RELOCATION

some of the questions that can arise, often at the most inconvenient times, when trying to put down roots in a new home

At the Minot Area Chamber EDC (MACEDC), we often meet people who are moving to the Magic City (nicknamed due to the way it seemingly sprung up “like magic” during the railroad boom of the late 1800s) from around the world. Minot Air Force Base is the only base that hosts 2 legs of the nuclear triad, which brings military personnel from all over, whether it’s their first base right out of tech school or coming back stateside from an overseas location

Minot State University is one of the most affordable universities in the country, including being ranked as the “fifth most affordable online college for 2024 by College Consensus, an online resource with over four million visitors in 2023” Having a low-cost option for getting a quality degree in higher education is extremely important for students, and MSU recruits students from all over the world.

In addition to the University and Air Force Base, the Minot area also offers a wide variety of unique competitive advantages for primary sector businesses, especially in the following industries: agriculture, energy, UAS, and distribution. Minot has proven to be the location of choice for local & global businesses, providing superior infrastructure, a quality educated and skilled workforce, local incentives, and the largest city-served industrial park between Seattle and Chicago! The Logistics Park of North Dakota is a

Minot area for such a wide variety of reasons, we saw a need to have these basic questions answered, and knew it was imperative to provide a resource that offered the answers in an easy to find location that was packaged together as a one-stopshop for any questions that might arise.

“We have so many incredible member investors that provide imperative services to the Minot Area,” said Brekka Kramer, MACEDC President | CEO. “We wanted to find a way to not only offer a resource to that would answer so many frequently asked questions, but also highlight our partners that serve a need while giving them recognition for all their hard work that sometimes gets lost when focusing on the other great resources and happenings in the Minot area ”

GUIDE

“Our WayFinders Program is already an incredible resource for helping to find clubs, groups, volunteer opportunities, and a community of people that share interests,” discussed Keli Rosselli-Sullivan, MACEDC Workforce Development Specialist | Military Liaison

“Since we already had a support system for helping people find something to do, we wanted to make sure we could also offer our new friends and neighbors as much as possible to help them get settled in so they can stop worrying about the basics and dive in to embrace the new chapter in their lives.”

The new Relocation Guide is available online now on the Minot Area Chamber EDC website here. This is a free resource that we encourage all of our partners to share with any friends, family, or employees who have recently moved in, about to join us, or thinking about relocating to the Magic City

In addition, the WayFinders program is an awesome way

BUILDINGCONNECTIONSANDGETTING INSPIREDATMINOTWOMENCONNECT OPPORTUNITYSHOWCASE

On May 9th, Minot Women Connect hosted an awesome Opportunity Showcase at the Barn at 52 Pines in Burlington with a wide variety of great local volunteering organizations and an amazing panel with rockstars from our community

The event was a chance to build connections while discovering new ways to get involved in the Minot Area

After the crowd of nearly 100 people took their seats, they were treated to an inspiring panel moderated by Jessica Ackerman, featuring special guests Teresa Loftesnes, Barb Solberg, Kit Christensen, and Macy Bolinske. The panelists spoke about how they got involved with an assortment of organizations, and the ways that they've managed to stay active in the community throughout the various seasons of life while balancing work, family, and health.

Following the panel was a networking opportunity with refreshments where attendees had the chance to mingle with other guests and panelists Plus, they had the chance to speak with the 19 attending organizations about volunteer options and ways to get involved, which included our information on Junior Achievement and the various committees available through the Minot Area Chamber EDC! If you'd like to learn more about what we have to offer, send carla@minotchamberedc com an email

Thank you so much to the Women Connect committee for putting on such a great event and to everyone that attended. We already can't wait for the next Women Connect Signature Event in the fall!

“The Minot Area Chamber EDC is proud to host an event that helps bring understanding about one of our most important industries to individuals who might otherwise not experience agriculture up close Knowing that we were able to help cultivate community, build new relationships, and honor our ag personnel is an award itself, but we’re delighted that so many skilled chamber professionals could see the magic in our event ”

The Minot Area Chamber EDC (MACEDC) is proud to announce that the 2023 Dinner on the Prairie event was recognized for “Chamber Event of the Year” at the 2024 Mid-America Chamber Executives Conference in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. More than 230 guests experienced the event on August 1, 2023, which was made possible by the event co-chairs Fred Beuchler and Bonnie Scheresky, the MACEDC Agribusiness committee, countless volunteers, and supporters like presenting sponsor Town and Country Credit Union.

Mid-America Chamber Executives (MACE) is made of chamber professionals belonging to their sta chamber executive organization or state chamber commerce in the six-state area of Iowa, Minneso Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wiscons The Annual MACE Conference brings togeth chamber professionals from across the Midwest f continuing education, and recognizes a bro spectrum of successful events, activities, & initiativ with awards. MACEDC President | CEO Brekka Kram attended the event in early May and was incredib honored to accept the award.

Dinner on the Prairie is a farm-to-table signature event created as an opportunity for local ag producers to share a multicourse meal, conversation, and education with Minot community members not connected with agriculture. As guests arrived, they were welcomed by rows of planted crops & were given the opportunity to walk around the area sampling hors d’oeuvres while connecting with the farmers and ranchers who produce the appetizer’s ingredients During the sit-down dinner, the meal featured nearly a half dozen appetizers, a family-style meal, and dessert All menu items were made with North Dakota grown products, many from the local region, and each table included an agriculture expert to help answer questions and share experiences about their day-to-day process

8
MINOTAREACHAMBEREDCCOMMUNICATOR |JUNE2024

More than just a meal, it was an educational dining experience to educate new audiences on the importance of agriculture that included sample crops, agricultural and food facts, a Q&A panel with producers, and 40 farmers and ranchers from various areas of North Dakota agriculture who answered questions about their products, their jobs, their farms, and inquiries guests had about how food is produced and where it comes from

Invited guests included other key sectors of the Minot community with military, oil and gas executives from the energy sector, educators from numerous area schools and higher ed, and a broad array of healthcare workers.

The Minot region is home to not just a farming economy, but also agriculture distribution, suppliers, and manufacturing, making it critical that residents understand the value of agriculture to the food we eat and our local economy As the go-to organization for our business community to drive key initiatives that build and strengthen our economy, Minot Area Chamber EDC is proud of this event and cannot wait for the next course in 2025!

In May, Minot Area Chamber EDC and Visit Minot partnered to promote the community at the Williston Basin Petroleum Conference in Bismarck, ND

The Williston Basin Petroleum Conference is the largest conference and trade show in the nation focused on the Bakken, Three Forks and Williston Basin. This event brings together some of the industry's leading experts on breakthrough technologies, energy markets, potential untapped formations, the regulatory environment, and more.

This conference is a great opportunity to not only share the benefits of bringing business to Minot, but also to discuss opportunities with the Logistics Park of North Dakota Minot is proud to be the Gateway to the Bakken and home to so many oil and gas companies Our team members are grateful for the opportunity to attend a conference filled with so many industry leaders and had a great time making connections and learning about even more economic opportunities to bring to Minot

The Minot Area Chamber EDC (MACEDC) is focused on advancing agricultural opportunities to our area and state With MACEDC help and encouragement, the Souris Basin Planning Council (SBPC) was awarded $203,000 in funding for the North Dakota Department of Agriculture Regional Livestock Development and Planning Grant Program This funding was set aside by the 2023 State Legislature and is designed to “support site analysis and strategic planning activities and accommodate and encourage investment in livestock production ” MACEDC is on the steering committee for the six county-region, and after a competitive RFP process the committee unanimously selected First District Association of Local Governments out of South Dakota to perform the work.

The Regional Livestock Development and Planning Grant kickoff meetings were held prior, geared toward township and county leadership, as well as planning/zoning staff and members across the 6 counties tied into the grant. Approximately 20 individuals attended the two meetings to learn more about the grant and its benefit for planning for future livestock development in the region. The bulk of the work focused on identifying lots that meet some or all of the following criteria; 40 acres of minimum usable property, proximity to a hard-surface road, proximity to 3-phase power lines, and available water.

SBPC has partnered with First District Association of Local Governments to develop a strategic plan for Bottineau, Burke, McHenry, Mountrail, Renville, and Ward Counties The plan will identify suitable locations for rural economic development, including animal feeding operations, agricultural processing and storage facilities, and other agricultural related development

The North Dakota Department of Agriculture's mission is to serve, advocate, protect, and promote agriculture to benefit everyone Visit ndda nd gov to learn more about the Regional Livestock Development and Planning Grant Program.

“Engaging with high-level experts on the global competitors and adversaries of the United States was incredibly insightful. I emerged from this experience with a deeper appreciation for the global importance and significance of the missions of the Minot Air Force Base. The Airmen of the Minot Air Force Base are a stabilizing deterrent force in the world, and it’s obvious that the world recognizes that,” said Ryan Ackerman, MACEDC Chair-Elect

Each year has a different theme, with a constant focus on establishing an environment for open engagements on the diplomatic, economic, informational, cultural, and military instruments of national power and how each benefits a more stable and prosperous world order This year marked the 70th annual forum, and it aimed to address the strategic concerns generated by both China and Russia and the Great Power Competition

It was an educational and eye-opening experience, engaging with senior U.S. and international military officers as well as highly experienced government civilians during seminars, lectures, and social events; discussing and challenging views of senior military and civilian leaders and AWC faculty and students; and interacting with tomorrow’s senior military leaders. The Honorable Frank Kendall, Secretary of the Air Force; General David W. Allvin, Chief of Staff of the Air Force, and Lt General DeAnna M. Burt, Deputy Chief of Space Operations for Operations, Cyber, and Nuclear United States Space Force were all presenters, establishing an environment for frank discussions and broadening perspectives on national and international topics of interest.

"It was my honor to participate in the National Security Forum Hearing the state of our nation, directly from some of the most accomplished leaders in US military, enhanced my understanding of how national decisions impact our local community," said Cassidy Hjelmstad, MACEDC Board Chair "Prior to attending, Task Force 21 hosted the Nuclear Triad Symposium in Minot, providing a solid baseline for the Forum The connections made, and information learned, create further understanding as to how we can support our men and women who serve Minot Air Force Base and the nuclear mission "

The Midwest plays a critical role in agriculture in the United States and globally. As an ag hub that the world relies on for essential crops, livestock, equipment, and other products, we must have intentional conversations that convene leaders and policymakers to promote and protect this sector The region is also an entrepreneurial hub bursting with transformative ideas, education, cutting-edge technologies, and a growing ecosystem for businesses, all related to agriculture. We must continue to shine a light on the transformative work being done in the Midwest as the region continues to elevate itself on a national and global scale.

ADOPTANAIRMAN

The Adopt an Airman program fosters supportive relationships between Minot community members and Airmen who are just starting their Air Force careers. First-term Airmen enrolled in the program are not only new to the Air Force, but many are far away from home, family, and friends for the first time In addition to the Airmen themselves adjusting to these life changes, some are newly married, so their spouses are also experiencing the strains of these significant transitions Adjusting to the demands of being in the military and living in a new town far away from family can be stressful and lonely. It’s crucial that our Airman feel at home “outside the gate”. You as a host will benefit from an increased understanding of military life and a joy in knowing that you are making a positive difference in the lives of these young Airmen By providing a home-cooked meal or an adventure in Minot or the surrounding area, a listening ear, or a sound piece of advice, we hope that you will develop a friendship that will last even beyond these Airmen’s first assignment here in Minot

Check out some of the photos here, and be sure to slow up downtown so you can see the awesome artwork in person

In honor of the important work the men and women at Minot Air Force Base perform each and everyday to protect and serve our country, the Minot Honeybees softball team of the Northwoods League will change their name to the Minot Bombshells for one game on July 31

The players and coaches will wear special-designed jerseys for the double header against the La Crosse Steam at Corbett Field in Minot on Military Appreciation Night presented by Dakota Angus The night will feature military-themed entertainment, exclusive promotional offers and discounts on concessions and merchandise for military members, and special recognitions. The game-worn Bombshells jerseys will be auctioned off with all proceeds benefiting North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, courtesy of Farmers Union Insurance.

The Bombshells logo salutes a World War II tradition of airplane nose art. During this time, bomber crews, especially those who suffered high casualty rates, developed strong bonds with the planes they were flying, and affectionately decorated them with this artwork. It was believed by the flight crews that the nose art was bringing luck to the planes. Oftentimes, these air force crews were inspired by Esquire Magazine’s pin-up girls. The logo highlights this history, while symbolizing female empowerment

When the team was deciding their name back in November, they looked to the Minot community for name suggestions They wanted a name that was fun, unique, highlighted a key aspect of Minot culture, and a name that symbolizes female empowerment While the queen bee took the cake of the official team name, the Minot Bombshells was a clear second place, highlighting all of those key characteristics

“Playing as an alternate identity for promotional nights is a huge part of summer collegiate and minor league baseball, and we’re excited to bring that to Northwoods League Softball this summer” said Honeybees General Manager, Monica Hocking. “The Bombshells is a super fun brand that allows us to celebrate the strength and resilience of our military men and women, and the trailblazing spirit of the women who inspire us.”

Minot AFB proudly hosts the 5th Bomb Wing and 91st Missile Wing and is the only installation in the Department of Defense to host two legs of the Nuclear Triad (land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles and strategic bombers with nuclear bombs and missiles). Established during the Cold War in 1957 as an Air Defense Command base, Minot AFB has a rich history. Still today Minot AFB remains an integral part of the nation’s defense with a mission supporting the nuclear triad and maintaining global stability As of September 2023, Minot AFB had nearly 12,000 total personnel, making up about 20% of the total population of Minot

Tickets to watch the Minot Bombshells in action are available NOW to military members and their families here This military exclusive promotional offer includes a ticket to the game, a Honeybees Visor, and all-you-can-eat food and non-alcoholic beverages Tickets to this game for the general public are also available through the team’s Hot Tots x Honeybees Hybrid Plan powered by Scheels General single game tickets for the Honeybees will go on sale on June 3 Bombshells Merchandise can be purchased at honeybeesmerch com Fans wanting to learn more about the team are encouraged to check out honeybeessoftball com or sign up for the Honeybees e-newsletter for all information and updates.

The Minot Area Community Foundation (MACF) has granted $10,000 to the Minot Symphony Orchestra, to purchase a set of Adams Philharmonic Timpani (5 drums). Funding has been granted in the form of a challenge grant, where MACF will match dollar-fordollar raised up to $10,000 by August 31, 2024 This grant was made possible through the Chuck & Madge Westlie Fund

The Minot Symphony Orchestra (MSO) has encountered a need for a new set of Timpani due to the number of groups who use the instrument when performing or rehearsing at Ann Nicole Nelson Hall on the Minot State University (MSU) campus. The new percussion equipment will also be accessible to MSU Band, MSU Percussion Ensemble, MSU Percussion Students, Minot Brass Band, Minot Community Concert Band, and the Western Plains Opera Company. Minot State University also hosts several high school & middle school bands and music festivals throughout the year. Current timpani drums are unable to maintain consistent pitch and suffer when being moved for the numerous rehearsals and performances

“This is a wonderful opportunity to finally accomplish our goal of having the caliber of timpani the MSO needs to keep bringing our patrons high-quality performances. The timpani provides the heartbeat of an orchestra, and upgrading them is vital for the orchestra's growth,” states Efráin Amaya, MSU Associate Professor and Music Director of Minot Symphony Orchestra

The present set of 5 timpani would become the “back-up” set, to be used when needed for symphonic repertoire, and to alleviate the necessity of borrowing drums for regional music festivals The new professional quality timpani set will remain on stage in Ann Nicole Nelson Hall, to be used for performances and on-stage rehearsals, prolonging the life of the instrument.

“For almost 100 years, The Minot Symphony Orchestra has entertained area music lovers. The ability to leverage Foundation funds with other donations to purchase essential, high-quality equipment for use not only by MSO but other musicians will enhance the experience for concert goers and musicians alike,” said Jason Zimmerman, President of Minot Area Community Foundation

The Minot Symphony Orchestra will be raising funds to meet the challenge grant of $10,000 by August 31, 2024 Visit www minotsymphony com to donate online or contact Ellen Fenner at 701-858-4228 to make a direct donation.
