Minnesota State Fair Open Swine Show Judges Shari Sell-Bakker MN Junior Barrow Classic Showmanship

Shari Sell-Bakker grew up in the stock show industry, having operated Midwest Genetics with her dad and sisters before attending Iowa State University. She was a member of the livestock judging team and worked at the teaching farm while there. Sell-Bakker and her husband, Jarrod, now reside in Dike, Iowa, with their three children and own and operate Bakker Bros Genetics with her brother-in-law Jordan. They have 100 showpig sows and raise spots, durocs, hamps and cross breeding stock. Sell-Bakker is also an Extension Director in Grundy County and owns The Farm Store, an ag focused home goods business. She spends her spare time at stock shows and encourages kids in the industry to be brave, get involved and push themselves to meet new people.

John Huinker All other breeds, Chester White, open barrow, Poland China, Spotted Hots and Yorkshire

John Huinker is a third-generation purebred breeder from Decorah, Iowa. He has bred Durocs for 45 years and raises crossbred show pigs. Huinker has been married to his wife, Ruth, for 43 years, and they have four children and 11 grandchildren. Huinker has judged many county, state, and national shows over the years, and is looking forward to judging the Minnesota State Fair again. He says that working with superintendent Jerry Hawton has been a true pleasure and the Minnesota exhibitors are the best to work with, too!

Ty Engnell Berkshire, Duroc, Hampshire, Hereford and MN Junior Barrow Classic crossbred gilts and barrows Ty Engnell joins us from Good Hope, Ill. Welcome, Ty!

Special Awards Randy Morris Memorial Award: $1,000, given to the overall Senior Division Sweepstakes winner in the Minnesota State Fair Junior Barrow Show Classic. Randy was a swine industry leader, a highly recognized swine judge and a breeder of top-level show pigs. He especially loved swine shows involving youth. His leadership and tireless work in developing and conducting the Minnesota State Fair Junior Barrow Show should never be forgotten.

Minnesota Purebred Swine Breeders: Minnesota Purebred Swine Breeders will contribute premiums to the junior barrow show exhibitors. Premiums paid in each breed class (minimum of four hogs for a breed class): $125 to the champion barrow; $100 to the reserve champion barrow; $75 to the third-place barrow; and $50 to the fourth-place barrow.

National Swine Registry: The National Swine Registry will offer $500 to the grand champion barrow and $250 to the reserve grand champion barrow at the Minnesota State Fair Junior Barrow show. Must be a registered Duroc, Hampshire, Landrace or Yorkshire and the exhibitor must have a transferred pedigree of the winning barrow in their possession at the time of being named champion.

Certified Pedigreed Swine: Certified Pedigreed Swine will offer $250 to the grand champion junior show barrow overall and $150 to the reserve champion junior show barrow overall, provided it is a registered purebred Chester White, Hereford, Poland China or Spotted Hog. Exhibitor must have the pedigree at the show.
