According to some studies, a portion of hookah—which lasts about an hour—is comparable to smoking 100 cigarettes, going by the amount of smoke steadily inhaled by the lungs, and it’s believed that the smoke from shisha tobacco can be 36 times more carcinogenic than that of regular tobacco, as it contains 15 times more carbon monoxide and high levels of lead, nickel, and arsenic.

This was because aside from the fact that 1 in 3 people will be plagued by cancer due to specific risk factors (such as age, race, sex, genetic factors, diet, and exposure to chemicals, radiation, and tobacco), now the bad luck factor plays an important role in the probability of getting cancer.

Sir Richard Doll, who discovered that tobacco was the number 1 cause for lung cancer, as well as Bert Vogelstein, a cancer researcher who discovered the role of genes in this disease, were some of the ones who signed off on the “Bad Luck” study, which states that the cell divisions that occur in bones, skin, and other tissues—an essential process in human development—are where replication errors occur. Once an error occurs, the higher the cell division, the higher the possibility that these errors will repeat and accumulate—errors that can result in cancer.

Although the risk associated with random chance is well known, it is the environmental factor that plays a determining role in the most common cancers. “Concluding that bad luck is the major cause of cancer would be misleading and could slow the efforts being made to identify the causes of the disease and prevent it,” according to Christopher Wild, director of IARC. The human body works like a machine that never stops, working all day and night. One day, the screws begin to loosen, and some functions begin to go wrong. Por mala suerte podemos sufrir cáncer A principio de este año se publicó un estudio que ha desatado mucha polémica. Porque además de que una de cada tres personas sufrirá cáncer a causa de sus factores de riesgo concretos, como pueden ser la edad, raza, sexo, factores genéticos, dieta y exposición a sustancias químicas, radiación y tabaco. Ahora el factor Mala suerte juega un papel importante en las posibilidad de contraer cáncer.

El británico Richard Doll, quien descubrió que el tabaco era el responsable número uno del cáncer del pulmón, al igual que Bert Vogelstein, un investigador del cáncer que descubrió el papel de los genes en esta enfermedad. Sabemos que la idea de que uno de los mayores causantes del cáncer es un factor al azar o de mala suerte, puede resultar perturbador para cualquier persona, cuando por ejemplo el 90% del cáncer de pulmón es causado por el tabaco. Es mejor cuidar el estilo de vida, y para los casos genéticos y de mala suerte, hay que visitar regularmente a nuestro médico y hacerse exámenes que permitan detectar a tiempo este mal, para poder combatirlo.

Why do I itch more after I scratch?

For some reason, whenever one feels itchy and scratches that itch, the feeling increases in intensity. Therefore, it appears that scratching is counterintuitive.

Scientists have determined that there is almost always a skin disorder that can be due to something biting you or due to irritation from allergies. Once itching occurs, the brain sends a signal that creates the effect of scratching, resulting in some pain and swelling that deceives the nervous system and soothes itching.

A team of researchers from the University of San Luis, USA, with Dr. Zhou-Feng Chen, found that scratching results in a skin inflammation that causes pain, which in turn causes the skin to block the nerve endings that transmit the itching but instead send a signal of more intense pain to the brain.

Therefore, not only does it scratch the skin, but it also increases the itching and pain sensations.

Por tanto no solo araña la piel, sino que aumentamos la sensación de picor y dolor.

Parents who do not want to vaccinate their children The US health authorities are baffled by the growing attitude many parents have to not vaccinate their children due to the distrust that some vaccines cause autism due to their high mercury content.

In 1998, The Lancet magazine published a paper by surgeon Andrew Wakefield and others, which linked the use of the tree-virus vaccine (measles, mumps, and rubella, also known as MMR) with the appearance of a new syndrome of bowel disease and autism.

A report of 12 cases in children established a temporal relationship with the MMR vaccine and the appearance of a new gastrointestinal syndrome and autism. Twelve years later, Wakefield’s work was retracted. Andrew Wakefield, John Walker-Smith, and Simon Murch were charged with fraud and improper conduct, but only Wakefield and Walker-Smith had their licenses revoked. Currently, Wakefield’s work is considered fraud.

However, this had an impact on the minds of many parents, who don’t want their children to be given vaccinations in schools and even prefer to move to another state to avoid it.

A source for major concern is measles, which by 2000 had disappeared and is now currently being recorded with hundreds of new cases.

Breast cancer prevention There is no totally safe way to prevent breast cancer. But there are steps you can take to reduce your chances of getting it. It is understood that weight, physical activities, and proper nutrition play a big role in the prevention or development of breast cancer.

Heredity, age, or race, as well as smoking, drinking, and poor eating habits, are risk factors that influence the chance of getting breast cancer. Sometimes the carcinogenic factors are related to the environment.

Following the guidelines of the American Cancer Society for early detection of breast cancer increases the chances that this disease can be diagnosed at an early stage and can be treated successfully.

1. Women 40 and older should have a mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health.

2. Women of 20-39 years of age should have a clinical breast exam (CBE), as part of a periodic health examination by a health professional, preferably every 3 years. From 40 years onward, one should have a yearly clinical breast exam by a health professional.

3. Breast self-exams (BSE) are an option for women from 20 years of age. Women should be taught the benefits and limitations of BSE. Women should report any breast changes to their doctor or nurse as soon as possible.

4. Women who are at high risk for breast cancer based on certain factors must undergo a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and a mammogram every year.

5. The American Cancer Society does not recommend an MRI screening for women whose risk of breast cancer is less than 15%.

It is important to keep checking with your doctor. Routine exams can detect these bumps by the feel of the breast.

Examinations and tests are effective to find this cancer early, which often has no symptoms.

Prevención del cáncer de seno No hay una manera totalmente segura de prevención del cáncer de seno. Pero existen algunas medidas que puedes tomar para reducir la posibilidades de contraerlo. Se tiene entendido que su peso, más las actividades físicas, más la alimentación tienen que ver mucho con la prevención o aparición del cáncer de seno.

La herencia, la edad o raza de una persona, son factores de riesgo que influyen en la posibilidad de contraer el cáncer de seno, así como fumar, beber alcohol y la alimentación. En ocasiones los factores cancerígenos están relacionados con el ambiente.

Seguir las guías de la Sociedad Americana Contra El Cáncer para la detección temprana del cáncer de seno aumenta las probabilidades de que esta enfermedad se pueda diagnosticar en una etapa temprana y que se pueda tratar con éxito.

1 Las mujeres de 40 años en adelante deben hacerse un mamograma al año y deben continuar haciéndose este examen mientras estén en buen estado de salud.

2 Las mujeres de 20 a 39 años de edad deben someterse a un examen clínico de los senos (CBE, por sus siglas en inglés), como parte de un examen de salud periódico (habitual), por parte de un profesional de la salud preferiblemente cada tres años. 3 El autoexamen de los senos es una opción para las mujeres a partir de los 20 años de edad. Se debe orientar a las mujeres sobre los beneficios y las limitaciones del autoexamen de los senos. La mujer debe reportar a su médico o enfermera cualquier cambio en sus senos lo antes posible.

4 Las mujeres que están en alto riesgo de cáncer de seno basado en ciertos factores deben someterse a una imagen de resonancia magnética (MRI) y a un mamograma cada año.

5 La Sociedad Americana Contra El Cáncer no recomienda realizar una MRI como prueba de detección en mujeres cuyo riesgo de cáncer de seno durante la vida sea menor al 15%.

Z 3 cans of Van Ecuador tuna Z 1 pound of yucca Z 2 tomatoes, chopped Z 1/2 onion, finely chopped Z 2 teaspoons of minced garlic Z 1 teaspoon annatto Z 2 teaspoons ground cumin Z 8 cups water Z 1 tablespoon chopped cilantro Z Salt and pepper to taste Z 1 onion, julienned Z 1 chopped tomato Z Juice of one lemon Z 1 teaspoon of oil Z 1/2 tablespoon chopped cilantro

Preparation of pickled onion.

Mix tomatoes, onion, lime juice, cilantro and salt to taste. Let stand for 15 minutes.

Stew preparation: Drain the oil from the tuna cans.

Put aside the tuna for later. Make a rehash with the tuna oil, onion and annatto. Let it caramelize and add the tomato. Keep on medium heat until the tomato has been incorporated and dried.

Add water and let it boil, place the yucca and cook over medium heat until the yucca is tender and the broth is thick.

Mezcle el tomate, la cebolla, el jugo de limón, el culantro y la sal al

Preparación del Caldo: Escurra el aceite de las latas de atún. Reserve el atún para más tarde. Haga un refrito con el aceite del atún, la cebolla y el achiote.

Deje caramelizar y añada el tomate.

Mantenga en fuego medio hasta que el tomate se haya incorporado y secado.

Añada el agua y deje hervir, ponga la yuca y deje cocinar a fuego medio hasta que la yuca esté suave y el caldo esté espeso.

Sirva en un plato sopero una porción de yuca, atún y cubra con el caldo. Finalice con la cebolla encurtida.

The most important reason to apply dental sealants is the prevention of cavities.
