JFCS to honor Jacob Garber’s legacy of giving at this year's Annual Benefit IN THIS
Long ago, a wise person who happened to work with older adults told me, “only the lucky get old.”
If you are of a certain age, those words are not just a simple statement, but a meaningful reminder that though there are inconveniences associated with aging, it is also a privilege not everyone receives. Unfortunately, meeting the needs of seniors who have the desire and ability to age in place does not come free, and isn’t easily funded. With all of the competing, compelling issues to support, addressing seniors’ needs often comes last.
At Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Minneapolis, our work serving the needs of older adults has been a time-tested and important component of our program delivery. We focus on three groups – those who are able to age in place with support; those who are caregivers; and those who are the “sandwich generation,” caring for their immediate families while also caring for aging parents.
Our services for older adults include Kosher Meals on Wheels, Garber Transportation, family care consultation, case coordination and care management, memory support programs such as Powerful Tools For Caregiving and Dementia Friends programming, Holocaust Survivor Support Services, Memory Care programming, shopping services and so much more.
Considering that so many of us will be aging, and caring for loved ones who are also aging, JFCS wants to ensure that our programs and compassionate staff
are prepared to meet the current and future needs of our families and community. That is why this year one of our fundraising focuses is on aging and all that is involved in offering the supports most people will need at some point – to both age in place with good health and safety, as well as care for those we love and support.
Jake Garber, of blessed memory, was a fan of JFCS in many ways, including our senior programming. One of his best friends, Sid Sharpe, was a volunteer driver in our transportation program. Jake would say that every day when Sid would show up for their daily card game after his JFCS transportation shift, he would joyfully rave about the transportation program and how much he loved “chauffering” his riders. When Sid passed, Jake made sure the program would continue with the resources needed to help sustain it.
We’ll honor Jake and his many contributions to JFCS at our Annual Benefit this December. We will also be sharing information throughout the year about our senior services to raise awareness about all that is offered, with hopes that you will be compelled, as Jake was, to help support this area of programming.
Here’s to being fortunate to grow old and to supporting our elders. Here for all. Always.
Judy Halper, JFCS Chief Executive Officer
By Chantel Jullie • ParentChild+ Program Manager
What an exceptional year it has been for the ParentChild+ program, both locally at JFCS and in collaboration with our partners across Minnesota!
ParentChild+ is a free in-home visiting program catering to families with children ages 18 months to 3 years over a two-year period. Our highly skilled Early Learning Specialists conduct bi-weekly 30-minute sessions in homes, providing free educational books and toys to foster children’s passion for learning through imaginative play and reading. At the core of ParentChild+ is the mission to empower parents as their child’s first and most important teacher.
Collaborating closely with families lies at the heart of our program. Throughout May and June, the ParentChild+ team dedicated time to honoring the remarkable achievements of our families who devoted two years to their children’s education. Each graduate was adorned with a graduation hat, a personalized certificate, a backpack, and a book.
Additionally, parents received a heartfelt gift—a magnet featuring their graduate’s picture. Individualized celebrations were held during the final visit with their Early Learning Specialist, allowing moments for reflection on the journey and the growth witnessed in each child. We are thrilled for our graduates and eagerly anticipate their bright futures as they embark on their educational paths in preschool and kindergarten!
In total, ParentChild+ Minnesota celebrated the graduation of 99 remarkable children. This included 45 graduates at JFCS; 7 at Cass County; 13 at Promise Neighborhood of Central MN St. Cloud; 13 at Intercultural Mutual Assistance Association Rochester; and 21 at Rice County.
Congratulations to our 2024 graduates! We extend our heartfelt gratitude for entrusting ParentChild+ to be a part of your educational journey.
Congratulations to our 2024 graduates!
ParentChild+ children compared to their socio-economic peers:
• 30% higher graduation rate
• 50% more likely to be ready for kindergarten
Friends of the Family Award will be presented at the JFCS Annual Benefit in memory of Jacob Garber
Jacob Garber’s father died when he was just a kid – he watched when his recently widowed mother declined support from a charity, as she believed the family would be able to hold their own. As the oldest child, Jacob took it upon himself to start collecting bottles, delivering papers – anything to help make money – as he became the “man of the house” at a young age. He went on to have a very successful career in the ball bearings industry, and despite seeing his mother decline charity as a kid, being philanthropic was always extremely important to him. Jacob, who died in 2014 at age 99, was a dedicated donor both in his lifetime and all the years since thanks to his legacy giving.
Jake, as he was known, was a longtime supporter of several organizations in the Twin Cities – including JFCS, where his legacy gifts support programs such as PJ Library, Hag Sameach, Academic Scholarships, Food Security, and of course, the Jacob S. Garber Transportation Program. His namesake program provides rides for adults who benefit from rides to activities that help keep them vital and engaged, such as card games, beauty shops, medical appointments, friends’ houses, grocery stores and more.
Thanks to his longtime support and legacy of giving, JFCS will honor Jake’s memory at its Annual Benefit in December with our annual Friends of the Family Award. It will be presented in memory of him and recognizes Frank Trestman (z’l), Kevin Brazner, and Sally Forbes Friedman for carrying out his wishes.
“His intention as a philanthropist was to do as much good as he could, but out of the limelight,” said JFCS CEO Judy Halper. “He didn’t want any attention or acknowledgement. Much of his philanthropy was provided through his estate after his passing to achieve this outcome.”
How Jake came to support the program that would later be renamed in his honor is perfectly representative of his personality. He enjoyed playing cards with friends at the Minnesota JCC and one of his friends, Sid Sharpe, was a volunteer driver with the program. Sid always talked about how great it was, and just based on that, Jake decided to provide financial support to the ride program. It previously had a different name and was renamed the Jacob S. Garber Transportation Program in 2018 thanks to Jake’s legacy gifts.
Sally Forbes Friedman, a member of the advisory committee, said the majority of his philanthropy was below the radar. “He was a humble man who did things anonymously,” said Sally, who knew Jake for many years. “He took care of a lot of things for a lot of people that no one will ever know.”
Despite a successful career, Jake kept an office for decades in the basement of a building on Minnetonka Boulevard in St. Louis Park. His home was similarly modest. When he died, his obituary was one sentence – as he directed it to be.
Sally met Jake years ago when she was practicing at Kaplan Strangis and Kaplan and was assigned to work with him on his estate. “Jake was single-handedly the most generous philanthropic person that I ever met,” she said. “He was so impressive in his nature about caring about the community and family.”
Frank Trestman knew Jake for decades – from the days when they would see each other at the Lincoln Del. Frank spent a lot of time talking to Jake about what types of programs he wanted to support, which included scholarships for college and camps, youth programs, Israel initiatives, and more. “Wonderful work is being done thanks to Jake’s estate,” said Kevin, Frank’s son-inlaw. “He would be very proud of the legacy that he left.”
Judy said Jake was kind-hearted and she always looked forward to conversations with him. He would share funny and amazing stories about his life, often remarking about his good fortune. “Jake’s love for children and his respect for helping older adults live out their lives with dignity are evident in his ongoing support for programs benefitting these individuals,” she said.
“Jake was single-handedly the most generous philanthropic person that I ever met”
"It honestly was so incredible visiting –I think all three of us experienced a positive afternoon together."
By Mindy Teele • Hag Sameach Program Manager
JFCS’ Hag Sameach program ensures joyous holiday celebrations for families and individuals in need by providing them with gifts and ritual items during the winter holidays and Passover. One of the ways we continue to offer meaningful experiences for everyone involved in our program is by getting feedback from volunteers and our program recipients.
Following the 2023 winter holidays, we surveyed our program recipients to find new ways to empower them in the referral process and to hear if the program is meeting their needs and expectations.
JFCS Senior Services hosted a training for JFCS staff about the current epidemic of loneliness, particularly in seniors as identified by the U.S. Surgeon General. This training spurred an internal conversation with Senior Services, Hag Sameach and Volunteer staff, wondering if we could strengthen the impact of the Hag Sameach program. We asked if recipients preferred our current method of having a volunteer drop off their gift packages or if they would enjoy having a delivery visitor who would spend some time with them. An overwhelming number of people stated that a visitor would mean so much to them.
Based on this feedback, JFCS established a pilot project to offer delivery visitors as an option for our Passover program. For this trial, we had a limited number of visits so we could gain insight if it would be a meaningful addition to the program. The feedback from the recipients and volunteers was unanimous – everyone loved it.
One visitor new to our program shared that, “It honestly was so incredible visiting – I think all three of us experienced a positive afternoon together.”
Another visitor reported a similar positive experience. “I just left the client’s house and we just clicked,” she said. This visitor had such a positive experience that she signed up to begin serving as an outreach visitor, which pairs members of the community with seniors for a chance to connect in person a couple times each month for outings and connection.
We know that isolation and loneliness often increase as people age and can be hard to overcome, due to a number of factors. One of the goals of this pilot
was to test different ways to foster meaningful connection. We were pleased to see that this highly individualized, person-centered approach provided both clients and volunteers an increased sense of connectedness, and that they simply enjoyed their time together.
This pilot project, a collaboration between the Hag Sameach program, Senior Services and Volunteer Engagement, was a wonderful success. Based on the meaningful impact it made for both the volunteer visitors and the recipients, we are excited to incorporate this addition into the Hag Sameach program to continue to find ways to be Here for all. Always.

We note the following five individuals who passed away between Jan. 1 and May 31, 2024. We thank their families for thoughtfully designating JFCS for their memorials. It is a beautiful tribute to those who passed and a fitting way to ensure their legacy will continue to enhance the lives of many others in the community. May their memories always be for a blessing.

1–Endowment funds designated to JFCS through the Jewish Community Foundation
2–New Endowment funds established since March 1, 2024
This list includes funds established through July 15, 2024.
Establishing an Endowment Fund is a wonderful and easy way to ensure that your commitment to Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Minneapolis continues over time. A fund can be established with a minimum gift of $2,500 (fulfilled in a number of ways) and can be used to benefit an area of special interest to you and/or your family or for general use to support JFCS’ many programs and services. Your contribution is also fully tax-deductible.
We also encourage the growth of your fund through additional donations from you, family or friends and investment performance. Any donations made to your fund are acknowledged with a beautiful card from JFCS indicating that a contribution was made to your fund. Distributions from Endowment Funds are drawn throughout the year to support JFCS programs and services, and a yearly fund report is sent to each fund holder indicating contributions, growth and allocations.

When couples reach a crisis point in their relationship, where termination of the relationship becomes an option, it can be a confusing, tense, and difficult time. Discernment Counseling was developed to help couples determine the path they would like to take. In Discernment Counseling these are:
• Path 1: Continue with the relationship without making changes; maintain the status quo
• Path 2: End the relationship
• Path 3: Commit to six months of actively engaging in couples counseling to work on healing the relationship
The Counseling team at JFCS is pleased to now offer Discernment Counseling as a modality to help couples on the brink of ending their relationship. This modality is currently offered on a self-pay basis.
What is Discernment Counseling?
Discernment Counseling is an approach designed to work with couples who are contemplating ending their relationship. Couples who seek out Discernment Counseling are typically “mixed agenda” couples, meaning one partner is “leaning-in” and wants to stay together and one partner is “leaning-out” and thinks it is best to end the relationship.
Typically, Discernment Counseling lasts no more than five or six sessions, and may last for only one. Samantha Shepherd, a JFCS Therapist trained in this modality, describes Discernment Counseling as “a short-term, brief intervention to help couples decide if they want
to ‘do the work’ in changing their relationship.” With Discernment Counseling, couples are supported as they take a deeper look at their relationship –examining what has happened in their relationship and how each person has contributed to the problems within it. This is meant to provide each person with understanding and clarity, and ultimately help them decide which of the three paths they would like to take.
Is Discernment Counseling the same as Couples Counseling?
Discernment Counseling is not the same as couples counseling. While the goals of couples counseling are to help partners address issues within their relationship and heal the relationship, the goal of Discernment Counseling is simply to provide clarity for the couple on what they want to do: maintain the status quo, end the relationship, or commit to six months of couples counseling.
What happens in sessions?
Discernment Counseling sessions look a little different than couples counseling sessions. “During sessions, there is a cadence of meeting separately and together, and at the end, the partners decide if they would like to ‘opt in’ for another session,” Shepherd explains. Sessions are longer than typical counseling sessions, allowing for the therapist to meet individually with each person and to meet as a couple. The individual time provides space for each person to explore what happened in the relationship, how they contributed
Discernment Counseling was developed to help couples determine the path they would like to take.
…the goal of Discernment Counseling is simply to provide clarity…
to the problems in the relationship, and what they want to do. When the couple meets together with the therapist, they are each given an opportunity to summarize their takeaways and to share what steps they would like to take. What are the benefits?
Over the course of these sessions, each person gains clarity on what they would like to do. The exploration of the relationship and one’s own contributions to the problems allows the couple to develop more understanding of what happened in the relationship. For couples who choose to engage in couples counseling, the acknowledgement of their own contributions and the commitment to actively engage and “do the work” can create a more effective starting place for the couples counseling sessions. For couples who choose to end the relationship, there tends to be increased willingness to cooperate throughout the separation period, and there are reports of more cordiality toward one another. …the acknowledgement of their own contributions and the commitment to actively engage and “do the work”…
JFCS hosted its 114th Annual Meeting on June 6, where we held elections for our Board of Directors. We welcomed those being elected for a first three-year term including Mel Dickstein, Alexis Kessler, Noah Lipshultz, Ryan Malashock, Dan Mosow, Mia Posada, Danielle Rubin and Elyse Rabinowitz.
Staff milestone anniversaries were honored at the event and we presented longtime, dedicated volunteers Marcia Williams and Kate Williams (mother and daughter) with the 2024 JFCS Exemplary Service Award. Marcia and Kate, who volunteer for JFCS’ Hag Sameach program, spoke about their experiences:
How did you originally start volunteering with JFCS?
Marcia : I work as a Care Coordinator and one of my peers told me about JFCS and how amazing they are in helping those in need. I see first-hand in the community the large number of Minnesotans that are in need.
Kate: It's hard to remember! I like to collect kids toys throughout the year to donate to Toys for Tots at holiday time. I think I had over done it one year... and was looking for other organizations to support in the area. When my mom's co-worker sent her a digital flier about the JFCS holiday program, it was perfect timing. Hag Sameach Program Manager Mindy Teele made it so easy and enjoyable to be part of the team. I felt right away we were making a difference. And the rest is history.
What draws you to volunteering for the Hag Sameach program?
Marcia : I love that it is personalized – that there are basic needs provided, along with fun and personal items that make Hag Sameach personal.
Kate: I love being able to create a little holiday magic for families in need. "Shopping" in the warehouse based on people's requests is a wonderful window into what a (nondenominational) Santa must feel like. It's pure joy. Plus... gifts are my love language. It's the perfect role for me.
How has volunteering for JFCS made an impact on you?
Marcia : I love that I can do something with my daughter that is meaningful.
Kate: It's humbling and an important reminder of life's true gifts. I've always loved that JFCS accepts and helps all. I wish more did the same.
Do you have a favorite memory/story of your time volunteering?
Marcia : While shopping in the warehouse, it is so fun to find the perfect item that a child is wishing for!
Kate: One year, mom and I volunteered to drop off present bundles in the area. One family, when they opened the door, let out cries of delight when they saw the bags and asked, "Is this all for us?" The visit left me floating on air. What a fantastic feeling.
How do you feel about being the recipient of JFCS’ award?
Marcia : My joy is always found in the giving. I am blessed to be able to pay it forward. I am honored to be part of a wonderful organization.
Kate: Honestly, it gives me imposter syndrome a bit. Though I usually enjoy the spotlight, being in one for good deeds is conflicting. I'll just say that it's my honor to have been able to make a small impact.

Twin Cities Pride 2024 was an absolute delight! Thank you to all of our incredible community partners, volunteers, and JFCS staff members who helped staff the booth during Twin Cities Pride weekend. An additional thank you to the Minneapolis Rabbinical Association and Rabbi Stiefel for their assistance with facilitating the Ask-A-Rabbi Section of the booth, and to Hazzan Dulkin and the Cantors Assembly for the use of a Torah for the Pride Shabbat Service.
This year was marked with a joyful Pride Shabbat coled by Rabbi Aaron Weininger and Rabbi Heather Renetzky, with over 80 people in attendance. A newly added Oneg sponsored by Adath Jeshurun invited people to mingle, reconnect and meet new friends. We’d like to also extend thanks to Heritage Judaica, for the use of its kippot and tallitot during the service.
J-Pride participants and staff were joined by many folks from across the Twin Cities, including Mayim Rabim and St. Paul Jewish Federation among others, to toss candy, blow bubbles and march in the Twin Cities Pride Parade. JFCS’ PJ Library program led a storytime and craft activity for families. New to the J-Pride booth this year was an opportunity to share free PJ Library books, which was a meaningful way for the many families who visited the J-Pride booth to connect.
This year has been a particularly significant year for J-Pride, as the designation of Minnesota as a Trans Refuge state has meant an influx of new community members and new avenues of connection with current residents. We met a significant number of folks who stopped by the booth who were new to Minnesota and were excited that J-Pride exists as a pillar and source of connection for the Jewish LGBTQ+ community in Minnesota.
J-Pride kicked off this year’s Pride at the end of May with a visit to the JeanNickolaus Tretter Collection in Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Studies archives at the University of Minnesota to take an in-depth look at the history of J-Pride and the LGBTQ+ Jewish community – I think we can definitely say that this Pride was one for the history books!
Thank you to everyone who visited the booth, spun the “spinny” wheel, marched with us, and shared our events – we hope you’ll join us next year!
