A Fairytale Wedding Weaved with Tradition at Bow Valley Ranche

Picture this enchanting love story unfolding against the backdrop of an elegant, almost fairytale-like wedding theme. A symphony of lilac and lavender hues, carefully chosen to grace the canvas of their special day. The Bow Valley Ranche, nestled in the scenic embrace of Fish Creek Park, provided the perfect stage for this romantic tale, with its historical Ranche house adding a touch of timeless charm.

A nod to the bride’s Italian roots brought a unique cultural aspect to the celebration – the tradition of a bomboniere. This custom, passed down through generations, involved a box of “bonbons,” traditionally sugarcoated almonds. In the language of symbolism, each almond carried wishes for the newlyweds: health, wealth, happiness, family, and a long life. This tradition had woven itself into the wedding stories of the bride’s family, from her mom and aunt to cousins and Nonna.

Let’s whisk away on an odyssey that began 11 years ago, under the academic spires of university. Meet our couple, originally from Ontario, who dared to trade in their corporate attire for a life infused with wanderlust and digital marketing adventures. This decision unfurled a tapestry of experiences - a journey that saw them travel through 12 countries, transform a humble van into a camper, and ultimately, find a new home amidst the breathtaking Canadian Rockies.

Now, picture this dynamic duo falling head over heels for the towering mountains. Hiking, once a casual pastime, evolved into a shared passion that cemented their bond. But wait, there’s more! The proposal wasn’t just a mere bend of the knee; it unfolded on a trail at the Columbia Icefield, with the majestic Athabasca Glacier as a witness. A scene straight out of a romance novel, right?

As their love story continued to ascend, the logical next step was a wedding that mirrored their shared love for the great outdoors. Enter the hiking elopement, a celebration of love amidst the stunning backdrop of their new hometown, Canmore, Alberta. The chosen trail overlooks the majestic Three Sisters and Mount Lougheed, creating a panoramic stage for their vows, where trails become aisles, and mountain vistas frame the chapters of their shared forever.

A Floral Journey from Closet to Celebrations

Gylia is the floral fairy godmother whose love for weddings and flowers sprouted at the tender age of 18. Picture this: a small utility closet in her apartment, 5 wedding gowns, and bouquets for friends. Fast forward 30+ years, a husband, and a trio of little cupids later – behold, the flourishing family business, Events & Co, now a fullservice Planning, Design, and Décor wonder in Calgary, Southern Alberta, and B.C.

But hold on, like any good love story, there were hurdles. Enter the notorious Pandemic. Gylia and her team had to pivot, get creative, and think outside the box. “We were a home-based studio, so overhead wasn’t a beast, but we still wanted to be in business, so we had to be creative!”

In 2019, they birthed small elopement packages – a magical solution for intimate ceremonies. Think arch with flowers, chairs, a welcome sign, and flowers for the lovebirds. Show up, and Events & Co did the rest – set up, tear down, the whole shebang. Unbelievably, the intimate wedding trend stuck around, with clients even jetting in from the USA for Rocky Mountain nuptials.

Fast forward to 2022, new services were blooming. Kaylee, the wedding planning maestro, joined the crew, and Blush Blooms Florals took center stage. In 2023, a whopping 95% of their florals became Luxury Floral Rentals – sustainable, zero waste, and oh-so-gorgeous. The arrangements transition seamlessly from ceremony to reception, making dreams come true without breaking the bank.

Gylia spills the petals on what makes Events & Co a bouquet above the rest? They’re a one-stop-shop, one vendor extravaganza. From farm tables to Chiavari chairs, linen rentals to decor, they’ve got it all. And guess what? They even expanded, setting up shop in Strathmore with the Four Sisters Group, making exclusive magic happen at Four Sisters Farm.

We were a home-based studio, so overhead wasn’t a beast, but we still wanted to be in business, so we had to be creative!”

Gylia and her team are handson artists, orchestrating floral symphonies and overseeing decor with finesse. “We are a very unique company,” she says, and we couldn’t agree more.

It’s easy to get so caught up getting ready, greeting guests, sticking to a strict schedule of events, making speeches and taking photos that the day is done before you’ve even taken a breath to savor just how special each moment is!

The flowers will need to be packed carefully according to instructions provided by Sarah. If it’s not possible to get your exact flowers to Wild Petals Boutique, she can also recreate a similar bouquet to preserve instead.

The Creation Process

Once your flowers are delivered, Sarah will carefully dry them for 3 weeks using silica gel. She can also use already air-dried flowers, this will create a more vintage look as opposed to the fresh effect of silica.

After this, Sarah will arrange the flowers in a mold of your choosing before applying several layers of resin to encapsulate their look. The resin process can take several weeks before each piece is finally hand polished and ready for shipping or pickup.
