FOREWARD Convening the 2016 Australian Medical Students’ Association Global Health Conference has been one of my proudest moments professional and personally. I had the amazing privilege of working with over 50 volunteers and the success of this conference is as much theirs as it is mine.

I am forever grateful to the NewGHC Team who have volunteered countless hours over the past 18 months to create this conference. I am proud of what our team achieved and I hope we set a blueprint for future AMSA events.

In my bid to host GHC, I wrote that “our team is ready and passionate to host this event in Newcastle and [to] inspire, challenge and connect a new cohort of future doctors.” I’m thrilled to be walking away knowing that we have achieved this goal.

NewGHC did not become a success overnight, rather, was a product of the successes, missteps and lessons of previous Global Health Conferences and AMSA Events. We have a long-standing tradition of being a thoughtful, innovative, and global-minded conference, and we are proud to carry on that tradition. It is our hope that future AMSA Event Teams will also try to make conscious decisions around sustainability and ethical consumerism in all portfolios.

My only hope for the future is that the next generation of AMSA Event Teams can learn from our stories and in doing so, create high-quality events that continue to inspire and drive the future of the medical profession.

THE CITY

THE FIRST AMSA EVENT IN NEWCASTLE (SINCE 2002) The 2016 Global Health Conference did not just grow, it prospered and thrived and we have highlighted that innovation and excellence remains at the core of GHC. Partnering with a number of organisations in the city of Newcastle, we were a building block in the wave of urban renewal transforming the city into a vibrant, unique and culturally rich place.

The relationship we developed with our key venue partner, the Newcastle Exhibition and Convention Centre (NEX), set the groundwork for GHC. As we were the first conference in the new venue, we developed a positive partnership that allowed tremendous flexibility to conform and configure the venue to meet our needs. This privileged relationship has meant that we have set the tone for future conferences at the venue, ensuring that our emphasis on sustainability and accessibility will continue in Newcastle long after NewGHC.

The Academic Program saw over 80 speakers come to Newcastle to present in plenary sessions, breakouts and interactive workshops. The Academic program remains at the heart of GHC and we moved to address the challenges of the 21st century. Topics covered included hospital bombings, refugee and asylum seekers, climate change and sustainability, and food security.

Key plenary highlights included Professor Peter Doherty, Julian Burnside, Kathleen Thomas, Khadija Glba and Anh Do. Each plenary speaker brought a different and engaging presentation on the different aspects of global health and how we can make a difference in communities.

The six dynamic workshops streams allowed delegates to go on a journey across the world; from the WHO Headquarters in Geneva where world leaders and global health experts discuss and refine health policy, to the front-line of war-torn countries and disasters where the most vulnerable flee for the safety of their lives. The workshops streams transported delegates to all corners of the globe, allowing them to experience the diversity and breadth of global health.

IN THE GREEN

In the Green provides a space for delegates to interact outside the formal atmosphere of the main plenary hall.

We provided an outdoor immersive experience with a number of different and varied stallholders. This meant that we were able to work with AMSA Rural Health and AMSA Global Health to create different stalls where students could become engaged and inspired to get involved.

With it’s festival-like atmosphere, In the Green provided an afternoon of a definite and well-earned break from the rest of the program and conference. We had a variety of activities including African Drumming, Up-cycling, tiedying, sustainable garden tours, yoga, dance classes, circus skills, a patting zoo, ideas bombing, jumping castles and face-painting!

SOCIAL Our goal for the social program was to create an atmosphere where delegates could “let loose, get naughty, and party like they would never hit forty”, but also didn’t feel pressured to drink alcohol or stay extremely late at the venue. In running such a successful conference, this worked perfectly with the academic portion of the program as they complemented each other so nicely - not in topics or themes, but with the sheer fact that delegates could have huge, fantastic, fun-filled evenings and still wake up with enough energy to enjoy all the academic days!

Each of the five social nights had plenty of unique attractions which drew delegates on an experience through Newcastle and the Hunter Region. We focused on creating a good time - nothing more, nothing less. We moved away from traditional clubs and pubs and created our own events that didn’t feel anything like your average night out!

From having a party in a real gaol, to evening strolls along the coast in pyjamas, an open mic night featuring ‘dance dance revolution’, to a gala evening on Newcastle’s beautiful foreshore, the nights were new and exciting and everyone had a blast!

Incredible way to end GHC2016

NIGHT 5 GALA NIGHT: ILLUMINATE HONEYSUCKLE HOTEL

It has always been really important to us at NewGHC to make sure that when it comes to sustainability, we lead by example. We made a number of conscientious choices around the areas of food, catering, waste disposal, and carbon emissions that we are really proud of, and think that future AMSA conferences should build upon.

Food: GHC has historically been a vegetarian conference. Pre 2014, GHC was a completely meat free event! Since reintroducing meat at Sydney 2014, both Perth GHC and Newcastle GHC have made the decision to move back towards a low or no meat menu.

The pressure to appease delegates with meat is strong, so we opted for a low meat menu that we hoped non-vegetarian delegates could emulate in their post GHC lives. In addition, we included information in our delegate handbook about food sustainability, and had speakers discuss the necessity of reduced meat intake for environmental preservation.

Catering: The Newcastle Exhibition Centre changed suppliers to permanently use biodegradable plates, cups, and cutlery for all of their catered events from now onwards. We think that this is an important shift that needs to be replicated in catering and conference facilities Australia-wide as there’s a real need to reduce plastic consumption and the use of non-recyclables. We’re really proud that we helped Newcastle’s largest exhibition centre to make this shift.

Waste Disposal: NEX paired with a local composting company, Greenhands, to dispose of all our food waste, including cutlery, cups, and plates. This also reduces our use of plastic bags and our overall contribution to landfill. Furthermore, our compost waste is then sold onto local farmers, helping grow local produce. In addition to composting our inedible food waste, or edible food waste was donated to OzHarvest Newcastle, which distributed our leftovers to shelters, soup kitchens, and refugees all over the city.

Over the course of GHC we donated over 400kg of food, feeding over 900 meals to local disadvantaged people.

Carbon Emissions: We partnered with Carbon Country to offset the emissions produced by NewGHC. Each carbon credit was sourced directly from landholders in Cape York who are reducing their emissions through the management of the early dry season fire. Not only did we offset our event, we also supported some of the most remote farms in Australia.

...and yes, these doughnuts were served one morning tea at GHC 2016.

TREASURY Increasing registration numbers and sponsorship growth saw a revenue base approaching $500,000, and coupled with reducing expenditure created the highest recorded surplus of any GHC.

SPONSORSHIP We had a lot of success with our Sponsorship Portfolio, and felt that NewGHC helped strengthen bonds between old and new Sponsors. The total Sponsorship Revenue raised for NewGHC was over $70 000. Most sponsors went for a package deal with us and our major earning item was our Trade Show Booth.

Sponsorship however, did more than just bring in money. With the field hospital and disaster zone workshops aligning with the interests of a few sponsors, we were able to organise Defence Force Recruiting to set up a mobile intensive care unit and resuscitative bay. This created an immersive environment for delegates attending the two workshops. MIPS also organised a speaker – Dr Paul Alexander – to give a workshop on triaging in disaster zones.

Overall feedback from sponsors was universally positive. RACGP commented that they managed to hit their target for signups for the conference by the second day. Ardi from AMA said this was his favourite conference in the last few years due to delegate engagement.

Delegate engagement was propelled by our various competitions that were run across the conference including the Sponsorship Trail, Look For The Light (Scavenger Hunt Competition) and the new Instagram photo competition #sponoshots. We had over 150 entries in the Sponsorship Trail which was the standard affair of collecting a stamp with every sponsor.
