HEALTHY HAIR TIPS For the Summer Season

the Tame frizz!

WITH SASHA & MARYKE FROM

PANTAGES ON PARK SALON AND SPA

USE A THERMAL PROTECTANT BEFORE STYLING WITH HEAT. Before blow-drying your hair, spray in Unite 7 Seconds Leave In. You can then use 7 Seconds Glossing Spray before using heat.

FIGHTING FRIZZ Summer is great for lots of things, but not frizzy hair! Products are key in taming the frizzies! Unite’s 7 Seconds Leave In, U Luxury Oil, and Smooth & Shine are great to help tame down unwanted frizz. Try Boosta Thickening for cute curls and wavy hair.

WASH YOUR HAIR LESS OFTEN! If you can handle it, try not to wash your hair every day. Skipping a few shampoos will allow the natural oils to develop with more time in between washes. Using 7 Seconds Dry Shampoo or Loma Dry Shampoo will leave your hair looking refreshed.

SUNSCREEN AND PROTECTING YOUR HAIR FROM UV RAYS IS CRUCIAL! Using a UV protectant on your hair will shield it from the sun’s harmful rays. The Unite 7 Seconds Leave In has a UV protectant and will leave your hair feeling soft and frizz free.

AIR DRY YOUR HAIR Skip the blow dry and embrace your natural texture on a hot summer day using Unite Beach Day. The natural sea salt creates beach like texture – an effortless tousled and sexy look. 14

For Curls & waves

SATIN PILLOW CASES These silky smooth pillow cases provide great benefits to your hair because it causes less friction between the pillow case and your hair – preventing tangles and breakage. The silky fabric retains moisture, preserving the natural oils in your hair.

DEEP CONDITIONING We all love a little extra attention and TLC, and your hair will love you for it too! Treat your locks to a deep conditioning treatment with Joico’s K-Pak Shine & Repair treatment or Unite’s Blonda Fix for the blondes. Here’s why you will LOVE it – it deeply repairs and nourishes your hair, adds instant shine, and locks in color. Making sure you take these simple steps will help protect your hair during the summer season and allow you to enjoy all of your favorite summer activities without damaging your hair.

A DREAM COME TRUE IN SO MANY DIFFERENT WAYS Daydreams Esthetic Spa and Training Centre is a soothing, upbeat break from a frenzied world. BY KYRA HOGGAN PHOTOS BY STUDIO 78

Daydreams offers a massive array of services: manicure/pedicure, facials, lashes, mineral baths, body treatments, hair removal, makeup and more. Coming soon is their full Medi Spa menu. This will include injectables and all the latest laser services. he facility has been a long-standing dream of owner Heather Day’s, who waited and waited for the building she’s in to become available, with its 4,000-square-foot main floor and 3,000 square feet downstairs.

T

“After a six month extensive renovation, the space is absolutely beautiful,” she said. “On staff are 10 estheticians and two master stylists,” she said, adding there’s also the training centre downstairs, with 14 students providing the same services (with supervision) at lower prices. Daydreams estheticians are led by their amazing Director of Training, Jill Lenton, who works to continue with education and guidance when they join the Daydreamers(The Daydream Team). A stylist herself, Day has worked in the beauty industry for 30 years, and has also opened an 800-square-foot Beauty Boutique in Daydreams, featuring Canadian-made jewelry by Glee and Eminence Organics skincare products (also Canadian). “We get a lot of foot traffic and walk-ins,” she said. “And we’re opening an online store soon, for added convenience for our clients.” Despite being elegant and opulent, the atmosphere is actually very laid back, with friendly, welcoming staff and accessible pricing. “Absolutely, come on in with your work boots and coveralls on – we welcome everyone and anyone,” said owner Heather Day.

“People come as our guests and leave as a friend.” Day said the services and products available may be what draw people in, but it’s the warm, cheery atmosphere that keeps them coming back. “This is the dream, loving the place that you work,” she said, adding she has family working there as well. “My son, Kolby Day takes care of the back end office and my daughter-in-law, Lindsay Day, is our Director of Sales and Service. Lindsay’s just a gleaming ray of sunshine around here – everyone adores her.” As a result of all this, Daydreams boasts amazing staff retention, which is unheard of in the industry. “Our 18 employees were chosen very, very carefully,” Day said. “We want the highest quality training and knowledge, but also people who are engaging and will enhance the relaxing, revitalizing atmosphere we’ve created. “I want everyone to enjoy the Daydreams experience – it’s a happy place to visit,” she added. “People should be able to come here and just unplug and unwind. “We are honoured that our guests choose us and we strive to meet and exceed all their expectations.” Ultimately, she said, while Daydreams has been her dream for many years, she wants to use it to make others’ dreams a reality, too. 4 STEALTHY WAYS TO KEEP YOUR

Family Healthy BY MINT STAFF

Living a healthy lifestyle takes effort and diligence, but with common stressors of day to day life, health can take a backseat to jobs, social engagements and tempting treats. While adopting more healthful habits may not be top-of-mind for your family, there are some simple and sneaky ways to incorporate them into your family’s routines. Consider these stealthy tips to sneak more healthy habits into your family’s lifestyle.

TAKE A

Day Trip

Take your family (and your dog) on a visit to a local farmer’s market to take advantage of in-season finds, like fresh, colourful fruits and vegetables. They might think it’s just a fun excursion, but it can actually be an engaging and educational activity that exposes them to the vibrancy and flavour or in-season fruits and vegetables and the nutrients they can add to their diets.

24

MINT Westman

MINT Westman

25

INCORPORATE

Sneaky Snacks Get creative with everyday snacks to find healthy additions and alternatives. Try adding veggies to your family’s smoothies, such as spinach or carrots, or toast up some granola with honey to cure a sweet and crunchy craving. Don’t forget to include your furry friend in snack time. Treats like Greenies Dental Chews are enjoyable for your pup and can help improve their oral care without them evening knowing it!

Have Fun

WITH YOUR MEALS Get your family members involved in the kitchen to help prepare nutritional meals and introduce them to good-for-you flavours and recipes. A meal-prepping session can help teach them to enjoy and appreciate healthy ingredients while learning the process of preparing a healthful meal. While your family interprets the meal as a fun activity, you can reinforce the importance of being conscious of what you’re putting into your body.

STAY

Active

Find outdoor activities that you and your family, furry family included, can enjoy for regular exercise. Walking or playing catch or checking out a new dog park are easy ways to spend quality time with your family while sneaking exercise into their day.

THE POWER OF PARTNERSHIP BY KYRA HOGAN PHOTOS BY STUDIO 78

THE POWER OF PARTNERSHIP A team of business partners is looking to compliment Brandon’s business landscape through strategic partnerships, innovative approaches, diligent work, and a hint of humour. Tanya LaBuick is the newest partner: she joined the team last year in the role of Chief Operations Officer at CW2 Construction Ltd. and Guardian Fencing Ltd., working side-by-side with President Bart Curtis and Partner PJ Crane, as well as Partner Warren Hope at Guardian Fencing. 36

MINT Westman

The firm helps commercial and residential owners successfully achieve their new build or renovation vision by providing design, construction, and contract management services. Notable recent projects include; Precision Denture, Precision Toyota, Christie’s Office Plus, ACC Animal Proteins Facility, and various projects on Canadian Forces Base Shilo. Part of CW2’s uniqueness comes from the collaboration of their partnership group. Bart Curtis, President of CW2, has 23 years’ experience in the construction industry garnered from achieving his Red Seal in Carpentry to estimating, and now running his own

Both companies were nominated for Best New Business with the Brandon Chamber of Commerce. CW2 was nominated twice, 2017 and 2018.

companies. He has worked diligently in building both companies with a fever and care much like a parent with a child PJ Crane, Vice President of the successful family business of Crane Steel Structures Ltd. who are experts in metal building systems and have over 35 years’ experience and pre-engineered metal building systems, which are commonly used for commercial, industrial and recreational facilities. LaBuick, who formed LaBuick & Co., a successful consulting business in 2002, built upon her 25 years’ experience in project management, strategy development, and high-performance team building is also a globally certified Project Management Professional (PMP) with clients such as World Rugby, Populous, and FIFA. Warren Hope of Brandon Heating & Plumbing, Grand Valley Mechanical, and Grand Valley Restaurant and Equipment Supply, adds an educated perspective and industry acumen to the Guardian team with his multiple decades of experience. WHY ADD DIVERSITY? Although LaBuick doesn’t come from a direct background in construction, she has worked in construction divisions for multiple mega-events like NFL Super Bowls and several Olympic Games. Her experience is heavy in project management and team leadership in chaotic and high stress environments. “Each of us has over two decades of experience, and that includes Tanya in her own sector,” Curtis said.

“The combined 80+ years of business experience sets both start-up companies on a foundation that can serve them in multiple ways.” Hope concurred, saying, “Anytime you introduce diversity, you also introduce opportunity.” Crane said the road to success in partnerships can be tricky, but exciting at the same time. LaBuick added, “I think it speaks volumes as to how they think and how progressive they really are that they were open to diversifying their partnership. I also think it explains their success as business people.” The collective construction knowledge of Crane, Curtis and Hope offered Guardian Fencing the acumen and for lack of a better word, guts, to go after a piece of the market that could be characterized as a monopoly. The company went through a recent reorganization and hired in new staff to compliment the partners vision of where they want to head. WHAT ARE YOU ALWAYS TRYING TO IMPROVE? Communication is a fundamental underpinning to the kind of flexible, agile, responsive operation they are creating together.

MINT Westman

37

“We talk consistently, we are trying to build the communication channels to be open and fluid so that we can keep things moving whether we are at our desks or not,” LaBuick said. “We are establishing a common purpose and do meet and talk regularly to course correct, move faster, or slower.” Hope agreed, “Developing a value-aligned partnership that focuses on common goals and complementary strengths is key to ensuring successful outcomes. I think one other key thing is that none of us take ourselves too

seriously and there is a playful banter emerging that is also building us as partners, and as a team. “ “PJ has been a really great partner in terms of building the businesses and talking through other challenges,” Curtis said. I think we all have similar risk tolerances but enough differences that we can balance the risk with calculated conversation before we leap. I’ve come to trust and rely on PJ as a mentor as I grow and stretch my own comfort zone. He’s been a great asset to me, well, all of us.” DO YOU ALWAYS GET ALONG?

WHAT WE DO CW2 Construction & Design Ltd. is a fullservice general contractor for construction, working predominantly in the commercial or industrial space, but providing services residentially as well. They boast an excellent team of 20, comprised of trades people, project managers, administrative, and management staff.

38

MINT Westman

“Nope, we don’t always get along and we definitely don’t always agree. Sometimes Bart and I walk away and come back the next day with a better perspective, other times we have a good ole’ fashioned throw down and then be done with it,” she said. Curtis commented, laughing, “She rolls her eyes a lot and I shake my head. It seems to work.” But in all seriousness, LaBuick said, “I think the important thing is that we respect each other and we have established trust and a shared vision for the companies. We want to build a different kind of construction company. “

While they each have different skill sets and areas of focus, there’s also significant overlap where the strengths they bring to the table dovetail and create a synergy of passion and energy and expertise which adds up to far more than the sum of its parts. “Strategic partnerships benefit everyone: businesses, employees and customers. Our customers benefit from the strengths and offerings each partner brings to the table,” Crane said. “Plus, deepening ties between complementary businesses fosters collaboration and longevity, and gives us the chance to offer services and solutions for our customers.” THE RECIPROCITY OF PARTNERSHIP Being accountable to each other is a good check and balance in terms of risk because the partners decide BIG things together. Progress can’t happen in one bucket and working collaboratively as partners – within the businesses as well as within their ecosystem – they all agree their goal is to improve, always, and they think this partnership sets them all up for success, collectively, and individually. Only time will tell where they end up, but for today, their foundation is solid, and they are definitely building up, wood or steel , with a combined strength.

5 Time-Saving Laundry Tips Between sorting, washing, pouring, transferring, drying and folding, laundry can often feel like a daunting chore. While you can’t skip laundry completely, you can stop those baskets from overflowing with these time-saving tips from the laundry experts at Whirlpool.

40

MINT Westman

SORT CLOTHES AHEAD OF TIME. One way to make laundry more manageable is to sort as you go. Instead of tossing dirty clothes into a hamper, distribute items into separate bins. While the exact division depends on your wardrobe, you’ll want to separate dark and light colors, as well as clothing that needs special care.

PRETREAT STAINS. Once a stained garment makes its way through the dryer, chances are the stain is set for life. Protect your clothes by pretreating stains as soon as possible to help keep even the toughest stains from setting in. If you’re unsure of how to treat a particular stain, such as spaghetti sauce or grass, Whirlpool offers a Stain Guide within its laundry app that provides helpful, step-by-step instructions*.

KEEP YOUR SPACE ORGANIZED. Just like it’s hard to cook in a messy kitchen or work at a cluttered desk, you’re less likely to be productive in a sloppy laundry room. Clean and organize your laundry area periodically so you have easy access to the supplies you need and a clean surface for folding fresh laundry or switching loads.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF TECHNOLOGY. New smart home technology is making laundry faster and easier. Whether you are on the run or across the room, you can control your washer and dryer using an app on your smartphone or a compatible voice-enabled device for hands-free assistance. You can track how much time is left on your load while cooking dinner, assign washing settings while enjoying family movie night or begin a cycle when running errands. Touch-screen technology also guides you to the correct washer or dryer presets, or you can preprogram cycles of your own to tackle specific care settings for items like baby clothing or bulky comforters.

FINISH WITH EASE. For some, it’s not the washing that makes laundry a drag, it’s the folding. Hitting the tumble button to shake out wrinkles is one solution, but there are alternatives. Use your dryer’s end-of-cycle buzzer as an easy way to keep track of when a load needs your attention or make folding a fun game with your family.

Whether you are an outdoorsy person or not, you will both love this outdoor date night!

Step away from the stress of everyday life. Sometimes keeping things simple is necessary to decompress. Spending time together enjoying good food, good drinks and most importantly, good company, is the perfect end to the day.

PLAN YOUR TABLESCAPE.

SKIP THE COOKING!

With a few blooms from the grocery store or your garden, a tablecloth and some framed photos or decorative items of varying heights, you can create an easy tablescape that makes you feel like you’re in a restaurant, rather than your own backyard.

Order take out and use your good china. Use cloth napkins and your fancy cocktail glasses. Giving us all the right feels of a glam night out, this way it feels special and a bit more elevated than your average deck dinner. If you want to splurge a little, you could also hire a private chef to do all the cooking and serve you.

KEEP IT LIGHT. We LOVE candlelight! Bring in lots of candles! Or you can hang up twinkle lights around your backyard. Even white Christmas lights will do if you want to use something you already have!

MAKE BEAUTIFUL MUSIC TOGETHER. Bring Alexa or your phone and a speaker outside to enjoy your favorite tunes with dinner. When you’re done eating, cue up “your song” and dance together!

EVERY PROJECTS STARTS & FINISHES SUCCESSFULLY WITH THE RIGHT TEAM! WITH MIKE AND COREY PETERS FROM

ALAIR HOMES

Have a construction project in mind? What is your strategy to execute and accomplish this project successfully?

Far too often we receive phone calls from project owners who have already started a good portion of their project and are reaching out to us in desperation, searching for an expert to come in and assess their project situation and rescue them from their close approaching project doom!

44

MINT Westman

WHY ARE THEY DOING THIS? Typically what we see is they have attempted to manage the project on their own, or have hired the wrong construction manager and quickly learned they are uninformed, uneducated and unequipped to run a successful project right through to completion. It usually becomes apparent quickly, the problem is not so much the project, rather it started with the TEAM (or lack of TEAM) involved in the project. Our hearts go out to these people as there is nothing worse than one of your largest investments in life, your home, business project, or your life long dream, turning into a complete nightmare right before your eyes! From what we have learnt from Alair’s thousands of years of combined experience in this industry, is every construction project starts and ends successfully with a solid TEAM! But who do you want to start with on your team? If you are a project owner, you are already one of the key team members among many others! First things first, we recommend you start with finding your Construction Manager. Your Construction Manager will help assist and guide you with your entire project plan from start to finish! Everything from project designs, permits, project scopes, obtaining pricing from trades and suppliers required in the project (whom you’ve had input in selecting), material & product selections, to budgets and schedules!

HOW DO YOU FIND THE RIGHT CONSTRUCTION MANAGER FOR YOU? Simply - start dating. Dating? This may be your scene already, but if you’re already in a committed relationship, please keep it that way! By dating, we recommend that you spend a good amount of

time communicating and getting to know your prospected Construction Manager before you actually pick them for your team. This is easily done by email, phone and most importantly in-person meetings. Test them to see if they show interest in you. Do they respond to your phone calls and emails in a reasonable amount of time? Do they take the time to meet with you in person? If they don’t, do you think they should be entrusted with so much more? Do you like them? Can you see yourself with them in a long-term relationship? The project may only take 1 month, 6 months or 1 year, but remember, you want them to stick around after the project is complete in order to take care of deficiencies or warranties that we guarantee WILL arise after the project is completed. Next, your Construction Manager should assist you in finding the right Project Designer, Structural Engineer, Mechanical Designer, Interior Designer and all your trades and suppliers for the scopes of work to be completed in your project. Remember, they should assist, not force. This is a two way relationship and just because they may have a relationship with one of these professionals does not always mean they are the right fit for YOU (the project owner) and your project. It has to feel right for everyone involved. Your Construction Manager should be willing to give you the control over your project that you deserve. Every person is unique, every project is custom, its worth it for you to find the right TEAM to eliminate the risks and secure a certain project plan to move forward on. Trust Alair Homes, we will help you find your TEAM, we will help you live better. Alair Homes Brandon 100-1300 18th Street | Brandon, MB 204.813.6953 | alairhomes.ca |

TOP LEFT Jeff & Karen placed their trust in Alair, the result was a successful home renovation. TOP RIGHT (Complex cottage build in progress at Metigoshe Lake) The right team & proper planning will take this project right through to the end, successfully. MINT Westman

A CUT ABOVE FOR YOUR FURRY LOVE BY KYRA HOGGAN

riends Fur Life Daycare and Grooming knows your pets are beloved family, and takes service to new heights to ensure a tail-wagworthy experience.

F

Owner Tami-Rae Rourke, who purchased the company this past April, says this has been a life-long pursuit for her. “It has always been my dream – I’ve been an animal lover since I was child,” she says, explaining how the stars aligned for her to buy the 12-year-old enterprise from previous owner Lynn White this spring. “I wouldn’t have been able to staff it on my own, but the timing was right, as my mom, Marion Rourke, just retired from 24 years at Cor Enterprises.” Using local company Premier Commercial Group, the two completely renovated the 900-square-foot building, by creating a modern cabin décor, and a multi-gated design to create a lower-stress, safer environment for the dogs. In addition, large patio doors and a new 200 square-foot deck was installed, which includes a ramp leading off to the massive, fenced backyard which is covered by pea-stone for cleanliness and safety. “We offer numerous options for daycare that will accommodate your busy lifestyle. This includes fulltime, part-time and membership packages, daily drop offs, and group rates for multiple dog families. Our current membership package works out to $12.50 per day, which you can’t beat.” The new facility also received a full upgrade to accommodate their two new groomers on site,

46

who are focussed on providing a stress-free and safe experience using a large hydraulic bathtub and hydraulic grooming tables. Friends Fur Life now offers online booking and your own customer portal so that you can book and view your profile at your convenience. This new system monitors and controls all aspect of your fur babies’ vaccinations, provides daily reports if requested, and allows for seamless knowledge transfer from you to them and vice versa. “We also carry the Nutri-Source dog food and will be launching some new custom label products for purchase which will be offered in the near future for in-house or online purchase.”

Tami-Rae says it’s important to them to give back to the community that supports them, and to that end, they offer a pick-up and drop-off service for grooming. They’ll actually come to your home, get your dog, do a full grooming, then bring your little one home for you. “We only charge five dollars for that service, and we give 100 per cent of that fee to local animal charities, a different one every month.” She said their goal is to provide Brandon and area with totally unique services all in the same facility. “We want to give owners the peace of mind that comes from knowing their beloved friend will be taken care of

while they are at work, shopping or at appointments, and so on.” Friends Fur Life can be found at 941 26th Street, or by phone at (204) 728-0900, or check out their Facebook page to learn more about the furry fun!

YOUR FAMILY COTTAGE LEGACY BY PRAIRIE WEALTH PLANNING CONSULTANTS

Summer has arrived, and you may have turned your attention to spending time at the family cottage. Have you considered how to transition your cottage to the next generation, or what will happen after you’re gone? TALK WITH YOUR FAMILY As the cottage owner, you still have the final word, but do you know which family members have a sincere interest in the cottage long-term? Don’t assume. It’s important to get clarity on their respective wishes – especially if you have a large or blended family.

Consult a CFP® about available options. He or she can meet with you and your family, along with other professionals, to help build a plan for your cottage and what matters most to you.

KNOW THE FINANCIAL IMPACT Cottage values have appreciated substantially in the past two decades. From a tax standpoint, when a cottage owner passes away or transfers ownership to a family member, he or she is considered to have disposed of the cottage at fair market value. This can trigger a large tax bill when it changes hands. If not well planned, your family could be faced with the decision to sell the cottage just to pay the capital gains tax. A Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) can present several solutions to ensure a seamless transition and reduce the financial impact. Some strategies may include the use of a family trust, insurance or a buy-sell agreement.

PLAN AHEAD Be proactive - review and update your will to ensure it aligns with your intentions for the family cottage.

The Importance Of

GOOD PRODUCT PHOTOGRAPHY WITH JAMIE WILLEY

STUDIO 78

The more unique your product photography is, the more a customer is going to want to buy your product, as well as increase the trust in your company. I’ve said it once, but I will say it again, high quality photos are a must! This will not only make your products look more attractive but will give your customers the vision of the full experience. Another important aspect is alternate views. Whether it be clothes, outdoor equipment or furniture to name a few, multiple views of your product will allow your customer to picture themselves wearing, using or relaxing in or on the product. Paying attention to these different details are the best ways to achieve success. If you are considering contacting a professional photography studio to create product shots for your business, keep reading to learn why you should.

SET YOURSELF APART AND LOOK SHARP! Any business needs professional product photos to make its brand highly visible, to build awareness and to generate sales. Visual representation is critical in marketing and it is more likely for a picture to become memorable when it’s unique. If your photos are unique, people will share them which can increase traffic and add new customers.

STRONGER BRAND IDENTITY Consistent and appealing images will strengthen your brand identity. Adding unique elements to make it easier for your brand to develop a strong persona. By just looking at one image, it can be become recognisable, and stand out in the sea of social media images.

64

MINT Westman

BUILD TRUST Customers need strong imagery. If they see something that appeals to them, it can be easier for them to trust your brand and want to purchase your product. With professional product photography, your visual assets will become the core of brand and your business will appear more trustworthy and personable.

WHY AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHY JUST DOESN’T CUT IT ANYMORE With so much competition, local and online, you need to do something different to really set yourself apart from the crowd, and quality photography, among other things, can be a great way to do that. Consumers can tell the difference between a passable iPhone photo and a professionally shot product image. Less than 25% of consumers trust ads. Creating professional images and setting a consistent tone for your business offerings will boost the perceived value of your products.

WHAT’S YOUR BOTTOM LINE It’s obvious that if your product images are appealing and captivating, they will affect conversion as well. People can’t pick up and check your product, so they rely only on visuals to help them understand your products. There’s too much competition nowadays, so it all comes down to buying experience and the quality of your site, buying process and customer service. Quality photos are a big part of that. At the end of the day, professional product photography is all about setting your business apart and looking as sharp and as on point as possible. Show your customers the very best angles of the products they are interested in, and the experiences they want to be a part of.
