WEIGH2CHANGECLASSRECEIVES CDCRECOGNITION

Trinity Health’s Center for Diabetes Education’s diabetes prevention program, Weigh 2 Change, was awarded its Certificate of Full Plus Recognition from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) for offering an effective, quality and evidence-based program that meets all standards for CDC recognition

The center already held a Certificate of Full Recognition from the CDC; however, the CDC now recognizes Trinity Health’s Center for Diabetes Education’s diabetes prevention program as a FULL Plus member meaning that it will retain its recognition for five years as opposed to three years.

“The sustained success of your lifestyle change program makes an invaluable contribution to the prevention of type 2 diabetes, both in your community and nationally,” said Miriam T. Bell, MPH, Team Lead of the CDC’s National Diabetes Prevention Program. “It is programs like yours that are turning the tide in the fight against the epidemic of type 2 diabetes.”

Weigh 2 Change is a yearlong lifestyle intervention program that helps people – especially those with prediabetes –make lasting lifestyle changes to improve health and prevent type 2 diabetes Its key components are nutritional and exercise counseling, group support and the use of trained lifestyle coaches

An estimated 96 million people in the U S have prediabetes – defined by the CDC as a person with a blood sugar level higher than normal, but not high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes Research shows that people can lower their risk for type 2 diabetes by 58% by losing 5-7% of their body weight and exercising moderately 30 minutes a day, five days a week

Program Coordinator Michelle Fundingsland, RDN, LRD, says the CDC recognition gives participants the assurance that they’re receiving education and support that are effective and science-based “This has been a team effort throughout the years,” she said “We’re extremely proud to have our program recognized by the CDC We owe this to our team and our program participants who have worked hard to achieve this success and maintain it ”

Weigh 2 Change will begin its August session with “Session Zero” meetings, which are informational sessions where potential participants learn about the program to decide whether it’s right for them. Session Zero meetings will be held June 27 and July 25 at noon in the Trinity Health Community Conference Room at Town & Country Center. Only one session zero meeting is required. ASPIRINGTOMOREBYSUPPORTINGTHE MATTHEW25PROJECT

The Matthew 25 Project, founded in January 2019 has been gathering and distributing items to those in the greater Minot community for four years As a faith-based non-profit organization, their goal is to support those needing a handup with items like clothing, furniture, and other household like towels, small appliances, and baby items for example During the first three years, the organization made a lot of personal deliveries, but as the word of their mission grew, so did the need Just over a year ago, they got a permanent location where they can have people come to the warehouse and get the items, they need just off the 83-north bypass

At Aspire Credit Union, we opt to look for ways to say yes for our members, and ways to support those in the community serving and supporting others. Aspire also has begun taking a different approach to supporting non-profits in the area with a unique method focused on impact on an organization rather than quantity of businesses supported. “Being involved in the community is important,” shared Kevin Vigested, CEO of Aspire Credit Union. “By concentrating on one non-profit and their needs, we can also focus our efforts on how we can do our part supporting many aspects of their business. We are eager to see how our members and the greater community show up to support this great local nonprofit.”

With the focus on impact in mind, for the next three months, Aspire Credit Union will be collecting items for the Matthew 25 Project with each month having a theme around it

Kicking off in June, we are collecting bathroom items Items ranging from towels, washcloths, shower curtains, hair styling products like flat irons or blow dryers and anything else that could be used in the bathroom July will be focused on the kitchen Small appliances, cooking utensils, coffee pots, pans, cutting boards, etc We will conclude the three months with a baby item drive in August Diapers, wipes, sippy cups, bottles, infant toys, stuffed animals, bassinets etc

We kindly request that any items donated are new or gently used, and they can be dropped off right in our lobby at our 1430 South Broadway location in Minot The organization also accepts larger furniture pieces like cribs and mattresses, which can be donated directly to their distribution center at their 2410 30th Ave NW location

GIVE360ANNOUNCESPUMPTRACKPROJECT

During the 2021 Fall Grant Meeting, Give360 members explored different options for a new and accessible community space in Minot The idea of a pump track emerged as the frontrunner, capturing the group’s enthusiasm Following research on a number of locations, Give360 created a partnership with the Minot Park District to initiate the planning phase of the pump track project

Besides being an innovative play park amenity trending in more and more public spaces, a pump track is a track for wheeled sports equipment that, when ridden properly, does not require pedaling or pushing, but a “pumping” action to maintain momentum. A pump track is a loop that consists of a series of rollers (bumps or small hills in the track) and berms (corners). The “pump” part is the pushing-down and pulling-up action performed by riders in accordance with the structures design as the main source of propulsion. Pump tracks are designed this way so they can be ridden completely without the need for pushing and pedaling, making it relatively simple to use and caters to a wide variety of rider skill levels and accessible to wheelchairs.

Give360 is partnering with the Minot Park District in developing Minot Park District property located west of the Jack Hoeven Park Baseball fields, to include a pump track, as well as proposed plans for an inclusive playground with pouredin-place protective surfacing, vehicle parking, restroom building, and paved walking paths with connections to existing paths

Give360 would like to construct two pump tracks that cater to a diverse range of needs The first track will be designed for all ages and abilities, ensuring an inclusive experience for everyone The second track will feature a fully handicap accessible loop as well as a dedicated “safety town” section tailored for our youngest riders This track will offer additional programming opportunities for public safety education and adaptive sports group use

The Minot Pump Track will be owned and maintained by the Minot Park District, and accessible to all ages and abilities

The pump track will benefit not only the residents of Minot but also those from surrounding areas and visitors to come to our region in the summer months With the nearest pump track located in Dunn Center, ND, the establishment of a pump track in Minot holds potential to serve a wider audience The addition of connecting walking paths will integrate this project with existing amenities in the area, such as the Hoeven Ball Park and Wee Links Golf Course, transforming it into a destination for individuals of all ages and interests throughout the community. Furthermore, this initiative will seamlessly connect with the pre-existing citywide fitness paths, thereby ensuring enhanced accessibility for the entire Minot area.

Fundraising Goal:

Give360 has committed $30,000 so far to the project. The Minot Junior Golf Association has approved a $100,000 matching grant for the Pump Track, meaning all dollars raised will be matched up to $100,000. Give360’s goal is to raise around $300,000 for the pump track. The goal would be for the pump track to be completed sometime in 2024. The pump track project includes the groundwork and installation as well as additional site drainage required to keep water out of the recessed areas between the tracks

The Minot Park District has engaged EAPC for the professional services of the location design EAPC has engaged KLJ as civil engineering consultant, and EAPC will work directly with Pump Trax USA for the Pump Track course design

The pump track provides an inclusive space where children of all ages and abilities can engage in physical activity, learn new skills, and foster social connections By investing in this project, all children have the opportunity to participate, promoting physical fitness and healthy lifestyles while nurturing their overall development

GIVE360&MINOTPARKSCOLLABORATEONCOMMUNITYPUMPTRACK

The Minot Area Community Foundation’s Give360 Giving Circle and Minot Parks are collaborating to bring a pump track to the Minot Community.

Give360 is working with Minot Parks to develop property located west of the Jack Hoeven Park Baseball fields to include two pump tracks. One track will be designed for all ages and abilities, ensuring an inclusive experience for everyone. The second track will feature a fully handicap accessible loop as well as a dedicated “safety town” section tailored for the youngest riders.

In addition to the pump track announcement, Give360 has received a matching grant of $100,000 towards the project from the Minot Junior Golf Association Contributions will be matched dollar for dollar now until the first $100,000 is met

“We are incredibly excited to partner with Minot Parks on this unique concept With the matching grant from Minot Junior Golf we hope to meet our fundraising goal by the end of the year to prepare for the 2024 construction season,” said Jason Zimmerman, President of the Minot Area Community Foundation

A pump track is a loop that consists of a series of rollers (bumps or small hills in the track) and berms (corners) The “pump” part is the pushing-down and pulling-up action performed by riders in accordance with the structures design as the main source of propulsion Pump tracks are designed this way so they can be ridden completely without the need for pushing and pedaling, making it relatively simple to use and caters to a wide variety of rider skill levels and accessible to wheelchair users

“When our community works together with the same goal in mind, good things happen.” says Elly DesLauriers, Executive Director of the Minot Park District. “We are thankful for the opportunity to work with our partners at the Minot Area Community Foundation and Minot Junior Golf Association to enhance the quality of life for the Minot Community.”

The pump track will provide an inclusive space where children of all ages and abilities can engage in physical activity, learn new skills, and foster social connections.

THENORTHERNPLAINSCHILDREN’SADVOCACY CENTERTORAISEAWARENESSFORCHILDABUSE WITH3RDANNUALSAVEJANEEVENT

Oak Park Amphitheater, Minot ND – July 12, 2023 – From 6pm-8pm, locals from Minot will join the Northern Plains Children’s Advocacy Center (NPCAC) in taking a stand against child abuse at Minot’s Oak Park Amphitheater with their 3rd annual Save Jane event.

For 2+ hours straight, volunteers from Minot will read the names and ages of over 600 children who were served due to sexual abuse and other crimes committed against them in Ward County and surrounding communities in 2022. Because these children are minors and their identities must be protected, “Jane Doe” and “John Doe” will be used in place of their names The Save Jane inaugural event launched in Dallas in 2019 This is the third year for the NPCAC to join in the awareness effort

“The Northern Plains Children’s Advocacy Center hopes that through Save Jane, Minot and surrounding communities will recognize the absolute magnitude and prevalence of child abuse in Ward County and ND - it is everywhere you look,” said Christal Halseth, NPCAC Executive Director “It will take 2+ hours of non-stop reading to name each child who was served due to a crime committed against them last year in our region That is simply unacceptable The event will go through until every name is read because that is representative of the NPCAC and our partners - we never stop fighting for chilfen who have suffered unspeakable abuse The NPCAC and our multi-disciplinary team will continue to do our work, but we need the community’s help ”

Influential leaders from around the community have signed up for shifts to read names throughout the event The NPCAC welcomes all of Minot to take a turn on-stage and participate in this impactful event by reading a selection of names To volunteer to read names at our 2023 event, please email christal@northernplainscac org

About NPCAC

The NPCAC provides a compassionate and effective way to bring services to children victimized by sexual abuse and other crimes. This public-private collaboration significantly reduces the trauma associated with reporting child abuse and holds offenders accountable.
