But in reality, it’s not true that your bilirubin rises when you are in love. Bilirubin is a yellow-orange pigment that is found in bile, a liquid produced by the liver; it is also present in blood, and, by performing an analysis of it, you can determine how well the liver is working.

Let’s take a look at the increasing sugar consumption over time and how diseases such as arthritis, heart and respiratory problems, cancers, vision, circulatory, and kidney problems have increased. Also, the high consumption of sugar is related to the loss of memory.

™ In 1800, per capita consumption of sugar was 18 pounds a year.

™ In 1900, per capita consumption had grown to 90 pounds of sugar a year.

™ In 2009, more than 50 percent of Americans consumed

half a pound of sugar a day, which translates to a surprising 180 pounds of sugar a year.

Therefore it is not surprising that the obesity epidemic involves 32 percent of the population. In 1893 in the United States, there were 3 cases of obesity for every 100 thousand people. Today, there are 8 thousand for every 100 thousand.

This is mainly because we constantly consume sugar without even realizing it. Every time we drink a soda, we consume 9 tablespoons of sugar; can you imagine what it would be like to put 9 tablespoons of sugar in your mouth? We don’t notice it because we only drink one soda. We also consume sugar when we eat baked goods, sweetened yogurts, canned vegetables, and tomato sauce.

When you observe the food labels, you will find synonyms for sugar, such as syrup, refined sugar, or fructose, etc.

Fructose or corn syrup, which is used to sweeten many foods we eat, including sodas, is primarily responsible for the development of diabetes and obesity.

Cuando observes las etiquetas de los alimentos, encontrarás sinónimos como jarabe o siro de refinería, fructosa… entre otros.

La fructosa o jarabe de maíz con el cual se endulzan la mayoría de los productos que consumimos, incluyendo las sodas, es el responsable número uno en el desarrollo de la diabetes y la obesidad.

The Free Radicals The aging of cells from age or bad habits like drug use, smoking, and excessive drinking causes oxygen molecules to be released and to circulate freely around the body, causing damage wherever they go; these are called free radicals.

Aging is a natural process of oxidation that all cells throughout the body suffer, including those of the skin. Oxygen is vital for us, but when we have a large amount of free radicals, they invade cells, oxidizing or aging them.

For this reason, taking antioxidants is recommended, because they help eliminate the majority of the free radicals from our bodies and even stop or slow the aging process.

Foods with higher antioxidant properties include blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, currants, and strawberries, which also contain vitamins C and K, as well as fiber, folic acid, magnesium, and potassium. Other foods with antioxidant properties are grapes, apples, chocolate, and broccoli.

The Woman’s Heart and Risks of a Heart Attack We tend to believe that heart disease only affects men. In reality, heart disease is the number 1 killer of women as well. Heart disease kills one in every three women; approximately every minute, a woman dies of a heart attack. This disease kills almost double the amount of women in the United States than all types of cancer combined.

She is the Director of the Latino Heart Program, Su Corazon; a program designed for the Latino patient that offers an integral cardiovascular service in a culturally relevant manner. She participates in community outreach programs to increase awareness and promote a healthier lifestyle among Spanish speaking patients.

She specializes in preventive cardiology and women's heart disease. She is a member of Women's Heart NY; a multi-site comprehensive program designed for women who are at risk for heart disease or who have a history of the disease.

Dr. Eslava received her medical degree from Universidad El Bosque, Escuela Colombiana de Medicina in Bogota, Colombia. Dr. Eslava completed her residency training in Internal Medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center in NYC, and subsequently completed her Cardiology fellowship training at Beth Israel Medical Center/Long Island College Hospital in NYC. She is board certified in internal medicine,

cardiovascular disease, echocardiography and nuclear cardiology.

Ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for heart disease. Women tend to suffer more of diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol than men. Hispanic women tend to develop heart disease 10 years earlier than Caucasian women.

After women go through menopause they lose the protection of the female hormone (estrogen) and can develop high blood pressure and higher cholesterol which increases her overall risk of heart disease.

Once a woman has had a heart attack she can develop more complications from it than men. For instance, women have a greater risk of dying from the heart attack or live with a weakened heart (called heart failure) than men.

In women, the signs of a heart attack can be less obvious and go untreated for a longer period. Women can even have a "silent heart attack" which is a heart attack that occurs weeks or months ago without knowing it. The most common symptoms of a heart attack for both men and women are chest tightness, arm pain, and difficulty breathing. However, symptoms of a "silent heart attack" are more subtle and can feel like indigestion, tiredness, prolonged fatigue, jaw pain, upper back pain, nausea, dizziness, and cold sweats; these can be confused with other illnesses such as the flu.

If you feel these symptoms you should call 9-1-1 immediately to prevent a heart attack and its complications.

To lessen your risk of having a heart attack maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Avoid smoking. n Exercise, especially brisk walking and aerobics. n Have a healthy diet that includes fruits, greens, vegetables, whole grains, white meat, and fish. n Cut down on salt, flour, saturated fat and sugar intake. n Keep to your ideal weight according to your age and height. n If you suffer from depression, stress, anxiety and insomnia, consult your doctor. n

We are all candidates for a heart attack if we don’t take care of ourselves and don’t monitor our health, have regular doctor visits, take our medications the way we are prescribed, and maintain a proper diet and adequate exercise.

El corazón de la mujer y los riesgos de infarto que sucede semanas o meses sin haberlo notado. Los síntomas más común de un infarto para tanto al hombre como la mujer son opresión o apretón en el pecho, dolor en los brazos y dificultad para respirar. Sin embargo, los síntomas de un infarto silencioso son mas sutiles y pueden ser como indigestión, cansancio, fatiga, dolor en la mandíbula, dolor en la espalda, nausea, mareo, sudor; estos síntomas se pueden confundir con otras enfermedades tales como una gripe.

Si usted tiene estos síntomas debe llamar al 9-1-1 de inmediato para prevenir un infarto y sus complicaciones.

Tenemos la creencia de que las enfermedades cardíacas afectan solo a los hombres. En realidad, la enfermedad cardiaca es la primera causa de muerte en la mujer también.

La enfermedad cardíaca mata a una de cada tres mujeres; aproximadamente cada minuto muere una mujer de un infarto.

Esta enfermedad mata en Estados Unidos casi el doble de mujeres que todos los tipos de cáncer juntos.

Para reducir los riesgos de tener un infarto mantenga un estilo de vida saludable. n No fume n Haga ejercicios, en especial caminatas y aeróbicos n Lleve una dieta saludable, la cual incluya frutas, verduras, vegetales, granos integrales, carnes blancas y pescado n Reduzca el consumo de sal, harina, grasas saturadas y azúcar n Manténgase en su peso ideal de acuerdo a su edad y estatura n Si sufre eventos de depresión, estrés, ansiedad e insomnio consulte con su médico Todos podemos ser candidatos a sufrir un infarto si no nos cuidamos y no mantenemos una buena vigilancia de nuestra salud, visitando regularmente a nuestro médico, tomando nuestros medicamentos de la manera en que se nos recetaron y manteniendo un régimen de alimentación y ejercicio adecuado.

Una vez una mujer ha tenido un infarto ella puede sufrir más complicaciones que el hombre. Por ejemplo, las mujeres tienen un mayor riesgo de morir de un infarto o a vivir el resto de su vida con un corazón debilitado (falla cardiaca).

En la mujer, las señales de un infarto pueden pasar desapercibidas por consiguiente sin tratamiento. Las mujeres pueden hasta sufrir un infarto silencioso, lo cual es un infarto

InGREDIEnTS K 1 can of Van Ecuador tuna K 3 big patatoes, diced into medium sized cubes K 1 sausage diced into medium sized cubes K 1 onion diced into small pieces K 1 green pepper, diced into small cubes K 4-5 beaten eggs K 2 tablespoons of milk K 1 cup of oil PREPARATIon: Heat the oil in a large frying pan, and fry the potatoes until they are cooked but not golden. Put them to one side.

Remove most of the oil, leaving only about two tablespoons of it on the pan. Add the onion. Let it

caramelize, and add both the sausage and the green pepper.

Shut off the stove, and strain the remaining oil.

Mix the milk and eggs in a bowl, by whisking them vigorously. Add the tuna, and the sausage mix.

Season with salt and pepper.

Place the frying pan on the stove again, this time with two tablespoons of oil, over a medium heat.

Add the tortilla mix, and reduce the heat to a lower setting. Place a cover on the pan, and let it cook for ten minutes.

Flip the tortilla onto the plate as you serve it.

Mezcle en un tazón los huevos y la leche batiendo fuertemente.

Regrese la sartén al fuego con dos cucharadas de aceite a fuego medio. Añada la mezcla de la tortilla y baje a fuego lento. Tape la sartén y cocine por 10 minutos.

K Añade la taza de caldo de pollo y deja cocer a fuego lento para que se reduzca. Esto puede tardar unos 10 minutos.
