MINOTSTATENURSINGPRESENTSAT LEGISLATIVESHOWCASE

The Minot State University Department of Nursing proudly participated in the North Dakota University System Legislative Showcase held in Memorial Hall at the North Dakota State Capitol Tuesday, Jan. 21.

MSU nursing students and professors joined Minot State marketing and university communications at the bi-annual event, visiting with legislators and other guests at the Capitol about news and initiatives within the University and nursing department

This North Dakota Legislative Assembly takes place every two years This year's session began on Jan 6 and will run through April The assembly brings together the North Dakota House of Representatives and Senate to convene and vote on proposed bills that shape the state’s future policies. During the session, the Legislative Showcase serves as an opportunity for institutions within the North Dakota University System (NDUS) to highlight their programs and achievements. This year’s theme focused on healthcare.

Representing Minot State University Department of Nursing were Chair Amy Lee and Professor Richelle Johnson, students Hannah Hagen, April Lawrence, Raygen Lee, Emma Cornejo, along with MSU Marketing Director Cole Krueger, and Director of University Communications Michael Linnell

The students engaged with state officials, offering firsthand insight into nursing education and its importance of investing in the next generation of healthcare professionals. “This event is a great opportunity to showcase hardworking students in our thriving nursing program,” Krueger explained.

The showcase provided students with a platform to share their personal experiences in the program and advocate for the importance of nursing in healthcare

“Being allowed the opportunity to express the importance of nursing in health care to public officials was such a rewarding experience,” said Hagen “The stories we shared were valued, and as a nursing student — I felt seen and heard "

“Getting the opportunity to talk to elected officials about the importance of nursing education and to tell them about how we are given amazing opportunities to learn from some of the best nurses around was very gratifying,” Lawrence added. “There were so many supporters of nursing in the House and Senate. It really gave us the opportunity to share our love of nursing with those outside the healthcare field.”

The event featured displays and individuals from all 11 NDUS campuses, the state’s Medical School at the University of North Dakota, and the North Dakota University System office Minot State featured two advanced simulation units infant and toddler simulation manikins and discussed key points, including their experience at Minot State, work with various simulators in the department, and new guaranteed admission agreements with Dakota College at Bottineau and Lake Region State College.

By attending this event, Minot State University aimed to bridge the gap between policymakers and educators, ensuring that the state’s leaders understand the vital role nursing plays in community health and well-being

CHAMPAGNEANDICEGALAFEBRUARY15

Last year, the Northern Plains Children’s Advocacy Center (NPCAC) helped more than 600 children and their families navigate the most difficult moments of their lives. All of those services were provided free of charge because of the support of the annual Champagne and Ice Gala

This year’s Champagne and Ice Gala will be held on Saturday, February 15, at 6 pm in the Clarion Hotel Tickets for this 15th annual event are available at npcacgala cbo io

The NPCAC provides a compassionate and effective way to serve children victimized by sexual abuse and other crimes Families that come to NPCAC are never charged for services Funding for NPCAC comes from grants and community donations, so events like this are vital in continuing to serve children and families

“Centers like this significantly reduce the trauma associated with child abuse and assists in holding offenders accountable,” said Christal Halseth, NPCAC Executive Director. “This gala has grown into our most valuable source of funding.”

This year’s keynote speaker is Photojournalist Amanda Mustard, who turns her investigative lens on sexual abuse committed by her grandfather, beginning a personal journey in pursuit of the truth and reconciliation for her family.

An online auction will begin on February 8, concluding on February 15 at 8:15 pm The auction will include baskets donated by area businesses, an autographed Shaquille O’Neal jersey, a Justin Jefferson autographed full-size Minnesota Vikings helmet and guitars autographed by Kelsea Ballerini and Bailey Zimmerman The bidding site is located on our Champagne & Ice page at https://npcac cbo io

The gala will begin with a cocktail hour with hors d'oeuvres Mustard will present before the live auction Emmy Award nominee Mustard created the documentary Great Photo, Lovely Life from revealing interviews, archival photographs and intimate home movies that unravel a world of secrets while illustrating Mustard's efforts to disrupt the cycle of intergenerational trauma and empower the survivors to move forward.

“The first step is talking about it. And that’s all I want. If you take one thing away from this film, it’s the value of just saying these things takes the power away from them. And there are so many people isolated and suffering in silence,” Mustard said.

Tickets are $50/person; guests must be 21 or older to attend. Gatsby themed attire is encouraged and there will even be a best dressed contest! Raffle tickets are available for a Halo Diamond pendant and stone hoop earrings set valued at more than $11,000 Tickets are $20 each and available through any NPCAC staff or board member

“The Northern Plains Children’s Advocacy Center brings together a heroic team to fight for the most severe child abuse victims in our region while restoring hope and helping them focus on what really matters being a kid,” Halseth said “We work very closely with all levels of law enforcement, child protective services and prosecution ”

Be sure to check out the NPCAC’s Facebook page for gala updates. Please call 701-852-0836 or email christal@northernplainscac.org for raffle ticket information.

“North Dakota Housing Finance Agency offers affordable financing options, including government-backed loans, that allow individuals and families with modest incomes to purchase a home with as little as $500 down,” said Dave Flohr, the agency’s executive director. “In addition to being cost-effective, our homeownership programs are serviced locally, ensuring our borrowers have direct access to a real person whenever they have questions or need assistance."

Loan guarantees provided by HUD reimburse lenders for their loss in the event that a homeowner defaults. Of the nearly 13,500 loans NDHFA currently services, 42 percent are FHA guaranteed. Loan servicers receive quarterly scores that are averaged to produce a final fiscal year-end score NDHFA’s FY2024 score is 94 15 percent, up from 93 53 the previous year The agency was one of 87 loan servicers ranked as Tier 1 for FY2024 There were 495 FHA servicers nationwide

The ranking system measures FHA servicer compliance with guidelines and intervention requirements, loss mitigation engagement, and reporting The intention of the ranking is to protect borrowers and alert HUD to potential problems A high work-out ratio shows a servicer’s effectiveness in working with delinquent borrowers to keep them out of foreclosure The National Servicing Center has ranked NDHFA a Tier 1 servicer for seven years running.

ACCREDITATIONPROCESSREAFFIRMSMINOT

One key component reaffirming this is a current National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) passing rate of 100% in 2023. Part of the MSU Department of Nursing’s commitment to excellence is having a complex, accredited program designed for nursing success, and the department is busy working through renewing its accreditation this year

Amy Lee, chair of the department of nursing, expressed her pride in the program and its mission “It is a time for our program to shine and really be proud of the work we are doing, the nurses that we are creating, and the environment we create so that students can succeed and be great nurses,” Lee said. “Nursing is something you must have a passion for.”

MSU nursing is accredited not only regionally in North Dakota but also nationally. According to Lee, regional and national accreditation is essential for students, not only to show the program is teaching at the highest standards but to help students move on in their academic careers “Not only is CCNE accreditation a mark of quality for our program, graduating from a nursing program that is nationally accredited is usually a requirement if students wish to pursue a graduate degree in the nursing field,” she added

Ensuring that the program meets every requirement can be a daunting task and challenging to prove despite knowing that it is embedded into the program, it is all a collaborative effort between faculty, staff, and students to prove.

“It is such a big task; we must show how our program and curriculum show not only the standard but also the concepts and the essentials of preparing new nurses for the environment,” Lee said. “Achieving and maintaining CCNE accreditation involves an in-depth, ongoing evaluation by our faculty, examining everything from curriculum and clinical experiences to faculty credentials, student support, and outcome measures

“This year, we are also incorporating the updated 2024 standards and the new Essentials from 2021, which define the core curriculum and expected competencies for baccalaureate nursing graduates ”

“We need to show that our students are demonstrating and showing us that they can meet these competencies,” she said. “That our student can not only understand it but apply it and think critically to care for patients.”

Lee referenced multiple areas on Minot State’s website and national websites to help individuals further understand what accreditation looks like and how it is measured.

CONTEMPORARYWORKSONPAPERAT MINOTSTATEUNIVERSITY

“INT’L Paperworks 2025” is the 53rd annual juried art competition sponsored by the Northwest Arts Center The program was founded to enhance the visual arts experiences of students, the campus and the regional art community and to build a teaching fine art collection. The exhibitions attract excellence in contemporary art each year.

Featuring 39 artworks by 32 artists from around the US, artworks on or constructed of paper are the focus for the show. In addition to paintings, prints, photography, and drawings, the exhibit contains several pieces incorporating handmade and cut paper techniques.

Juror for 2025 is Michael Reedy, artist and Professor at Eastern Michigan University’s School of Art and Design His work has been included in over 250 national and international exhibitions and featured in over 40 books and journals including Hi-Fructose, Juxtapoze, Spectrum, and Fresh Paint Reedy was also recently featured in Create Magazine, Creative Quarterly, The Moleskine Project Vol 2 (Spoke Art), and Manifest Gallery’s 15th International Drawing Annual

In “Extraordinarily Ordinary,” Reedy explores anatomical illustration as reminders of the physical nature of our existence, its vulnerability and mortality Drawing on the history of medical illustration to convey moral lessons as well as inform and amaze, his goal is to reorient sterile modern medical imaging within this framework of Memento mori to serve as reminders and warnings of death. The resulting drawings also incorporate antagonistic cherubs, apocalyptic hordes, floating brains and more in geometric alien landscapes, cascading vortexes and hypno-spirals.

“My hope is to transport the viewer to another plane and space infused with a sense of scientific aura, moral lesson, and morbid entertainment,” states Reedy. “This point-of tension between hope and despair, humor and pain, and living and dying is infinitely interesting to me – and represents my mindset every time I look in the mirror and see another grey hair ”
