Compassion – providing highest quality care and support through all stages of life

Inclusion – treating people of all ages, genders, sexual orientations, races, religions and abilities with dignity and respect

If you listen to the radio or watch television, you may have heard a recent advertisement for virtual therapy. The ad begins by stating that each year, people get a book filled with 365 empty pages, each one waiting to be filled in. The ad goes on to promote therapy as a tool for helping people to fill in those blank pages. It is a compelling idea to think of our individual lives as clean sheets of paper awaiting our ups and downs, achievements and disappointments, gains and losses, and insights and missed opportunities.

It's also been noted that organizations and businesses are ultimately made up of these same individuals. Well-regarded businessmen and women from Steve Jobs to Oprah Winfrey have said in their own voices that success starts with hiring and retaining the right people, and respecting and understanding the people you serve.

At Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Minneapolis, we take our place in the community seriously. When we say we are Here for all. Always, we undertake the mission of creating an environment where everyone feels they belong and can be served. In 2024, we experienced increased requests for service in many of our program areas. From food security to mental health assistance, transportation to financial assistance, JFCS was an essential source of help to thousands of individuals and families.

While the vast majority of the service we deliver is geographically in the Minneapolis/Hennepin County area, JFCS is now providing early childhood development and literacy through our home visiting program (ParentChild+) in five locations throughout the state. People enrolled in Vocational Rehabilitation funded by DEED (Department of Employment and Economic Development) can live anywhere in Minnesota and be served by JFCS.

365 'pages' filled with hope and boundless compassion

Our participation in a nationwide service launched by our national association, the Network of Jewish Human Service Agencies, means JFCS Career Service staff are assisting people wherever they live in the U.S. Closer to home, at least 50% of our counseling clients prefer to receive telehealth service wherever they are – at home, on vacation, at work, wherever! And we are meeting that need.

More and more, 2024 became known as the year that was “Post-COVID” or equally sad, the year that saw a rise in anti-Semitism and hate directed at a variety of ethnic, racial, gender/identity, and religious groups. To respond, JFCS provided education and training focused on safety, self-management in difficult times, and programs intended to address diversity and inclusion. On an advocacy level, we united with a variety of partners to advance and promote the people we serve and the needs they represent, consistent with our mission.

As the saying goes, with so much to do, we could write a book! In fact, we have 365 blank pages and a corresponding number of days to respond, applying the boundless compassion and exceptional expertise of our professional and caring staff. Thank you for your contributions of support, time, and treasure. We can do more because you do more.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS annual report

For thousands of people from the Jewish and broad community, JFCS remains committed to our mission to provide essential services to help sustain healthy relationships, ease suffering and offer support in times of need. We are Here for all. Always.

EDUCATION AND LEARNING

Addiction and Recovery Services created an online resource guide that includes both local and national resources to support a variety of addiction and recovery needs – it was supported by the Matt Shapiro Addiction Resource Fund, established by Marilyn and Ralph Shapiro in memory of their son, Matt.

Over 300 people attended the 24th Annual Twin Cities Jewish Community Mental Health Education Conference, which works to raise awareness, reduce stigma and provide comfort to those in need.

The Jewish Youth Mentoring Program launched an intergenerational mentoring model to engage seniors and youth in meaningful activities and education.

The ParentChild+ program provided over 16,000 home visits to 334 children and their families and had a site visit from the Minnesota Department of Children, Youth and Family, the newly-established state department that provides funding and oversight to the program.

Professional and Community Education provided 21 trainings and events serving 841 people, including presenting at the National Council on Family Relations’ Annual Conference

CAREER SERVICES

The Career Development program served 208 dislocated workers in 2024, 68 of whom obtained full-time employment at the average wage of $42.65. We provided training to 140 people in various IT pathways, and 50 of them got jobs at the average wage of $38.77.

The Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP) served 548 people; 224 participants were employed, and 63 participants exited the program due to obtaining familysustaining wages. Career Services provided more than $1.3 million in educational grants, as well as wrap-around support resources like gas cards, childcare subsidies, and more to help individuals achieve stability and financial security.

The Vocational Rehabilitation program served 95 participants, 55 of whom were employed at $19.83/hour.

COMMUNITY SERVICES

Disability Services’ Caring Connections program for Jewish adults with disabilities brought together 424 participants for eight impactful events and provided more than 40 home visits – JFCS is the only agency in the Twin Cities that offers this opportunity for one-on-one, in-home visits for Jewish adults with disabilities.

For the Passover holiday, JFCS’ Hag Sameach (Happy Holidays) program provided 316 individuals with customized gift bags of Passover food and ritual items. During the winter season, Hag Sameach served 813 individuals by delivering customized packages with gifts for every family member and pet, essential household needs, and ritual items. Another 35 households were supported with Beyond the Holidays, providing necessary items through the year.

983 LGBTQ+ Jews and allies came together at over 40 events with J-Pride. New in 2024, J-Pride launched monthly Yiddish Cultural Cafés, a series exploring contemporary and historical LGBTQ+ Yiddish culture, made possible by the Yiddish Book Center’s Yiddish Arts and Culture Initiative.

PJ Library delivered 16,399 free books to 1,450 Jewish children from birth to age 13 and hosted 61 events with 1,957 participants. A major success was the first-ever PJ Library Grand Tea in November, where 180 Jewish children and their grandparents/special adults came together at JFCS for this special event.

The Food Security program connects people to food resources in the community and reduces barriers to food security. The program provided 107 emergency food boxes to clients and community members. The kosher Meals on Wheels program delivered 10,100 meals, seeing a 32% increase in clients served from the beginning to the end of the year, and delivered 150 grocery orders to PRISM clients facing a transportation barrier

COUNSELING & MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES

The JFCS Counseling program held 4,133 sessions and completed 86 diagnostic assessments, serving adults, couples and children/adolescents. It also implemented new services such as SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) and a Grief and Loss Psychoeducation Group, as well as provided 10 presentations in the community.

The Mental Health Support Services (MHSS) program updated several internal processes to improve efficiency, communication, and services to more than 260 clients.

Intake and Resource Connection (IRC) expanded its team, responded to almost 2,200 calls, and successfully administered its Emergency Auto Repair Program, granting 24 applicants over $33,000 in auto repair assistance.

SENIOR SERVICES

The Senior Services program began screening clients for food security and social isolation, recommending appropriate services as needed. This included offering extended visits during Hag Sameach deliveries to bring people together and reduce isolation. We provided support to 47 Holocaust survivors in 2024.

It piloted intergenerational programming to bring seniors and teens together to reduce isolation.

Senior Services also provided 697 hours of shopping and 143 hours of accompanied transportation – hours that would have likely been provided by a family caregiver.

The Garber Transportation program provided over 5,500 one-way rides to medical appointments, errands, and social activities.

Legacy Giving

A late-in-life friendship leads to a legacy of education and mentorship through JFCS

One regular area of brightness for Eric King-Smith during his later years was his regular visits with Bill Gershan, ever since the two were paired through JFCS’ Outreach Visitor program. Eric spent much of his later years caring for his wife, Roxie, as her health declined –despite his own advanced age – and his visits with Bill were one regular area of respite for him.

Bill found he had much to talk about with Eric, who spent his career as an engineer. The two met up every couple weeks, often going out for breakfast or lunch, going on walks, and visiting museums. They would walk from Eric’s place in the Kenwood neighborhood to The Kenwood restaurant and talk the whole way. “Bill and my dad just clicked,” said Eric’s daughter, Judy Uridge. “They could talk for hours. They were both so diverse in their skills, knowledge, and experiences.”

about any subject,” Bill said. “He was very grateful for our friendship. He said that many times to me. He really enjoyed getting together.”

A native Australian

He was always into mentoring and being able to help people reach their best potential. “ ”

Eric grew up in Australia and became an electrical engineering professor at the University of Melbourne – he was spending a year on sabbatical in Ann Arbor, Michigan, when there were cutbacks in the engineering program in Melbourne; he ended up staying in Michigan to study bio-medical engineering. He received his Ph.D. in biomedical engineering at the University of Michigan. He eventually got a job at Medtronic, which brought him and his family to the Twin Cities, and he later worked at 3M for many years.

Eric was always a big proponent for education and mentoring kids.

springboard to work on other projects and specifically reach out to us for services as he was aging,” said Dana Rubin, JFCS Development Director.

Thanks to his wonderful experience with Bill and the Outreach Visitor program, he arranged to leave a legacy gift to JFCS prior to his death in 2023 at the age of 97. His family used these funds to establish an endowment at the agency, the Eric King-Smith Academic Scholarship and Mentoring Fund.

“He was always into mentoring and being able to help people reach their best potential,” said his son, Bernie King-Smith. “He would be thrilled to know that his legacy gift was being used for this purpose.”

‘Loved being around people’

Bill said Eric always had great memories of what he used to do for his career. “He was a very knowledgeable guy and could talk

After retiring, he regularly tutored students at a local high school. His involvement at JFCS began many years ago with Jewish Vocational Services (now Career Services).

“His affinity for helping others through this program served as a

Despite living in the U.S. for years, Eric never lost his Australian accent. “It was always a topic of conversation and it would lead to so many different things,” Judy said. “He loved being around people and learning from people.” Eric always had nicknames for his kids and grandkids, who called him “Pop.” He loved to tell family history and share stories.

Eric King-Smith was a participant in JFCS’

Outreach Visitors

program and left a legacy gift to the agency

As he aged, the Outreach Visitor program and his regular visits with Bill played a vital role in his well-being. “I encourage services like the Outreach Visitors program for anyone,” Bernie said. “As you struggle to get through the day, having someone to talk to that you trust does wonders.”

Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Minneapolis invites you to be part of our Passover program!

Each year, JFCS provides referred individuals and families in need with a gift bag of ritual Passover foods and other meaningful items to help celebrate this holiday. As part of JFCS’ Hag Sameach (Happy Holidays) program, this gift is often a family’s only opportunity to obtain the items it needs to celebrate the rich traditions of Passover.

When you make a donation to the Hag Sameach Adopt a Family for Passover program, you truly make this special holiday a happy one for those in need by helping cover the cost of each bag. Last year JFCS served about 240 families for Passover and the need will be just as great this year. Passover begins at sundown on April 12.

For assistance in receiving Passover ritual items/foods, call our confidential line at 952.542.4843 or fill out the self-referral form on the JFCS website at jfcsmpls.org/passover-self-referral.

Hag Sameach is sponsored by the Clara Ruth Kaner Children’s Fund, a designated fund of the Minnesota Jewish Community Foundation, Karen and Russ Rubin, and the Jacob Garber Endowment Fund of the Minnesota Jewish Community Foundation

Staff Accomplishments

Human Resources Manager

Jackie Kay was appointed to the St. Louis Park Human Rights Commission, which advises the city council on how to ensure equal opportunity and participation in housing, employment, public service, public accommodations, and education.

Administrative Assistant Wendy Pedersen completed a course, “Certificate in Healing Environments for Body, Mind, and Spirit,” through the Network of Jewish Human Service Agencies’ Academy for Education and Advancement. The 16-hour course focused on creating healthy environments that promote healing in alternative ways such as art, music, and sound therapy.

Intake Counselor

Skylar Peterson was appointed to a six-year term with the Minnesota Social Service Association’s (MSSSA) Conference Committee. The 22-person Committee plans and executes the annual MSSA Education Conference & Expo, attended by social service providers across Minnesota and beyond. She was then selected for a sub-committee focusing on fostering engagement and inclusion for conference attendees.

Professional and Community Education Program Manager

Leah Persky presented her research on the pandemic’s effect on children at the National Council of Family Relations Conference in Bellevue, Washington. The title of her ongoing research is “How are the COVID Kindergarteners doing today? Understanding pandemic impacts on students and their families: The Creation of the Adverse Pandemic Experiences Assessment.” (See page 16 for more)

Persky, a Parent Coach, also wrote an article, “Parent Coaching to Meet the Changing Needs of Parents,” which was published in the National Council of Family Relations’ printed and online newsletters.

Addiction and Recovery Services

Coordinator Jennifer Fukuda completed her training and received her Community Trainer Certification to lead Overdose Response Training through the Steve Rummler Hope Network. Jennifer is able to offer this training in an effort to equip people to learn to save a life and reduce the stigma associated with addiction and harm reduction in our community.

Fukuda, as a current graduate student of Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School of Addiction Studies, also was named as a 2025 fellow through the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC) Minority Fellowship Program in Addiction Counseling. As a fellow, Jennifer was awarded funds for her education and will be attending several trainings throughout the year that will benefit both her education and the work she does as an Addiction and Recovery Coordinator at JFCS.

How are the COVID kindergarteners doing today?

Iwas able to attend the National Conference on Family Relations (NCFR) Conference recently in Bellevue, Washington. NCFR is the national professional organization focused on understanding families through interdisciplinary research, theory, and practice. I created an assessment tool to better understand the experiences of families who had young children during the pandemic, and my proposal to share the research was accepted into the conference.

I began this research because I have been thinking a lot about the long-term impacts of the pandemic ever since it “ended” in 2023. I think about how three years of disrupted school, life, health, and social development were impacted for young kids and wondering how these experiences impact them today. COVID -related stressors included the closing of schools, economic hardship, loss of loved ones, interruption of everyday routines, the switch to remote learning, increased fear and uncertainty in daily life, and social isolation for many (Brooks et al., 2020; Cluver et al., 2020). These are diverse and major traumas that many children and families have not fully processed or healed from.

Children and their families are still impacted by the traumas of the pandemic – leading to generalizations about poor behavior and lack of academic success for students today, hence the term “COVID Kindergartners” to identify the children who began school in 2019 (Molnár and Hermann, 2023; Petrilli, 2021). This cohort is now in fourth or fifth grade, and their experiences are also applicable to other children who missed crucial years of learning and social development (Petrilli, 2021).

Research indicates that student behavior is worse today than prior to the pandemic, primarily due to lack of student social-emotional development and limited school attendance during formative years. Many educators highlight the high behavioral and academic needs of the cohort of current elementary students in the post-COVID era as a consequence of the interruption of school due to the pandemic.

In 2021, 87 percent of public schools reported that the pandemic negatively impacted student socio-emotional development, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. It is necessary to better understand the

needs of children and their families in order to provide holistic support; this is where an assessment tool comes in.

This topic impacts me personally and professionally. My children were in kindergarten and third grade when the pandemic started. They have faced a variety of challenges that I link back to the pandemic. As a coach, I also work with many families who are working to support their young children; the challenges they are working through seem more challenging today. Also, it doesn’t seem like there is much attention given to this subject after the world returned to post-pandemic life and business.

How can we support healing and resilience?

families

This research will help to inform multiple JFCS programs including: Parent Coaching, Counseling, Mental Health Services and ParentChild+ ; these programs are all equipped to help support families and children and consistently work to meet the changing needs of our community.

While the research is still in the early stages, I believe the results of it will assist social service agencies and schools in their efforts to holistically support families and help to heal and recover from past pandemic-related challenges. Devoting time and research to this topic is important and will allow for a better grasp of these dynamic needs.

I am continuing to work on this project and would be very happy if you could take a short survey and/or share with friends and family to enhance the research efforts. It will take just a few minutes to complete. The questions are designed for families who had children aged 1-10 during the pandemic years of 2020-23, applying to families with children born 2010-19.

It is informed by the CDC-Kaiser ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences), which explores how traumas experienced early in life are connected to long-term health outcomes. More traumas experienced as a child are connected with poorer mental and physical health outcomes.

All information collected is anonymous and cannot be traced back to an individual or family. The data collected will allow for a better understanding of the diverse impacts of the pandemic on children and their families. If you have any questions or want to discuss this, please reach out to me at lpersky@jfcsmpls.org. I will keep you posted on the next steps in this research.

In Memory Of

We note the following eight individuals who passed away between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31, 2024. We thank their families for thoughtfully designating JFCS for their memorials. It is a beautiful tribute to those who passed and a fitting way to ensure their legacy will continue to enhance the lives of many others in the community. May their memories always be for a blessing.

Leave Your Legacy, for Generations to Come

Endowment Funds

Establishing an Endowment Fund is a wonderful and easy way to ensure that your commitment to Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Minneapolis continues over time. A fund can be established with a minimum gift of $2,500 (fulfilled in a number of ways) and can be used to benefit an area of special interest to you and/or your family or for general use to support JFCS’ many programs and services. Your contribution is also fully tax-deductible.

We also encourage the growth of your fund through additional donations from you, family or friends and investment performance. Any donations made to your fund are acknowledged with a beautiful card from JFCS indicating that a contribution was made to your fund. Distributions from Endowment Funds are drawn throughout the year to support JFCS programs and services, and a yearly fund report is sent to each fund holder indicating contributions, growth and allocations.

For more information, contact Development Director Dana Rubin at 952-542-4803 or drubin@jfcsmpls.org.
