Time Refractor

Academic Project

Location: Hudson, NY

Teammate: Xiaoying Li

The natural process of sea level rise is so gradual that it may take years before we could perceive any major changes. Landscape design could perform as a time refractor, which would reveal the process of climate change and sea level rise to people. For the riverfront of the city of Hudson, we proposed to register the inundation level with landscape design while protecting the infrastructure and celebrating the local culture and history.

Academic Project

Location: Troy, NY Living Museum

The industrial belt in south Troy used to be home to iron works and manufacturing factories. Today most of them have been abandonded, while the industrial contaminants reamin on site. Nature began to take over, growing into wild gardens by the side of buildings and structures that are falling apart. The contrast between the living and the ruin creates a provocative landscape identity.

Located near the Iron Work Museum, this brownfield could become a living museum that remediates the soil contamination, revelas the industrial history, and brings more people to the Iron Work Museum nearby.

Phyto-Remediation Stragegy

Using the distance from the source of historical industrial pollution as the reference, a grid of phyto-remediation was created. Trees with remediation benefits will be planted on the grid. The density of planting decreses as the grid gets further away from the pollution source.

Caye Chapel 03

Professional Project

Location: Caye Chapel, Belize

Client: Thor Urbana

Project Manager: Aniko Kurczinak, Hyewon Su, Todd Girvin

Phases: Concept Design, Schematic Design, Design Development

The design team of Four Seasons Resort & Residences

Caye Chapel is dedicated to reconnect owners and guests to the wonder of nature. All hotel guest rooms and residences have beach access, which is screened from adjacent properties with native tropical plantings. The naturalized landscape connects people to amazing amenities including infinity-edge pools, spa, family club, dive center, overwater dining, & retail stores. The island is perched on the edge of the Belize Barrier Reef and the landscape design strive to protect native habitat and culture by implementing a nursery and boardwalk that connects a national geographic station with preserved mangrove. As the only supporting staff on the team, I learned to manage massive CAD base files, participate in the design process, coordinate with architects & engineers, and communicate with clients.

Professional Project

Location: Larkspur, CA

Client: Eden Hosing Partners, Education Housing Partners

Project Manager: Kendra Manning

Phases: Design Development, Construction Documents

Working with Eden Housing Partners, Education Housing Partners, and SVA architects, RHAA is designing amenity outdoor spaces for the multifamily residential project that integrate naturally into the existing hill, connects future residents to the great nature with view to the Bay, while providing opportinities to recreate and relax for different age groups.

The scope of work include courtyards on six different floor levels. Extensive studies were done for grading, pedestal paving systems, structure and planting on podium and native planting for steep slopes. We also actively coordinate with the architect and civil engineer in this process to make sure the design address the complex conditions of the site.

The planting design features a succulent border, a small edible garden, naturalistic herbaceous bands, and evergreen slope & borders. The planting palette is mostly composed of native drought-tolerant shrubs, trees, and groundcovers. The use of muhly grasses in combination with plants such as kangroo paw, lavander, and salvia, create a striking blend of different textures and colors. Ceanothus and agaves create a tough carpet on the slope area.

Kanai St. Regis Resort

Professional Project

Location: Mayan Riviera, Mexico

Client: Alhel Group

Project Manager: Hyewon Su

Phases: Design Development, Construction Documents

Kanai St.Regis Resort finds a privileged place in a lush forest of mangos and crystal-clear waters of the enchanting Mayan Riviera. The bespoke luxury style of the brand will reach the tourist area and will represent the third St. Regis hotel in Latin America. The property will have 124 rooms and suites, 32 villas, four restaurants, an exclusive Remede Spa, swimming pools facing the sea and two 18-hole golf courses The architecture of the hotel presents elements of white concrete and semi-transparent reflecting glass, which are its main components, complemented by local materials and elements of organic design that provide detail and presence. The semicircles of the residential areas contain green spaces at their intersections that function as vestibules leading to the stairs, as well as terraces suitable for observation. One of the greatest challenges for landscape design is that most of the design areas are on top of structures.
