Biodiverse co-living/Urban Residential
Graduate 2024-Winter: Collective Instructor: Craig Borum & Claudia Wigger Design & Research: Group Work
Role/ Designed housing units and a multi-functional core furniture system. Modeling and visualization for section model and Perspective drawing
This project explores solutions for "Living in the Urban Wild," using Detroit's Jefferson Chalmers neighborhood as its site. Under the overarching theme of Untamed Dwelling, the project seeks to understand housing as a complex relationship between domestic interiority and a broader ecosystem encompassing flora and nonhuman habitats.
At the same time, it challenges conventional assumptions about how and where people dwell-rejecting standardized spaces such as living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms. Instead, the project envisions a more relational matrix of use and character, redefining the concept of living spaces in a way that harmonizes with the urban wild.
The central value driving the project was the concept of boundaries, which informed its progression from master planning within the urban context to the design of housing types and even furniture within the housing units.
Persepective image of curved spaces innside cluster, curving was done in various direction to be shared with diverse living conditions.
Conceptual Model to explore Coliving within biodiversity realm. Using Van Gogh's iconic room as a basic set-up and capturing in diverse perspevitve.
Master Plan
A gradient of high-density micro-forests to high density housing is established running north-south, with high density forest landscapes along jefferson avenue gradually becoming more dense dwelling units farther into the neighborhood. Urban farming is a key component of the landscape, as are variation in forest types and public spaces.
**Green in Act**
Implenting program of [one mile restaurant] defined the site; community garden spaces and greenhouses sprinkled into the landscape create an additional economy within the neighborhood and sustainably.

Unit / Pair /Cluster
Dwellings are made up of a combination of 6 unit types / 3 pairs of units and a greenhouse module that can be combined in various configurations and which promote cohabitation with biodiversity through carved away spaces for landscape and wildlife. Each unit is designed to functions independently, but it shares a few communal spaces and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems with the other unit in the pair.

Plan Design
A pair of floor plans, composed of a combination of two mass modules, maintains a unified design strategy incorporating a skip-floor system and a multifunctional core. However, to accommodate diverse lifestyles, the divided floor plans vary in size and configuration. Some feature smaller and more seperate layouts, while others reduce the number of skip floors, providing larger slab areas for more spatial flexibility.

Middle floor plan.
Top floor plan.
In the mass design, the carved-out spaces allocated for others or non-human life forms are shaped with gentle curves. When combined with the vertical elements of the facade, they create a visual rhythm, enhancing the overall composition.
Core Design
The core design focuses on providing essential household functions within a given boundary while allowing flexible adjustments based on different family compositions and lifestyles. By utilizing this core, users can shape and adapt their living spaces, creating a home that is not merely a product but a truly livable and personalized environment.
Each space connected by the skip-floor system is devided by its width change rather than direct partitioning elements such as walls or doors. By eliminating fixed physical layers, residents are given more flexibility to actively shape the spatial dynamics and adapt the program according to their needs.
NORTH/
The design considers not only communication and connection within the living space but also the relationship with nature. This process involves careful selection of materials and attention to construction details.

Movie Theater
Graduate 2023-Fall: Institution
Instructor: Steven Mankouche
Design & Research: Individual
During the era of the COVID-19 pandemic, many people have refrained from visiting cinemas. In an age where it is now convenient to enjoy various content, what elements could bring people back to theaters? Rather than focusing solely on the movies themselves, attention was directed towards the surrounding experiences, seeking solutions to engage audiences in cinema-going once again.
In the past, cinemas were more than just venues for screening images. They featured elements such as orchestras playing background music, restaurants serving food and drinks, and spaces where people could gather to share stories. Visiting a cinema was not just about one-time consumption but an extension of everyday life.
This building is conceptualized to play a role similar to the cinemas of the past being a space within everyday life but adding a bit of specialness. Therefore, compared to traditional cinemas, the size and proportions of the movie screening rooms have been reduced, and the space is arranged to organically connect various areas capable of accommodating diverse programs.
The ticket booth, now vanished from many cinemas, has become the central space where moviegoers meet and socialize
A drawing illustrating the cinema seamlessly blending with neighboring buildings and harmonizing with the surrounding environment
Plan & Mass
The interior space is configured to align with the building's horizontal axis, distinct from the arrangement of long parallel axes that form the mass of the building, to suit the internal program, making the outlines of mass. Angled and misaligned mass makes the dramatic change of scene.

Architecture is not merely about constructing spaces; it is a continuous process of questioning its essence, pushing the boundaries of form and material, and uncovering one's own strengths, weaknesses, interests, and excitement as a Designer. This sequential project of designing "House'ish" is a radical expansion of my accumulated architectural knowledge
and spatial experience, serving as an opportunity to develop a distinct working discipline while refining my approach to relational structuring, specificity in form, and transference skills. Through inventive programmatic thinking, and diverse representation methods this project stretches and refines architectural vocabularies.

1 ) Utilizing Henry David Thoreau’s Walden cabin as a spatial unit, this project investigates how individuals living through different phases of life inscribe their personal narratives onto space.
2) To depict the inescapable tension and pressure felt within the home a place that should ideally provide comfort and freedom everyday objects are appropriated and reconfigured to create a visual composition that expresses this underlying psychological strain.
3-4) Illustrating the emotions of a child leaving home and the parents witnessing this departure by projecting their feelings onto the form of house, dramatizing the experience through the concept of A House for a Comet.
[Red] + [Villa Savoye]
Villa Savoye embodies Le Corbusier's vision of modern living through his Five Points of Architecture, presenting his philosophy in its purest form. While it holds a pivotal place in architectural history, untold stories lie in its shadow-those excluded from the future he envisioned and the gap between his ideal future and ours today.
Expressed in a highly simple and clear design language, the Villa pursues an image of transparency and openness. However, maintaining this image requires hidden spaces and people. To embody this narrative, Villa Savoye is deconstructed and grounded, with its serving spaces repositioned on top of it to become the seeds of a new program.
Red, in this context, represents the tone of this conversation, stands as a resilient force, waiting to be heard. Bursting, seeping, or flowing, red reveals its many forms. Exploring these shades invites us to imagine a new House'ish, by rethinking, and interpreting our version of Villa Savoye.

Can we create a space where we can experience only the essence of all religion? How do we redefine a religious space that reflects the changing needs of society?
In Korea, the number of religious people has decreased over time. Furthermore, a growing number of people have stopped frequenting religious facilities as people became uncomfortable with the services provided by existing religious institutions. On the other hand, the estimate of immigrants with various religious backgrounds has exceeded; Korea is rapidly transforming into a multi-religious society that houses over 510 indigenous and foreign religious denominations. While the number of buildings representing major religions is still increasing, these buildings are becoming exclusive to other faiths and resistant to changes.
Imagining unnecessary boundaries of religions to be blurred, so that people are free to affiliate space regardless of their faiths, everyone will be able to practice their beliefs in comfort and complete freedom.
As there is a difference between the developed picture and the image seen in the raw film, there is a question of what is the invisible essence in space.

-History of Symbols
Namsan Mountain has long contained various symbols. The need for a building that can organize this chaotic history seem neccesary
The Namsadang Shrine, which holds the national rite, is called Mokmyeok the Great. It was considered a sacred mountain, so there were many large and small shrines
To press down on the active independence movement, a large shrine was built in the name of strongly instilling Japanese faith in the Korean people
Efforts have been made to erase distorted historical symbols, but because of the lack of proper planning, indiscriminate symbols have been created
The U.S. military bases located in Yongsan and Namsan are being withdrawn sequentially, and the Namsan site will also be fully returned after 2020.
After liberation and war, refugees who lost their place to go gathered under Namsan Mountain to form a colony.
After Park Chung-hee's coup, Central Intelligence Agency was built in Namsan. At that time being taken to Namsan was a terrible fear since that might end up being framed as spy or even be dead.

05. NOT A THING TO THINK
Undergraduate 2019-2: Conceptual Project
Tutor: Yoonhie Lee

The numerous spaces we encounter daily represent endless options and possibilities. However, making a choice inevitably leaves us to wonder what the other choices would have been like, and sometimes we regret not making the right decisions. A feeling of regret piles up and becomes a source of fatigue. Wouldn't it be nice if we could free ourselves from the obligations of making a choice, even for a day? In this case, rules that often feel like bondage and restrain our activities might become the key to our liberation. This project was planned using the feelings I felt while staying in the temple as a motif, after living in the city all my life. When I first visited the temple, many of the luggage I took from the city became useless, and there was a sense of liberation from a life that moved along with time, using only the clothes and items provided by the temple. The longer I spent in the temple, the less I had to look at the clock, but just at the longer and shorter the shadows, and the darker and brighter outside the window,.
Our daily lives are not as extreme as the 'trolley dilemma', but we are always holding levers in our hands..

Back then, the state-of-the-art computers, electronic devices, and game CDs were on display, and it was not difficult to meet experts who knew the latest trends and technology.
Yongsan Electronics Market, however, failed to keep up with the changes of the times and eventually became an seized part of the city. One factor that explains the markets failure was the space planning of shops, which prioritized commercial efficiency and insisted on a closed structure. Offline spaces should highlight their offering of experience and cultural expansion to differentiate themselves from online stores.
Re-imagining Yongsan Electronics Market begins with contemplating the existing resources. Redistribution of the resources, including people with skills, products, and most importantly, spaces, for improved display will lead the market to meet the new demands of the time.
Yongsan Electronics Market dreams of reestablishing itself as a mecca where people visit whenever they find an issue with their electronic devices.
