SUNWAY INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL: PREPARING STUDENTS FOR THE FUTURE

Sunway International School (SIS) first started in 2008 in Sunway City, Kuala Lumpur offering the Canadian (Ontario) Secondary School curriculum. In 2017, the school opened its second campus in Sunway Iskandar, Johor with the offering of both Canadian and International Baccalaureate curricula.

At the moment, SIS Sunway City sees around 800 students from Grades 6 to 12 in its current campus. In 2023, the school will also welcome Grade 1 to Grade 5 students at its new 8-acre campus.

Down in Johor, SIS Sunway Iskandar has grown quickly since its launch in 2017, from a modest start of about 150 students in its first intake to a peak enrolment of more than 550 students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12.

A diverse student body from more than 30 countries, highly-trained and qualified staff, and curricula that encompass both international and Canadian perspectives make Sunway International Schools truly international schools.

Both SIS campuses have always emphasised that success is not only reflected by what a student scores on a test, but also how well a student performs outside of formal assessments with skills such as the ability to collaborate in a group, being an effective communicator and being prepared for the future in ways that previous generations have not needed. It is the school’s mission as a school to equip students with what has become known as 21stcentury skills or soft skills. It is critical for all students to understand that learning is a continuous process and they need to be in a school and with teachers who encourage them to work towards improvement. The International Baccalaureate and Canadian philosophies to education are both known worldwide to be advanced and progressive curricula. As a school, SIS emphasises daily work, student ownership and responsibility, and a conscious move away from “all or nothing” final exams such as the traditional British system; we are proudly teachers, not lecturers.

Teachers use modern, dynamic teaching methods to help students take ownership of their own learning. The school aims to best prepare students to succeed for the rest of their lives by helping them develop into problem-solvers and self-motivated, principled individuals. Content is obviously important, but skills for a new generation are equally important. Students work with teachers to set self-determined learning goals which force students to take ownership of their improvement and learning.

In an era when many of the current students could be taking on jobs that currently do not even exist, the days of education being responsible for simply “training” students with content, facts and figures for their future profession no longer exist. The students that will be most prepared and successful will be those that are effective communicators, that are creative problem-solvers and those that bring unique perspectives to issues that they will be faced with.

It is excellent teachers, progressive curricula and an embracing school that develops the entire child that will be a key to this success and this is what SIS strives for each day.
