This year, the MinKwon Center for Community Action will celebrate its 40-year anniversary In celebration of our past, present, and future, we invite you to partner with us for our 40th Anniversary Gala, which will take place on Thursday, October 17, 2024 at 6pm at The Riverside Church in Morningside Heights Our 40th Year celebration demonstrates MinKwon’s ambitions to (1) raise visibility for our underserved communities and (2) attract new support for MinKwon’s unceasing and unwavering advocacy toward economic and social justice for all
Our first honoree will be Stanley Mark, Senior Attorney at AALDEF for his many years of unwavering service to the Asian American community. This year’s gala is co-chaired by Chul Pak and Steve Choi.
MinKwon’s 40th Anniversary Gala will bring together over 200 attendees and help MinKwon achieve this year’s special fundraising goal of $400,000. With this support, MinKwon can continue to provide our community members with free-of-cost services and programming, in addition to advocacy and organizing efforts throughout the New York Metropolitan area. As a sponsor, you will help us (1) advocate for those who fall through the gaps in our society, (2) provide culturally and linguistically appropriate services, (3) strengthen MinKwon’s infrastructure and grow as an organization, and (4) dream big about our future.

The MinKwon Center For Community Action carries on the legacy of the South Korean democracy movement, Korean American community action, and advocacy for immigrants’ rights, voters’ rights, and civil rights.
October 21, 1984
MinKwon is founded as Young Korean American Service and Education Center (pictured below, left).


National Korean American Service and Education Consortium (NAKASEC) is established with sister organizations in other states to advocate for immigration reform (pictured above, right)
Raised funds to buy advertisement space in The Washington Post to educate public and organize in opposition to anti-immigration legislation.
Start of New Immigrant Voter Registration Program.
Launched "Dollar-A-Person" campaign to buy advertisement space in The New York Times to advocate for immigration reform.
25th Anniversary relaunch as MinKwon Center for Community Action.

Minkwon Center convened first AAPI Redistricting coalition in NYS during the 2010 Redistricting Cycle, and successfully advocated for creation of first AAPI near-majority district that would come to be represented by Congresswoman Grace Meng, the first Asian American member of Congress on the East Coast

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) begins implementation. MinKwon has so far processed approximately 7% of Korean American DACA cases nationwide.
Established a civic engagement coalition (Asian Pacific Americans Voting & Organizing to Increase Civic Engagement - APA VOICE) with NYC APIA organizations, and led comprehensive civic participation activities.

As the leading AAPI organization on the driver’s licenses for all campaign, MinKwon advocated for nearly 20 years to achieve equal access to driver’s licenses in New York State (pictured right).
2020
Conducted largest and most in-depth survey of undocumented Korean American New Yorkers to date
Raised and distributed over $1.5 million in Cash Assistance for 2,000 families otherwise ineligible for government stimulus checks during COVID-19 crisis.
Launched Flushing Food Collaborative food pantry (pictured right).
Assisted with 50,000 applications for unemployment insurance.

Successful expansion with second site opening in Palisades Park, New Jersey.
