Dairy cattle judging is strong at the University of Minnesota, so strong that its teams have placed 1st overall in 12 of the 24 contests across the past 8 contests held at the All-American Dairy Show (Harrisburg, PA), the North American International Livestock Exposition (Louisville, KY), and World Dairy Expo (Madison, WI).

Also, the University of Minnesota has placed 1st or 2nd overall in 23 of the 36 contests across the past 12 held at these 3 locations. No other university comes close to this incredible record of success. In 2022, the University of Minnesota was 1st overall in both the All American (Harrisburg, PA) and the NAILE (Louisville, KY) collegiate contests.

If you want a career in the dairy industry, consider the University of Minnesota. In addition to participating in our highly successful dairy judging and dairy challenge programs, you can join the Gopher Dairy Club, whose student members gain experience and industry contacts through many activities such as an all-expense-paid 10-day senior trip to California in January. Both inside and outside the classroom, our dairy professors make teaching and working with students their top priority.

FROM THE MHA STAFF

Greetings from the MHA staff!

It’s hard to believe December is here already! As we write this, Thanksgiving has just passed, and we can’t help but reflect on a few things we as staff are thankful for this year. First, you, the membership, for your continued excitement, support, and passion for this association. The board, for their hard work on all MHA activities and events, and of course to the Holstein cow, who created this wonderful community and continues to provide delicious dairy products.

The year of 2022 has been particularly busy as we once again had a full calendar of events, including the 2022 National Holstein Convention. We are grateful to have hosted a successful national convention, attended State Show in Perham, and run two online sales in the past 12 months.

In this publication, you will find details and information about the many upcoming events in 2023. Please pay attention to the dates and deadlines listed. If any changes arise, we will alert you as soon as possible.

As always, we would like to thank the corporate sponsors of the Minnesota Holstein Association. You can see a listing of our corporate sponsors on the back inside cover. As we go into a new year, it is a great time to educate companies about this program. Contact the MHA office if you would like materials to share with a potential corporate sponsor in your area. We also want to share a sincere thank you to all of the breeders, universities, clubs and businesses that chose to advertise in this year’s publications. Your support makes this publication possible.

Amanda is wrapping up her fifth year with MHA and continues to enjoy serving the membership. As her photography business continues to grow, Brooke has made the decision to transition away from her role with the MHA and devote her full-time efforts towards her business. She wishes all the best to the MHA membership and thanks them for their kindness and friendship during her time with the association.

We wish everyone a blessed holiday season and prosperous new year. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions. Amanda can be reached at minnesotaholstein@gmail.com or by phone at (320)259-0637.

From

the MHA

President: Randy Gross

Greetings MHA membership and friends,

As we move into the Holiday season, many of us can appreciate what has been, by and large, a really nice fall for getting field work done and other projects wrapped up before winter settles in.

I hope that however your fall went, you are able to take time with family and friends to celebrate this Christmas.

It was great to attend World Dairy Expo this year with events fully “back to normal” with the absolute best cows in the world. It was even better to see members and breeders from Minnesota and South Dakota well represented in the Holstein shows, both junior and open. Congratulations are in order for the University of Minnesota dairy cattle judging team, which placed 6th at WDE, and once again won the contest at the NAILE in Louisville, KY. What the U of M team has done over the last several years at NAILE is very impressive.

We just completed our MHA online fall sale. This is something that we are working to develop so that MHA can provide a consistent avenue for our membership to market their Holstein genetics and/ or surplus cattle. Going forward, it would be good for our membership to have this grow into something people regularly have on their calendars, much like the live cattle spring and fall sales used to be.

The MHA Breeder’s Seminar will be offered again in late January/early February and will feature Jordan Siemers of Select Sires and Siemers Holsteins. As in years past, the presentation will occur at a variety of locations throughout MN and SD to make it as accessible to as many Holstein enthusiasts as possible. Please check the MHA website for the most up-to-date information. Also, watch the website for information regarding the PDCA All Breeds Convention, which will be hosted by the MN Ayrshire Breeders Association and MN PDCA in Red Wing, Minnesota, March 3-4, 2023.

And now I would like to say thank you to our departing MHA Marketing Manager Brooke Bobendrier. While Brooke has only been with us for the last year, she has likely done more than a year’s worth of work considering the amount of time put into preparing the promotions and publications for Progress on the Plains this last June. Best wishes Brooke as you continue to grow your photography and design business!

On a final note, I would like to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year. And, as always, if you have any questions or concerns regarding MHA, please feel free to contact me at (605) 864-1422 or randy-ashgrove@itctel.com.

Merry Christmas, Randy Gross, MHA President

Hello again everyone!

Congratulations to all of the members who participated in the Midwest Fall National Show and World Dairy Expo! It was cool to see so many of our members find success, and I hope everyone had a great show season.

I am looking forward to seeing the events we have planned for the coming months take place. I would like to welcome you all to the 2023 MJHA All-Breeds Convention, which will be held on

March 17-19, 2023, in Rochester, Minn. The board is working hard to introduce new ideas for convention, and it promises to be a lot of fun.

I would also encourage you all to take a look at the DJM and YDJM applications, as well as the awards and scholarships that are now available to our members. We encourage you to apply, attend convention and get involved in 2023!

Taking Dairy Digital

In today’s digital world, we have more access to technology and social platforms than before.

When used effectively, social media is a great tool that allows farmers to share their stories with others. It can be used to create long-lasting relationships and build a better understanding between farmers and consumers. However, knowing where to start and taking the first step to using social media can be a daunting task. It is best to share what you are passionate about and share moments from your day-to-day life. People are drawn to authenticity and transparency and are genuinely interested in learning more about what farmers do. Everyone’s story looks different, and these four individuals each have their own way of utilizing social media to shine a positive light on dairy farming.

heifers at her house. These opportunities helped spark her love for dairy cattle. She was involved in many dairy organizations throughout her college career and chose to pursue veterinary medicine. Lindsey graduated from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine with a dairy focus in 2015.

She spent five years doing private dairy practice before becoming a Calf & Heifer Specialist with Ag Partners. Lindsey also manages calves and does all of the veterinary work on her husband’s family dairy farm, Borst Family Dairy. As a Holstein enthusiast, Lindsey also stays busy with a few show heifers and cows.

Lindsey believes in the power of people telling the correct story of animal agriculture, so she decided to begin sharing their dairy farm on social media. She said, “If we are transparent and explain why we do what we do, I think it builds more trust with consumers. Hopefully that trust results in more people consuming more dairy and continuing to build our dairy industry.”

Lindsey did not grow up on a dairy farm but has always been a dairy enthusiast. As a kid, she rode along to veterinarian calls at dairy farms with her mom and raised 4-H dairy

Lindsey shares a variety of posts on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok that capture the everyday things that happen on their farm. These everyday happenings that dairy farmers may not find interesting are fascinating to consumers, even if it is just a picture of a newborn calf or a video of the farm. Lindsey notes that her videos get the most attention so she has been focusing on making

educational videos of everyday life on the farm to share with everyone. Some of her post topics include how milk gets from cows to the grocery store, what cows and calves eat, what colostrum is and why it’s important, and things they do to keep animals comfortable in heat and cold stress. Lindsey wants consumers to know that farmers work hard to ensure their animals are comfortable and that the food they are producing is safe. “I also want them to know that if they have questions, to ask a farmer! With social media, this is easier than ever to do.”

In addition to social media, Lindsey and her husband hosted three on-the-farm events called “Moo House” last summer. They took place on Saturdays in August and included paid farm tours, yard games, an ADA ice cream trailer, and beef and produce for sale. This experience allowed people to enjoy their ice cream alongside the cows and see a dairy farm firsthand.

Lindsey commented on the fact that the majority of attendees had never been to a dairy farm and word of the event quickly spread. They had people come from big cities including Rochester and the Twin Cities to enjoy this event.

The farm tours were a huge hit and after adding additional tour times, they still had to turn people away. Lindsey reflected on the experience and the impact it had on consumers and expressed how rewarding the tour comments from consumers were.

She adds, “Some examples were ‘I had no idea cows were this well cared for’ and ‘So there aren’t antibiotics in any milk? So it’s safe for me to drink? That’s awesome.’ I’m confident we at least changed a few consumers’ minds about dairy with these events, which was the goal and makes the extra work worth it!”

Clay Carlson is the fifth generation to grow up on his family’s dairy farm. As a kid, he helped his dad with various chores and “all of the manual labor that my grandpa could think of.” Over the years, he saw their herd grow from 500 to 1,800 milking cows. He is currently attending graduate school at South Dakota State University in hopes of becoming a researcher of Animal Science with his Master’s degree.

Last year, Clay was contacted by Midwest Dairy and asked if he was interested in working with social media influencer, Jessica Jaunich. The goal was to promote dairy farming to younger generations in a modern way. Clay saw this as a “great opportunity to educate and entertain consumers.”

RIGHT: A recent Facebook video sharing information about how cover crops help keep their land healthy and more sustainable.

LEFT: A sneak peek into Lindsey’s Instagram account, featuring videos, recipes, photos and more from the dairy!

On the day of filming, they began with a tour of the farm where he was able to explain their operation to Jessica. As they walked around the farm, Jessica brainstormed ideas for the videos with Clay and the rest of the team. These videos would be shared as a series on TikTok. Clay expressed how fun it was to see her creativity come to life as she experienced the farm. For the first video, Clay and Jessica jumped on and through tires on the feeding pad. Next, they headed to the hay shed. The final video put Clay to the test. He said, “The third video involved some dancing, so my two left feet were put to the test while my family drove by on the road laughing at me. It was a lot of fun.”

Through these videos, they wanted to share that dairy farmers are dedicated to producing high-quality products and that dairy foods are a great choice for recovery after a workout. They wanted to show how dairy foods can be used to fuel your everyday wellness and are a part of a balanced diet.

Clay adds, “We also talked about how chores on the farm are their own workout. From throwing bales, covering silage piles with tires, to carrying pails of grain and water, farming is full of physically demanding tasks that promote fitness.”

These videos were important to Clay because of how many people are unfamiliar with how they get their food. He talked about how consumers think they understand, but do not truly comprehend until they visit a farm and see it firsthand.

“Educating consumers and getting producers to be more understanding is going to be a key element in farming’s continuity,” Clay says. He explains how some consumers may be embarrassed for not knowing about food production or let their pride hinder their ability to learn, but ultimately, producers play an important role in teaching them.

At the Sioux Empire Fair every year, Clay runs the dairy portion of the Pipestone Discovery Barn. He enjoys doing the milking demonstrations and calf feedings and finds talking to consumers about dairy here very rewarding. Rita is originally from Pierz, Minnesota where she was raised on a 50-cow dairy. While studying Animal Production Systems at the University of Minnesota, she met her husband, Joe. Rita and her family now reside on a farm in Worthington, Minnesota where they milk 2500 cows.

Rita began sharing her farm on social media because she wanted to create a diary for her family. Rita adds, “Moreover, I think God was nudging me to do it, because He knew how greatly I would benefit from an extremely supportive social media community when my daughter, Ava, was injured in a farm accident shortly thereafter.” She created a blog on WordPress to tell stories of the farm and shares posts from her daily life on Facebook. Through her posts, she aims to be authentic, relatable, and humorous.

When sharing messages on social media, Rita aims to show consumers that farmers do the right thing. She believes in building trust with consumers through social media. Rita said, “First, and we hear it all the time, people are seeking information about where their food comes from and, as farmers, we are the ones that have the real knowledge. Second, I am building up our ‘brand.’” With a greater understanding of what happens on a dairy farm, neighbors and community members increase their trust in farmers. For Rita, it is all about transparency and showing the daily life of a farmer.

AUSTIN RIPP

Dimock, South Dakota

TikTok: @ventureholsteins

Facebook: @ventureholsteins

Austin has had a passion for dairy from a young age. Dairy farming and showing dairy cattle have been a part of the Ripp family for several generations. Austin grew up on his small, family-owned dairy farm and has worked on the farm and showed dairy cattle since he was a kid.

On the farm, Austin loves taking videos and pictures of their cows. He decided to start a TikTok account to share these videos with others. Austin shared, “Pairing some of my knowledge of the app and editing videos with my passion for dairy cattle made it super easy for me to create videos that people liked.” After getting several views, Austin added more higher, quality content to his page and the engagement increased greatly.

Through his TikToks, Austin shares videos of their farm operation, famous show cattle, and their own show cattle. The inspiration for his famous show cattle videos came from his love of going to World Dairy Expo and watching the shows. He started by sharing videos of past champions and famous cows and expanded his content to include his own show cattle and farm.

His goal is for viewers, who are usually from the younger generation, to continue their passion for dairy and stay within the industry.

Austin said, “It’s a tough business and you have to work hard to be successful so getting the younger generation excited and passionate about the dairy industry isn’t always the easiest. I think my videos help light the fire under kids when they see these amazing cows in my hall of fame playlist and when they see some of my videos on how to judge dairy cows.”

Austin believes it is easier for young dairy advocates to stay engaged and interested in the dairy industry when they see other young dairy enthusiasts sharing that same passion. He shares that the dairy community on TikTok helps to get people involved and interested in the dairy industry.

Even if viewers do not understand how dairy farming works, they are getting dairy videos on their feed and are able to learn through them. Through his videos, Austin hopes to connect with the younger generation and get them excited to stay within the industry.

What advice do you have for farmers looking to share their stories on social media?

Lindsey: “Your pictures and videos don’t have to be perfect to post. If you start posting and get a question from a consumer that you aren’t sure how to answer, there are lots of people out there who can help you such as Midwest Dairy. If you want to post videos, a great video editing app to check out is CapCut. Just be yourself and tell your farm’s story.”

Rita: “Pick one platform. Keep it simple. Never spend more time looking at a screen than you have to, but if you must, make it useful.”

The Next Generation

Growth is a word that accurately depicts the mindset of many young members in the Minnesota Holstein Association (MHA) when they think about how they want to positively impact our organization. Our young members want to get involved, encourage their friends to become members, and improve MHA for years to come. But more often that not, it can be intimidating to join an association and become actively involved as a young person who has just transitioned from the junior association to the adult association.

There are the stories of three young, enthusiastic MHA members who have made their mark on the association in their early careers. Their ability to make a difference in large projects and smaller tasks showcases the fact that the MHA is in great hands, and that there is an opportunity for everyone to become involved in the areas of the MHA where they aer most passionate. Let’s meet some of our members!

Tyrone Aho is a current member of the West Central Area Holstein Club - serving on the board for several years. He concludes that he “has always enjoyed attending the seminars that MHA puts on, along with state sales, and shows.” Tyrone was not involved in the organization as a child but decided to get involved in the Minnesota Holstein

Association as a young adult. He is currently the Herd Manager at J&A Dairy and consigned an animal to the 2022 National Convention Sale.

He has taken an interest in more of the breeding aspect on their farm. He shares that with the progress of the Holstein bull their farm is better able to advance their herd from a genetic standpoint. Their current breeding philosophy revolves around TPI/NM$ with the end goal of producing a well uniformed herd of profitable cows. Tyrone is heavily pursuing polled genetics with his favorite bulls being Luster-P, and Bedrock-PP. One of his favorite accomplishments from breeding the Holstein cow was selling their lot on the NHC Sale with a NM$ over 1,100!

Bill and Leah Kurth own and operate Kurth-Kine Holsteins near Cosmos, MN, and are both members of the MHA. Their 150-cow registered herd is truly a family run operation. Bill and daughter Livia milk while son Larkun runs the freestall barn. Leah does the majority of the calf feeding and assists in the freestall barn when needed. As a family they run 172 acres of alfalfa, corn silage, and small grains which are all fed to their cows. They encourage their kids to get involved with the MJHA by attending conventions and the state show. Bill and Leah were named the 2022 Distinguished Young Holstein Breeders.

THE EARLY EXPERIENCES OF YOUNG ADULTS IN THE MHA MEMBERSHIP

TOP LEFT: Bill and Leah Kurth, along with their children, at the 2022 Minnesota All Breeds Convention after receiving the Minnesota Holstein Association’s 2022 Distinguished Young Holstein Breeder award.

TOP RIGHT: Tyrone Aho and his crew of helpers pose for a photo at his farm, J&A Dairy.

BOTTOM: Bernice Van Hulzen, with a favorite cow and with her son, Kroy.

One of the many ways that the Kurth’s have been involved has been by hosting the 2020 MHA Field Day, and by attending as many events as they can. They believe that the reason they are able to advance their herd of registered holsteins is through the many activities put on by the MHA. Relationships of fellow breeders and farmers are valuable to them, and they want their children to establish those same connections.

Bernice Van Hulzen started in the MJHA when she first purchased a show heifer at the State Spring Sale, from then to now she has grown immensely within both organizations. She attended junior convention, and served on the junior board. Now as an adult member she is the treasurer for the Southwest Minnesota Holstein Club and is able to help coordinate their district show. She enjoys helping the MHA Staff with the Midwest Fall National Show and state shows. This past spring Bernice was given the opportunity to help put together host tour videos for the 2022 National Holstein Convention.

Bernice is currently employed as a Calf & Heifer Specialist for Purina, helps her husband with his grain business, and still finds time to return home to her family’s dairy farm. She enjoys getting the opportunity to have a very diverse approach on being involved in dairy farms. In

the future, she is hopeful that her children can get involved in the MJHA to learn valuable life lessons and is hopeful that she will still be able to serve both the district and state organization. A fun fact about Bernice is that she officially became an American citizen in 2020, and now has dual citizenship with Canada!

How has the

MHA

made an impact on your life?

The Kurths concluded that they hope their kids will continue growing in MJHA and then transition to MHA when they age out. They hope that the MHA will continue to help them maintain and cultivate relationships with other youth and individuals that foster the same core values that they try to teach their kids.

Tyrone Aho says that the MHA has further developed his passion for the Holstein breed, and he greatly appreciates the camaraderie with other breeders.

Bernice Van Hulzen touches on the fact that she has gained friends that will last a lifetime. She has gained a better understanding and interest in the registered holstein breeds, and accumulated skills in photography, videography, and leadership. Story continues on page 22.

21 DECEMBER 2022 MINNESOTA HOLSTEIN NEWS

Tyrone is hopeful that he can continue to attend MHA sponsored events to gain more knowledge of the breed. He also values the opportunity to advertise and market J&A’s animals through publications and sales.

Bernice would like to continue serving the SW MN Holstein Club and help with the events put on by the MHA.

Bill and Leah Kurth concluded that their love for the holstein breed will always push them to be involved with the MHA. As long as their kids are willing and wanting to be involved they will continue to go to shows, conventions, and field days put on by the MHA.

The MHA is home to many great members that will continue a legacy for the organization, especially those younger members already working hard to do this.

ABOUT THE AWARDS:

Progressive Breeder’s Registry: In order to qualify for the Progressive Breeders’ Registry (PBR) award, a herd must meet the following criteria:

• Herd owner must be a member of both their national and state associations, and enrolled in the Deluxe or Premier TriStar options and Herd Classification programs.

• Percent B.A.A. for Herd Classification must be in the top 25% of herds classified during the 18-month time period just prior to March 1 of the current calendar year.

• Must have a minimum of twenty 87% RHA and higher cows in the milking herd, of which at least 75% bear the herd owner’s prefix.

Progressive Genetics Herd: In order to qualify as a Progressive Genetics Herd (PGH), a herd must qualify under the following criteria:

• Herd owner must be a member of both their national and state associations, and enrolled in the Deluxe or Premier TriStar options and Herd Classification programs.

• Must have a minimum of twenty 87% RHA and higher cows in the milking herd with CTPIs. No minimum requirement for number of young stock.

Gold Medal Dam: In order to be recognized as a Gold Medal Dam (GMD), a cow must qualify under the following criteria:

• A cow and at least three of her daughters must have been classified.

• The cow herself must be milking in a herd participating in TriStarSM service option. TriStar published records are used in the evaluation.

• Equal emphasis is placed on production and type. In addition, there is equal emphasis on progeny and dam performance. (Dam’s age adjusted final score, Dam’s average 2X 305 day ME production records, Average of daughters’ age adjusted scores, Average of daughters’ ME production records.)

• Separate cutoffs are determined by birth year of the dam. ME production will only be calculated on actual records of 270 days in length or greater for the cow and her progeny.

• If the cow, herself, does not qualify on a mature equivalent basis, she may qualify on either one of the following lifetime credits: 200,000 pounds of milk, or 7,200 pounds of fat, or 6,400 pounds of protein.

• Automatic evaluation is done twice a year for all cows 87% RHA or higher that were born in the past 25 years. The GMD award is permanent recognition.

Dam of Merit: In order to be recognized as a Dam of Merit (DOM), a cow must have a GTPI® or CTPISM exceeding year of birth cutoff and at least three offspring with a PTA for production and type; the GTPI or CTPI must be calculated using a required classification score. Automatic evaluation is done twice a year for all cows 87% RHA or higher that were born in the last 25 years and milking in a herd enrolled in one of the TriStarSM service options. The DOM award is permanent recognition.

MHA Corporate Sponsorship Program

The Minnesota Holstein Association (MHA) was organized in 1910 for the purpose of improving and promoting the Holstein breed of dairy cattle. The MHA consists of 700 members and is open to all people interested in the dairy industry. The mission of the Minnesota Holstein Association is, "To enhance the lives and profitability of all dairy producers and enthusiasts by providing opportunities for education, marketing, recognition and socialization."

As dedicated supporters of local registered Holstein dairy farmers, businesses have the opportunity to join and support the Minnesota Holstein Association through our Corporate Sponsor Program. This program has five levels of sponsorship: Grand Supreme Champion, Supreme Champion, Grand Champion and Honorable Mention. Each level includes recognition as a dedicated sponsor of the Minnesota Holstein Association. As a corporate sponsor for our association, businesses help the Minnesota Holstein Association provide opportunities for dairy producers across the state.

If you and your business are interested in becoming a corporate sponsor or if you do business with a company you feel would benefit from becoming a corporate sponsor please visit the Minnesota Holstein website and print off a corporate sponsorship program agreement and flyer. Once completed the agreement and payment can be sent to the MHA office. A percentage of the sponsorship is given back to the local clubs along with their rebates in May.

If you have questions or would like to know more about the program, please contact a MHA board member or the MHA office. Your assistance in helping our organization grow is greatly appreciated.

Thank
