From the President As many have observed, MBOTMA has been in a constant state of flux since Jed retired as Executive Director in December 2015. Jed made being on the board or on an event committee relatively easy. Jed took care of big stuff and little stuff, and most of us had no idea just how much he did.

There is no roadmap for MBOTMA’s next phase. That’s what your new board is up to: creating a knowable, doable and repeatable path in an effort to move MBOTMA into the future. We are examining what we need from paid staff, updating our technology, and improving existing revenue streams and identifying new ones. I am jazzed by the creativity and enthusiasm of the current board.

This is our community. We love the music, but it is the kind, friendly and hard-working folks that keep us engaged. Let’s build an organization that we can pass on to those brave souls who follow us. We need sustainability and innovation. To that end, we need you to step up even more than you now do: offer new ideas, recruit new members; attend and invite your family and friends to attend MBOTMA events; donate your time, expertise and money.

It was well attended and I heard it was a really good time. It’s impossible to thank all of the volunteers who are the life blood of this organization. That said, I’d like to thank Rick Anderson who has been the chair of the Winter Bluegrass Weekend committee for several years and Jana Metge for kindly taking on that role. Thanks to Shane Zack and Rina Rossi who presented and facilitated, respectively, at the board retreat. Plan Ahead for Tickets: Kickoff Festival and Minnesota Bluegrass & Old-Time Music Festival Don’t wait to purchase advance festival tickets until it is too late! There are some changes coming to the final dates when you can purchase advance tickets to MBOTMA events. You may have noticed this year that advance Winter Bluegrass Weekend tickets were only available over the phone, by mail or PayPal until Tuesday at 5pm before the festival (though you could still purchase at Homestead until the day before) and it may be even earlier next year with the same cutoff for Homestead.

This year advance tickets for the Homegrown Kickoff are available until two weeks before the festival on Friday, May 19th at 5pm. This includes sales

at Homestead Pickin’ Parlor. So don’t wait! Remember that discounts for both members and nonmembers are only available in advance. If you pay at the gate, you pay full price even if you are a member!

For the MBOTMA festival in August you will be able to purchase advance tickets via mail, phone, or PayPal until Monday, July 31 (10 days in advance) at 5pm. For this year you will still be able to purchase advance tickets, as in the past, at any current outlets we are using until the day before festival. This could change for next year though, so be sure to check the website and flyers before waiting until the last minute.

Another change that we are working on is getting reserved campsite letters out much earlier this year and they have earlier cutoffs than ever as well. This will allow El Rancho to get the list of assigned campers from us sooner than in the past, which will allow them to more easily accept reservations from festival campers who want to come early. The goal for next year and the future is to get Kickoff letters out close to the first of January, with a February 1st deadline and MBOTMA Festival letters out near March 1st with an April 1st deadline.

So keep your eyes open, plan ahead, and don’t wait until the last minute!!! You have been warned! :)

Student Guitar Show at MSC Southeast in Red Wing: a world of brand new acoustic instruments every spring

Guitars, guitars, guitars in all directions. And the occasional mandolin.

That’s what it’s like at the annual Student Guitar Show at Minnesota State College Southeast every spring. A bumper crop of beautiful woods and intricate inlay.

Flat top acoustic guitars, archtop guitars, electric guitars, as far as the eye can see!

The Student Guitar Show is an exhilarating experience for anyone who loves handcrafted musical instruments, but most of all, it’s a thrill for the students who race right up until the last day to finish their instruments on time. The event takes place at MSC Southeast (308 Pioneer Road, Red Wing, MN) on Tuesday, May 9 from 11 am to 1 pm.

The Guitar Repair & Building (first year) and Guitar Development & Production (second year) diplomas at MSC Southeast are unique full year accredited college-level programs that draw students from all over the United States.

“We expect to see about 50 instruments at the Student Guitar Show this year,” says long-time instructor

“But we won’t just see them – we will find out if they sound as good as they look. The students will get to hear their acoustic guitars and mandolins played in concert by Chris Silver, Mike Cramer, and Phil Heywood.”

MBOTMA member Ann Iijima is in the first-year program this year. She has a B.A. from Carleton and a law degree from the U of MN, but it was “back to school” for her last fall. Ann says, “I came to MSCS as a recent retiree, having spent most of my career in law and education (and legal education). The guitar program is the most interesting, challenging, and FUN thing I’ve ever undertaken. Wonderful instructors, students, and staff!”

Ann is building a small bodied (Single 0) 12-fret guitar with Indian rosewood back, sides, and fingerboard, Engelmann spruce top, herringbone rosette, and her signature “Silver Cranes” logo inlaid on the headstock.

Michael Heimdinger came all the way from Austin, TX to learn guitar building in Red Wing. Now in his second May 2017

year, he’s putting the finishing touches on two of his instruments: an archtop guitar and a small bodied guitar based on a Gibson L-1. Second year students learn advanced finishing techniques; Michael applied a sunburst to his flat top in the old Gibson style.

“I came to Southeast because it was the most in-depth program for guitar building. No other school offers two years of training. Plus it’s a public college, so it was the most affordable option for me,” Michael says.

THE BLUFF COUNTRY GATHERING 2017 Had I learned to fiddle, I should have done nothing else. - Samuel Johnson

If the venerable Dr. Johnson were still around, he could come to Lanesboro, MN and do exactly that. May 18-21 is the nineteenth annual Bluff Country Gathering, a celebration of traditional music, where old-time music and dance are perpetuated and shared. The small town of Lanesboro, the jewel of southeast Minnesota, comes alive for these few days as the home of the favorite music festival of many old-time players from around the country.

The registered participants pay $225 for concerts, a barn dance and two full days of workshops, along with gourmet lunches and as much jamming as they can handle. For those who don’t want to attend workshops, the concert on Friday night May 19, and the barn dance on Saturday May 20, are open to the public (and reasonably priced!).

The performers/instructors this year come from varied areas of the country,

Reed Island Rounders from Virginia to the Arkansas Ozarks to New Mexico. Workshops will cover not only fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin and

harmonica, but also ballad singing, music of the Carter Family, clogging and square dance calling.

This is the first time the Reed Island Rounders have performed at the Gathering. Betty Vornbrock is an accomplished old time fiddler who has taken home the top prize at many southern fiddle contests. Don’t expect what many think of when they hear “contest,” for Betty is steeped in the traditional sounds of Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina, not the slicker, more modern, less danceable Texas style. Her husband Billy Cornette is a fine guitar player and singer and the two of them run a Christmas tree farm near Hillsville, VA as their regular job. Playing banjo with the Rounders is Kirk Sutphin, a near legendary player, who also doubles on fiddle with Betty on some numbers.

From New Mexico come Jeanie McLerie and Ken Keppeler, or Bayou Seco. They have been performing together for nearly 40 years and their music is as eclectic as can be: southern old time, cowboy songs, Cajun, Hispanic, and the Guachi music of Arizona’s Tohono O’Odham tribe. With Jeanie on May 2017

one of only a handful of old-time mouth harp players who have helped bring this “poor man’s fiddle” to the center of the music again.

Now living in Minneapolis, Matt Cartier has spent a lot of time in the Ozarks. An excellent musician, Matt’s at the Gathering primarily to call the

Saturday night dance and to teach clogging and square dance calling. Another Twin Cities resident is Bob Douglas who will be teaching mandolin for the weekend.

Currently playing with Long Time Gone and Def Lester. I am a member of the Minnesota Rock/ Country Hall of Fame and was voted MBOTMA”S favorite banjo player on their 25th anniversary.

I adjust coaching to the individual to get you where you want to go. Playing banjo can be a lifelong joy and I try to make it a fun experience.

fiddle and guitar and Ken on banjo, fiddle and accordion, this lively duo has taken their music across the U.S. and on many European tours. They live in Silver City, New Mexico where Ken also builds fiddles and Jeanie teaches a new generation of fiddlers the old styles.

Martha Burns sings old-time American songs the old-time way: heart songs, cowboy songs, tragic ballads and comic ditties, songs from the mountains and songs from the range. Her haunting voice is perfectly suited to her old-time repertoire and she’s an accomplished guitarist whose accompaniments bring out the pith in a song or provide the solid backup fiddlers crave. She has lived all around the country, but currently resides in Washington, DC. The Ozark Highballers are an oldtime stringband from the Fayetteville, AR area, reproducing the sounds of old-time music from the 1920s and 30s, concentrating on the music of the Ozarks.

Banjoist Clarke Buehling will be familiar to some people from his work with The Skirtlifters, a band that specialized in ragtime and pre-ragtime era music. Aviva Steigmeyer not only plays guitar, but also makes them and sings, including a large number of ballads and Ozark Mountain songs. Roy Pilgrim has previously performed at the Minnesota Bluegrass & Old Time Music Festival with the Drunken Catfish Ramblers. He’s a master whose youth belies his expertise on traditional fiddle music. Seth Shumate is

Minnesota Homegrown Kickoff Festival Preview

Yay, Spring has finally sprung!

I’m sure looking forward to this year’s Minnesota Homegrown Kickoff Festival; it’s one my favorite festivals for many reasons. Part of it is the great location; the El Rancho Manana campground is spread out over 1,200 tree-filled acres so it’s no problem finding the perfect campsite.

Part of it is the awesome stage and shaded seating area where you get to watch and listen to 20 MBOTMA member bands do their thing. Camping out and picking music with friends, family, and soon-tobe friends in this peaceful setting sure is a whole lotta fun.

Main Stage

The main stage is the place to catch wonderful bluegrass, old-time and related music played by our MBOTMA bands.

Twenty member bands are playing this year starting at 6 PM on Friday. It’s a great line-up of bands and it’s sure to be a good time.

Workshops

Take a break from listening and come do some doin’: you’re sure to have fun and learn something new at the Minnesota Homegrown Kickoff workshops and JamWith-The-Band sessions!

If you play an instrument, write songs, or sing (or would like to do so), we have a number of great workshops planned.

Old-time banjo and fiddle workshop with Dick Kimmel and Pamela Longtine. Dick and Pamela, who will be releasing a new CD next month, will have a great deal to share about individual instrumental and duo techniques.

Beginning mandolin with Tom Schrack. This long-time MBOTMA member and dedicated volunteer will be sharing his teaching expertise this spring.

Even folks who are true beginners on the mandolin will be able to play a few tunes at the end of this workshop.

Guitar with Tony Rook. Tony leads the Tony Rook Band, which features Brent Fuqua, Terry Johnson, and Graham Sones, and plays guitar and sings lead and tenor with Dick Kimmel & Co. 10

Bass with Sarah Birkeland. This young woman already has built an impressive resume, playing with Sarah Mae & the Birkeland Boys and with Porcupine Creek.

Songwriting with Bill Isles. In 1993, Bill survived sudden cardiac arrest.

Instead of ending his life, it jump-started his creative energies, resulting in a 150 show-per-year itinerary, presenting his profoundly meaningful songs, including “Hobos in the Roundhouse.” He will be joined by Kate, his wife, co-writer, and musical collaborator.

Harmony singing with the Double Down Daredevils. This band really made a splash at the 2016 Minnesota State Fair when they opened their set at the Minnesota Americana Roots Band Contest with an a capella five-part harmony. Come learn how they do it!

JAMS

Folks who love to jam (or think they might) will have many opportunities to do so: New to jamming? No problem! Bill Cagley will be leading his perennially popular Jamming Workshops (beginning and intermediate) at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. This is a totally safe

jamming environment, and you’ll learn enough to jam along with hundreds of songs! Truth be told, these sessions are so much fun that beginning, intermediate, and advanced players all show up to play.

Also on Saturday, a couple of MBOTMA’s most well-known bands have agreed to stop by the Gathering Place to jam with everyone. Monroe Crossing will lead a bluegrass jam at 2:00, and the Eelpout Stringers will lead an old-time jam at 4:30. You’ll have a wonderful time at these no-pressure jams, and, after the festival, you’ll be able to say, “Ah yes, that’s a wonderful band. I was jamming with them at a festival earlier this year . . .

And, as is traditional at all MBOTMA festivals, there will be open jamming throughout the camping areas all weekend.

Ranch House Live

The Ranch House Live (RHL) provides a less formal venue for anyone interested in performing in front of folks.

The RHL is a single mic set-up that takes place at the El Rancho Manana Ranch House from 8 p.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday. There will be a sign up genius on the MBOTMA Kickoff webpage.

The Homegrown Kickoff Bands Noah John & Ringing Iron

We are a band based in southeastern Wisconsin playing traditional bluegrass and gospel music as well as country, Americana and folk. We blend driving banjo, powerful mandolin, steady rhythm guitar and tight harmonies to create a new, unique sound with a reminiscence of legends such as Jimmy Martin and Ralph Stanley. The group is made up of Noah John on guitar and lead vocals, John Halvorson on bass and tenor vocals, Gabriel Dettinger on banjo and baritone vocals, and Chris Mcdonell on Mandolin.

Doubledown Dare Devils

The Double Down Daredevils are still a young band, about a year old, but made up of some guys who’ve been around the block a few times. One of the things we have discovered is that we all love to sing. There are five guys, and in any given show you will hear all five of us singing both lead and harmony parts in a kaleidoscope of vocal combinations. The song list ranges from traditional bluegrass to Americana to Celtic and gospel, many including significant a cappella parts.

We are a band of singers!

The Daredevils are: Tom Peschges guitar, lead and harmony vocals, Nathan Fjeld – guitar, lead and harmony vocals, Tim Wankel - bass, lead and harmony vocals, Brin Petersen – mandolin, lead and harmony vocals, David Smith – banjo, lead and harmony vocals.

Gentleman’s Anti-Temperance League

Mary DuShane was the fiddler for the original Powdermilk Biscuit Band on the Prairie Home Companion radio show and has performed at MBOTMA events with Mad Jack and the Black Label Boys, and the Buffalo Gals. With Nick Jordan on vocals, guitar, mandolin, flute, whistle and foot percussion, the duo presents old-time, Irish, Cajun and vintage swing tunes and songs.

The Gentlemen’s Anti-Temperance League is a “Prohibition Swing” sextet.

They draw from a thick, hot blend of musical influences that mixes equally well with coffee or whiskey. Why not both? Come for the gypsy jazz and stay for the bluegrass, and shake and stomp all day long to an old-fashioned string band with just the right dash of sultry brass.

Switched at Birth

Since 1998, Switched At Birth has been entertaining folks with their wide array of acoustic musical styles performing at clubs, private parties, events, county and state fairs, and festivals. At any given performance, you can expect to hear bluegrass, folk, blues, country, Cajun, Irish, and rock & roll.

The group’s mission is to have fun, and it shows! Three recordings are available: “First Born” (Pam & Rick’s studio duet recording featuring guest musicians), “Live: Now & Then” (a collection of live recordings featuring past and present band members), and “Labor of Love” our latest studio recording. Members are Rick Anderson –guitar, banjo & vocals, Pam Kolupailo-guitar & vocals, Mark Brieremandolin & vocals, Mark Rizzardi-bass & vocals, and we also feature various fiddle players.

Truegrass

TrueGrass is a new band in the old style, covering material by the classic bands of old with reverence, but also adapting modern material and originals to the bluegrass idiom.

Tom Draughon formed this band as part of a multimedia theatre show about the rural roots and history of bluegrass.

Tom is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, primarily playing Doc Watson style guitar and fronting lead vocals.

MBOTMA’s own Jed Malischke holds down the banjo / dobro fort, assisted by Molly Stoddard (Molly and the Makers) on mandolin and fiddle, Bruce Qualey on bass and Liesel Wilson on fiddle. And they ALL sing!

steadily over the years and now, a hundred songs later, it sparkles… Instrumentally, the pair are a folkie power duo. Capable of double-digitry, they limit themselves to a half dozen instruments on When There’s Good to Be Done.” This project was supported by an Artist Initiative Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board.

Curtis Teague and Loretta Simonet feature tight vocal harmonies, and a parade of instruments including mandocello, guitars, clawhammer banjo, steel ukulele, folk harp, and harmonica.

The folk singer-songwriter duo is based in Minneapolis, but they rack up countless miles each year, crisscrossing the country to perform for their loyal following from coast to coast. Curtis & Loretta joined MBOTMA about 1988, and soon after Loretta became the Coming Up editor, a volunteer job she still holds!

We’re a Minnesota-based bunch of old-fogies that delight in playing turn-ofthe-century (1800’s) old-time or square dance music (think “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?”). We also sing beautiful ballads and historic Civil War-era songs.

But mostly, we make sure listening folks young, old and in-between are having a good time.

Traditional Americana music is about “community” and fun! Just think of the weddings, barn dances, church picnics, harvest festivals and such that couldn’t have happened without it? We figure our job is to keep the heart and soul of this people-bonding tradition alive. It’s a job we love! If there’s fun to be had, we’ll find and share it with all.

So what do these gatherings look like today (or “where do we play?”);

Bob and Lynn Dixon are married and perform as the band Bob & Lynn Dixon, known for sweet duet singing and old-time dance tunes. Both of them were immersed in the ’60s folk boom when they met in a college music theory class and have been singing together ever since.

Their songs draw heavily from the early days of recording in America, with lots of good Carter Family, Delmore Brothers, Charlie Poole, and the like – songs that survive without wearing out.

Their tunes come from old-time jams and workshops, and from local and visiting Nordic musicians. Recently they have been adding more and more tunes from the Midwest.

Bob plays guitar and mandolin.

Lately he has been learning to play some great Danish tunes on a two-row button accordion. Lynn plays fiddle and guitar.

For dances she also plays piano.

Mark Kreitzer Band

The Mark Kreitzer Band is a group of musicians with decades of experience each, and their blend of talent, grasp and love of traditional bluegrass, and original music set them apart. Led by Mark on guitar and occasionally mandolin and lead vocals, he is also the group’s awardwinning songwriter. Brother Chuck Kreitzer is the tenor singing bass player, and has been with Mark since they played together in the Middle Spunk Creek Boys.

Newest to the band is John Bodle, who handles the banjo work, and is also a wonderful mandolinist! Rounding out the band is Tom Schaefer on fiddle and vocals. Mark and Tom have played together on and off since the early 1970s, when they were in the Rocky Mountain Oysters back in South Dakota. They’re really hoping to not relive the kickoff experience of a few years ago when they literally had to wade to the stage! That said, they’re ready to put on their water wings in order to perform this year...

Monroe Crossing

Monroe Crossing dazzles audiences with an electrifying blend of classic bluegrass, bluegrass gospel and heartfelt originals. Their superb musicianship and on-stage rapport have entertained audiences across the United States, Canada and Europe.

In 2007 Monroe Crossing was inducted into the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame. They have twice been selected to showcase at IBMA’s annual “World of Bluegrass” convention. The band has also appeared twice at Carnegie Hall in New York City. In 2016 they had the honor of being the first Minnesota bluegrass band to perform in South Korea.

Monroe Crossing has recorded 15 CD’s to date. Their latest release is

entitled, “Monroe Crossing Plays Classic Country.” It is a collection of cover songs from the golden era of country music (1950s & ‘60s).

Whether playing traditional bluegrass, bluegrass gospel, original bluegrass or even songs outside the genre, Monroe Crossing is one of the most entertaining acts on the bluegrass scene today!

Blue Groove

Blue Groove is a multiple award-winning bluegrass band that hails from Minneapolis/St Paul, and are active members of MBOTMA, and the Bluegrass Music Association of Iowa (BMAI). The band covers material from a number of past and current bluegrass artists, and presents a few originals as well. The Blue Groove sound leans towards a more contemporary vibe (Alison Krauss, Rhonda Vincent), while maintaining ties to traditional bluegrass (Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs) and all of its drive, improvisation and harmony singing!

The band is comprised of experienced veteran players and singers, as well as some new faces in the bluegrass scene.

The band members are Adelle Hyrkas, lead vocals and rhythm guitar; Brent Fuqua, mandolin and lead vocal; David Smith, banjo and vocal harmony; Bob Doe, lead guitar, dobro, and vocals; and Tom Erickson, upright bass fiddle.

Bill & Kate Isles

Bill & Kate Isles are an acoustic singer/songwriter duo based in Duluth, Minnesota. Using a wide variety of musical styles, their performances carry audiences through a broad landscape of experiences from metaphorical worlds to small town family stories and to zany comedy. Consummate performers, they are known for their catchy melodies and memorable songs. They have a deep-seated love for the audience, and each other, and it shines before, during, and after the performance. They tour nationally, presenting their profound songs for audiences large and small, from house concerts to festival stages and everything in between. Words like “Mesmerizing,” “Transcendent,” and even, “Hysterical” are common descriptions from audience reviews and audiences members feel that they are listening to stories of their own lives, told by two of their best friends.

Tony Rook Band

Born and raised in North Carolina, Tony Rook is no bluegrass novice. He picked up his first guitar at the age of 12, rocking out in the local music scene before returning to his bluegrass roots. Tony, now a multi-instrumentalist, describes his music as “incredibly personal.”

His songs convey real-life experiences and hardships through soulful lyrical arrangements and intricate guitar riffs.

His album “Labor of Love,” released in 2000 with Rook & Wood, garnered much recognition in the bluegrass community and inspired Tony to continue to push his musical boundaries.

In his debut solo project “The Road Back Home,” released in March 2016, Tony showcases his singer/songwriter skills with eight original tracks of contemporary bluegrass featuring awardwinning artists such as Becky Buller, Matt Flinner, and Dick Kimmel & Co. Tony Rook Band members are Brent Fuqua on mandolin and vocals, Terry Johnson on bass and vocals, and Graham Sones on banjo and vocals.

Brent brings a modern approach to his playing, his breaks, in particular. He’s a strong instrumentalist whose creativity, enthusiasm and energy helps drive TRB. As its bassist, Terry is TRB’s backbone.

Graham brings a driving banjo to the quartet. He’s extremely versatile and can easily shift from melodic fiddle tunes to a straight-ahead Scruggs style.

Porcupine Creek

Inspired by the legends of bluegrass, with subtle influence from new grass sounds of today, Porcupine Creek is made up of young talented musicians. The band covers bluegrass and gospel favorites and mixes in a few original songs, which pleases crowds of all ages.

The band formed in 2012 when the Ashworth and Birkeland kids all decided to compete in a Family Area talent contest at the MBOTMA August festival. Our group “Blue Chew” won the Saturday contest and we got to play a song on the main stage as a tweener act. Before performing in November 2012, we changed our name to Porcupine Creek. Since then, we’ve played at other festivals and various community events.

During the summer of 2013, another fine musician, Holger Olesen, joined the band.

Members of Porcupine Creek include Jake Ashworth on banjo; Ben Ashworth on guitar; Derek Birkeland on vocals, guitar, fiddle and mandolin; Holger Olesen on vocals and resonator guitar; Sarah Birkeland on vocals and bass; and Dulcie Ashworth on vocals and fiddle.

Def Lester

Def Lester is group of good friends that have played together on and off in many configurations for several decades (just how many none of them remembers, or if they do, they aren’t telling). Theirs is an eclectic mix of traditional bluegrass and new grass with a groove and drive.

Dr. Lincoln Potter, originally from Nashville, has that high, lonesome vocal thing that can only originate from below the Mason-Dixon line. His rhythm and lead guitar are on the money.

Ross Vaughan hails from Duluth and is the rhythm king on mandolin. From fiddle tunes to jazz, he can play it all.

Longtime member of Cousin Dad, he’s rumored to have one of the lowest golf handicaps in the band.

Dr. Tom Schaefer, from South Dakota, is a master on the fiddle. He has played with just about everybody who is anybody- even us. From swing to bluegrass, he does it all. His sweet tone and versatility make him the go-to guy in the area. A current member as well in Cousin Dad, he sees golf as a good walk ruined.

Pete Mathison, another veteran of Cousin Dad, is one of those people that can play anything on the bass including solos on fiddle tunes. He’s played with groups as diverse as Farm Accident and Cousin Dad to Tangled Roots. His vocal stylings and droll sense of humor are not to be missed.

Barry St. Mane grew up in that hotbed of bluegrass, north Minneapolis, where he gave up a not very promising hockey career to pursue the 5 string banjo.

Accomplished in Scruggs and melodic style his embellishments fit nicely with Def Lester’s sound (most of the time).

Blessings Gospel Trio

The Blessings Gospel Trio is a family group consisting of two brothers, Bob and Tim, and their uncle Jerry. They have been performing together at churches and festivals since 1992. Their music is a blend of folk, southern gospel, and bluegrass sounds that emphasize the Gospel message with clear vocals using three-part harmonies. The trio has seven recordings available and their music can be heard regularly on the VCY radio network.

Dick Kimmel & Pam Longtine

Dick Kimmel & Pamela Longtine began performing together in Minnesota stringbands in 2014 and as a duo a year later. Their music is a diverse collection drawn from the old-time stringband

music tradition with doses of folk and early bluegrass songs. Their new CD “Dick Kimmel & Pamela Longtine -- Fiddle & Mandolin,” released in May 2017, presents a cross-section of their music together.

Pamela plays traditional music inspired by the fiddlers who carried dance tunes, such as schottisches, jigs, and polkas from Northern Europe to America. She specializes in rural American hoedowns and waltzes as well as French-Canadian jigs and reels. Pamela began playing for community dances and other events in the Minneapolis area in the early 1990s.

She was featured on the 2011 Minnesota Fiddle Tunes Project recording. Pamela’s original tunes, one of her specialies, are carefully placed in the style of the older fiddle tunes.

Bluegrass Keeps Reinventing Itself

When I was doing the Gem of Bluegrass segment about the evolution of the song Darling Corey heard on the Bluegrass Review the week beginning Saturday April 8, I realized that recent versions of Darling Corey represent two distinct Bluegrass impulses.

Early bluegrass was the result of a gradual musical evolution, the musical vision of Bill Monroe and also, serendipity. The evolution was one set in motion in the 1930s after the Great Depression, as musicians and other music industry people thought long and hard about positioning musical acts not only within the country music industry but within American pop music. Bill Monroe’s vision was the re-orchestrating of several strands of traditional music into the string band format. Today we consider the 5-string banjo as a key element in a typical bluegrass band lineup. However, Bill did not always carry a banjoist in the Blue Grass Boys. It was serendipitous that Earl Scruggs was able to audition for Monroe. Earl’s playing convinced Monroe that the banjo could be a featured element of the Blue Grass Boys, and Earl’s fancy banjo playing added the dimension that caused the Blue Grass Boys to become the standard to which other hot string bands were compared.

Bluegrass started out as a progressive string band style, and it has always had a cutting edge. But its format became standardized; some players and fans started thinking about the greatness of the original conception. As a result, Bluegrass not only has a progressive cutting edge, but a musical conservatism as well.

Now, take “Darling Corey.” It started as an old-time song focused on a moonshining gal named Corey, and some say the song is related to the song “Little Maggie.” The Monroe Bros’ influential recording of “Darling Corey” helped the song stay in circulation. It was given a boost when Flatt and Scruggs included the song under the name of “Dig a Hole in the Meadow” at its 1962 Carnegie Hall concert.

However, some recent Bluegrass tends towards complexity.

A recent version of “Darling Corey” by Sideline delivers a multiepisodic version of the song. However, another recent version

by Amythyse Kiah goes just the other way. It is “stripped down” with modernistic trappings in Amythyse’s vocal delivery.

Comparing the Sideline and Kiah versions reminds us that the Bluegrass scene today responds to many impulses, some retro and some cutting edge. The variety of approaches is one reason it is a great time to be a Bluegrass fan.

Salt River or Salty River is a well-known old-time fiddle tune in the Mid-West. It’s not to be confused with the popular bluegrass tune from West Virginia and Texas with the same name played by Clark Kessinger, Doc Watson and Bill Monroe. Missouri fiddler, Cyril Stinnett (1912-1986) via Casey Jones, is usually pointed to as the source of the tune. Salt River is listed by Missouri fiddle tune champion, Charlie Walden, as one of the “100 essential Missouri tunes.” Salt River has been on the play list and a favorite of the Tune Jerks (Tom Schaefer, Adam Kiesling, and myself) since our beginning and we enjoy playing it with the South Dakota Boys whenever they come to town.

According to the Missouri State Old Time Fiddlers Association, Cyril Stinnett was born near Savannah, in northwest Missouri.

His dad was a farmer and a fiddler. When about eight years old, Cyril began secretly playing fiddle in the basement at home. He learned on his dad’s fiddle, practicing for months before surprising his dad with his playing. Because of a childhood injury to his right hand, Cyril favoured his left and played left-handed without re-stringing the fiddle. So, ala Elizabeth Cotton, he played it backwards for a fiddler, resulting in great intonation and strong double stops on the lower strings. Within a couple of years Cyril was playing for dances. When he was eighteen, he entered his first fiddle contest during a church ice cream social and won the contest. Cyril never married and spent almost his entire life in northwest Missouri near Filmore.

Cyril could play hours without repeating a tune. It has been estimated he had over 300 tunes in repertoire many of which he had learned from Casey Jones and Bob Walters. Cyril Stinnett was the 1966 winner of the National Oldtime Fiddlers Contest in Weiser, Idaho. He was the quintessential bachelor farmer making his living as a sharecropping farmer near Oregon, MO. In his last few years Cyril owned no playable fiddle, yet he still played and competed in fiddle contests on borrowed instruments. He could pick up a fiddle he had never touched before and make it sound in the competition as if he had been playing it all his life.

Cyril’s tunes have been recorded on numerous recordings and notated in numerous books. YouTube videos of his playing can be easily found. But an even better option is to purchase the Missouri Valley Music DVD of Cyril Stinnett’s playing entitled “Legendary Missouri Fiddler.” It has over a hundred fiddle tunes from home video recordings from 1979-80. It is available along with numerous tune recordings on Bandcamp from missourivalleymusic.com.
