Think simple + sleek neutrals at a pretty picnic in a field of fresh grass. A dash of pale blue + a sprinkle of soft pink mimicking our whimsical cotton candy prairie skies. Going forward, dressed as they are, arm in arm, women supporting women, under the warm spring sun.

We talked about it in the last issue and it’s still roarin’ ...the key to this trend is keeping it simple + chic. As pictured here, if you’re not feeling too wild try adding a simple accessory like this snake skin belt to a neutral light dress to look effortlessly put together. Or go for the print with a more classic style - like the wrap dress - fit for brunch, lunch, a prairie picnic or just because.

You know the ever so popular soft pink? Well meet her more sophisticated older sister... Pale blue. Pair it with white wide legged slacks + a funky, velvet, color blocked purse because nothing screams spring quite like this combo.

8

MINT Westman

Western meets 80’s chic. We have fringe and we have medium light blue denim with simple seams down the front accessorized with a bold gold earring + a snake skin classic style pump - taking this look from simple to stylish af.

How to wear the monochromatic look? ... add interest by choosing pieces with texture like this ultra rich camel set. Yes, I said set, if you don’t have a set it’s time to get one or ask your mom to go to the back of her closet and dust one off for you because baby they’re back and I personally cannot get enough of them.

You can either go with a neutral shoe, staying ultra chic in the monochromatic theme, or add a subtle print or texture in the accessories as seen with this white jumper that fits our girl like a glove.

EDITORIAL -MEETSPRACTICAL The oversized blazer has been featured since last spring, however each issue we’ve shown a different way to wear it. So if you still have yet to get one, it’s time because this baby is versatile and a classic staple piece to add to your wardrobe. Pictured here is the most high fashion of the ways to wear it; belted with biker shorts. Now if you’re not quite ready for the athleisure biker short look I’ll recap - it can also be worn in a paint suit, as a dress, or paired with your favourite blue jeans. Belts are back and we’re into it so we used them to emphasize our models’ waistlines; one with a classic skinny black belt and the other with an animal print fanny pack.

MIX-OR-MATCH The opposite of monochromatic is print on print, we paired a multi patterned blouse with a more simple pattern blazer and accented it by showing only pops of the blouse. Have fun this season: mix patterns and prints or match tone on tone. Play on the wild side with animal print or give your look a pop with colour blocking.

SIMPLE SPRING STYLES BY TYLER HORAN OF THE SNAPPY GENT PHOTOS BY STUDIO 78

This look is a perfect way to punch things up at the office during the day or if you’re looking to step outside of your regular routine for a nice night out. Pair the look with some Chelsea Boots and top it off with a classic leather jacket to add the final finishing touch. MISMATCH PATTERNS. Don’t run away from this one because mismatch is the new monochrome. Pairing different patterns together can add a unique twist to any outfit as long as you anchor it by choosing something like similar colours to pull it all together. PLAID PANTS. They’re not as scary as you think. You can go big and bold or soft and subtle depending on what you’re comfortable in but either way, they will be the center oF attention for any outfit. TRANSITIONAL JACKET The handiest one to have in your closet is the jacket that adds the final element and can finish off any look. You won’t ever go wrong with the Classic Leather Biker Jacket as it can easily transition from a more sophisticated piece when paired with a dressier outfit to a completely casual one when matched with the same type of look.

A causal look is the easiest to pull off because it’s easy to throw on what we know. Hoodie, jeans, sneakers and out the door we go. But it’s even easier to take that classic casual outfit and step it up another notch whether you’re running errands throughout the day or having a night out on the town. BRIGHT COLOURS. Bright Colours for Spring isn’t exactly ground breaking, but they are back and bigger than ever. Swap out the black or grey hoodie for a bright yellow or green and you’ve just entered into Spring 2019. LIGHT DENIM. Toss the dark denim for light wash this season and avoid exposing the knees. A pair of classic, clean light wash jeans is all you need to make casual look cool this season. FINAL TOUCHES. Incorporate even more colour into your look by tossing on a bright hat and some coloured sunnies to take on this season in style.

7 REASONS TO GET A SALTFACIAL BY VANISH SKIN CLINIC

The harsh elements of winter can do a number on your skin. We can help with that.

20

MINT Westman

1. MAJOR EXFOLIATION WITH ALL-NATURAL SEA SALT‌NO HARMFUL CHEMICALS The SaltFacial begins with an all-natural sea salt exfoliation treatment. The salt removes the top layer of dead skin, brightening dull complexions, leaving skin visibly smoother and preparing the skin to accept antioxidants, serums and moisturizers. Salt is often seen as the enemy behind bloating, high blood pressure and heart disease. However, it actually has many benefits when used on the skin! Not only is salt a powerful exfoliant, but its antimicrobial properties help kill and stave off bacteria, deeply cleansing the skin. Salt is also very absorbent. It soaks up sebum to help control and balance your

3. IMPROVE TONE, TEXTURE & COLOR FOR NOTICEABLY HEALTHIER SKIN Studies show that skin cells regenerate far faster when exposed to certain LED wavelengths. The third step in The SaltFacial treatment is LED Phototherapy. It can be used to treat acne, improve the appearance of pigmentation, enlarged pores and vascular lesions, remove redness, fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, stretch marks, age spots, and promote collagen production.

4. VISIBLE RESULTS AFTER YOUR FIRST TREATMENT We’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.

5. NO NEGATIVE SIDE EFFECTS OR DOWNTIME Most skin resurfacing techniques use trauma to damage the skin and encourage regrowth. The healing process can take days or even weeks. The SaltFacial, on the other hand, hydrates the skin while infusing medicines, making it safe and effective for all skin types. The results are immediate, with no side-effects and no downtime. Quick and painless! skin’s oil levels, preventing acne. Salt is often seen as drying but it can actually hydrate and nourish. The minerals in salt, such as calcium, magnesium and potassium, help moisturize and firm the skin.

2. REPLENISH VITAL NUTRIENTS Once the sea salt exfoliation treatment is completed, your skin is prepared for the replacement of vital nutrients that have been robbed by everyday environmental conditions. Designed specifically for aesthetic/medical procedures, The SaltFacial ultrasound technology allows the enriching and hydrating topical formulations to penetrate the skin up to 2x deeper than when topically applied.

6. ALLEVIATE STRESS LEVELS Studies show that stress can lead to unhealthy skin. Instead of turning to vices such as chocolate and sugar, which are not healthy for your skin or your waistline, opt for a more relaxing option. Not only does The SaltFacial promote healthy skin but it can help you relieve stress and feel refreshed again.

7.YOU DESERVE IT! You spend an exceptional amount of time taking care of other people. It’s time that you did something for yourself! Take an hour to re-energize and clear your mind. Nourish your soul and pamper your skin. Treat yourself, because you deserve to look and feel great! MINT Westman

PUTTING YOUR BEST FACE FORWARD - It’s Not Just For Models And Movie Stars Anymore Why shouldn’t everyone be able to put their best face forward? BY KYRA HOGGAN PHOTOS BY STUDIO 78

arika Friesen, owner of Vanish Skin Clinic, says there’s a sort of mystique around skin care that’s making average people miss out on a vital – and accessible – aspects of health and beauty.

M

“People think it’s just for the elite, for Hollywood types, and the rich and famous … but it’s not,” she said. “And it’s not just for women, either. Anyone, from young to old, would benefit from getting a proper skin care regimen.” Though skin is the body’s largest organ, it’s often the one most ignored when it comes to care and upkeep – and Friesen wants to help change that. “We want to make you look great and feel better,” she said, adding she offers a variety of treatments for a massive range of skin issues: acne, discolouration, sun spots, angiomas, rosacea, wrinkles and fine lines, hair removal, scars, skin tightening … the list goes on and on. Not to mention, of course, maintenance: the products and practices that keep your skin glowing and healthy. “How your face looks is the first impression you make when you meet someone, but it’s also the skin most exposed to the elements, day in, day out, year after year,” she said. “Everyone should have access to treatments that will make them look at feel their best.” So committed is she to the demystification of advanced skin care that she’s starting to have skin care parties – the hostess invites seven to nine friends, who get wined and dined, learn a little product knowledge, and walk away with $100 gift certificates for the clinic, while the hostess gets a $350 credit for treatments.

“It gives them a chance to try it and see what it’s all about, how it works, and how it will best serve their personal goals.” She also allows for monthly payment plans, “so you’re not out-of-pocket off-the-hop,” she said. “We’re also going to put out our own line of products that are exactly the same as the high-end ones, but are more affordable.” Broadband Light (laser) treatments are popular, as are the SaltFacial (a new treatment creating quite a buzz), facial peels, hair removal and more – so much so that she’s moving from her current oneroom clinic to a new six-room location on April 15, as well as hiring new staff. And treatments are not reserved for facial applications – hands, arms, scars, stretch marks, stomachs (and, of course, hair removal) – all can be addressed at Vanishing Skin Clinic. Finally, lash extensions and brow/lash tinting are available for a pretty finishing flourish. Regardless your needs, Friesen wants you to know that you don’t have to just live with skin that is less than you want it to be just because you’re not a movie star or model. “I plan on earning lifelong clients based on a model of trust and proven results,” she said. “Looking and feeling your best is not out of reach.”

To help market Manitoba’s unique tourism features, Farmery Estate Brewery is brewing their “Great White North” series of beers with thematic Manitoba tourism-attraction labels. The first of their “Great White North” series are the delicious “Belgian-style Wheat Ale”, an ale brewed with a barley, wheat and oat grain base touched with exotic notes of coriander and fresh oranges, featuring a beluga on the beer can, and the “Northern Light Lager”, a light and refreshing lager which features a polar bear on its label. Chris Warwaruk says, “We have a unique opportunity to showcase all the great tourism destinations of Manitoba and Canada overall to visitors from around the world, through not only our estate beer, but also our beer can design. ( SOFT ) SERVING UP HISTORY With A Brand-New Twist BY KYRA HOGGAN

PHOTOS BY DQ & STUDIO 78

From old-school authentic to state-of-the-art style, Dairy Queen fans in Brandon get the whole range of restaurants known for their consistent quality and smiling service. randon’s seasonal DQ, which opens March 1 and closes in early October every year, opened in 1954 and still has that nostalgic retro feel with a walk-up window that brings back fond summertime memories.

B

Owner Laird Lidster said the newest DQ in town, while sleek and modern, has the same evocative effect with every bite. “Dairy Queen has always been a place where families go for a treat; for celebrations big or small,” Lidster said. “It’s a special-occasion kind of place that’s associated with a lot of happy family memories.” 32

MINT Westman

Lidster should know – Brandon Dairy Queen has been a part of his family since 1973. Laird and his wife, Tracy, took over the seasonal location in 2007, after opening the Dairy Queen/Orange Julius in Shoppers Mall in 2000. Today, Laird and Tracy still run both of these, and are the proud parents of the new and contemporary DQ Grill & Chill restaurant in Corral Centre, opened on February 18th of this year. With just over 3,000 square feet and close to 60 seats, it’s easily the largest Brandon DQ yet. “It’s the first full-food DQ that Brandon has had, with menu options like burgers, fries, salads, chicken – and it has been a long time coming,” Laird said. “Fans have been asking for it for a long time, but we had to do it at the right time." “Location is really important, so you have to have a lot of patience in choosing the property. We came across this location and jumped at it. The area has a lot of traffic which is key for our industry.”

Laird thrives in the fast pace of the restaurant business, revels in dealing with customers and staff, and values his connection to the community. “Even though we’re a franchise, we’re still locally owned and operated, and our family has been a part of this for close to 50 years. We’re committed to continuing the warm, caring family legacy of our restaurants so Brandon families can create their own memories with us.” Not all the memories have to be on site, either: individualized ice cream cakes have become a family favourite for special occasions like the upcoming Mother’s and Father’s Days. It’s a modern twist on a nostalgic treat that can be enjoyed in the comfort of home (don’t forget to pre-order yours). The new location is at 915 18th St N, and can be reached at (204) 717-7700.

He said he really delights in the Dairy Queen brand. “It’s a promise of consistent quality and flavour,” he said, adding he grew up as a member of the DQ family. “Being a part of the DQ brand has been a lot of fun – I couldn’t imagine doing anything different."

ALAIR HOMES Experience the Difference BY KYRA HOGGAN

34

PHOTOS BY STUDIO 78 & ALAIR HOMES

When Mike and Corey Peters decided to take the jump and start up a franchise with Alair Homes, it felt like the obvious choice. In fact, it is safe to say that home-building is in their blood. After all, they had worked together for the past 15 years with their father’s familyrun construction company.

We did general contracting for all of our own projects while slowly expanding our areas of construction as well as project and office management.” says Corey. And although the family business had grown to a significant size, their dad wanted to start slowing down, so when Alair approached them … they decided to start up!

"

“Our parents wanted to transition out, and Alair Homes reached out to us with the opportunity, so the timing was great.” Since then, the duo has gone on to leave a trail of delighted clients in their wake. Last year in Orlando, they attended the annual Alair Homes International Conference, designed specifically for everyone across the franchise, from regional partners, partners, project managers, head office staff, and preferred vendors. It is a time to reconnect with members across the Alair brand, build new relationships, and learn from each other – and a place where Mike achieved Top Project Manager and Exceptional Project Manager awards within the entire Alair Homes organization.

“Mike and Corey Peters and Alair Homes gave us the home we always wanted,” said Karen, a Brandon client wanting a basement renovation with a new bathroom, as well as a renovation to the existing upstairs bathroom. “We know we couldn’t have done this without them and knowing they looked after everything for us took so much pressure off us. They never made us feel like we had made the wrong decision and they were with us every step of the way.” Carol and David, of Rorketon, took on a start-to-finish project with the Peters and expressed their joy at the result: “They have made our custom dream home a ‘dream come true’. Their dedication, along with their promise to see that we received a finished project, was a very fulfilling and rewarding experience for us.” So positive have been their client experiences, in fact, that Mike and Corey have a You Tube channel devoted to client testimonials describing why their own projects were so gratifying – and there are sure to be many more to follow.

Here's why THE ALAIR DIFFERENCE With Alair Homes, building relationships with clients is just as important as building or renovating homes. Mike and Corey have always been client-centric, and the fact that Alair Homes shares that value made it the perfect fit. They focus on the experience for the client – from the project planning to construction, they make the experience easy and painless for the client, while putting a lot of importance on trust. “Our clients see everything we see in their project. From the quotes and estimates to the rolling financial projections. They can see whether or not the project is on time, ahead of schedule or delayed. We offer industry experience and guidance, but ultimately the client is in control. The best part about this method is that it creates certainty for the client.” The Peters realize that the home-building industry is broken and transparency is key when it comes to creating trust. “We sit on the same side of the table as the client, not across from them. They move through the whole process with us, at a pace that they are comfortable

READY OR NOT To Start Construction? WITH MIKE AND COREY PETERS FROM

ALAIR HOMES

How do you know if you are ready to start construction on your Custom Home or Renovation Project? Here are some questions you should be able to answer “yes” to before you give the approval to start construction on your own or with any contractor. 1. DO YOU HAVE READY FOR PRICING DRAWINGS? By Ready for Pricing Drawings, we mean professional blueprints that have been designed, reviewed and approved by yourself, your draftsman or designer & engineer. Regardless of the size of your project, these blueprints require as much detail as possible prior to sharing them with any subcontractors or suppliers for quoting.

2. IS YOUR PROJECT FEASIBLE WITH YOUR LOCAL BUILDING & PERMITTING AUTHORITY? Quite often we all have great ideas, but before you become too invested, check in with your local building, planning & permitting authorities to ensure the project you have in mind is actually feasible and in alignment with best building practices, codes and local by-laws.

3. HAVE YOU DEVELOPED SCOPES OF WORK THAT MATCH EVERY DETAIL OF YOUR READY FOR PRICING DRAWINGS? As detailed as you’re Ready for Pricing Drawings are, they don’t paint the full picture for any subcontractor or supplier to send you back realistic hard quotes. In fact, without these Scopes of Work, most subcontractors or suppliers will quote you on their “assumptions” verses specific instruction of inclusions for products and services you actually want in your project. This is the only way to obtain consistent apples to apples quotations on your project. 38

MINT Westman

4. HAVE YOU ACQUIRED MULTIPLE FIRM, FIXED QUOTES FROM QUALIFIED SUBCONTRACTORS & SUPPLIERS ON EVERY PHASE OF YOUR PROJECT FOR EVERY DETAIL OF YOUR READY FOR PRICING DRAWINGS & SCOPES OF WORK? Have the subcontractors and suppliers you have received firm quotes from read, understood and included your entire project Scopes of Work details within their firm quote to you? You are investing a lot of your time & money into your project, and if you wait until construction starts to find out these answers, it’s probably already too late.

5. HAVE YOU MADE ALL YOUR PRODUCT & DECOR SELECTIONS? It’s so easy to be tempted to start your project without making ALL of your product, materials, fixtures and decor selections. Most of us tend to procrastinate at times, and this will be the time when you need to fight the temptations with all your might! To think you are able to start construction and retain control of your project without having made these decisions, will greatly increase the risk of you not reaching your project goals.

6. DO YOU HAVE AN ACCURATE AND FEASIBLE CONSTRUCTION SCHEDULE FOR YOUR PROJECT? Although a lot of the time it is very important to know when the project will start, it’s even more important to know when the project will be finished. Creating a solid construction schedule, for every team member involved in your project (subcontractor & supplier) to have input in and commit too, will greatly increase a successful and timely project outcome. It’s important to ask if your subcontractor or supplier is available for the timeline you have in mind before they start quoting your project, or else it may just be a waste of time.

Alair Homes 204.813.6953

These are just SOME of the very important steps to take prior to starting your project, and that’s why at Alair Homes, your project is so much more than a project to us, its about you! With Alair Homes your project outcome will be exceptional but more importantly will result in a life changing experience for you and your family! MINT Westman

Classic

Design Choices THAT STAND THE TEST OF TIME BY JT INTERIORS 40

MINT Westman

NATURAL ELEMENTS ARE A CLASSIC LOOK THAT FIT INTO EVERY STYLE. Copper and a mixture of metal, stone, concrete, granite or marble will enhance every dĂŠcor. Serene organic components such as house plants, monochromatic art accent this style without overpowering it. Reclaimed wood furniture, counters or accessories elevate your space and add character to your home. Matte black is making its way on the market from fixtures to hardware, they are both contemporary and timeless.

MIXING STYLES MAKE A BOLD STATEMENT. There is a shift in the design world towards adding a minimalist, functional design in every style. It is both calming and appeals to the “less is more” design principals. Traditional homes that were once layered with patterns and textures are being grouped with a mix of wood and metal elements to appeal to the more modern tastes. A properly designed kitchen, whether it is a modern farmhouse style or mid century modern it must have a place for everything and everything in its place. This lets you shift your attention to the things that bring you joy such as the entertainment center filled with wine from all over the world.

WAKE YOUR SENSES WITH THE RICH COLOR PALETTES. Keep the backdrop neutral and add a few key pieces that start to pull your style together. This year we are breathing life into our spaces with bold saturated colors such as indigo, navy and emerald green. If color scares you, soft pastels and botanical prints will add a pop of color to energize a neutral palette. Oversized geometric patterns and whimsical prints make a dramatic statement. Add LUXE to your decor with a wall of marble, copper, gold or pewter accents, velvet fabrics feel decadent and spoil your senses. Simply placing a bowl of fruit can energize a white kitchen.

LIGHT COLORED FLOORS ARE MAKING A COMEBACK. They tend to show less dirt than dark floor. Matte finishes create a warm and contemporary feel. Wider, longer planks make the room appear larger, more open and less cluttered. The pattern and texture will also help camouflage the everyday life mishaps that happens in our homes. Regardless of your budget or style the one thing you can do today to transform your space.... Declutter it. You will be amazed at the look and feel of a decluttered home. The mental energy spent trying to find an item or cleaning an over stuffed room exhausts you in many facets of your daily life. Follow the basic rules of three in each room: Make three piles. Keep it, Toss it, Donate/Sell it. Touch every item and ask yourself three questions: "Do I love it?", "Do I use it?" and "Do I need it?". If the answer is no to any or all of those questions it is time to let it go. If you don’t have the luxury of time to declutter then make it simple, get rid of three items a day. Start to focus on how it feels to live with less. Our home is a reflection of those that live within the walls If it's cluttered and disorganized it interferes with the serenity and the peacefulness of your home. Everyone starts in the same place during the design process, their home is not allowing them to live their best life. Whether they are drowning in clutter, or the interior is dated and tired, if it's holding you back it is time to make a change. The JT Interiors Design group can help you MAKE IT HOME.

FACILITATING FABULOUS Make Your Home Your Haven BY KYRA HOGGAN PHOTOS BY STUDIO 78

reating a safe space for you to create your perfect place – Jolene Toder’s job in a nutshell.

“People’s homes should be their sanctuary but, too often, living space becomes the object of stress, anxiety and upset,” said Toder, who has been helping homeowners turn their houses into havens for more than 20 years now through her company JT Interiors. “It can be anything from helping someone choose paint colours, organize, declutter … all the way up to helping them generate 3-D plans to construct a home from scratch.” She said she thinks things like Pinterest, HGTV, and DYI shows/magazines/websites have left many people feeling they should be able to do this work themselves … and then feeling inadequate, intimidated and overwhelmed when they run into barriers. “Most people know what they love and have a sense of what they want – just not how to bring it all together. And why should they know that, they have expertise at other things; their jobs, their families, etc. No one can be an expert in everything. “And that’s where I come in.” She said she has never, in 20 years, had two clients the same – the one commonality being that they want something more from their living space and could use a helping hand in creating it. “I had a client tell me she would love to entertain friends and family at her place, ‘But look at my house!’. I can help people figure out how they want to use their space, how they want to live in it. Right down to making laundry more functional.”

42

MINT Westman

She said she gets a lot of requests from blended families wanting to incorporate each other into their lives in inclusive, respectful and workable ways, but who are challenged to make it appealing for a variety of tastes, gender and ages. “You want them to feel loved and honoured coming into your home, not like they’re giving something up,” she said. “For me, it becomes breaking it down into the simplest approaches, function and goals, and choosing the best tools and methods to get you where you want to be.” She has everything from contractors to engineers to draftspeople ready to pitch in should the need arise, but is also happy to work with anyone you might prefer to do the job at hand. She also employs technology as an assist – doing most of her work online, through Skype, Facetime and other communication options that allow you to access her services from anywhere in the world – and while still in your pajamas. Renovations, remodelling, new-house design, interior design, staging houses for sale, or homes for living – she is, at heart, a facilitator, helping you achieve the space of your dreams without any nightmares along the way.

“I guess that’s the other thing all my clients can count on having in common – the process is all about you. How do you want to live, how do you want to spend time, what do you love? MAKE IT HOME. JT Interiors Elkhorn, MB 204.748.5422 joltod@hotmail.com

As the old saying goes, nothing is certain but death and taxes, and in that light, taxes don't seem that bad! While we can't help you eliminate your taxes, we can help you prepare for the other inevitable event in your life. No one likes to talk about death, let alone plan for it, because it is uncomfortable to think about one's own mortality. While we plan careers, vacations and retirement, many of us fail to plan one of the most important events in our family's lives. It is very easy to procrastinate such plans, but prearranging your funeral is the best way to ensure that decisions are well thought out - that nothing is overlooked. Your prearrangement really should be an important component of your overall estate planning process, along with other documents such as your will, and health care directive. At the time of a loved one's death there are over 75 decisions that have to be made with emotions running high and with a very limited amount of time to plan. Preplanning allows ample time to decide on important components of your wishes, and allows time to speak to your family members to ensure that your wishes line up with their needs as well. You

must never forget that the funeral /memorial service/ celebration of life, is for the living, your family and friends, and it is an important first step on their grief journey. It is amazing how many times we hear how relieved people are to have these decisions made, and the peace of mind it brings knowing they have made things just a little easier for their family. Not only can your wishes be clearly put on paper, but affordable options are available to prepay for your service. Again, the burden this removes from your family, knowing that everything is looked after, results in much less stress and allows your family to focus on what is most important, spending quality time together remembering the life of your loved one. Plans are available that are transferrable anywhere in the world, that are protected from estate taxes and creditors, and that grow tax free within the account. So we can help a little with your taxes after all! Brockie Donovan has served Brandon and area for 104 years and has been licensed to sell prearranged funeral services for over 50 years. We are the experts in preplanning, with a dedicated preplanning specialist on staff available to meet with you at our office or in the comfort of your home.

CARING FOR COMMUNITY: A Family Legacy BY KYRA HOGGAN

A lot of people assume that running a funeral home must be a depressing affair – but Wade and Kelly Lumbard both find it incredibly rewarding to be able to be there and help during people’s darkest hours.

The two say they’re also hugely gratified that their business allows them, not just to be a part of a community they love, but to actually give back to it. “We really enjoy being an active support to this community, which has been so good us – we’ve donated more than $100,000 in the past 10 years to various community organizations, and charities, community events and improvement initiatives, arts and sporting groups,” Kelly said. An example would be their non-denominational annual Tree of Memories Community Candlelight Memorial Service, in which they have hosted roughly 800 people per year for more than 20 years. “It is a special evening that allows members of our community to join together in remembering our loved ones who are no longer with us to celebrate the holidays,” Wade explained. “We prepare an ornament with the name of the person who has passed away, and give it to their loved ones to hang on a 12-foot Christmas tree before the service. They don’t have to be our clients – this is a community event we want to share with everyone who might benefit from it.” A fun family fundraiser called Gossip in the Graveyard brings in money for a different local organization every year (this year it will be Helping Hands). “We hire a local acting company who dress in period costumes and portray the stories of interesting local characters who are buried in the Brandon Cemetery,” said

Kelly. “The characters come alive during this two-hour, interactive walking tour to tell fascinating stories and tales of Brandon’s history.” The event sells out every year and has raised more than awareness – since its inception in 2007, it has brought in over $27,000 for local non-profits. Then we have the Brandon and Westman’s Caregiver Award to recognize those individuals who give so much to those around them, with the winners being nominated by community members and chosen by a committee. Perhaps most exciting of all is the Brockie Donovan Seniors Care Legacy Fund, created to celebrate the company’s 100th anniversary, and to thank city residents for their years of support. “It’s mandate is to assist and enhance the lives of Brandon’s senior citizens,” Wade said. “We started it with an initial donation of $50,000 to the fund and augment it by adding to the fund with every family we serve, so it keeps growing. We want to support programs that reflect our values and help us keep our community healthy and strong.” Small wonder, then, that last year their company received the Brandon Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Award and was a finalist for the Manitoba Chamber of Commerce Small Business Award. Spring is making it’s way into Westman, and with the change of seasons, comes a change of mindset. From morning coffees, to wine brunches, to quality time with the fam, Mint has you covered with these fabulous local picks.

1. How to deal with a case of the Mondays Making the most of your Monday morning coffee, is this cute, cheeky AF mug. Start the week off strong, and it’s the perfect transition mug to fill it with … well, probably gin. This and many other styles to suit your personality available at It’s Charlow, Darling!

2. What to drink It’s that time of year where a chilled white wine is more anticipated than a cozy glass of red. Maybe it’s the longer days, warmer weather, happier moods knowing that patio days aren’t too far off. This is a surprising wonderful mix of Reisling, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier. Who says women can never make up their minds. Delicious wellchilled on it’s own, or with the Springtime Hummus Bowl and Roasted Veggies.

3. What we love We ♥ how Loma Dry Shampoo makes those in between hair wash days, makes your hair look anything but that. It gives hair that 2nd day, lived in feel that we wish we could have every day. Absorbing the impurities, leaving you with an aroma of fresh pear. It’s perfect for busy moms, college students or people who hate washing their hair every day – and is available at Pantages.

4. What to experience There is no secret that showing gratitude is good for you. Life is far from perfect and instead of mentally replaying all of the problems and hiding under the covers, choosing to take control of our minds and focusing on the good, is a valuable investment in yourself. This is a chance to start any day without a heavy heart, appreciating and being in the present moment. What are you grateful for? Really. Right now?

5. Where to chill It’s family time, and now that the weather isn’t so dreadful, head on out for a night under the stars. Planets, stars, and galaxies can be viewed through a variety of telescopes on the observation deck. If the Cosmos has piqued your family’s interest, you need to add this outing to your family bucket list. Viewings are open to the public at the Brandon University Astronomical Observatory. Check out their website for a listing of events.

FINDING THE RIGHT FIT FOR FINANCIAL SECURITY BY PRAIRIE WEALTH PLANNING CONSULTANTS

We wake up each morning and make choices that affect how we’ll spend our day. And the small steps we take today can alter our pathway tomorrow. So how do we make sure those choices will lead us toward our lifestyle goals and create the lasting financial legacies we want? The answer is finding the right-fit advice, and to not go it alone. But how do you find the advice that’s right for you?

A FRESH NEW OPTION Prairie Wealth Planning Consultants is a boutique financial advisory firm that recently opened their doors in Brandon, and may be a fit for some. Prairie Wealth has developed and refined a process to help clients achieve their work-optional lifestyle and create lasting family legacies. Prairie Wealth’s team of in-house experts collaborate with other professionals and key strategic partners to deliver unbiased, independent advice. The firm also utilizes smart and innovative financial technology and marries it with personalized local expertise to make sense of it all. With financial services marketing coming from all directions, it’s understandable how people can become either overwhelmed or tune it out. A qualified financial advisor can act as a sounding board and provide clarity and perspective when needed. An independent advisor can do so without the agendas of big financial institutions.

56

MINT Westman

THE RIGHT CREDENTIALS When seeking advice, don’t be afraid to ask questions about qualifications. With a wide range of certifications in the financial services industry, people can be left with qualification-confusion. Professionals who hold the internationally recognized Certified Financial Planner - CFP® are held to some of the highest standards in the world. A qualified CFP® recognizes the value that comes from asking the right questions, genuinely listening to your responses and providing a guiding hand through all the challenges that life might throw your way. Other designations offer a degree of specialty as well. The Chartered Life Underwriter CLU® is an advanced tax & estate planning designation, Certified Health Insurance Specialist CHS™ holders specialize in health benefits, while the Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute FCSI® is one of the highest standards of investment stewardship. Above all, trust and integrity are paramount. Open communication must flow both ways between advisor and client to achieve a successful working relationship.

YOUR FINANCIAL ROAD MAP Before engaging the services of an advisor take the time to consider whether you have a very specific need, or whether you prefer to engage in a more holistic approach. Once your goals are clearly defined and communicated, a good advisor will help you create a clear road map. A great advisor will support you through those life events that bring you to an unexpected fork in the road.
