Fashion Throughout the Decades 1900-2000

By: Sara Virtanen

1900s Fashion in the 1900s was about the same as the last century. The popular silhouette for women was pigeon shaped, so a large chest and small waist. Tops and sleeves were loose, and petticoats were used to get a flat front and full back. Lace was a popular choice for those who could afford it and clothing was full of decorations and were usually light colored. During the daytime women would dress modestly, from neck to the floor and with long sleeves, but during the evening, gowns would be more revealing, with low necklines and short sleeves.

1910s Menswear in the 1910s was like the previous decade. For casualwear there were lounge suits, like modern-day business suits, as they had three pieces. Trousers started to be narrower, shorter and the cuffs were turned up. Trousers also had a crease in the front, which was made possible with the invention of the trouser-press. The three-piece suit continued after WW1 and the trench coat became popular, as they were water-resistant and kept the British officers dry and warm during the war.

1920s After the war, women started wearing clothes without many layers, that were more comfortable and that had a more natural, free shape. The flapper girl look became a popular one. The look was a dress with a dropped waist and a higher hemline. Evening dresses still occasionally had lower hemlines but those too started following with the trends of daywear after some time. Beads, rhinestones and sequins became popular in decoration and the most popular colors were grey, blue, black, yellow, peach, sand and rose.

1930s The 1930's introduced a new silhouette in menswear, broad shoulders, tall, wide pant legs and a thin waist. Clothing was loose, as men usually worked most of the time. Men wore suits that were casual or formal depending on the cut, material and color. Patterns were important and bold and popular colors were blues, browns and greys. Unlike in the 20s where patterns were usually in clashing colors, the 30s patterns had lighter and darker tones of the same color. Pants sat high on the waist and jackets skirted to add a fuller hip.

1940s The hourglass silhouette became popular during this period. Clothing introduced masculine details such as nipped-in high waist tops, padded shoulders and knee-high A-line skirts. Natural makeup with red lipstick was used to make the dark time of WW2 more enjoyable. Pants were also worn in this time as women also helped with the war efforts. In formalwear sequins and beads were still used. Black was the most popular color and hemlines were usually low.

1950s Suits were more comfortable in this time. Colors were dark and uniform, such as dark blue, dark brown and charcoal. Shoulder pads lost their popularity and pants lost pleats and became flat from the front. Jackets also became more of a straight silhouette. The Mr. T look, a shapeless silhouette and narrow lapels, became favored. Pant cuffs weren't needed anymore and at the start of the decade pants were wide but throughout the years they started to narrow.

1960s In the 60s clothing went from expensive couture to cheap street wear. High hemlines were liked, the shorter the hemline the more confident the woman was. Dresses had different designs of which a tight bodice and full skirt carried on to the 70s. Other popular designs were a drop waisted style (like the flapper style of the 20s), shift dresses (dresses without much shaping) and jumper dresses. Childlike clothes were also favored, so a shapeless silhouette, large collars and bows. Bright colors and patterns were also popular. Necklines became higher in tops, but now tops were also worn untucked.

1970s The 70s was the era of peacock fashion, which is named that because men dressed to show themselves off. Bellbottom pants were usual as well as tight shirts and jeans. Ruffled shirts, jumpsuits, platform boots, hot pants were also favored, and bold prints also found their home in this era of the disco.

1980s In the 80s jeans were a big thing for women. Especially with younger women designer jeans were a popular choice. They came in lots of different styles and colors. Acid and stone washed jeans became a mainstream fashion trend in the mid 80s. Other popular clothing items were jumpsuits, sweaters, power suits, graphic t-shirts, polos and button downs. Most dresses were A-lined, and hemlines were from knee to mid-calf. The neckline and shoulder area was very important during this era. Shoulder pads and puffy sleeves were popular.

1990s During the 90s there was a lot of different types of clothes that were popular, and it varied on the style you wanted. A few examples would be denim jackets, tracksuits, baseball jackets, bomber jackets, pale denim drainpipe jeans, graphic tshirts and V-neck sweaters. Grunge, modern preppy, hip-hop, cool Britannia, African fashion and 70s revival were popular styles during that time.
