made DU the greatest conservation organization in history. It also includes never-beforeseen pictures and documents recently discovered in DU’s archives.

SHOT•SHOW 2012 WYOMING: EQUALITY STATE BECKONS BUSINESS, SPORTSMEN here is just something about Wyoming, whether you’re talking about the prairie, the Rocky Mountains, Yellowstone, the state’s cattle and cowboy heritage, big game hunting, tremendous sportfishing opportunity, hiking, camping and/or just sight-seeing. Wyoming has it all and one other thing: A terrific business climate that is gun-friendly and equally friendly to a business bottom line. Doing business in Wyoming boils down to friendly regulations, and dollars and sense (and we didn’t misspell that). This is the Real West, home of the

T

Red Desert, the Bighorn Mountains, Jackson Hole, Cody, the Grand Tetons, the Wind River Range, Cheyenne, Laramie, the Devil’s Tower, antelope, mule deer, elk and bison. The state has a lot of history, and opportunity for businesses to make a little history of their own. There is good transportation, modern highways, and people ready to put out the welcome mat. During this week’s SHOT Show, representatives from six outdoor businesses will share an exhibit with staffers from the Wyoming Game & Fish Department. Those businesses are Lucid LLC,

High Mountain Seasonings, Stukey’s Shooting Benches, the Shady Lady Shooting Company, Best of the West Productions and the Twisted Barrel. They will host a media reception on Thursday at the Venetian Hotel in Room 4302. Throughout the week, they will answer questions and provide information to people attending the SHOT Show and particularly businessmen and women who may be interested in moving to this grand state. Find out about hunting and fishing opportunities as well. It’s all there waiting. SS

enjoying good times in a sluggish economy and this week’s SHOT Show will underscore that with new gun and gear introductions that should bring new and repeat customers through retail doors. SS

SHOT•SHOW 2012 IDAHO: IT’S NOT CALLED ‘THE GEM STATE’ FOR NOTHING leven species of big game, 15 different waterfowl species, ten upland bird species and more than 30 fish species — plus a business climate that actually likes business — and you get the feel for Idaho. From high prairie and desert to the timbered rocky mountains, Idaho has it all. Here’s the state with the famous Hells Canyon of the Snake River, the “Big Three” lakes — Priest, Pend Oreille and Coeur d’Alene — up in the northern Panhandle country, and plenty of wilderness in between. Yet there is also commerce and industry, and a state that is home to legendary companies like Herrett Stocks and Buck

Knives, Speer and CCI. During this week’s SHOT Show, the Idaho Department of Fish & Game, and the Idaho Department of Commerce are partnering in an exhibit just to tell the industry all about the Gem State. It’s not difficult to understand why so many outdoorsmen and women visit Idaho, and many go there to stay. One can still purchase general deer and elk tags, and there are opportunities to hunt and fish. At the right time of year, one can go after salmon and steelhead, hunt chukar or other upland birds or big game, or waterfowl if one times it right. That takes a bit of studying and planning, of course!

Indeed, there is some kind of hunting and fishing opportunity year-round in the Gem State, from varmints to big game. IDFG has seven regional offices and the main headquarters is in Boise. Staff personnel at these offices are helpful and they enjoy talking to sportsmen and -woman. Idaho has good populations of whitetail and mule deer, elk, black bear and other big game. This year Colt is introducing a new rifle model that is a collaboration with Magpul featuring some of that company’s top accessories for the AR platform, under the Colt Defense LLC brand. Colt has also announced five new California-compliant rifle models. The new Colt Defense-Magpul model is built on the Law Enforcement carbine platform. Weighing 6.8 pounds, it measures 30.5 inches. The rear Back-Up Sight is spring-loaded to pop up fast from the folded position, while the hand grip has a compact design with a more vertical grip angle. This new rifle is available in black, dark earth, or with contrasting Magpul parts. All models are available with a “bullet button” to make them California compliant. The other new additions are also California compliant.

In addition to the three models listed above, Colt offers its Model LE6920CA carbine with a bullet button so it is state compliant for commercial sale to private citizens. RUGER

Gunsite Scout Rifle

1 Lacey Place, Dept. NWS, Southport, CT 06890/(203) 259-7843/www.ruger-firearms.com

Introduced at mid year but making its official debut during this week’s SHOT Show, the Ruger 77/357 bolt-action rifle is one of two entries worth a gander. The other is the left-hand version of the popular Gunsite Scout Rifle. Ruger’s Model 77/357 is cham-

bered for the .357 Magnum cartridge. It has a five-

model that will fit young and smaller-framed shooters. The new Tac 2 has a chrome-lined 4150 lightweight barrel with a Panther flash suppressor, Magpul ACS stock, MOE grip, trigger guard and a new M111moduler free-float rail system. Then there’s the Tactical Precision Rifle, which is reminiscent of the SDMR model that was discontinued three years ago. It has a bead-blasted 416 stainless steel HBAR barrel with an AAC blackout flash suppressor, the M111modular free-float rail system and B5 Systems stock. It also has a Magpul MOE grip and trigger guard. DPMS also offers the Lite LR-308 rifle. This one has a 24-inch 416 stainless lightweight fluted barrel and a carbon-fiber free-float tube improved for 2012. It also features an A3 receiver and it is chambered for the .308 Win. The Compact Hunter has a B5 SOPMOD retractable stock that will fit youth and women better. It has a 16inch Teflon-coated stainless barrel and carbon-fiber free-float tube. It also has a Hogue pistol grip, flattop with rail and it is available in all current hunter calibers.

round rotary magazine, stainless-steel barrel and receiver, and a black composite stock. Designed for hunting in heavy cover when midsize game is the target, the 77/357 has an 18.5-inch

cold hammer-forged barrel. During testing, it performed very well with Hornady 140-grain FTX ammunition. The Gunsite Scout Rifle version for southpaws is a mirror image of the original right-hand model. Weighing 7.5 pounds, the Gunsite model has a 10round extended magazine, post front sight and adjustable rear, flash suppressor on a 16.5-inch barrel, laminated wood stock with thick recoil pad and a Picatinny-type rail ahead of the action. The Gunsite model is chambered for the .308 Win. Ruger also offers replacement polymer magazines for the Scout rifle. They are offered in three-, five- and 10-round sizes. BARRETT’S BIG GUNS REMAIN IN THE SPOTLIGHT P.O. Box 1077, Dept. NWS, Murfreesboro, TN 37133-1077/(615) 896-2938/www.barrettrifles.com

Barrett continues to dominate the big-bore shooting scene in 2012, and that momentum can be credited in large part to rifles currently in production, the M107A1, the MRAD and the REC7 PDW (for Personal Defense Weapon). The M107A1 is chambered for the .50 BMG cartridge, and it is 4 pounds lighter than the military M107 rifle. It comes from the factory ready for a suppressor, and it has a round four-port muzzle brake that is designed to interface with that suppressor. This big rifle has an aluminum upper receiver, specific titanium components and an advanced bolt carrier group and recoil system. Barrett’s husky MRAD rifle is a bolt-action model that scales 14.8 pounds. It has an adjustable length of pull, thumb-operated safety and ambidextrous magazine release, and a modular design that allows the user to change out the barrel system with simple tools. In .223 Remington or 6.8 SPC, the REC 7 rifle is designed for military or law enforcement work because of its short barrel. There is a commercial version with a 16-inch barrel. The piston is made from 17-4 stainless steel while the pistol bolt is made from 9310 steel. The gas block is chrome-lined and has forward venting. For more information, see us at booth #11371

CZ-USA 1401 Fairfax TFWY, B-119, Dept. NWS, Kansas City, KS 66115 (800) 955-4486/www.cz-usa.com

Four new rimfire models including one with a Mannlicher-style stock, and a tactical style centerfire rifle have been announced for 2012 by CZ-USA. In the rimfire category, there’s the handsome CZ 455 FS, a full-length stocked model with a slightly raised comb, hooded front sight, checkering on the grip and forearm, and five-round magazine. It is available in .22 Long Rifle, .22 Magnum and .17 HMR.

Two new rifles from Kel-Tec are debuting this week at the SHOT Show, and one is chambered for the new .300 Blackout cartridge. The SU-16CA-BLK has a 16-inch barrel and is 35.9 inches OAL. It is a tough little sport-utility rifle that handles the .300 Blackout. Also this year, Kel-Tec is adding a new barrel length to the RFB-24 Bullpup, which may take it a little beyond the traditional “bullpup” definition. Kel-Tec is adding a 24-inch barrel, giving the new model a 32.5-inch OAL. This new variation hits the scale at 9.3 pounds and is chambered for the 7.62mm NATO/.308 Winchester cartridge. SPECIAL ADVERTISING FEATURE

GETTING THE RANGE:

SWAROVSKI’S NEW EL RANGE IS A WINNER ust when everybody thought Swarovski Optik couldn’t improve on its EL binocular, they did it. Enter the new EL Range, a binocular with an integrated rangefinder that does not resemble the bulky package of past competitors, but instead offers a platform that refuses to stay in camp. Here is a remarkable piece of optical equipment that not only delivers a sharp, crisp image, but at the same time lets the hunter or shooter know just how far away a game animal or some object is. This is no ordinary binocularrange finder combination. Available in two versions, an 8x42mm and 10x42mm, the EL Range looks like a typical pair of binoculars, but with the addition of that unique range finder, it’s not “typical” at all. The heart of this new model is a new technology Swarovski calls Swaro-Aim, a powerful and reliable laser range-finding unit that provides an electronic readout in meters or yards. It has a display with five individually adjustable brightness levels and user-friendly LCD screen that is easy to read and is very simple to operate. Dean J. Capuano, communications manager for Swarovski Optik North America, said, “We have been developing this product for a few years now and we are very excited about the end result. The combination of the timetested EL binocular combined with an exceptional rangefinder makes for one tool that will meet the demands for every hunter in the field.” Swaro-Aim features what Swarovski calls an “integrated gradometer.” This

J

technology displays the precise and correct shooting distance, and angle. Indeed, it is the only such angled-shot program anywhere on the planet. If you can see it, and range it, you will be able to hit it with the help of these binoculars. It has a large center focus wheel that is easy to use even when wearing gloves, and the EL Range has a tough rubber armor exterior that will stack up to all kinds of weather conditions. The 8X model is slightly shorter than the 10X model, but both binoculars are the same width and height. They come with a neck strap and the eyepieces are adjustable so a person wearing eyeglasses is able to use the EL Range with no trouble. The EL Range may be very familiar to Swarovski binocular aficionados, and that comes as no surprise, since they were designed on the highly suc-

cessful and popular EL binocular. And the EL binocular is still enjoying broad acceptance among discerning outdoorsmen and -women for whom a binocular is a piece of yearround equipment. The 12x50mm weighes 35.2 ounces and offers a 300foot field of view at that distance. For people in need of something special, the EL Range fills the bill.

With a full lineup of high-quality drop-block single-shot rifles built around either the Model 1864 percussion or 1874 cartridge breechloader design, Shiloh Sharps remains at the top of the heap for devotees of historic long-range big-bore rifles. The folks in Big Timber, Mont., will be displaying their full line during this week’s SHOT Show, including the popular 1874 Sharps Buffalo Rifle Quigley model, the rifle made famous by the film Quigley Down Under. The most popular caliber for these long rifles is the .45-70 Govt., primarily because ammunition is fairly easy to find. In other historic calibers, one must spend plenty of time at the reloading bench. Models in the 1874 series — in addition to the Quigley model — include the Military model with a full-length forend stock and 30-inch round barrel, the No. 2 Creedmore Silhouette model with 30-inch round tapered barrel, Creedmore Target Rifle with a 32-inch octagonal barrel, the Business Rifle with a 28-inch round tapered barrel, Military Carbine with its 22-inch round barrel and Long Range Express with 34-inch barrel. For somebody bigger, the Trophy Hunter XP package features a Weather Warrior or Hunter rifle topped by a Nikon BDC (for Bullet Drop Compensator) reticle scope. Rifles are available either with a blue steel barrel and action and a synthetic stock, a stainless barrel and action with the same synthetic stock, and blue steel with a walnut stock. S&W announces new M&P15 2100 Roosevelt Ave., Dept. NWS, Springfield, MA 01104 (413) 781-8300/www.smithandwesson.com

The M&P15 is a semi-auto sport utility rifle with a 16-inch barrel cut from 4140 chrome-moly steel. The rifle has a forged 7075-T6 aluminum upper and lower, and the barrel is cut with 1:7.5-inch 5R rifling. There’s an integral rail on top of the receiver for scope mounts or other optical sights. One advantage of the M&P15 is that the rifle will also chamber the new .300 AAC Blackout cartridge. While most of the rifle is finished with Realtree APG camo, the barrel is coated with black Melonite. There is an A2-style flash suppressor and the six-position stock extends the rifle’s OAL from 32 to 35 inches.

The magazine holds 10 rounds. Smith & Wesson designed this rifle to operate with or without a suppressor, so the barrel is threaded. Both the bolt carrier and gas key are chrome lined, and the rifle has a single-stage trigger. The M&P15 will also be available with a black tactical upper and a 10-inch free-float quad rail, and Yankee Hill flash hider. The .300 Whisper is based on the .221 Fireball case, necked up to .30-caliber. With a 125-grain bullet, this cartridge can deliver 2,100 fps at the muzzle, and with a 220-grain projectile, the muzzle velocity is still 1,040 fps. In addition, S&W will offer the upper in .300 Whisper for mounting on existing lowers. The receiver is finished in black and the barrel has a Yankee Hill Phantom flash suppressor.

BLACK HILLS REVEALS NEW LOADS P.O. Box 3090, Dept. NWS, Rapid City, SD 57709/(605) 348-5150/www.black-hills.com

There are new loads from Black Hills in 5.56mm/.223 Remington, .204 Ruger and .300 Whisper, and they’re going to be available even while the company is filling its recently announced five-year Navy contract for precision 5.56mm ammunition. This year, Black Hills is adding a 5.56mm load with a 69-grain Sierra MatchKing bullet, dubbed the “OTM’ by the military. This bullet has a record for accuracy, and it is designed for use in a 1:9-inch twist barrel, which is what one finds in the majority of AR-type rifles. The new 5.56mm load pushes that bullet out of the muzzle at 2,875 fps in a 20-inch barrel to deliver subMOA accuracy. For varmint hunters, the new Black Hills load in .204 Ruger is topped by a 32-grain Hornady V-Max bullet. Capable of velocities topping 4,000 fps, the new load is designed to destroy varmints with sub-MOA accuracy. Then comes the .300 Whisper load, which started out as a wildcat developed by J.D. Jones. This new load is topped by a 125-grain match bullet and it virtually duplicates the ballistics of the 7.62x39mm with light bullets. Black Hills notes that this ammunition is compatible with rifles chambered for the .300 AAC Blackout cartridge. The new Navy contract calls for the delivery of 50 million rounds of ammunition topped with 77-grain bullets. For more information, see us at booth #3019

The company uses virgin and secondary lead alloys and pure virgin copper in the production of its bullets. Rainier manufactures bullets from .32 (.312) to .50 caliber. Bullets are completely covered by the copper plating, which makes them perfect for use on indoor ranges, and there is a savings in plated over jacketed bullets. BULLET BUNKER FOR INDOOR, OUTDOOR RANGES P.O. Box 400, Port Clinton, OH 43452/(419) 341-1416/www.thebulletbunker.com

Built strong enough to stop a bullet from a .50-caliber BMG rifle, the Bullet Bunker is a phenomenal bullet trap and you can see why during this week’s SHOT Show. The Bullet Bunker’s secret is something called “in-elastic collision,” which translates to a projectile going through the self-sealing rubber face of the target and dramatically slowing down when it enters layers of laminated ballistic fabric combined within the rubber. This fabric is a blend of polyester and nylon that is similar to materials used in soft body armor. Behind that material is another ballistic medium consisting of interlocked rectangles of ballistic rubber that is specially engineered to stop bullets rapidly. All of this is housed in a heavy steel box. There are distinct advantages beyond simply catching bullets. The Bullet Bunker improves air quality because bullets do not splatter but instead slow down without fragmentation. In addition, bullets stopped by the Bullet Bunker can be recovered easily, rather than penetrate deep into soil or sand, or other berm material. Bullet Bunkers can actually be built to a customer’s specifications, and there are also several standard sizes. The Bullet Bunker has been used both indoors and outdoors, and they can last for a very long time.

On the underside is a 3⁄8-20 threaded slot for mounting on a tripod and it comes with a ¼-20 bushing in case one needs to downsize from the standard threaded size for use with Bog-Pod shooting sticks. Capable of handling full-size binoculars from 7X to 20X, the BBR allows someone to actually carry a tripod with the binoculars in place.

Also from Bog Gear is the Adapt-a-pod, which allows the user to convert any standard monopod, bipod or tripod with standard ¼-20 or 3⁄8-16 mounting bolts for use with Bog-Pod accessories. Made from aluminum it mounts to a base easily with only a screwdriver. Preventing damaging mildew and moisture from forming and accumulating inside gun safes, storerooms, campers and boats is what Desiccare products are designed for. For 2012, the company is introducing a moisture absorber that looks like a shotgun shell. It is transparent on the end so the user can see that it is absorbing moisture, and then it may be placed in a microwave oven and dried out for re-use. This new imitation shotshell is loaded with silica gel that contains cobalt chloride. It is similar to a product that is designed for use in shoes and boots called the Dry Out. This company produces moisture absorbent products under private labels, including products for such companies as Remington and Scent Shield. Camper Dry and Boat Dry are two of the most popular products in the line. They come in boxes containing individually wrapped bags that start working a soon as they are exposed to the air and humidity. Each

ACCESSORIES FANCY AND FUNCTIONAL FROM EAGLE GRIPS 260 Randy Road, Dept. NWS, Carol Stream, IL 60188/(800) 323-6144/www.eaglegrips.com

From its unique series of colorful Art Jewel grips to the more traditional hardwood, stag and American elk, Eagle Grips offers a complete array of replacement grips for single- and double-action revolvers and semiautomatic pistols, and they do it in style. Eagle developed the popular Gunfighter Grips, and the company has been a leader in the use of genuine Sambar Stag and Rosewood. Over the past few years, as genuine stag availability has diminished, Eagle found a reliable supply of American elk antler that is equally handsome. Each antler is carefully selected for weight and color. Lately, the company has developed a tough resin compound and combined it with different colors for production of the Art Jewel grip series. It’s admittedly a niche market item, but Eagle dominates the niche, with exotic pinks, blues, reds and other colors, and each is individually unique. No two grips are identical; each has its own color pattern. The pink grips were developed to promote the cancer awareness campaign. The availability of grip frames for guns include traditional Smith & Wesson square and round butt, Colt, Ruger and unusual handgun models. Clients can also ship their guns to Eagle for custom fitting. Options include replacement grips for Luger pistols, Detonics semi-autos and even Navy Schofield revolvers. Eagle also produces a line of classic grips in the old “Coke Bottle” design for S&W revolvers dubbed the Heritage line. Of particular interest is the line of Eagle grip panels for the Model 1911. The lineup includes selections in the Art Jewell collection, plus imitation ivory, yellow and blue silk resin, and traditional hardwood. For more information, see us at booth #16242

The maker of possibly the most popular hand and foot warmer product on the market has something new: a resealable bag that allows the warmers to be sealed away from the air for re-use. Grabber Warmers, which operate when exposed to the air, come in several sizes for hands, feet, even toes, and there are also large “peeland-stick “body” warmers that have an adhesive surface so they clink to a person’s body and can heat up to 12 hours. They continue operating for several hours, and the heating cycle can be interrupted by sealing the warmer away from air. That’s where the new resealable bag comes in. Once inside the sealed bag, the heating process stops until it is again exposed to the air. This new bag has already been in limited circulation, and it will be in general distribution this year. Grabber Warmers are available in bulk packs and smaller packs, and bulk boxes. For more information, see us at booth #1005

slings made from water buffalo hide. These tough slings will work on all sporting rifles. There is also a new selection of padded leather slings. PEET P.O. Box 618, Dept. NWS, St. Maries, ID 83861 1-800-222-7338/www.peetshoedryer.com

Putting an end to soggy footgear is what the PEET Shoe Dryer concept has been all about since the company was founded in 1968, and today’s lineup of dryers extends well beyond boots and shoes, to helmets and gun safes. For 2012, the Idaho-based company is concentrating on delivering the products it is now producing. PEET dryers not only remove dampness, they eliminate odor-causing bacteria and prevent mold and mildew. These last two considerations are critical inside gun safes and lockers, where damp air can contribute to rust and corrosion of valuable firearms and other gear stored inside. In terms of energy savings, PEET dryers use less energy than a 40-watt light bulb. For example, last year’s debut SafeKeeping dryer draws only 18 watts of power, and it has been tested inside a Liberty safe. There are models that will accommodate everything from shoes to hip boots and waders. This translates to extended service life for valuable footwear. The original product back in 1921 was a neatsfoot oil-based leather shoe dressing, and from there, the company has developed its shoe grease formula, shoe oil, Boot and Saddle Soap and Saddle & Tack Conditioner. These products have become a staple in boot shops and stores where boots are sold, essentially “selling themselves” to people who want to maintain their expensive foot gear for many years. The five products in the Huberd’s line can extend the life of a boot by many years, preventing cracking, keeping the leather supple and water resistant. Huberd’s Shoe Grease is available in 7.5-ounce, pint and quart cans, and a 3-ounce tube. This proprietary formula has been taking care of boots and shoes since 1921. Three different holster models from N82 Tactical and custom shop models designed to accommodate handguns with Crimson Trace Laserguard sights are available from N82 Tactical. There are three standard holster models, with oil-tanned facing that protects the finish of a firearm while providing a durable contact surface for the gun. These holsters are built with suede backing for a soft contact with the body, while providing natural friction that spreads the weight of the gun and a good contact that will not slide around. This also allows for N82 Tactical’s single clip retention design. Neoprene is sewn between the layers of leather for padding and also a layer of waterproofing to keep perspiration away from the gun. Also from N82 Tactical comes the Original and Original “tuckable” holster models, featuring a dense Herringbone elastic that is sewn into the facing leather and provides a secure contact with the firearm. Seven sizes are available in right or left hand that will fit just about any popular defensive handgun.

SEVERAL NEW ENTRIES FROM SECURE FIREARMS PRODUCTS P.O. Box 177, Dept. NWS, Carl Junction, MO 64834/ (800) 257-8744/www.securefirearmproducts.com Look for the Secure Firearms exhibit during this week’s SHOT Show and you’ll find several new shooting accessories for 2012. For openers, the new All-In-One 1911 Firing Pin stop tool and bushing wrench is designed for safely re-

moving and installing the firing in stop on a Model 1911 pistol. It safely depresses the firing pin and pulls the stop from the slide, and then reinstalls the pin and pin stop by reversing the process. Made from high-density nylon or aluminum, this is a tool that home gunsmiths and gun shop pros will find indispensable. Another new arrival is the handgun recoil spring

both available in 8-ounce cans, while the Boot and Saddle Soap and Saddle & Tack Conditioner are both available in 8-ounce bottles. The company welcomes new distributors and wholesalers.

Pachmayr 475 Smith Street, Dept. NWS, Middletown, CT 06457/(860) 632-2020/www.pachmayr.com

Pachmayr is expanding its selection of Tactical Grip Gloves for owners of small semiautomatic pistols for 2012. Three new models are available, for the Smith & Wesson Bodyguard, the Ruger LC9 and the Glock subcompact. Made from the same material used in Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pads, these new Grip Gloves have ventilated side panels, molded palm swells and finger grooves along the front. They stretch over the synthetic

tester. This handy gadget will allow a gunsmith to test and organize loose recoil springs and it is made from high-density nylon. It is available with or without a scale. The SFP Mover target is for serious shooters, and is built to last for years. Built from zinc-plated steel and aluminum with quality hardware, the Mover target features two steel uprights with folding legs, and there is an economy model that lets the user install his own 2x4 uprights attached to the target base. The SFP mover target motor is attached to the upright and a line is employed to pull the trolley with a target along the cable. The unit can be triggered via a hand-held control or a remote target, such as a popper. For shooters who participate in the Steel Challenge competitions, the Economy Plate Stand may be the answer. It may be used for any shooting discipline that does not involve falling targets. This unit has the same features as SFP’s standard plate stands, and it is designed for use with a 2x4 instead of a steel upright. For more information, see us at booth #1008

SKULL HOOKER DESIGNED FOR EUROPEAN WALL MOUNTS P.O. Box 257, Klamath Falls, OR 97601 (541) 884-3177/www.skullhooker.com

Since its introduction at the SHOT Show, the Skull Hooker mount for European skull-type trophy mounts has gained a lot of traction with American hunters. This unit features an adjustable bracket and mount base designed to display a skull mount at an angle that looks more natural than simply being mounted flat to a wall. There are two brackets that fit virtually every game animal species from coyote on up, and for 2012, these brackets have been redesigned. The Little Hooker is for deer-sized game and smaller, including such things as alligator, bobcat, mountain lion, bears and antelope skulls. The Big Hooker is for bigger game animals, such as elk and caribou, all the way up to cape buffalo. Perhaps the biggest feature of the Skull Hooker is that the owner can actually swap different skull mounts, thus allowing for some design variety.

This year’s introductions from Smith Optics cover lots of applications, and during this week’s SHOT Show, three outdoor television personalities will be on hand at specific times. Chad Belding, host of The Fowl Life appears Wednesday 1-3 p.m.; Patrick Flanigan, host of Xtreme Sport Shooter will be at the booth Thursday, 1-3 p.m. and on Friday; Ron Bellan with Reaper Outdoors and host of Survive the Hunt appears 1-3 p.m. They will be surrounded by new products, including the Aegis Arc and Arc Compact eye shields. The Arc will fit hat sizes from 7¼ and up, while the Compact model will fit hat sizes 7¼ and smaller. They allow fast lens changes, thanks to Pivlock Lens Interchange technology, and they feature tapered lens technology to correct distortions. All lenses have anti-fog and scratch resistant coatings, and they offer full protection from ultra-violet rays. Aegis Echo eye shields are designed for use with or without over-the-ear hearing protection and communication systems. They have thin alloy temples and are designed for extended wear. They also feature Pivlock Lens Interchange Technology for quick lens exchanges, and they are compatible with all Aegis lenses and with the Smith Elite Rx System insert.

Available with winter bright white or green, this new unit has a 3-watt LED bulb that produces 250 lumens and it also has a 5mw red laser that may be adjusted for windage and elevation. It operates with a four-way switch that enables a shooter to use the lamp only, a lamp-laser combination, or just the laser. The fourth position turns the unit off. 9G updates Inprint biometric gun safe 222 Oak Street, Dept. NWS Bonner Springs, KS 66012 (913) 422-7400/www.9gproducts.com

A new single-gun case called the Micro is being introduced by 9G during this week’s SHOT Show, and it is

perfect for mounting in a desk drawer, under a vehicle seat, in a truck console or in other tight spots. This “third generation” unit uses the same biometrics, but it is faster and it allows for longer battery life thanks to the new design. The electronics not only let this safe open faster, they also deliver more accurate reading of the print. Measuring only 2x12.5x8.5 inches, this L-shaped unit will accommodate a larger handgun, and because it is made from 18-gauge steel, it is going to protect the firearm inside. Its size makes it a more portable unit, too. On the bottom of this safe are strips of nylon hook fasteners, so it can literally be mounted in many different places. It is approved by the California Department of Justice, and it is less expensive, too. There are also deluxe finishes for the full size model including burl wood, marble, camo and a skull finish. New high-performance LED from Coast 8033 N.E. Holman, Dept. NWS, Portland, OR 97218/(800) 426-5858/www.coastportland.com

A brighter and better LED flashlight is on the way from Coast for 2012, and it has features that sportsmen will appreciate. The new HP7 LED was unveiled late in 2011. It features the latest LED technology, delivering a beam distance of more than 600 feet. It projects 207 lumens for a bright light, and is powered by four AAA batteries. Built from rugged aluminum that is textured around the exterior for a solid hold even in wet weather, the HP7 has a “Pure Beam” focusing system, which is a patentpending feature that produces a consistently bright light across the entire beam. The beam is adjustable, from a flood to a spotlight. It measures 5.5 inches in length. It also offers fingertip speed focus control that allows one-hand focusing of the flashlight, and it also has a Beam Lock system that allows the user to twist the front bezel and lock the light into a precise beam size. The HP7’s Cyclone heat sink system features an aluminum pedestal that sits below the LEDs to decrease heat buildup. This improves the LED lifespan and helps produce maximum light output. It can run up to 3.5 hours. This new flashlight weighs 7.2 ounces and has a diameter of 1.24-inches. The Bezel is 1.49 inches across. It comes with a heavy-duty nylon sheath. There is a slot at the butt for a lanyard.

Best of SHOT Show Products Trijicon®, Inc. Unveils the New SRS™ Reflex Sight

The profile length of the new Trijicon SRS™ is short and the advanced list of features is long, as the innovative products continue from Trijicon. The new Trijicon SRS (Sealed Reflex Sight) is a reflex-type sight with a unique optical design, housed in a body length of only 3.75 inches that virtually eliminates the “tube-effect” common with other, competitive red-dot sights. The result — a field of view that essentially provides no obstruction to shooters. That means lightning-fast target engagements at CQB distances with no distraction from the shooter’s situational awareness. The SRS is ideal for military, law enforcement and recreational applications on a variety of firearm platforms from AR’s to shotguns. Equally impressive is the technology built into powering the LED-lighted 1.75 MOA aiming point that includes ten brightness settings – including three NVG settings. The SRS is powered by a solar panel and a single, common AA battery. This uniquely patented configuration allows the user years of illumination life from a single battery by offering an intuitive “solar assist,” that is, drawing on battery power only when the solar cell requires additional energy support for illumination based on ambient conditions. Surveillance While Remaining Undetected

Official Scout Sniper Periscope, NSN 1240-01-571-5004 PROBLEM SOLVED: “The SWATScope provides a perfect tool to overcome issues with low walls and limited cover and concealment on rooftops and other structures used by Coalition Forces for observation in urban combat (windows, jersey barriers, etc.). Currently, the Coalition Forces ability to conduct observations from rooftop positions is greatly limited due to exposure to sniper fire and harassing small arms fire. However, in many occasions the best way for leaders to develop situational awareness while in contact is from an elevated position.” —Colonel U.S. Army, Task Force 1-9, Iraq
