I am honored to welcome you to the Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles Foundation’s (“BWLF”) 48th Annual Scholarship Fundraiser and Awards Luncheon! This year’s theme, “VISIONARIES: MAKING GOOD TROUBLE,” recognizes the importance of courageously breaking barriers, advocating for and inspiring the collective in our local Los Angeles community.

This year’s honorees are incredible visionaries, who have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the community. They each have truly made and are truly “making good trouble!” Their work literally continues to change lives and will undoubtedly have long lasting generational impact. Thank you for creating the building blocks, being courageous enough to disrupt, and for laying the groundwork for the next generation of leaders and visionaries in our community. The honorees are as follows:

Charisse Bremond Weaver, President & CEO of Brotherhood Crusade – Excellence in Advocacy Honoree Charisse Bremond Weaver has led Brotherhood Crusade for over 19 years, raising over $75MM and expanding the organization’s annual budget to $11MM. Recognized with awards like the James Irvine Foundation Leadership Award, Charisse is a Utah State University graduate residing in Los Angeles, CA.

Alfred “Al” Jenkins, Bar Daddy – Excellence in Community Service Honoree Al Jenkins, known as “Bar Daddy,” has helped over 3,000 Black law graduates pass the California Bar Exam for free. Initially an electromechanical engineer, Jenkins was inspired to become a lawyer at 40. After graduating from Loyola Law School, he dedicated himself to tutoring, addressing the low pass rates among African Americans.

Yvette Nicole Brown, Emmy-Nominated Actress, Writer, Producer, and Host – Excellence in the Arts Honoree Yvette Nicole Brown is an Emmy-nominated actress known for her roles in “Community” and “A Black Lady Sketch Show.” Her film credits include “Tropic Thunder” and “Avengers: Endgame,” and she has voiced characters in video games and hosted shows. A University of Akron graduate, she began her career in Los Angeles.

Wonya Lucas, Former President & CEO Hallmark Media – Corporate Excellence Honoree Wonya Lucas, former President and CEO of Hallmark Media, oversaw Hallmark’s TV networks and streaming service. We applaud each of our honorees, and their dedication to and efforts in advancing the community. We are honored to celebrate your many accomplishments.

I would also like to thank our Sponsors and Scholarship Underwriters for your continued support. Without you we would not have the ability to assist the next generation of law students. I would also like to thank the Scholarship Selection Committee, including chairs, Tiffanie Spivey and Kathiana Aurelien, for your time and commitment. Your work is appreciated and has been instrumental. Not only did we significantly increase the number of applicant’s this year, but you also selected a remarkable group of bright law students who like our honorees, are visionaries making good trouble on their respective law school campuses and in the community.

BWLF President Alma Graham, thank you for your leadership, encouragement and support. As for the Foundation Board Members- your commitment to BWLF is unparalleled. We are again honored to recognize the Foundation’s partnership with California ChangeLawyers and their Diversity scholarship program which shares the Foundation’s focus on identifying deserving law students of color. Re: 48th Annual Scholarship Fundraiser & Awards Luncheon

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 48th annual Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles Scholarship Fundraiser and Awards Luncheon, “Visionaries: Making Good Trouble” Since 1975, this organization has supported the growth of necessary voices otherwise missing in a field where advocacy and representat ion matter. “Good trouble”, as the late and great John Lewis described, is about standing up and speaking out In a legal system that was not built for you, not built for many, this Association pushes through the barriers, not only promoting one another, but creating and expanding the space in which you affect change.

I wish to congratulate today’s honorees for these distinctions of excellence as well as BWL President Ronni Whitehead Otieno for her dedication to the Association this past year. My office is incredibly grateful to Charisse Bremond Weaver and all that the Brotherhood Crusade has done for the people of the 55th Assembly District, from COVID-19 vaccine clinics to our annual holiday event. Ms. Weaver is an asset to our ongoing collaboration. With the financial barriers confronting anyone who considers attending law school, the attention Mr. Al Jenkins has given to students without a fee is simply unheard of today, and yet invaluable to many. His conviction is unparalleled. Wonya Lucas led a tidal shift in representation on our screens while serving as President and CEO at Hallmark Media. It is that advocacy that opens doors for generations to come, while creating stories we can enjoy with our entire family. A household name, Yvette Nicole Brown lives in our hearts just as much as she belongs on our screens. It is a special gift to bring laughter and comfort to so many people, and Ms. Brown has made our lives all the richer for it.

Please join me in celebrating today’s honorees today, and celebrate the work you each do every day. Treasure one another for the adversity you stride through. Congratulations once more to the honorees, and on behalf of the 55th Assembly district, thank you all.

Sincerely,

FOUNDING MEMBERS

BLACK WOMEN LAWYERS OF LOS ANGELES, INC.

History

Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles, Inc. is a non-profit corporation whose mission is dedicated to charitable, educational and community-based services. BWL was founded in 1975 after a small group of Los Angeles based African-American women judges and attorneys held a luncheon meeting to discuss the marked absence of an organization which addressed the needs and concerns of African-American women in the legal profession. The dialogue and events that followed became the genesis of BWL.

Over the years, BWL branched out and grew through its various community projects and committee activities. The first BWL scholarship luncheon was held in 1975 at the Medallion Restaurant. Since then, BWL has raised scholarship funds annually for second and third year law students through its annual fundraising efforts by the Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles Foundation.

In 1982, BWL and Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles (“WLALA”) co-founded the Harriet Buhai Center for Family Law (“Center”). The Center has evolved into one of the primary providers of pro bono family law services in Los Angeles County. In recognition of BWL’s significant community contributions as a founder and co-sponsor of the Center, the National Conference of Women Bar Associations presented its first annual Public Service Award to BWL and WLALA in July 1985.

In 1991, BWL was among the various ethnic minority bar associations that formed the Multicultural Bar Alliance. Through its continued involvement and support of this alliance, BWL offers a needed channel for communication for attorneys of color, both outside and within the African-American community. In 1992, the BWL Foundation was established to support and fund BWL’s numerous charitable, educational and community-based services. BWL also gives holiday food baskets to needy families, donations to shelters for the homeless and battered women, and strives to expand its outreach programs to schools.

The viability of BWL’s programs is dependent upon your support and commitment. Thank you for your interest and commitment to our organization.

Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing

Lift ev’ry voice and sing, Till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of Liberty; Let our rejoicing rise High as the list’ning skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.

Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us; Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on till victory is won.

Stony the road we trod, Bitter the chast’ning rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, Have not our weary feet Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?

We have come over a way that with tears has been watered. We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered, Out from the gloomy past, Till now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way; Thou who hast by Thy might, Led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we meet Thee, Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath Thy hand, may we forever stand, True to our God, true to our native land.

Volunteer Bar Exam Coach, feat. in documentary film “Bar Daddy”

Al has helped over 3,000 Black law graduates pass the California Bar Exam for free. His selfless efforts have earned him the nickname, “Bar Daddy.”

Born to a working poor family in Harlem, New York, Al Jenkins showed an aptitude for science and became an electromechanical engineer for Hughes Aircraft in Los Angeles. In 1972, while on jury duty, Alfred “Al” Jenkins, then 40, was suddenly inspired by the idea of being a lawyer. Even though he was only a few classes shy of getting his master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Southern California, he left his career and enrolled in Los Angeles’s Loyola Law School.

Once he graduated, he passed the bar exam on the very first try. Then, he began tutoring others to help them to pass the bar exam as well. I’m building professionals,” Jenkins said. “I’m building lives, really.” “Law school grads,” he said, “cannot get on with their lives until they get that bar exam out of their way.”

Each year, over 7,000 people take the California Bar Exam, and about 50% are not successful. African Americans fare worse as they attempt to pass the exam. Only 5% of Black first-time bar exam takers passed the February California Bar Exam – compared to 52% of White and 32% of Hispanic first-time bar exam takers.
