COOKIE

For many people, the holiday season means family, friends, and of course- delicious food! Holiday baking is often a staple of family gatherings during this time of the year, but many military personnel on Minot Air Force Base (AFB) are away from home and missing out on sharing their favorite holiday treats with loved ones.

Minot Area Chamber EDC was thrilled to help spread cheer to the airmen and families on Minot AFB with the annual Team Minot Cookie Drive. Keli RosselliSullivan, Workforce Development | Military Liaison is excited for this annual collection of cookies event “It feels good to be able to give back to our airmen We want them to know our community cares Team Minot is part of our community, and that’s one of many ways that we show our appreciation to them,” said RosselliSullivan

The collected cookies were distributed to first term airmen between the ages of 18-20 who live in the dorms at Minot AFB. These personnel are required to live in the dorms, and it could be the first time they have been away from family for the holidays. Baking cookies is just one small way the Minot area can show its appreciation to the men and women serving our country.

“While the act of delivering a cookie may seem like a small gesture, it’s the love and appreciation that comes with that cookie that warms the entire base this holiday season Many thanks to our community volunteers, military spouses and First Sergeants for making this holiday magic happen,” said 5th Bomb Wing Commander Col Jesse Lamarand

DRIVE

Additionally, the baked goods were brought to the airmen stationed at 91st Missile Wing Missile Alert Facilities across western North Dakota Airmen deploy for a week at a time to keep minuteman missiles on alert and defend the nation with a combat-ready nuclear force.

“This is not normal. Cookies from our community is above and beyond a level of Magic City support that is not seen at any other installation. It’s a wonderful gesture. This beautiful Minot tradition is a perfect reminder of how lucky we are to be serving our nation in such a special place,” said 91st Missile Wing Commander Col Jimmy Schlabach

“Minot Air Force Base is such a crucial part of our community,” said Cassidy Hjelmstad, Minot Area Chamber EDC 2024 Board Chair “They’re our friends and neighbors, and many of them are thousands of miles away from home It’s important that we continue to be welcoming and exemplify the true magic of the Minot area, and what better time to do so than during the holidays. We want them to know that we’re thankful for everything that they do, and we’re glad to have them here.”

Together, we delivered 15,000 cookies to dorms, missile alert facilities, and locations around base, spreading holiday cheer one cookie at a time

We’d like to extend a huge THANK YOU to the incredible Minot area community, the MAFB Spouses group, our amazing volunteers, and the countless bakers who made this year’s Team Minot Cookie Drive such a success! Your generosity and spirit remind us what this community is all about

It's probably fair to say that no one in the late 1990s and early 2000s imagined the long-term impact of attracting and securing multiple in-bound call centers to the city of Minot, and MACEDC has been supporting their growth every step of the way.

One of those call centers, Delta Vacations, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Delta Air Lines, and is a tour operator offering one-stop-shopping for vacation planning, offering full vacation packages to popular vacation destinations. Delta Vacations opened as MLT Vacations in 2000 and is set to celebrate 25 years of providing vacation packages, based out of their north Minot facility, in January 2025

A second call-in center that was attracted to Minot through economic development and MAGIC Fund efforts in the mid-1990s was ING/Cognizant Located on North Hill, at 2000 21st Ave NW, the more than 110,000 square-foot building employed more than 1,000 people for years. At above-average wages, this opportunity brought individuals and families to the region for long-term work.

Fast forward more than twenty-five years after coming to The Magic City, with today's environment of remote work options, there was no longer a need for Cognizant to own such a large building Owners of the property reached out to local realtor, Minot Public School Board member, and ND State Legislator Scott Louser, who helped facilitate a community-changing gift

"We worked with them for months to help find the right non-profit or government entity that would benefit from such a large and unique building," said Louser. "And ultimately, getting them to "sell" it to the Minot Public Schools in mid-2020 for $10 became a true win-win situation for the community."

At the ribbon-cutting in fall 2024 for the new Minot North High School. former superintendent Mark Vollmer shared the following, regarding the generous gift made possible through Cognizant and economic development efforts

“When we started this discussion, we said it was about our kids This is not about our past This is about our future This is our future,” Vollmer said “This is a unique building It was staffed by nearly 1,200 employees. They came to the table, and they wanted to do something for our community. They could have sold this property. They could have leveled this property and subdivided it into lots. But instead, working with Mr. Louser, they agreed to give this property to the citizens of Minot, the students of Minot for their education in making a second high school. That is something to celebrate.”

RETURNHOMEFORTHEHOLIDAYS

With the holiday season coming to a close, we are thrilled to announce that this year's Home for the Holidays program sent 138 airmen to visit their families between Thanksgiving and the new year.

Minot Area Chamber EDC is proud to administer the program in partnership with Minot Air Force Base to purchase airline tickets to send first-term airmen home for the holidays This is the second year the program has been in place

We were ecstatic to help so many people, and it wouldn’t have been possible without all the community support from individuals and businesses in the Minot area We’d like to give a shoutout to Minot Mayor Tom Ross and Magic City Beverage/Anheuser Bush who led an initiative for additional funds, and to Preferred Travel for taking care of the logistics when booking so many trips.

Enjoy a couple of stories from who were able to travel home because of your generosity and support.

Operation Home for the Holidays was a blessing for me Being away from home is hard, but being away during the holidays feels even harder I was able to spend Christmas with family this year after not being able to be home for almost 3 years. My mom who I haven’t seen in two years was in tears when she picked me up at the airport, she is thankful for the opportunity I received of being able to go home for the holidays.

My mom even flew my grandpa from Mexico to Texas so that he can also spend Christmas with us. My grandfather is getting older and is having health problems so being able to see him during the holidays was extra special and heart-warming For Christmas we got to celebrate a traditional Mexican Christmas which usually starts on the 24th and carries out till the 25th We did some Caroling, opened gifts, and of course ate some good tamales

Flights are so expensive, and they are even more expensive during the holidays season, I’m grateful for each person who gave me the opportunity to be able to spend the holidays with family back at home. I want to take the time to thank Minot’s Mayor Tom Ross, the Minot Area Chamber EDC, Preferred Travel, & the local community for making my holidays extra special and for giving me the opportunity to be able to see loved ones

CarterHarris

The Minot Home for the Holidays program was an incredible gift for me. Using it, I was able to return to my hometown in Caledonia, Michigan and see my family for Christmas and the New Year. Some of my older relatives, namely my grandfather on my mom's side and grandmother on my dad's side, have been in declining health, and this trip ensured I was at least able to see them for one more Christmas. Also, my sister is in the Army National Guard, and I was able to congratulate her on her promotion to Sergeant in person Finally, all the friends, past coworkers, and professors that helped get me to where I am today were overjoyed to see me again I would once again like to thank Minot’s Mayor Tom Ross, the Minot Area Chamber EDC, Preferred Travel, and the local community for making this possible I would also like to give a special shoutout to Maria Calhoun for taking my name and submitting me to the program.

MercadoNayeli

I would like to thank the Home for Holidays Program, Mayor Tom Ross, the Minot Area Chamber EDC, Preferred Travel and everyone in the local community who may have contributed for giving me the opportunity to see my family this November I hadn’t been home since March of this year I wasn’t planning on going home this year for the holidays I was out in the missile field for Thanksgiving, and I’m out here again on Christmas day as I’m typing this For my job we live out here on site for a week at a time

I flew home to NM the week before Thanksgiving and went back into the field when I got back. The day I flew back home was my mother’s birthday so that was a nice gift for her. I was able to see my father and his wife. I also got to see my Grandparents who aren’t doing so well physically and mentally, especially my grandpa. I got to see my Godmother who has also seemed to decline cognitively since I’ve been home I also got to see her daughter who is my cousin I was able to play pool and bond with my father, as well has help him unload a large amount of pellets from his truck He’s capable but he is getting older and has had back problems most of his life, so I was glad I was there to help with that

I got to lose money at the casino with my mom, she wanted to go for her birthday. My mom has been suffering from Vertigo since March from when she flew my kids back to ID for me when we were all there visiting and I had to fly back here early for work. I helped her put together a small trampoline that her therapist recommended she get to help with her treatment. I helped my Grandparents put up their Christmas lights and ornaments on their tree. Watched Christmas movies with my mom and had a small Thanksgiving dinner Besides that, I just hung out and relaxed

JusteneRichards

The Home for the Holidays Program was an incredible opportunity that made my holiday season truly special. I have been away from my daughter for the past eight months, and this trip allowed me to reunite with her and bring her back with me. I was also able to host Christmas with my parents at their home and have the entire family together to celebrate.

This experience gave me the chance to create precious memories with my loved ones that I’ll cherish forever None of this would have been possible without the generosity of Minot’s Mayor Tom Ross, the Chamber of Commerce, Preferred Travel, and the local community I am deeply grateful for their kindness and support, which brought so much joy to my family and me this holiday season

Thank you again for sending me home I’m glad I was able to go because I wasn’t planning to, and everyone is getting older and don’t want any regrets not seeing them I hope everyone had great holidays and Happy New Year to all!

AimeeRamseur

I cannot express enough how thankful I am of Minot’s local community. Since arriving to Minot, ND on 18 November 2023, I hadn’t been to my hometown in a little over a year. All thoughts of visiting home were dismissed as I was unsure how I’d be able to afford and make time for it Thanks to you all, along with my incredible leadership I was able to spend an amazing 3 weeks with my #1 support system! I am truly grateful that I was granted this opportunity What you guys are doing is very much appreciated, and all the greatness you are sharing to us will definitely come around back to you I will only wish you all the best and send you all my love!! Have a great New Year, I hope 2025 treats you wonderfully

NINEGROCERYSTORESINMINOTREGION

INTERESTEDINCOLLABORATING

A feasibility study led by the N.D. Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives rural development services center, in partnership with the Minot Area Chamber EDC and other supportive organizations, has found interest from nine grocery stores in the Minot region to collaborate on a shared services cooperative or redistribution hub. This initiative aims to reduce wholesale costs through joint purchasing and provide local producers access to broader markets Challenges like maintaining affordable, high-quality food access in rural communities are driving this effort, which could have significant economic benefits for small towns, farms, and ranches in the region However, additional participation from local food producers will be needed to establish a viable local food hub

Next steps include convening interested store owners to evaluate the benefits, costs, and business models for collaboration, while subcommittees of growers and processors will explore successful food hub models elsewhere. A similar initiative in northeast North Dakota, the Rural Access Distribution Cooperative, has already demonstrated success in improving pricing and profitability for small-town stores. NDAREC is serving as an advocate, facilitator, and fundraiser, inviting stakeholders to shape a sustainable solution for grocery access and local food sales in rural communities. For details, contact the NDAREC at 701-663-6501 or the Minot Area Chamber EDC at 701-852-6000.

LOCALDONATIONHELPSKEEPKIDS WARMTHISWINTER

This winter, many local children have been braving the cold without adequate clothing to keep warm. In response to this urgent need, Aspire Credit Union is proud to share a $1,200 donation to the Minot Public School Foundation (MPSF) of thermal gloves, knit hats, jackets, and snowpants. The donation is aimed at ensuring that no child in the community has to face the elements without the proper winter protection

As temperatures plummeted this winter, the School Foundation received numerous reports from counselors, teachers and staff about children requiring winter gear to wear during outdoor activities and their commute to and from school “We’re thrilled to partner with the MPSF to ensure that every child has the clothing they need to stay warm and comfortable this winter,” said Rianne Kuhn, Marketing Communications Coordinator at Aspire Credit Union. “We know that winter can be particularly harsh for families facing economic hardships, and we’re proud to be a part of making sure these kids can focus on their education without worrying about being cold.”

The items donated include a variety of high-quality items in various sizes to accommodate children of many ages. The MPSF has already begun distributing the gear to students in need, and plans to continue ensuring that all students have access to the essentials. “The MPSF is thankful for Aspire Credit Union's continued support, this time through their generous donation towards our Winter Gear drive”, shared Jamie Swensen, Executive Director of the MPSF “This thoughtful gift will have an immediate impact for our students who are in need of warm winter clothes When students have the proper winter gear for our climate, the distraction and discomfort of not having what they need is gone and the students can focus on their learning Thank you Aspire Credit Union for helping the MPSF support our students ”

This donation highlights the power of community support and the importance of coming together to ensure that all children have the opportunity to thrive in the classroom and beyond. The MPSF continues to welcome additional contributions from local businesses and community members to further support the needs of our local children.
