From the President- John Vander Wal

A

s low temperatures with frigid wind slowly transition to more moderate temps and longer daylight, our industry is still challenged with negative margins. Too much milk in the system or not enough processing capacity—whatever the reason is—our association will have a very tough year ahead. We are all probably getting tired and exhausted of finding ways to cut costs and this will most likely effect Minnesota Holstein’s bottom line. It is for this reason that our sale committee along with full approval of the board has decided to cancel our spring sale. Through the course of the summer, the committee will see if conditions are changing favorably in order to do a fall sale. Although long term, the committee is more leaning towards one sale a year preferably in the spring of the Hutchinson location. Please let us know what your thoughts are on this.   On a more pleasant note, I am honored to introduce to you our two new part time employees. As business manager we hired Amanda Bedtke from Plainview, Minn. Amanda will take care of the day to day business for our association and will most likely answer the phone when you call in with questions or comments. For the Marketing Manager

position in charge of our publications, newsletters, catalogs, social media and website we hired Chelsey Asche from St Peter, Minn. A further introduction of these two ladies will follow in the magazine. I hope you will help me welcome them to our association.   I would like to invite all our members to come to Willmar to attend our all breeds convention on March 9-10. The agenda for these two days can be found at the Minnesota Holstein Association website.   Also the juniors have their convention coming up in March. Please encourage your children, grandchildren and neighbor kids to attend this fun-filled event on March 2325 in Mankato.   This year the 2018 Minnesota State Show will be held in Jordan, Minn., June 19-23. Show rules and registration can be found in this edition or online registration is also possible this year.   Lastly, I would like to encourage you to visit our website at www.mnholstein.com. It is a great avenue to promote your herd and farm. With no spring sale this year, it’s a great tool to advertise some extra cattle you might want to sell. I hope to see you down the road or you can reach me at 507-215-0339.   -John Vander Wal

National Directors’ Report

A

s we near the end of winter, we can start hoping for more comfortable temperatures that will help us forget about the current sub-zero temps, ice and accumulating snowfall.   Many states have held their state conventions by now and have recognized outstanding individuals for their amazing accomplishments. Congratulations to everyone!   Holstein USA set a new record for the number of registrations and basic ID’s; the old record went back to 2016. Holstein enthusiasm is alive and well! The “State of the Association” report was first shared with the Holstein membership at the Iowa state meeting in February. The entire report can be viewed on the Holstein USA website. It is divided into several segments that can be viewed at your own time and leisure.   Holstein USA was the subject of a documentary that aired on RFD-TV. “Holstein America: A Tribute to the National Dairy Farmers” was shown several different times in February. Dairy farmers across the country proved to be excellent spokesmen for the dairy industry and for Holstein USA in particular. A common theme was how Holstein USA was a contributing factor in their successful enterprises. It spoke of the hard work and dedication of their families in continuing to improve the image and genetics of the Holstein

cow. You can view this documentary on the Holstein USA website.   Holstein Foundation recently graduated 51 from the YDLI Class 10. We encourage all young dairy farmers to consider being part of this educational opportunity. Applications for Class 11 are due on August 1, 2018.   The Judges Conference will be held in Madison, Wis., on April 26th as part of the Spring Show. Attendance is required once every five years for everyone who wishes to be on the National or Qualified Judge List. After attending the conference, one must complete an application due to Holstein USA in August 2018. The 2019 Judging Conference will be held in Columbus, Ohio.   As your national directors, we have all enjoyed visiting with you as you meet with fellow dairy farmers, family, and business associates. We hope to see many of you at the 2018 National Holstein Convention to be held in Michigan June 29th – July 3rd.   As always, feel free to contact us with your concerns or new ideas for improving Holstein USA. - Paul Buhr, Mark Kerndt, Dale Drendel, Boyd Schaufelberger, and Corey Geiger Holstein Association USA National Directors

ndy Stuewe’s breeding philosophy of selecting for high-type genetics and correcting phenotypic faults with each mating has helped him see steady progress and consistent success over the 13 years since he took over the family dairy farm near Hamburg, Minn.   He became the fifth-generation to dairy Andy and Jodene Stuewe are pictured with their two when he took over the farm in 2005 from his daughters Ava (10) and Jayde (7). parents David and Joyce. Andy’s wife Jodene, and daughters Ava (10) and Jayde (7) are also involved with the small family operation. Stuewe keeps the original “Stuewe’s” prefix that his father held and also has his own “Flower-Brook” prefix that he started in the late 90s. Today the facilities of the operation consist of a 71-stall, tie stall barn, heifer shed with 17 free stalls for dry cows and hoop barn for calves. Stuewe farms 200 acres including 30 acres of alfalfa, 135 acres of corn and 35 acres of beans. Since taking over the herd, the product of diligent management is a rolling herd average that has risen from 22,000 lbs in 2005 to about 27,000 lbs today. The herd is also running about a 4.0% fat test and 3.3% protein test. In addition, the BAA percent has risen from 106 to 110.8, with a max BAA of 111.6. In fact, this year, Stuewe ranked 11th in the country for herds of 76 to 150 cows for BAA on 82 cows classified. Stuewe ranked 77th overall in the country for BAA.

The matriarch of Stuewe’s herd was Stuewes Milan Gabrielle 3E EX-93. She was a homebred cow with numerous descendants in the Flower-Brook herd. Behind Gabrielle are three more Very Good dams. She has had a total of 11 excellents in the Flower-Brook herd. In addition to transmitting some phenomenal offspring, Milan Gabrielle also was a steady productive cow. Her best record was 8-06 365 33,970 4.0%F 1363 3.4%P 1151.   “She is the first cow that comes to mind when you think of a cow that has impacted our herd,” Stuewe said. “She has transmitted some awesome offspring and she only had two bull calves during her lifetime.”   She was the dam of all three heifers in the first place group of Junior Best Three Females at the Midwest Fall National in 2009. Her daughter Stuewes FB Giddy-ET 2E EX-94 was named the 2008 Holstein USA Star of the Breed for her success in the show ring and the milking parlor.   Another noteworthy daughter of Stuewes Milan Gabrielle was Stuewes Dundee Gabrina 2E EX-94. Her show ring resume consists of fifth place Senior Three-Year Old at the Midwest Fall National in 2011, the fourth place Senior Two-Year Old at the Midwest Fall National in 2010, Reserve Intermediate Champion of the Minnesota State Show in 2010, second place Fall Yearling at the Midwest Fall National in 2009 and the Junior Champion at the Midwest Fall National in 2008.   A more recent show-worthy offspring of Stuewes Milan Gabrielle is her great great granddaughter Flower-Brook Gladys-Red-ET VG-88. This cow sired by Apples Absolute-Red-ET had an outstanding 2017 show season. She was the fifth place Senior Two-Year Old at the Wisconsin Dairy Showcase Red and White Show, first place Senior Two-Year Old, Honorable Mention Intermediate Champion, and Honorable Mention Overall Champion at the Minnesota State Fair Red and White Show.

Price & Cunningham recently sold her on the California National Convention Sale on January 25, 2018 in Sonoma, Calif., and she was the highest-selling lot. She was purchased by Clayton Arntz for $13,700.

Looking Forward to 2018 Season

Flower-Brook Corena-Red ET is one of three sisters Stuewe bred who have had success in the show ring. Corena was nominated All-America Red and White Fall Calf in 2017. daughter was the fourth place Junior Calf at World Dairy Expo in 1997, and she was Stuewe’s first All-American nomination. Last year, Stuewe showed one cow that traced back to Rose; she is Flower-Brook Geno-Red EX-92. In 2017, she placed fifth in the Five-Year Old class at the Wisconsin Dairy Showcase Red and White Show. Geno was one of many that Stuewe showed at the showcase; in fact, he was named the Premier Breeder of the Red and White Show.   Flower-Brook Corena-Red-ET, Flower-Brook Coral-Red-ET, and Flower-Brook Cordell Red-ET, are a set of three full sisters bred by Stuewe that saw success last year.   Stuewe sold Corena on the Triple T and Heath Sale on May 6th, 2017 in Marysville, Ohio. She was purchased by Price and Cuningham who exhibited her in the 2017 show season.   Coral was exhibited by Kaleb, Cole, & Carter Kruse at the 2017 Minnesota State Fair Red and White Show and was the first place Fall Heifer calf; Cordell, exhibited by Stuewe followed in second place. At the 2017 Wisconsin Dairy Showcase Red and White Show, Coral placed 2nd in the Fall Calf class and earned Reserve Junior Champion; Cordell followed as fifth place Fall Calf.   In the Fall Heifer class at Expo in 2017, Corena, Coral, and Cordell placed 3rd, 9th, and 10th respectively. MARCH 2018

Stuewe is looking forward to the 2018 show season. Last spring at the Triple T and Heath sale, he purchased Eastriver Goldwyn Deb 176ET in a partnership with Corey Feltmann. They saw a glimpse of her potential last year as she was the Reserve Grand Champion, first-place Senior Three Year Old Cow, and Intermediate Champion at the 2017 Midwest Holstein Show. Stuewe and Feltmann are looking forward to seeing how she performs in 2018. In addition, they are hopeful that she will transmit her high type, wide muzzle and high, wide rear udder to her offspring. They currently have seven pregnancies from her to sexed Doorman semen that are due in March, and they plan to flush her again.   Another heifer that Stuewe is excited to see develop in 2018 is FlowerBrook Jordy GI Jo-ET. She a September calf sired by Cycle McGucci Jordy-Red that goes back to Stuewes Milan Gabrielle 3E EX-93.

Humble About Impact Beyond Hamburg

Stuewe has worked hard to be able to market his elite genetics. In 2011, he hosted his first sale where he sold 126 lots. He continues to actively market his genetics and especially focuses on the niche of red & white cattle. Consequently, the Flower-Brook and Stuewe’s prefix can be found all over the country and numerous All-American nominations were bred by Stuewe. However, he remains humble about this success. Stuewe’s “breed for type and manage for production” philosophy that has been in his family for generations has never wavered. When asked if he has a future goal for his farm, he said his number one goal is to keep finding ways to be profitable marketing genetics. Stuewe noted that marketing genetics has become more of a challenge in today’s industry. Of course his passion for the show ring also plays into his vision for the future.   “Expo is something I look forward to every year. It is an honor to compete on the biggest stage and also meet people. I have a dream of someday having a string of 10 to 12 head at Expo.” Stuewe said.

Hollermann Family Dairy LLC.— Trusting

I

n 1976, Bert Hollermann was raising beef cattle; however, he knew it wasn’t his passion. He wanted to find an avenue into the business of milking cows and with the help of a partnership formed with Dr. Ed Tomsche, he was able to build a double-6 swing milking parlor and begin milking 120 Holsteins on his farm near Burtrum, Minn., in 1979.   “Starting out in this business is tough without some help, and it takes about 15 to 20 years to really get your feet on the ground,” Bert explained. “I was very thankful for the partnership I had with Dr. Tomsche. It was a great relationship and worked well for many years.”   Since he began dairying, the farm has seen many changes. Over the years his herd grew from within and quality genetics through A.I. breeding was always a focus for Bert. In 1995, his partnership with Tomsche ended and his son, Shawn and his wife Debbie joined Shawn (left) and Bert (right) are pictured in the parlor that Bert started milking in 1979. as partners in the operation. Shawn’s daughter Megan is also involved with the farm when she is home from Ridgewater College in Willmar, Finding Faith in Genomics Minn., where she is a sophomore. Their cows are housed in deep-bedded sand free stalls and Shawn said. “But it got to a point where I would open a bull book and milked in the same parlor that Bert started with in 1979; although it so many of the top bulls were genomic bulls, so I wanted to know how has transformed over the years. in the Numbers

Genetics Driven Reproduction Program

Today Hollermann Dairy’s reproduction program is driven by their genetic goals and strategy. Their main genetic selection index is Net Merit $. Shawn explained that his goal is to breed problem-free and productive cows.   All females on the farm are genomically tested and then that data is used within the genetic selection strategy. Every Friday, heifers are flushed and embryos are placed into recipients. Shawn explained that a majority of their heifers are flushed and most of their milking cows are recipients.   “We want to keep moving forward with the younger genetics,” Shawn explained. “For some of our more elite heifers, we also do some IVF work as well to move even faster with the program.”   All of Hollermann’s females that are in the top one percent for the Holstein breed in Net Merit $ enter the flush program. Females that don’t make the cut are culled or used as recipients. Currently, they are not planning to grow the herd, so they have more opportunity to cull animals based on genetics.   “If a heifer doesn’t make the cut with genomics, she is gone” Shawn explained. “We have phenomenal two-year-old cows. It tells me that the genomic numbers are working.”   Since the Hollermanns started genomic testing, their average Net Merit $ per animal has climbed by about 100 per year.   “Most of our heifers are in the 97th or 98th percentile for Net Merit in the Holstein breed.” Shawn said.

Genomics Finds Unexpected Elite Animals

Since entering the genomic game, the Hollermanns have had some success with marketing bulls in AI. Including 001HO11692 Mace, 001HO11694 Micky, 001HO11923 Trouble, 001HO11989 Romero, and 001HO12980 Ike who are all currently active with Genex. her 7th or 8th lactation and the heifer she had ended up being really high and caught some attention,” Shawn said. “We bred her to a Silver and the bull from that mating, Romero, ended up being a success. We never would have found Romero’s dam without genomics.”

Association Offers Marketing Opportunities

Once they began working in genomics, the Hollermanns realized the importance of registering their cattle and became members of Holstein USA and the Minnesota Holstein Association. Since their plan is to stay at 400 cows while improving their genetics, marketing extra females is important to their business plan. The Hollermanns have appreciated the opportunity to consign females to the Minnesota Holstein Association state sales over the years.   In addition to consigning females to the Minnesota Holstein Association sales, the Hollermanns also sold a homebred bull on the National Convention Sale last year in Washington. Last February, the Hollermanns had a production sale and sold 100 head total. They plan to have another production sale in October of 2018.   “We have pushed our genetics hard and it is working,” Shawn said. “We have tried to create a genetic pool as another source of income to the dairy.”

here is a saying many people know called, “Home is Where the Heart is.” For many people, it means they feel most comfortable in the home they grew up in. For a dairy farmer, this phrase can be changed to say, “Home is Where the Herd is.” I am lucky to call my home and herd, Shir-Man Registered Holsteins.   My name is Haely Leiding, and I am the 20-year-old daughter of Todd and Stacy Leiding and twin sister to Kayla. We live in Fountain, Minn. We currently milk around 65 registered Holsteins in a tie stall barn. In addition to cattle, we farm around 350 acres of alfalfa, corn, and soybeans.

Grandfather Is Great Role Model

been honored seven times with a scholarship through the Minnesota 4-H Dairy Showcase. This program honors the top twenty-five dairy kids in Minnesota. The Minnesota 4-H Dairy Showcase takes into account involvement in 4-H, youth organizations, dairy activities, and community activities. Additionally, you can receive points from success in interviews, the show ring, and showmanship at the State Fair. My final year in 4-H, I accomplished one of my lifelong dreams and won the showcase. These scholarships have helped me develop my own herd, travel to conventions and conferences to continue networking, and further my education at the University of Minnesota.

Striving for High Goals in Dairy Judging

Dairy judging is where I have found success and enjoyment over the years. I have participated in dairy judging since third grade and with my mom as my 4-H and FFA coach, I have set high goals for myself and my team. These dreams have come true through 4-H, FFA and collegiate contests. In 2013, our 4-H senior team placed first at our state contest and earned a trip to judge at World Dairy Expo. Being on the colored shavings and placing beautiful cows was a dream come true and definitely something that will not be forgotten. Our team placed fourth in the nation, and I earned a ninth place individual finish. My team and I were very successful in FFA judging as well. We placed both first and second at the Minnesota State FFA Convention in 2012 and 2013. Placing second at our state contest allowed us to participate in the AllAmerican Dairy Judging Contest in Harrisburg, Pa., where our team placed first in reasons and overall. Individually, I placed first in reasons and overall. In 2013, we traveled to the National FFA Convention where our team earned second place overall and first place in the management presentation portion. These experiences have been my goals for many years and to achieve them was an extraordinary feeling. I have continued dairy judging at the collegiate level with the University of Minnesota. As a member of the junior team, I competed at the Accelerated Genetics Dairy Judging Contest where I finished seventh place individually. I also judged at the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) where my team placed second in reasons and first overall, and I was the sixth place individual. I can not wait to finish my time with the judging team this fall.

and facilitate multiple AllBreeds Conventions that bring together top dairy producers, dairy industry leaders, and youth who will be the future of the dairy community. These conventions have been the highlight of my years as a junior member, and I worked hard to make them the best for the youth that attended.

Haely and her twin sister Kayla loved spending time with their dad on the farm from a young age.

Planning For a Future in Agriculture

At the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, I am majoring in Agricultural Education and minoring in Animal Science. With this degree, my professional goal is to become an influential Agricultural Education Teacher. I will continue to show my love and knowledge of the dairy industry in my classroom and help my students better understand that farmers, especially dairy farmers, truly value the quality product they work so hard to produce. I hope that my education helps persuade my students to get involved in the agricultural industry and become future agribusiness leaders. I can also see myself working for an agricultural company in the public relations or sales industries. I know I would enjoy representing and sharing farmers’ stories with consumers. Another goal of mine is to be involved in volunteer programs to help give back to the organizations that helped shape me. This could be volunteering to help a 4-H dairy judging team in the county I am in. I could also see myself being involved in my family’s dairy farm in the future. Although I don’t want my main job to be farming, I still see myself owning Registered Holsteins in the herd and helping with chores. The farm is such an important part of my life, and I think it will be hard to leave my herd and home behind. Although my future is still uncertain, the one thing I know is I will be involved in the dairy industry in some way.

MJHA is “Home Away From Home”

The Minnesota Junior Holstein Association (MJHA) is where I have found a home away from home. MJHA has allowed me to gain friendships with dairy enthusiasts from across Minnesota and other states. Through my involvement in MJHA, I have been able to compete in dairy quiz bowl at state and national levels, earn the award of a National Young Distinguished Member Finalist, and take on different leadership roles. I have served on the MJHA board of directors for over four years. The involvement in these four years has allowed me to make connections with younger members to help develop their love of this organization and watch them grow into successful young adults. It has also allowed me to network and learn more about the adult association, and how I can continue to stay involved in the Holstein Association even after my time as a junior is up. Finally, I have been able to plan

Following My Family Tradition of Passion

T

homas Edison said it best, “We often miss opportunity because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” Growing up on a dairy farm, I found these words easily relatable. I am Kayla Leiding, a junior studying Agricultural Communication and Marketing with a minor in Animal Science at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. I am the fourth generation on my family dairy farm, Shir-Man Registered Holsteins. Our farm’s prefix is very meaningful to me because it combines the first four letters of my grandma’s name, Shirley, and the last three letters of my grandpa’s name, Tillman.   Our farm was started by my great-grandfather. My grandfather followed in his footsteps by purchasing cattle from his father after graduating from high school. My parents joined the farm in 1995 and purchased the cows from my grandparents in 2008. On the farm, we milk approximately 65 registered Holsteins and farm about 350 acres of corn, soybeans and alfalfa. We have a primarily closed herd, but my grandpa has bought a few cows over the last ten years to add to our show herd. Our operation includes a tie stall barn, and the cows also have access to a free stall barn.

for the Dairy Industry summer to dairy judging through 4-H. When I reached 7th grade, I knew I wanted to be involved in the Dairy Cattle Evaluation CDE in FFA. Both 4-H and FFA dairy judging has brought me many successes. When I was a junior in high school my team won the state 4-H dairy judging contest. We went on to place 4th at World Dairy Expo. I also made it onto the 4-H composite team my senior year of high school. I placed 13th individually and was a part of the 3rd place reasons and 1st place overall team at the North American International Livestock Exposition. In FFA, I competed at the All-American Dairy Judging Contest. My team was 1st in reasons and overall, and I placed 2nd overall and 4th in reasons. The same team and I also made it to the National FFA Dairy Evaluation Contest. We placed 1st in the management portion and 2nd overall. I was 9th individually in this contest. Because of our success at this contest, I was able to travel to Scotland, Ireland and England as a part of the International Dairy Judging Team. These opportunities would have been missed if I would not have committed myself to improving my skills as a judge. Participating in these contests was a dream come true, and I am lucky my mom was the one who helped me become the judge I am today.

Reaching a Life-long Goal

When I reached my senior year of high school, I was able to serve as a Fillmore County Dairy Princess for two years. During this time, I also fulfilled one of my life-long goals when I was selected as one of the twelve finalists for Princess Kay of the Milky Way. This program selects the top 12 women from around the state of Minnesota to compete for the title of Princess Kay of the Milky Way, the goodwill ambassador for the dairy industry. Because of this opportunity, my likeness was sculpted out of a 90-pound block of butter at the Minnesota State Fair. I loved being a dairy princess because I had more opportunities to represent the dairy industry at events and inform consumers about the dairy foods they consume. I gained more confidence through speaking to people I did not know, and I was able to spread the positive benefits that dairy products offer.

MJHA Forms Life-long Friendships

I knew that some of my 4-H friends attended the Minnesota Junior Holstein Convention so I decided I wanted to as well. I have now been attending this convention every year since I was 11 years old. I credit

the association for helping me step out of my comfort zone and meet new friends. Today, two of my best friends are the people I met at convention. When I was younger, I looked up to the people on the junior board because they made me feel included and were fun to be around. I knew that when I was older, I wanted to be that role model to the younger kids. I have been serving on At the age of two Kayla and her sister Haely wore the Junior Board for three years matching cow-print outfits for their first dairy show. now and my positions have included secretary, reporter, and I am currently serving as historian.    MJHA has given me other opportunities outside of convention. I have been awarded multiple scholarships, and I have been able to attend and compete at the National Holstein Convention. In addition, I have lead fitting, showmanship and washing workshops for juniors. My involvement has also provided me the opportunity to exhibit at the Midwest Fall National Show. Although my time as a junior is coming to a close, I will cherish the memories, opportunities and skills I have gained from being involved in such a rewarding organization.

Looking to the Future

Currently, I am still pursuing my love for dairy judging by competing on the University of Minnesota dairy judging team. I have participated at the Accelerated Genetics Intercollegiate Dairy Judging contest where I placed 10th individually in oral reasons. I was also on the team that participated at the All-American Dairy Show. I took home 8th place overall honors, and our team placed 2nd overall. I am grateful to be continuing on the dairy judging tradition as both of my parents were on the University of Minnesota dairy judging team when they were in college. I am also actively involved in the Gopher Dairy Club. In the summer, I serve as a Gopher Dairy Camp counselor where I am able to interact with over 80 youth who love the dairy industry as much as I do.   After graduating from the University of Minnesota, I hope to have a career in agricultural communications or journalism. Last summer, I worked for the Midwest Dairy Association and saw firsthand how the check-off program influences dairy farmers. This experience made me realize I want to work with and represent dairy farmers in any way that I can. My dream job would consist of being a part of a communications team in the dairy industry because it has given me so much. Later on, I hope to go back to the farm to raise my family surrounded by agriculture because it means a lot to me, and I want to share that with the next generation. I am blessed to be a part of this close-knit community, and I can’t wait to see what my future in the dairy industry looks like.

Kayla is thankful for the many doors being involved in 4-H opened for her including winning the Minnesota 4-H Dairy Showcase in 2015.

Memories Shaped My Holstein Story By McKenzie Swanson, Minnesota’s YDJM

S

ometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory. -Dr. Seuss   Memories have been made for generations in our family, made on the farm and in the barn. I’m a fifth-generation dairy farmer from Hutchinson, Minn. My passion for Holsteins has been handed down from generation to generation. My great great-grandparents started the love of cows back in the late 1800’s and it’s still going strong today. My memories started on my grandparents’, LeRoy and Susan Kurth’s farm, which was family oriented. We spent a lot of time together. Swinging in the ally, riding bikes, playing with the kittens, riding in the tractor with grandpa, helping grandma mix feed, playing with my cousins and feeding calves with my mom are some of my favorite memories. Living on a farm has taught me valuable lessons, such as the importance of traditions, the circle of life, and responsibility.

A New Chapter Begins With 3 Sisters Dairy

My grandparents recently retired, which started a new phase in my life. My sisters, Sierra, Shelby and I started our own small herd of cows and named our farm “3 Sisters Dairy”. Currently our cows call KurthKine Holsteins in Cosmos, Minn., home. We house our animals there and help when needed. When we are done with schooling, we hope to grow our herd. In the meantime, we continue to enjoy our dairy activities and working on the farm. One of my favorite things on the farm is anticipating the arrival of a new baby calf, especially if it is a potential show calf. It’s such a thrill to witness your future herd grow and change.

Hooked On MJHA From Early Age

I became a Junior Holstein member at a very young age. When I was five years old I showed in the novice calf class, with my calf named McKenzie, at my first MN State Holstein Show in Owatonna, after which I was hooked! I attended my first MN Holstein Convention in 2010 and competed in the dairy bowl competition and have been participating ever since. Each year I enjoy the jeopardy, dairy quiz bowl and speech competitions. Two years ago, I was honored as the Star Junior Member and last year I was honored with the Dale Mackenthun Memorial award. I have had the opportunity to travel and participate in several of the National Holstein Convention competitions. The time spent traveling, site seeing, and making new friends is very fun, exciting, rewarding and memorable.   McLeod County Holstein Club held the Minnesota Holstein Show this past summer and our Junior Holstein club helped host the event. We spent a lot of time planning for the big week to make it fun and enjoyable for the Juniors. A highlight for me was winning Reserve Junior Showmanship at the junior show. Memories have also been made going all over the state to different Holstein events like the farm field day, sales, workshops and dairy shows with Pictured above is five-year-old McKenzie my family. and her first show heifer also named “McKenzie”.

MARCH 2018

Making Memories with Other Dairy Activities

Many more moments spent in 4-H and other dairy activities create memories that will never be forgotten! I absolutely love going to dairy judging contests to see my friends that I have made over the past years. It has been an honor to be one of the top ten dairy judging individuals twice in the last three years at the Minnesota 4-H State Fair Competition. I am also making memories in 4-H dairy quiz bowl where we practice once a week and have team bonding. Another dream of mine is to become a dairy princess. I am starting down this path as I’ve been an ambassador for three years, assisting the county princesses with classroom visits, going to parades, dairy celebrations, visiting nursing homes, serving cheese and crackers and passing out ribbons at the fair.

A Passion For Showing Passed Down From Family

Showing cows is a passion of mine which has been passed down from my family. I love halter training, getting the cows ready and fitting and grooming them. The work and excitement keep me motivated all year round. Someday I hope to show on the colored shavings at the World Dairy Expo. Each year my family attends World Dairy Expo. It is a tradition to take a picture by the big globe, eat grilled cheese sandwiches, get there early to get a good seat, visit exhibits, find friends and watch the shows. The colored shavings, quality of cattle and the crowd cheering for champions (especially the year “Thomas” from MN won) has me dreaming of Pictured above is McKenzie with Willows-Edge Abil Moonshine which she received Reserved showing there one day.

Choosing My Future

Senior Showman and second place Spring Junior Yearling with in the Minnesota State Junior Holstein Show in 2017.

My motto for my Future Plans and Career Goals is: Destiny is not a matter of chance it is a matter of choice-it is not a thing to be waited for it is to be achieved! Currently I am a sophomore at Hutchinson High School, and I take every opportunity to take as many ag classes possible to achieve my goals. Ag classes also allow me to be a FFA member. I really enjoy promoting FFA. My chapter is active and involved in the school and community. We put on a petting zoo for the 1st graders, farm safety days for the 3rd graders, helped with the farm city breakfast and dairy judging. This taught me that the agriculture industry is huge and has many professional possibilities. Dairy and agriculture are a big part of my life, I want to attend a fouryear college and obtain a degree as an agricultural teacher. I want to be engaged in this industry because I care about it, and I love it. I am eager to see what my destiny is. If it includes dairy and agriculture, I will be happy!   I am lucky to have grown up on a farm and take these memories with me wherever I end up in life. The value of each moment living and working in the dairy industry have become memories that can’t be replaced! 15

Tang Named 2017 Illinois Holstein of the Year

Miss Pottsdale Dfi Tang-Red EX-92 3-05 337d 34,539m 4.3% 1492f 3.1% 1072 Gary Janssen of Golden Oaks Farm was presented with the 2017 Illinois Holstein of the Year award from Illinois Holstein President Ed Smith and Holstein Association USA President Boyd Schaufelberger

The Illinois Holstein Association continued the Illinois Holstein of the Year contest that recognized an animal that had great success in 2017. This contest accepted nominations and results were based on votes from the Illinois Holstein Association’s Facebook page. Receiving the 2017 Illinois Holstein of the Year award was Miss Pottsdale Dfi Tang-Red EX-92. Tang, sired by Defiant, is a daughter of

AL-N-Tine Debonair Tart-ET EX-92. She had an incredible year in the show ring in 2017! She was named the Unanimous All-American Red & White Senior 3-Year-Old. Her show winnings last year included: 1st Senior 3-Year-Old & Intermediate Champion of both the Red & White and Black & White shows at the Midwest Spring National, 1st Senior 3-Year-Old at the Illinois Championship Show and 1st Senior 3-Year-Old and Reserve Intermediate Champion at the International Red & White Show at World Dairy Expo. Congratulations to the owners of Tang, Golden Oaks Farm!

Bovre Receives 2017 Distinguished Service Award

Webster’s Dictionary defines service as the work performed by one that contributes to the welfare of others. This year’s Service Award winner has been actively involved in the Illinois Holstein Association for over 50 years. She began showing calves at the local shows and county fairs and found a fondness of the breed that has lasted a lifetime. In fact, you could say she lives and breathes the Holstein cow. From fitting clinics to employing youth, to serving as an official judge at a 4-H judging contest or writing questions for dairy bowl, she and her husband have been incredible mentors to youth while promoting the Registered Holstein breed. This Service Award winner was born and raised in Illinois. She attended the University of Illinois for a brief time, and even after leaving Illinois has been actively involved in the Illinois Holstein Association and a golden paid membership affiliate. She has donated countless hours to maintain the success of our State Holstein show as co-chairman and has assisted the Junior Show chairman for the past 3 years. Paula Bovre, our Service Award winner owns Great Northern Land and Cattle Company with her husband Rick for over 35 years and has managed over 850 sales. Paula is an agent for Merle Howard Insurance Agency that specializes in Livestock mortality. She has served as a World Dairy Expo Board director since 2012 and the International Junior Holstein Show Superintendent at World Dairy Expo from its inception in 2004. It is with great appreciation we acknowledge the numerous hours given to our organization as we present Paula Bovre with the 2017 Illinois Holstein Service Award. 20 - MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Spring 2018

Erbsen Awarded Senior Breeder Award

IL Holstein Senior Breeder Award Recipient Kevin Erbsen Pictured L-R: Illinois Holstein Association President Ed Smith, Delana Erbsen, Wendy Erbsen, Kevin Erbsen, Holstein Association USA President Boyd Schaufelberger, Sarah Butler, Payton Erbsen

This year’s Senior Breeder Award is known as a modest man of few words that possesses a great passion and unmatched work ethic. He has built a foundation herd breeding exceptional registered Holsteins with an emphasis on high type cow families. He is a successful longtime breeder that doesn’t follow the changing norm of the industry, but breeds for cattle he likes to look at as he milks. His standard has a proven reputation at the local and state level. His ability to see good cattle furnished him with a few judging trophies and a National DJM award. He has an extraordinary ability to remember good cows and their pedigrees. Starting out in the show ring was difficult as he didn’t immediately stand at the top, but after 30 years of breeding, he has champions at the state show, numerous Jr. AllAmerican nominations and bred a 2x All-American bull. This Senior Breeder is involved in his community by serving on the local insurance, Holstein and DHIA boards. In addition, he assists the local judging teams and has provided animals for the local judging contest for more than 25 years. Since the inception of the registered herd, which he has lead since 1994, there have been 165 Excellent cows, 340 Very Good cows, 20 Gold Metal Dams and 25 Dams of Merit. The farm has been named Premier Breeder at the Illinois Championship Holstein show more than 20 times along with receiving the Progressive Breeders Registry Award 28 times, possibly the most of any Illinois herd. The farm has had 20 Illinois Futurity winners, and is currently ranked 25th in the nation with a BAA of 112.6%. This Senior Breeder has devoted his entire life to the farm and has shared this passion with his wife of 20 years and two children. He is no stranger to the blue ribbon, but rarely is seen in the show ring or in front of an audience. Congratulations to this year’s Senior Breeder, Kevin Erbsen!

Carter Recognized with Junior Breeder Award Our Junior Breeder discovered a love for high genetic animals from his family, as they are no strangers to high-end cow breeding. He began showing and was determined to develop outstanding quality. His type herd and breeding really took off with the purchase of Mohrfield Supra Precious who has garnered a number of awards on the colored shavings in her own right. Our Junior Breeder has done a phenomenal job mating bredleading sires to Precious to develop many offspring that have gone on to make the Carters-Corner prefix synonymous with great breeding and outstanding quality homebred genetics. Our 2017 Junior Breeder is Tyler Carter! Tyler’s youth and great eye for cattle will continue to grow through the years, and it will be fun to watch the kind of cattle to come from Carters-Corner. Tyler is a graduate of Greenville High School and attended Kaskaskia College majoring in Dairy Science. During his time at Kaskaskia, he was a member of the KC Ag Club and KC Dairy Judging Team. Tyler’s collegiate judging career was highlighted by being named All-American at World Dairy Expo in 2011 finishing 8th and 3rd at NAILE. Congratulations to Tyler, our 2017 Junior Breeder! IL Holstein Junior Breeder Award Recipient Tyler Carter Presented by Holstein Association USA President Boyd Schaufelberger

2018 Wisconsin Holstein Barn Meetings How can technology fit into management of your Registered Holstein farm? The Wisconsin Holstein Association invites all members and area dairy farmers to the 2018 Barn Meetings. We have two farms serving as hosts, and while they are very different in size and scope, both operations are utilizing new technologies to achieve herd goals and improvement management of their dairy. If you are considering adding a robotic milking system, automatic calf feeders, or any other tecnological advancement, we encourage your to attend one of these barn meetings and learn first hand how it can help you achieve your goals. The schedule for the barn meetings are: Thursday, March 22 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Village View Farm, Argyle (Green/Lafayette County) Kevin & RaeAnn Makos family 1295 County Rd. C, Argyle, Wis. • 608-214-9682 Directions: Take Highway 81 east of Argyle to County C, left on County C to the first farm on the right. Tuesday, March 27 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Alfalawn Farm, Menomonie (Dunn County) Randy, David & Dale Styer families E2850 St. Rd. 72, Menomonie, Wis. • 715-505-8161 Dave’s cell Directions: From Menomonie take highway 25 south to Downsville then go west 4.5 miles on State Highway 72. The dairy is on the south side and the heifer set-up is on the north side. All barn meetings are open to any interested Holstein breeder. For more information on the barn meetings please call the Wisconsin Holstein Association or the host farm.

Village View Farm Kevin & RaeAnn Makos family Kevin and RaeAnn Makos and their sons, Cole and Kory, will be hosting a Barn Meeting on Thursday, March 22 at their Village View Farm near Argyle. The Makos family has been milking their 75-cow Registered Holstein herd with a Lely Astronaut robotic milker since 2014. The current rolling herd average is 27,936 3.9 1078 3.1 971. They also crop 275 acres and feed out all of their bull calves as steers. Village View Farm was started in 1963 by Kevin’s parents, Martin and Barb Makos. The Makos family has owned Registered Holsteins for 45 years and have had a closed herd since 1993. Kevin and RaeAnn moved to the family farm after they were married in 1997 and began buying some of the cattle in 2001. By 2012 they had purchased the farm and were milking between 75-80 cows. Today, Kevin and RaeAnn handle the milking herd while Cole and Kory help with raising the youngstock. Martin also still helps with mixing feed and crops. Kevin makes all of his own breeding decisions and states, “I have always tried breeding for the complete cow. I don’t really like ugly cows!” But he also realizes they need to produce enough to pay the bills. He likes using bulls that offer both type and production and very seldom uses bulls less than +2.00 on Type. He also looks for bulls that are at least +500 on milk and positive on components. Kevin uses mostly proven bulls and is currently using Kingboy, Yoder, Pety and Kingpin, but also uses a few genomic young sires including Doppler, King Royal and Diamondback. Some of the best young cows in the herd are sired by Atwood and Gold Chip and there are several Bradnick daughters that are fresh and look great. While the Makos family has made many changes over the years, the real game changer came in 2014 when they built a new freestall barn 42 - MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Spring 2018

and began milking with the Lely Astronaut robotic milker. With their sons getting older and becoming more involved in activities, they had initially begun looking at robotic milkers back in 2010 and visited several farms that used the system. After seeing how other operations were run, they believed this was the way to go for their family farm. Each cow wears a transponder which is read each time the cow walks into the stall. The robot identifies the cow and reads where the cow is positioned in order to attach the milker. The computer also sends a message to Kevin’s phone if something has gone wrong or if a cow has not been milked recently. “The information the robot provides and keeps track of is unbelievable,” Kevin says. “From daily production to rumination to finding cows in heat through activity monitoring, we know our cows better than we ever thought possible.” The Makos family encourages everyone to join them for the barn meeting on March 27 to see how a robotic milking system can work for a small farm. Kevin and RaeAnn both agree that the addition of the robot was a great change for their family, allowing them to attend the boys’ games and activities regularly and it also freed up more time for other farm chores and crop work. Kevin stated, “We would love to have you come see the future of milking cows for small farms that don’t want to hire help but still love their cows!” Village View Farm is located at 1295 County Road C, Argyle. Along with being able to view the Lely Astronaut system in use, visitors will be able to view the herd and enjoy lunch.

Alfalawn Farms Randy, David & Dale Styer families The second barn meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 27 at Alfalawn Farm near Menomonie, Wis. The Styer families invite you to visit their farm and see the technological improvements they’ve made over the years that are helping with management of their dairy. Alfalawn Farm has had Registered Holsteins for over 40 years and is currently milking around 2000 cows that are averaging 83 pounds of milk on 3x/day milking. The rolling herd average is a little over 26,500 milk with 1058 pounds of fat and 847 pounds protein. Cows are milked in a 60-stall DeLaval rotary parlor and the herd maintains a cell count of around 80,000-90,000. All heifers are raised on site, utilizing robotic calf feeders for the first two months of age. After weaning, they are in group pens through five months of age and then moved to a freestall set-up until about 4-6 weeks pre-calving. The family raises some steers and has a variety of other livestock as well. Things have changed quite a bit over the last 15-20 years at Alfalawn Farm. Any improvements that were done were with the goal to try to become more efficient. They are always looking for ways to be better at what they do. The farm has added everything from GPS on the crop side to the rotary parlor with automated pre- and postdippers on the dairy side. A sand separation system was added which recycles 98% of the sand from the dairy. Milk weights are captured at each milking and the addition of the robotic feeders for the calves was a great addition for young calf management. Alfalawn Farm is owned by brothers Randy, David and Dale Styer. A true family operation, members from all three families help with the day-to-day management of the dairy. Randy manages the crops and youngstock. His friend Heather works with the young calves while Randy’s children Gavin and Brittney help with crops and youngstock. Gavin also has his own custom chopping business. Their youngest daughter Chloe helps with the young calves as well. David and his wife Karen work with the cows and manage the

2018 Barn Meeting info_Layout 1 2/19/18 8:25 PM Page 2

sandroom where the sand separation takes place. David also takes care of the farm’s financials. Their sons Ben and Brian help in the calf barn and work with the pigs, chickens and show heifers. Daughter Sarah is currently in her first year at med school at UW-Madison while Krista is currently attending college at the University of Minnesota where she is president of the Gopher Dairy Club and a member of the Dairy Judging Team. Dale manages the steers, hauls cattle and has night-time sandroom duty. His son Kade is in charge of the farm’s IT work including cameras, internet connections and sound systems, and also helps with the baby bull calves. Another son Reed handles the goats and helps with the steers, while stepson Zach works in the older heifer barn and helps with the steers and hauling cattle. Deric Wolf has been herdsman at Alfalawn Farm for 16 years and is also part owner of Pure Pride Show Cattle with Jim Gilgenbach. The Styer family is happy to see the success that Deric and Jim have had with their show cattle. Alfalawn strives to breed for cows that are going to have longevity

while milking well with high components. They look for cows with moderate stature, front end strength, balanced udders with correct teat placement, and extremely good feet and legs. Their true type cow is a cow that is going to stay in the herd for a long period of time while doing what she does best - milking, breeding back easily, and remaining trouble free. The Alfalawn team also likes to work with good cow families with a proven history. Bulls are selected for the traits that are most important to meet their breeding goals. First by selecting from strong cow families, while also looking at milk, fat, protein, somatic cell count, type and Net Merit dollars, all the while maintaining an emphasis on DPR. The Styers enjoy hosting tours and having other educational events on their farm. Dave says, “We strongly believe that we all have an obligation to promote our industry and to do what we can to close the educational gap that we have with the public. We know we don’t have all the answers, but are trying to improve every day and share our story good and bad along the way.”

HIGH-RANKING BAA% HERDS FROM MINNESOTA AND SOUTH DAKOTA

I

n early January, Holstein Association USA released the lists of the top Holstein Breed Age Average (BAA%) herds for 2017 classifications. A number of herds from Minnesota and South Dakota ranked in the list of Overall Top 200 BAA Herds for 2017.   The top herd from Minnesota was Esperanza Cattle Co. with a rank of 16 overall on the list and a rank of six on the list for Herds of 10 to 25 Cows. They recorded a BAA of 113 with 13 cows. Esperanza Cattle Co. is owned by Jay and Barb Morrison and located near Peterson, Minn. Willolea Holsteins of Underwood, Minn., came in the 19th spot with a BAA of 112.6 for 36 cows and a rank of 9 on the list for Herds of 26 to 50 cows. Several herds from Minnesota and South Dakota made the top 200 list and respective lists for herd size. Minnesota Holstein Association would like to congratulate all of these herds for this achievement.   The tables at right show the appearance of Minnesota and South Dakota Herds on the Top 200 List and lists based on herd size. To see the lists with all states included and also a ranking by region, visit: www.holsteinusa. com.   Holstein Breed Age Average (BAA%) value provides a way to compare the score of an animal (and herd average) to the average of the breed, taking into account age of the animal and stage of lactation. All animals receive an individual BAA value on the herd classification report, and herds participating in the Classic or Standard options of the Holstein Classification program receive an overall BAA for the herd.   In 2017, 1,303 herds had a BAA value eligible for inclusion in these lists. The average number of cows included in the BAA calculation for the entire group was 64, and the average BAA% was 106.5.   For the purposes of these lists, if a herd classified twice in a year (between 1/1/2017 and 12/31/2017) and received an official herd BAA for both classifications, only the most recent BAA was used. To appear on these lists, a herd must have at least 10 cows included in the BAA calculation.

Michigan At A Glance Explore the Shore at National Holstein Convention

Traverse City, MI -- Make plans to join Holstein enthusiasts from coast to coast in Traverse City, Michigan for the 2018 National Holstein Convention on June 29th -July 3rd. Sun, sand, sailing and a great cattle sale are just a few of the fun adventures that await attendees this year as they explore the Michigan shoreline and everything Michigan has to offer. Cars may be king in Michigan, but agriculture is the crowned prince as the second largest industry in Michigan. In addition, the Great Lakes State is second only to California in diversity of agricultural crops produced in the nation. Everyone will be descending on the Cherry Capital of the world to enjoy the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa. Golf, tennis, swimming and relaxing in a spa are all options available at the resort. The Host Day Farm Tours will include four dairies that are unique in their operation. Hidden Hills Dairy, Yonkman’s Dairy, Bosscher Dairy and Ber-Sher Dairy will be the featured farms in addition to a Michigan Holstein Breeder’s Showcase where breeders from around the state will send one of the outstanding individuals to be on display for convention goers. In addition, a tour to Mackinac Island, charter boat fishing, wine tasting, tall ship sailing and climbing the sand dunes are just a few of the activities included on a full tour schedule. The Juniors will enjoy a Cows to Careers event where they can glean information about the careers available and mingle with professionals in the industry. A Holstein Block

party will encompass family fun night where contests, tournaments, food and fun will fill Sunday evening, July 1st, at the resort. The convention sale will be held on

Monday, July 2nd in the hotel ballroom with the cattle housed on the resort grounds. David Rama and Daniel Brandt along with the convention sale committee are lining up an outstanding offering of cattle fit for the National Convention Sale. As the Michigan Holstein Association finalizes their plans for this annual event, you can prepare as well by making your hotel reservations at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa. Rooms have been filling up quickly, so we advise you contact the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa at 800.236.1577 to make your room reservations. Ask for Holstein Association Room Rate - promocode NHC0618. Rates are available until June 1, 2018 - Subject to availability For complete details, updates and news about the convention visit www.michiganholstein.com and follow us on Facebook at the 2018 National Holstein Convention in Michigan. And we will see you this summer on the shore!

Michigan Juniors Plan a Unique National Convention Experience By Kristen Burkhardt The 2018 National Holstein Convention is quickly approaching us! Michigan is excited to be able to host such a prestigious event. The Michigan Junior Holstein Association (MJHA) has been gearing up to welcome youth from all over the United States to our very own home. And we are doing our best to make this a unique convention for all Juniors. First off, I would like to highlight how special our location is to the convention. The Grand Traverse Resort and Spa is located in a scenic area highlighted by Lake Michigan. Because of the hotel location, most of the convention events are either at the hotel or very close by. We will be hosting the first ever “Cows to Careers” on Monday, July 2nd. This event will tie in a career fair in a talk show format! This 60 minute talk show will address important topics such as dressing for success, working with millennials, social media presence, how to make the most of a ride-along, and interviewing tips. After the conclusion of the talk show, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm, juniors will be able to walk around the career fair and interact with industry professionals. Youth of

all ages are encouraged to bring their resume to see what schools and dairy industry jobs are represented at this career fair. Our unique convention continues with a float down the river to the Sleeping Bear Dunes, highlighter junior mixer, and the sale location. Many states may have mountains or long beaches, but we have gigantic sand hills called dunes that you can climb or run down to get to the water. Not to mention, one of Michiganders favorite activities during the summer includes tying multiple tubes together and floating down a river. Also, the junior mixer will have a twist to it this year. Instead of having a regular dance, each junior will receive a white shirt and highlighter to see how many youth from other states they can get to sign their shirt! Lastly, the sale location will be right at the hotel. This means that juniors can decide between the sale or our hospitality option or both. There will be a pool party right at the hotel for the juniors so they can attend the sale and then enjoy the pool! Michigan is eager to host the 2018 National Holstein Convention! We hope to see you there for a week full of fun, networking, and the best unlimited dairy bar yet! MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Spring 2018 - 33

THANK YOU!

MHA Corporate Sponsorship Program The Minnesota Holstein Association (MHA) was organized in 1910 for the purpose of improving and promoting the Holstein breed of dairy cattle. The MHA consists of 950 members and is open to all people interested in the dairy industry. The mission of the Minnesota Holstein Association is, "To enhance the lives and profitability of all dairy producers and enthusiasts by providing opportunities for education, marketing, recognition and socialization." As dedicated supporters of local registered Holstein dairy farmers, businesses have the opportunity to join and support the Minnesota Holstein Association through our Corporate Sponsor Program. This program has five levels of sponsorship: Grand Supreme Champion, Supreme Champion, Grand Champion and Honorable Mention. Each level includes recognition as a dedicated sponsor of the Minnesota Holstein Association. As a corporate sponsor for our association, businesses help the Minnesota Holstein Association provide opportunities for dairy producers across the state. If you and your business are interested in becoming a corporate sponsor or if you do business with a company you feel would benefit from becoming a corporate sponsor please visit the Minnesota Holstein website and print off a corporate sponsorship program agreement and flyer. Once completed the agreement and payment can be sent to the MHA office. A percentage of the sponsorship is given back to the local clubs along with their rebates in May. If you have questions or would like to know more about the program, please contact a MHA board member or the MHA office. Your assistance in helping our organization grow is greatly appreciated. THANK YOU!

LONGTIME CORPORATE SPONSORS A Special Thank You to our long time Corporate Sponsors. The following businesses have been MHA Corporate Sponsors since the program began in 2007. The Minnesota Holstein Association greatly appreciates your continued support.
