Urban Archipuncture Urban Transformation center small-scale but socially catalytic interventions

Archipuncture, a term which define an architecture in attempt to generate the soul of the space. The main emphasis of project is not much about then building in the correct form, however, it is an attempt to be a catalytic intervention for better social engagement.

This project calls for a design of an Urban Transformation Centre, one of the goverment effort abd initiative providing the urban community a centralised location for core government agencies, public amenities and services.

Nested in a young town, Bandar Tasik Selatan, it is still going through phases of development that ultimately will make it into the towns and cities. This under developing township has been introduced the transportation terminal Terminal Bersepadu Selan (BTS).

Marco Casagrande (2009) defines that the theory of urban acupuncture combines urban design with the traditional Chinese medical theory of acupuncture. Acupuncture relieves stress in the body while urban acupuncture relieves stress in the environment.

With township continuing to grow and issues of lacking sense of attachment to environment, a small scale but socially catalytic interventions, serve as needles that revitalize the whole by healing the parts - to solve local particular issues.

These small-scale catalyst are placed at each floor of UTC and scattered around the administration offices for each agencies, they are pragmatically programmed to the specific deparment through simple addition and subtraction creating seating spaces, discusion area, exhibition space and other socialable area.

Urban archipunture promises to act as a catalyst, setting in motion the overall transformation and encouraging community engagement from the ground to top level of the building. I believe that these small-scale catalyst is not derived from solid walls or floors but it is rather a solution for this experiment which users are the variables and the outcome is rather an event or process than a building itself.

Lynch (1960) defines that wayfinding is a consistent use and organization of definite sensory cues from the external environment and referred to maps, street number and route signs as way-finding devices. He mentioned that the imaginable or memorable features of space are used by people to assist wayfinding. Landmark as the memorable space to help navigator to orient the location; distinct is the area that place navigator in the part of environment; and nodes are the marking points where wayfinding decision are made.

The term “City Image” as first defined by Kevin Lynch in his book The Image of The city is “a result of a two-way process between the observer and his environment suggested distinctions and relations, and the observer-with great adaptability and in the light of his own purpose-selects, organizes and endows with the meaning what he sees.” (Lynch, 1960, p.6).

Clear city image enables one to move easily and quickly, and the more vivid and inte-grated is the physical setting, the shaper is the image of city (Lynch, 1960, pp. 3-4). Muga Riza (2011) states that “city’s image is the extent to which a person can be recognize or recall a place as being distinct from other plac-es” (as cited in Hegazy, 2016). Hegazy(2016) interprets image of the city is more like the face of the city, can be formed depends on many aspects, such as natural (landscape, topography, climate), where the others are man-made features (built environment, Architecture, Hardscape) as well as the nonphysical features like culture and traditions.

Typical waiting area served with limited sitting area for people to wait their turn. Lack of sociable and interaction at the waiting area and usually the said area just partial in front of each agencies. People are hard to interact with each other due to this environment.

Some food stall provided in UTC unfortunetely the area is not active and most of stalls are closed down.

The smell of food may disturb the people in UTC because these food stalls loacted at the level 2 which is occupied few agencies office.

Is good to give chance for local to open their business in UTC. However, the space of circulation should be clear of these goods and kiosk because this will affect the circulation flow in UTC especially peak hour, there will be many people come to UTC and rush for their stuffs.

The food stalls designed beside the main vertical circulation, escalator.

It may cause problem of congestion of human flow because everyone will passby this area to the agencies.

The spatial layout of UTC should be very clear and easy to find the way.

There is no signage in front of the agencies office and people hard to find the office from far away. Lack of interaction between rows of office and people will feel boring while walking/ waiting at the long corridor.

The wayfinding strategy in UTC is limited. The signboard and directory is not obvious for people to refer and navigate their position. The size of the signboard is not easy to read because the font size is not user-friendly for senior citizen.

Besides the location of the signboard also hard to be noticed because too high.

URBAN SEGREGATION

Most of the oďŹƒcers, stas and vendors at the site live at area outside BTS. They come here for only working purpose. This area is inactive after working hour and during weekend.

MRR2 Highway is located right in front of proposed site. However it became a segregation factor between the developing area at the left side and the village at the right side. This huge gap has impact on the interactive and sociability of community.

UNACCESSIBILITY FOR PEDESTRAIN

EXPLOITATION OF PUBLIC SPACE

The pedestrian walkway around the site is not well-structure and this causes the user more prefer to use own transportation or public transport rather than walking. Lack of landmark also be the factor because they unable to navigate their route to destination.

There open public space surrounded the site however it is misuse. Some of the space used as parking lots. Providing more parking spaces is not useful to overcome the accessibility issue of this area.

The concept of acupuncture is using small-scale interventions to transform the larger uban context.

Applying the same idea that inspired by urban acupuncture concept in the design of Urban Archipuncture with creating a public space at the site to attract user who passby this Urban transformation center and to generate the sense of place attachment for the community.

The small-scale spaces will located at each oor as social waiting area to increase the sociality of the user.

In order to be the placemark for the community, a visible entrance is necessary in the design. A visible and welcoming entrance can attract user to enter or passby the UTC. The direction of entrance should follow the flow of the human circulation flow which is the pedestrian circulation so that they can easy to navigate where is the entrance.

Maximize the green open space in the design of UTC to bring the user close to nature and blend the hectic activities in UTC. Create higher floor level to bold the location of UTC and get more attention from the user from MRR2 Highway and TBS direction.

To achieve the Green Building Index, recycled material used in design of UTC such as Polli-Brick Wall.

SITE + REQUIREMENT

BUILABLE AREA

A 4295sqm land located beside MRR2 Highway and zoned under community service area.

Maximize the plot and construction of the total volume of the 8-stoyed building including basement carpark in accordance with the project height restrictions.

IDENTIFYING A CORNER + GREEN SPACE

PASSIVE DESIGN

The single mass was split into two parts and cut o area turned into a public park allowing people in both side of the residential area and transit terminal to gather, creating an active space within the site. This corner enhancing views towars the street and improve physical identity and characteristic of the space.

North and South are the long sides of the mass. Create layering roof as shading for the open green space.

Rotating the form to maximize sun exposure to the space.

VISUAL + WAYFINDING

Programs are organized vertically to retain all required adjacencies and visual connections in a volume. Public area is zoned from ground floor up to level 2 and agencies are designed from level 3 to level 7. Agencies are designed in different levels according to type of cluster (facilities and services).

Forming visible entrance welcoming user from different directions and opening up the views towards Terminal Bersepadu Selatan. Leaning of the visible ribbon line from roof towards courtyard and pathway to enrich the wayfinding for pedestrian along the pathway and create dominate & recognizable place in the environment to navigate pedestrian from place to place.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

SMALL-SCALE CATALYST

Horizontal louvers with planter box facade at both North and South surface allow natural ventilation while regulating privacy and solar gain. Reusable material placed at West and South elavation as sound insulator to block noise from MRR2 highway and also reflect excess sunlight.

Placed at each floor and scatter around. Each area has it own activities and also act as a waiting area for user to wait for their turn.

POLLI-Brick™ Wall

Innovation POLLI-Brick™ is a revolutionary building material made from 100% recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate Polymer. It is translucent, naturally insulated, and durable. The modular 3-D honeycomb self-interlocking structure makes it extremely strong without any chemical adhesives, while weights only 1/5 of the standard curtain wall systems. The cross-industry R&D hybridization keeps the recycle process economically efficient when mass manufacture on-site, which dramatically reduces the carbon footprint compared to conventional glass and steel structure.

Modularization With the unique honeycomb shape interlocking units, POLLI-Brick™ can be assembled into rectangular panel or any form in customized dimension. The performance enhancement films enforces the panel strength while it provides extra protection against UV, water and fire. The PC coating makes the POLLI-Brick™ panel scratch-resistant and easy-clean.

The POLLI-Brick™ panel sustains radical lateral force, up to 1.5 times the worst hurricane, without any damage and seepage.

HOLEDECK Slab System

HOLEDECK is a waffle slab system and this system able to build the optimal reinforced concrete structure. This evolution of concrete structures can save up to 20% off the total built volume and the corresponding carbon footprint. Due to its modulation, the system enable installations and elements specifically designed for standard modular roofs.

HOLCEDECK is similar to a conventional bidirectional slab and steel consumption and execution time even though the HOLEDECK patented system saves volume of concrete. As concrete consumption is decreased, the structure's self weight and the loads transferred to foundations is reduced.

HOLEDECK obtains a reduction of about 20% of the total built volume, meaning a whole storey can be gained for every 5 floors, significantly increase the floor area with the same volume.

Acoustic Performance

HOLEDECK can reduces columns and/ or load bearing wall by achieving 10 to 20% savings on façades and interior walls. Elements such as suspended ceiling and/ or raised floor can be eliminated and facilities and services can be supported on the deck’s ribs.

The geometry of the slabs provides the HOLEDECK system an excellent acoustics behavior. It is able to absorb a wide range of the sound spectrum.

Removal of Suspended Ceilings Due to the high quality of the polypropylene moulds used, excellent quality finishes can be archieved, eliminating the need of suspended ceilings. The raised floor can also be removed as the electrical systems can be installed in the roof.

Urban Blooming Youth Station experience health knowledge

The Youth Hostel provide accommodation for young people of differing nationalities, cultures and social background to meet informally, share experiences to enrich their knowledge and expand their social circle to learn from one another.

This project is to propose a Youth Station that need to envision the living of tomorrow located at USJ 1, Subang Jaya. By ‘adapt to changes’, the design of accommodation need to have interaction with the environment, immerse into the social, economic and environmental context for the future use.

Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright, “the good building is not one that hurts the landscape, but one which makes the landscape more beutiful than it was before the building was built.”

From the beginning of the process and due to the conditions of the site, it was proposed to conserve the largest number of trees on the property. This became the starting point to study the relation of the building with its immediate context where concepts such as permeability, integration and the interior-exterior relationship became fundamental in the design process.

The existing big tree is the core of the whole courtyard of the building, as the shape of the building is formed according to the location of the existing trees. Users can walk throught the cicular course pathway connecting open lobby to the top floor, where a path raises allowing the users to be in constant contact with the natural surrouding.

By developing ‘the exterior is lived in the interior and the interior is projected outwards’ idea, minimize the usage of solid wall and incorporated with wire mesh features to allow views even in dormitory.

Besides, it is also integrated with the idea of plant nursery that embrance the building to create social interaction for the youth to involve themselve in planting a tree. This space are also planned to gather youth for sharing session like different background, culture and experiences.

The idea of the building was developed as a proposal for a place located at the middle of a hectic city, as life increasingly moves toward crowded city, it is aimed to create a space that caters for enjoyment the nature of the environment.

Urban blooming focuses on its design planning that insert a building that are in harmony with the natural environment and to preserve existing vegetation on the site. Landscape as primary material is an integral part of spatial construction, taking light and shadow, ventilation and the landscape itself which is inherent part of the site.

To encourage the visitors to explore the space, the building is a structure of exposed, monolithic concrete and plastered on the exterior. The shape/ orentation of the building not only creates free owing and curvilinear organic forms, but also allow the site’s existing trees grown through the building.

Urban blooming provide a space as planting nursery, youth who staying in is giving chance to enhance the natural beauty. They can join the planting program, donate the plants to local authority and the plant can be use for roadside landscaping. In another wirds, they are contribute the natural of Subang Jaya and after the days, they can visit their ‘baby’ when they travel to Malaysia. Thus, this able to promote Education and Heath Tourism.

Meanwhile, this program encourage the social interaction as providing sharing session with the youth who comes from various nation and culture.

The absence of walls in public space allows the internal space to get view to landscape on 360 degrees.

Also the wall less concept approach the user interact each other from space to space and this open structure create good natural ventilation.

Breaking the Vertical Neighbourhood Center

The project is calls for a neighbourhood center to be created for the residential around the area, where there are highly-dense terrace house and commercial shops surrouding the proposed site while the south of site is facing to leisure park with lake.

Connect to the nature and break the vertical proďŹ le line As to create natural landmark by restoring and connecting the discontinuous human ow to the back of the site and to connect the nature at the front of site.

The main emphasis of the neighbourhood center is to remodelling the inuences of neighbourhood and communities on spatial activities and physical forms. Besides, a local living sports zone also serves as a community space for residents from child to elders.

It als function as public space, which corresponds to a well side or a shaded community yard where user gather for chat or exchange information.

With the concept of consilence, the programmatic element blended systematically with a spontaneous interaction and orientation with the symbolic axis that found in the site.

The neighbourhood center provides a framework for programmatic mixing which stack vertically and interact horizontally to provide a visual and physical overlapped elements. An accessible roofscapes designed to blend the outdoor while engaging the surrouding context.

A place encompassing fuction, sense and culture The cultural and public amenities are concentrated at the lower level of the center. It proposes a vertical open-air public space is well incorporated with the outdoor garden connect to leisure park. It becomes an activeplace for strolling and relaxing at any time.

Residensi PR1MA @ Jalan Jubilee An affordable lifestyle housing for middle-income households

Residensi PR1MA @ Jalan Jubilee is an affordable apartment that consists of 1 block 31 storey built on 10042 sqm of land. Located along Jalan Jubilee, Kuala Lumpur, the project aims to provide middle-income households able to afford a home in the vibrant city of Kuala Lumpur.

Mid of May 2018, contributes to assist the Project Architect throughout the job running process with involement in meetings and site visits. Given task is pickup administrative tasks such as filling, preparation of certificate of stage completion and production of meeting minutes.

The project comprises 543 units with 3 layouts (Type A, B & C) to choose from andsitting on sitting on 7 levels of car park podiums with residential amenities such as gynasium and swimming pool on top of it. Besides, there is playground at ground level and outdoor garden at Level 15 and Level 23.

Working as a part of a team in the preparation of as-built drawings and shadow the Architect to prepare Certificate of Completion and Compliance (CCC) forms.

The unit sizes (Type A, B & C) range from 84 to 102 sqm. The orientation of the units are strategically planned to skew away from direct sunlight and designed with minimal intention to showcase simplicity of form and order.

PV 18 Residence @ Setapak, KL Metropolitan Living Moments

The 5.56 acre project is located at Danau Kota Lake which is next to Platinum Lake City, Kuala Lumpur.

This site is easily accessible from Jalan Langkawi, Setapak and it is also well connected to Suria KLCC and Bukit Bintang via DUKE and MRR2 Highway. This project has a total of 1250 apartment units that make up three blocks: Block (40 Storey), Block B (42 Storey) and Block C (33 Storey) on 8 levels of elevated carpark podiums.

This apartment development consists of 3 layouts to choose from and sizes range from 86 to 114 sqm, including dual key concept. All blocks are arranged and focused towards a large open landscape area with inďŹ nity swimming pool and integated amenities.

September 2018, playing a part with the team to site visits and biweekly meeting at project site. Asisst with administrative tasks, such as ďŹ lling, generating meeting minutes and documentation.

And mid of year 2019, working closely with team on amendment of architectural drawings and prepare and submit dawings with particulars for building approval.

MARQ Bizpark @ North Klang Seemless Blend of Business and Retail

MARQ Bizpark is the new, imprcable commercial development aimed towards creating a vibrant yet pulsating business hub at North Klang for modern day business development.

This development surrounded by immediate vicinity of industrial properties with mixed residential and commercial properties MARQ Bizpark is easily accessible via major highways.

It comprises 12 semi-detached retail office units, 15 cluster retail office units and 1 single retail shop unit sitting on an 8 acre site located along Jalan Kapar, Klang. The 3-storey retail offices have built-up ranging from 7,300sqft to 11,100 sqft.

MARQ is a low-density commercial project with comtemporary facade with full height glass window and high ceiling design able to accomodate any form of business. This design also to cater for those who need an office to showcase their product especially light industrial use owner.

Act in a support role to the team from involvement in meetings and undertaking site visit. Carry out administrative tasks such as certification of stage completion, progress claims and meeting minutes.

During the construction stage, liase and manage main contractors, sub-contractors and suppliers ensuring they build to brief, specification and quality.

Sales Gallery @ Setapak recreate an urban green playscape

Spanning across approximately 9.5 acres, the master planning consists of sales gallery, drive-thru restaurants, commercial hub and community green space.

The structure of the proposed building is made out of existing steel framing with brick wall and wrapped with facade screen to look more dynamic and attractively stylish.

The idea is to complete with eco-friendly elements that reduces energy use to lower the maintenance cost.

Working closely with team to develope the detail of 3D model and created renderings and perspectives for presentation.

Assist project architect to develop architectural drawings based on building speciďŹ cation and sketches and documentation for submission.

Subsequently, worked on details for tender drawings.

PAPM @ Titiwangsa Aordable Housing for Royal Malaysia Police

This proposed site is located at Jalan Temerloh, next to titiwangsa Lake and city center, Kuala Lumpur. The total project developmet covers an area of approximately 62 acre.

Work closely with the teams in the preparation of 3D visualation.

Understand the concept and reproducing/ interpretation the architect concept into a graphic from.

This proposal consists of eight 32-storey typical PAPM blocks and two 32-storey exclusive PAPM blocks, total 4724 units in three layout.

Assist architect to prepare presentations in graphic medium.

Oasis Condominium is the new housing deveopment in Ipoh city. Where others are merely concerned with style and function, Oasis Condominium considers the holistic aspects of living. The design intention of this project is to promote interaction and relationship building with green spaces outdoors due to the site condition, which is adjacent to River Kinta.

Jun 2014, playing a part with the team to provide ideas and concepts for proposal and created draft renderings and persepctives of the design.

Proceed to development order submission stage, drafted architectural plans and preparation of documents for submission purpose.

This development conceived as a low-density residential project comprises of 2 blocks 13-storey of comtemporary designed condominium with 10 units per oor consisting of 4 dierent layouts.

Housing Seksyen 10 is a guarded community in Kota Dmansara sprwling over 9.43 acres and nestled in between the city centre and suburb. Overall developments of 100 units of 3-storey terrace link homes and 12 units of 3-storey semi-detached homes was created for three-generational families.

This collection of 3-storey houses boasts beautiful facade and practical layouts that oer lots of space and comfort for all members of the family.

January 2012, contributed as part of a design team to produce 3D modelling and render perspectives for presentation purpose.

Housing Scheme, Tronoh a blossoming township

Housing scheme across 33 acres of prime freehold land and located 30km south of Ipoh, Perak.This project comprises of 3 phases: Phase B, D & E. The overall planning of this scheme consists of 70 units 2-storey terrace house (Plot B), 21 units 2-storey terrace house & 64 units single storey terrace house (Plot D) and 92 units single storey terrace house (Plot E)/

Study and develop design under the supervision of architect. Simultaneously managed the development of architectural drawings for Developmetn Order and Building Plan submission.

Coordinate with consultant on the engineer input and contributed preparation of submission documents.

With 3 bedrooms (single storey) and 4 bedrooms (double storey), these home are designed to cater to typical family use but are also exible enough to accommodate the needs of an extended family when required.

Modular System

Idea of Diverse Transition Space comes from the most fundamental function as a construction site office which is the flexibility of the building able to achieve modularization for disassembling and reorganize. As site offices are generally temperary in nature, they are often provide a large overhangs roof and platform for the site workers to gather and dicussion. Therefore, this space must be constructed from portable, or modular buildings.

Diverse Transition Space proposes an idea of designing a flexible, dynamic floor plan, where simultaneous events occur or user deman varies, the redefinition of space would be feasible.

Program X-site seeks to expand the syntax and aesthetics of architecture by presenting an architecturally themed installation in the Taipei Fine Art Museum’s outdoor plaza. Hence, the activities in Diverse Transition Space should create interaction with public and to maintain the essence of site office as connecting the space to Musuem. The structure of Diverse Transition Space is connected to entrance hallway of Musuem.

The free plan concept allows to add more free layers on the base. To create free flowing space, the capacity is very flexible which can be changed by moving screen. It can form the workshop space to exhibition space, meeting room, resting space and also part of the transition space to Musuem. Also the paths can be widely or closure to create public and private space.

The long hallway is the transition space allowing visitor to travel from one space to another spacecombination with different activities under the large roof.

Under the modular large roof, there are number of portable folding screen, when here comes to change the programs, the space will be refined by moving the screen.

design intention The building height of la clarte is only one and half storey. The use of timber construction in this project should be substantial. The site analysis and the environmental factors should consider in design. The application of natural ventilation and natural day lighting must be evidenced in the design.

Rain Tree @ Rimbayu Innovate for Tomorrow - IJM Competition

‘Innovate for Tommorw’ is theme for IJM Land Competition 2017, where it aims to designing concepts for an actual 20.85 acres of land located at Bandar Rimbayu township. In the true spirit of IJM Land, the innovations not only addresses a need and solves a problem, but it also seizes ideas for a future township.

In order for a design to be called innovative, an idea must be replicable at an economical cost that satisfy the design requirement. Besides, to develop a healthier lifestyle trend by using eco-friendly materials and construction techniques that are cost effective to increase building effiencies.

Rain tree @ Samanea Saman is best-known tropical tree in Malaysia with its rough wrinkled bark and developing lushes canopy that brings comfortability and symbolises lush living.

Rain Tree residensi introduce townhouse concept to Bandar Rimbayu township, where surrounding by double-storey link house and clubhouse @ The Club. Townhouse is a hybrid of condo (sharing) and terrace house (landed) concept where multiple owners owning strata properties that sharing coomon roof, wall, floor and structure.

When land has become scarcer and lifestyle changes, rather than being built horizontally, the units can be built vertically. Townhouse also create multilevel community engagement especially for t1o or more generation staying together under single roof, it is a perfect idea, maintaining the provacy and yet accessible to each other.
