Barragán House Designed by the Masperi brothers in 1911, this building is one of the earliest examples of the use of new building materials, marking a break with adobe and wattle-and-daub in favour of brick, concrete and iron. Being of Italian origin (Milan), the Masperi brothers adopted a type of Art Nouveau style known in Italy as the Liberty style – based on classical traditions and the industrial arts and with a special fondness for floral designs – whose main exponents were Sommaruga and D’Aranco. The Masperi brothers arrived in Lima in 1894. Raymundo was the architect and Guido undertook all the plasterwork. The house comprises four levels, including the basement. The first two were designed to accommodate commercial establishments, and were occupied by the famous Palais Concert cafe, which dates from 1912, when the management body of the Exhibition Restaurant rented out the basement and ground floor to Genaro Barragán Urrutia. It opened with a New Year’s party in 1913, and was the favourite haunt of intellectuals and aristocrats. It also had two public halls, with 80 and 20 tables respectively, a patisserie and a bar. The decorative repertoire is all based on the Art Nouveau style. Designed around a chamfered corner, the Barragán House culminates in a lookout tower, a typical feature in ancestral homes during the viceroyalty in Lima.
Dubois House During the Balta administration the Dubois family were involved in financial management, and also had relations with the businessman Meiggs and the financier Dreyfus. The construction of the Dubois House was allegedly authorised by
