Minot, North Dakota, home to Minot Air Force Base (MAFB) is one of the three communities recognized as a 2025 Great American Defense Community
The Association of Defense Communities (ADC) announced the three selected communities at the Defense Communities National Summit earlier this month of which Minot was recognized for support of Minot Air Force Base The two other communities recognized this year are Greater Buckley Region in Colorado for their support of Buckley Space Force Base and Yuma, Arizona for their support of Marine Corps Air Station.
“We’re excited to welcome Minot, North Dakota as a 2025 Great American Defense community,” said ADC President Karen Holt. “We are especially honored to recognize Minot’s unwavering commitment in educating stakeholders on nuclear deterrence and national security.” The Great American Defense Communities program was launched by ADC in 2016 to recognize and celebrate the communities and regions that support military installations for their exceptional commitment to improving quality of life for military.
“North Dakota is committed to being the most military-friendly state in the nation, and this recognition of Minot as a Great American Defense Community is proof of that commitment,” Gov. Kelly Armstrong said. “The dedicated airmen of the 91st Missile Wing and 5th Bomb Wing, along with the support personnel from the North Dakota Air National Guard’s 219th Security Forces Squadron, play a crucial role in safeguarding our nation and are an incredibly important part of the Minot community "
Minot will be spotlighted by ADC throughout the year with plans for leadership from the association to travel to North Dakota and celebrate with the community this summer Then Minot will be featured at the ADC Innovation Forum in Monterey, California at the end of October
"Minot has always been a proud military community, and being named a Great American Defense Community is a testament to the deep connection between the Minot area and Minot Air Force Base This recognition highlights what we in Minot have always known—our community and the base share an unbreakable bond,” said Ryan Ackerman, Minot Area Chamber EDC Board Chair. “We are honored to support them in every way possible."
"Minot Air Force Base is not just a military installation it’s a driving force in our community,” expressed Pete Hankla, Task Force 21 Chair. “With a $651 million economic impact, its presence strengthens our local businesses, schools, and workforce, while its mission strengthens our national security. This recognition as a Great American Defense Community is proof of that commitment."
Communities are chosen through a competitive nomination process based on community building efforts, such as educational and employment opportunities, and support and collaboration with neighboring military installations In ten years, 50 communities have been selected as Great American Defense Communities across all branches of military To learn more about ADC, visit defensecommunities org

Minot Area Chamber EDC (MACEDC) is excited to announce the winners of the National Civics Bee ® Local Competition This was the only local competition in the state of North Dakota, and 20 middle school students from across western North Dakota showed their skills at the Aleshire Theater inside Minot State University's Hartnett Hall on April 11 to see who would move on to the state competition, and ultimately nationals
The National Civics Bee® is an initiative aimed at encouraging more young Americans to engage in civics and contribute to their communities. This competition’s goal is to inspire students to become better informed about American democracy, to engage respectfully and constructively in the community, and to build greater trust in others and institutions. MACEDC was proud to see so many students exploring ways that they can learn about civics, apply their ideas, and encourage growth in their local areas
Middle school students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade from public, private, charter, and home schools across the state were invited to take part in the firstround civics essay competition, where they submitted a 750-word essay on their ideas for improving their community. Submissions for the first round were collected over late 2024 and early 2025, where a distinguished panel of judges then reviewed the essays, and the top 20 students were selected to advance.
The local competition was an in-person, live event that included two rounds of civics questions, followed by a Q&A round featuring MACEDC President | CEO Brekka Kramer, Ward County Commissioner Jason Olson, and Minot City Council President Lisa Olson as judges to test the students’ knowledge of civics
Everyone in attendance was encouraged to put their skills to the test, as an online link was made available so the audience could play along and test their own civics wisdom The competition was close, with all the students absolutely blowing away the judges and audience with their knowledge, but those who took the top three spots were: 1st Place – Clara Zheng from Erik Ramstad Middle School in Minot, 2nd Place – Ayden Heilman from Central Middle School in Minot, and 3rd Place –
MacKayla Crosland from Williston Middle School Central Campus in Williston.

The State Board of Higher Education (SBHE) selected Brent Sanford to serve as the interim chancellor of the North Dakota University System (NDUS) during today’s special board meeting Chancellor Mark Hagerott announced his retirement effective April 29, 2025, at an SBHE meeting last Friday. Sanford, former North Dakota lieutenant governor, has been serving as interim president at Bismarck State College (BSC) since January 9, 2025. At the same meeting, the SBHE also named Dr. Dan Leingang to fill the interim president position at BSC.
The State Board of Higher Education (SBHE) selected Brent Sanford to serve as the interim chancellor of the North Dakota University System (NDUS) during today’s special board meeting Chancellor Mark Hagerott announced his retirement effective April 29, 2025, at an SBHE meeting last Friday Sanford, former North Dakota lieutenant governor, has been serving as interim president at Bismarck State College (BSC) since January 9, 2025 At the same meeting, the SBHE also named Dr Dan Leingang to fill the interim president position at BSC
SBHE Chair Tim Mihalick said, “I thank Mark for his service to the state’s higher education system over the past decade, and I welcome Brent for stepping up not once, but twice in a few short months to serve where he was needed in the system. Our highest priority is our students and building collaborative partnerships with the state’s workforce to meet their needs. Brent will lead systemwide collaboration among our campuses and he has the leadership experience in business and state government to ensure that connection remains strong between the system and community needs.”
Sanford will start his new role as chancellor effective April 30, 2025.
Sanford said, “I appreciate the opportunity to serve in a leadership role that includes all of the state’s higher education campuses I am ready for this challenge I look forward to leading collaboration of campuses on systemwide efforts and responding at speed and scale to workforce challenges I am confident that the North Dakota University System can become the number one workforce solution for North Dakota and our region ”
Sanford graduated from the University of North Dakota (UND) with a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1994 He worked as a CPA for Eide Bailly from 1994 through 2002 and then became the chief financial officer of Transwest, Inc. in Colorado. He moved back to Watford City, N.D., in 2004, purchasing his family-run car dealership. He was elected to the Watford City Council in 2006 and was elected mayor in 2010. Sanford served as lieutenant governor for the first six years of former Gov. Doug Burgum’s two-term tenure. Sanford was named Interim President of Bismarck State College in January 2025.
New data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) shows that North Dakota’s arts and cultural sector is a powerful economic driver, contributing $1 765 billion to the state’s economy in 2023 Representing 2 32% of the state’s total GDP, arts and cultural industries also supported 14,852 jobs and provided nearly $903 million in compensation
The new figures, released as part of the 2023 Arts and Cultural Production Satellite Account (ACPSA), show North Dakota's GDP growth was at 3% while the state’s Arts and Culture Value Added increased by over 10% from 2022 to 2023. The sector ranked 7th among North Dakota’s top value-added industries, surpassing education services and coming in just behind utilities. This ranking highlights the arts as a significant economic force, on par with major industries like mining, agriculture, and transportation.
Although North Dakota ranked 48th among all states in ACPSA compensation, it was 27th in compensation growth, adding nearly 1,900 new jobs in the sector in 2023 Since 2022, ACPSA compensation has grown 4 percent in North Dakota, compared with an increase of 3 6 percent for the United States This aligns with national trends showing that the arts economy outpaced overall economic growth
On a national scale, arts and cultural industries contributed $1 2 trillion to the U S economy in 2023, accounting for 4 2% of GDP The sector grew at more than twice the rate of the total economy, with the U S maintaining a trade surplus of nearly $37 billion in arts-related exports.
"These new numbers reinforce what we’ve long known: arts and culture are vital to North Dakota’s economy," said Jessica Christy, Executive Director of North Dakota Council on the Arts (NDCA). "Not only do the arts enhance the quality of life for North Dakotans, but they also create jobs, generate revenue, and contribute to the economic well-being of communities across our state."
The Arts & Economic Prosperity 6 (AEP6) study, conducted in 2022, further underscores the financial strength of North Dakota’s nonprofit arts sector, with additional data showing that arts and culture drive local economies while fostering social and educational benefits For example, a couple of the key findings from the North Dakota study include: attendees spend $32 50 per person per event, beyond the cost of admission; and 90 9% of arts and culture attendees agree that the activity or venue where they were surveyed "is inspiring a sense of pride in this neighborhood or community ”

Minot State University professional communication students were honored at the 2025 Eric Sevareid Awards, earning first place and an Award of Merit in student market television categories
Each year, the Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association (MBJA) presents awards for the best work done by broadcast news operations and journalists working in small, medium, and large markets in their six-state region on radio, television, and online.
The MSU Inside/Out program, produced by the COMM 475 class during the Fall 2024 semester, received an Award of Merit in the Cable Newscast Student Market Television category for the episode titled “Senior MSU Football Captain Emmett Espino & Art Professor Ryan Stander | MSU Inside Out | Fall24 Ep9 ”
Owen Patterson, a sophomore professional communication major from Washburn, earned first place in the Sports Play-by-Play Student Market Television category for his broadcast of the October 19, 2024, matchup, “High School Girls Basketball: Minot vs. West Fargo-Horace.”
“The award is a nice honor to earn early in my career and is something to build on in the future,” said Patterson. “The broadcast department at Minot State has been a huge help in starting my career in play-by-play The program offers plenty of reps for our students and pushes them to do better and better with each opportunity ”
“Owen Patterson is so deserving of this award,” said Neil Roberts, associate professor of professional communication “He works hard and has such a high ceiling of talent at the same time. He gets better every game, is already the best across the region, and is only a sophomore."
Three students Clayton Hawkins, senior; Dalton Davis, junior; and Noah Fredrickson, junior went to Minneapolis for the Midwest Journalism Conference, where the awards were announced during the MBJA banquet on Saturday, April 12
Derek Olson and Roberts, faculty in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts, also attended the conference.
“I am so proud of our students!” Roberts said. “They competed against universities across a six-state area North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Nebraska to be eligible So, competing against the likes of the University of Nebraska, University of Wisconsin, University of Minnesota, University of Iowa, Iowa State, the University of South Dakota, South Dakota State, North Dakota State, the University of North Dakota, Marquette and others, there is stiff competition against much larger departments for campus shows ”
As a highlight of the weekend, students received press credentials through KMSU-19 and were treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the broadcast facilities at Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins, ahead of Friday night’s game.
