I

t’s hard to put pen to paper without addressing the dark times in which we find ourselves. However, while we all continue to follow the world’s desperately sad events, and offer support in our own ways, our daily lives continue both at home and in the workplace. My workplace is a creative sphere in which I’m thankful to be surrounded by inventive people, including those who have contributed this issue. I’m thankful for that because it reminds us of the joy that human beings are capable of giving through their creative talents. That, in turn, reminds us that humans are innately kind and ultimately driven by the knowledge that their work will bring happiness to others. This is what I truly believe and it’s what I keep reminding myself of. I do hope that this issue can act as a distraction and that you will find glimmers of beauty in its pages, which have been produced by some of the most talented people in our industry. I am proud to have them on board for this spring issue of MINE – an issue that marks our relaunch. It’s so great to be back – and, if we’ve learned anything from recent events, it’s about seizing the day, making it our own, taking joy in anything we can and being grateful. Enjoy!

f Jessica Plummer is not on your radar, please recalibrate that radar. But in a world where we’re deluged by a waterfall of daily ‘newness’ – not to mention a need and desire to be constantly updated with information – we’d be forgiven to switching off to much of it. New launches, new talent, new anything… it’s weirdly addictive but exhausting. I’ve become exceptionally good – and fast! – at filtering. Back to Jessica. How joyous it was to discover her and her oh-so-brilliant performance in the BBC and HBO Max adaptation of JP Delaney’s best-selling thriller The Girl Before. She plays Emma, opposite the perfectly cast Gugu MbathaRaw and David Oyelowo. Reviews have hailed Jessica as the highlight of the series and dubbed her ‘the next Suranne Jones’. The drama showcases her natural talent in multiple ways but, like many viewers, I found Jessica as a person to be the real fascination. Actors upgrade to stars when

they display a certain something that pushes us as viewers to follow them and their work beyond the medium in which they appear. And Jessica is so unbelievably good at what she does that you are helplessly drawn in, as if you know her.

Some have heard of her from her first major role, in 2017’s How to Talk to Girls at Parties, alongside Elle Fanning and Nicole Kidman. Others know her as Chantelle Atkins in EastEnders. Some may even remember her beginnings in the top-ten-charting girl band Neon Jungle, which Jessica says gave her the grit and teeth for the acting world: ‘I learnt early on that not everything that glitters is gold, nor is everything a given, and to take every opportunity. But, equally, it really is okay to go back to real life when the show’s over.” When I joke about how fabulous life could have been in a girl band – a band that played with Jessie J and Taylor Swift – 32

she remains adamant that all roads lead to acting: ‘On my seventh birthday, my dad gave me the Titanic script, as every day after school I’d sit down and watch it.’ I can’t imagine my own seven-year-old knowing what to do with a Hollywood movie script, but the young Jessica was thrilled: ‘This and Jennifer Lopez made me realise that – through dancing, singing, acting and simply performing – you could let go and feel a huge sense of release and enjoyment.’

Now Jessica has secured her dream job, she feels it’s a constant learning curve, as opposed to simply turning up on set, day after day, and getting on with it. ‘One of the hardest aspects for me is allowing myself to be vulnerable, to completely let go,’ she admits. ‘In The Girl Before, I had to dance around in one particular scene where I was all alone, and the key was to appear carefree – even though I had thirty pairs of eyes behind the cameras staring at me.’ Jessica thrives on such challenges, believing that is where the opportunities for improvement arise. ‘One thing I’m good at is taking risks,’ she declares. ‘I don’t turn down many opportunities that are out of my comfort zone. Your craft is better if you explore and, while everyone is different, I learn my art by being with other actors. I learnt a lot from

watching David [Oyelowo] and Ben [Hardy] in The Girl Before.’

Unexpectedly, Jessica tells me that one thing that really helps her is to give her characters a fragrance. Emma’s was Jo Malone’s Lime Basil and Mandarin: ‘It has a positive punch.’ Having watched the series, this makes total sense. The styling of a character is a huge element of every actor’s work when they inhabit and portray a person. Fragrance aside, this is something that she is more than happy to leave to the professionals: ‘I love fashion and am a shopping addict, but I don’t have a set style. If anything, I love stealing ideas from characters, as I did with Emma.’

On our cover shoot, Jessica proves the easiest person I’ve ever worked with: big smiles all round with an abundance of positive energy. That said, as both of us joke, life’s not so hard when you’re being styled in Chanel top to toe. ‘Give me trainers over heels any day!’ she smiles. ‘I love to look effortless, even though I aspire to a glamorous look. As I’ve got older, I appreciate more timeless pieces. I’d love to own a sustainable capsule wardrobe that will last forever and

that I can pass on to my daughter.’ I tell her that I love the neat and chic French style of the Chanel wardrobe and jewellery. ‘They’re the type of pieces I wear in my dreams,’ she agrees. ‘And, for those who know me, I’m turning thirty this year – and I really love jewellery!’ As for hair and makeup, she says it’s like acting: experimenting and enjoying the moment. ‘I loved the red lip Zoë [Taylor, makeup maestro] gave me, which I wouldn’t normally be confident enough to wear. But she chose the right shade and it looked amazing. I also loved the freckles! She made me feel like we were in the Caribbean. ‘As for my hair, it’s my safety blanket so I feel best when it’s out. But my curls need to be groomed, so I was happy. You need to feel happy and confident to do your best work.’ I’ll definitely be seeing Jessica again – on-screen and, I hope, in person. She’s the kind of woman you can’t help wanting to be friends with.

y day he runs one of Belgravia’s most coveted hair salons. By night he wins one award after the other. Nominated for Best British Hair awards for twenty-five consecutive years – as well as being International Hairdresser of the Year and a three-time British Hairdresser Award Afro category winner – there is nothing Errol Douglas doesn’t know about expert hairstyling. He specialises in curls and Afro hair, and his clients include Rihanna, Lewis Hamilton… and, now, MINE cover star Jessica Plummer. ERROL’S TOP TIPS TO CREATE OR ENHANCE CURLS ‘Learning how to use a diffuser will help achieve volume at home. Use products that give your hair hold, such as a contouring gel, and nourishing and conditioning products such as an oil or masque. ‘For the best results, I apply styling products to wet hair to encourage curls to form and help them hold their shape. ‘If you apply them to damp hair, you need to redefine the curls. Scrunching your hair will help.’

1 2

Dry your hair naturally, with a towel, rather than with a hairdryer.

Use a diffuser to define curls. Avoid blowing your hair directly – that causes frizz. To form curls, pin your hair up as you dry it. Leave it for five to ten minutes to cool down, then you’ll have the perfect curl.

3

To maximize the sheen, add a mist of a light holding spray oil.

The Curl Manifesto collection by Kérastase was used on Jessica’s hair for our cover shoot:

WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES OF CARING FOR CURLS? ‘Detangling! Textured hair can get quite knotty, especially overnight with friction against a pillow. Using a silk hair turban or pillow can help minimise that. A great shampoo automatically does it too, while the stylers condition and care for the curls. ‘When you’re washing curly hair, minimize friction and don’t be vigorous. A good tip is to apply oil to the hair first and leave it for five minutes, before washing it with a curl-dedicated shampoo to ease the friction and detangle.’ AND WHAT ARE THE MAIN CHALLENGES OF CARING FOR VERY CURLY HAIR? ‘Very curly hair needs more nourishment and moisture, and typically less hold than regular curly hair. It can tolerate a richer oil and heavier bases as it absorbs those ingredients better, due to the dryness and fragility of the texture.’ ONE THING THAT SOMEONE WITH CURLY HAIR MAY NOT KNOW… ‘People with curly hair often don’t fully understand their curl pattern. Celebrating the House of Creed’s new fragrance Wind Flowers

84

Though her demands were many, Queen Victoria’s one and only fragrance command was Creed. The ultimate luxury fragrance house counts some of history’s most inspirational women as loyal fans. Now the journey continues, fuelled by an endless passion to create the most captivating female scents

A

s one of the most iconic fragrance houses of our time, Creed conjures up images of luxury and beauty. Those images are tied with a history so long and rich that nothing quite compares. Most intriguing are its origins as a royal tailoring house from which, one day, Henry Creed delivered to King George III a pair of scented gloves. The king later commissioned Royal English Leather, which captured the hearts of some of Europe’s most influential women. Queen Victoria – George III’s granddaughter – appointed Creed official supplier to the royal household. And in 1854, under the patronage of Napoleon III and the Empress Eugénie, Creed moved its headquarters to Paris, with a client list of socially elite women. For more than 260 years, it has inspired and attracted powerful women from royals and socialites to artists and visionaries. As current heir and perfumer Erwin Creed puts it, ‘Our creations are a journey through time, like a bridge between generations, because the past is the strength of our future.’ Over the centuries, seven generations of the Creed family have produced more than two hundred fragrances. Many believe a rare creative sprit to be the secret of its success. Erwin and his perfumier father Olivier travel far and wide to source and research materials worthy of the alluring concepts that come to life in their Fontainebleau factory. When Aventus for Her – the feminine counterpart to the acclaimed Aventus – was launched in 2016, its success was spectacular. Stores sold out and it became ubiquitous at fashionable parties. For that scent, Olivier Creed took inspiration from the famous women who had worn Creed and who had bespoke fragrances designed for them. Aventus for Her was created for the modernday bold and sensual woman who, like those historic figures, is destined to leave a mark. The spirited top notes of green apple, pink pepper and lemon lead to grounding lilac, rose, and blackcurrant, while base notes of patchouli, musk and sandalwood envelop you. The woody and floral scent Royal Princess Oud – launched the year before – was a seductive and feminine take on a classic. The striking bottle nods to the red riding habits that Creed made for royal women, while rare and luxurious ingredients invoke strength and glamour. Raspberry, bergamot, grapefruit and pineapple are among the top notes. Soft orris butter, pretty jasmine, powdery iris and rose flow into the solar notes

Below, from top Aventus for Her, Royal Princess Oud, Love in White and Wind Flowers

and base notes of warm oud vanilla, patchouli, musk and cedarwood. For the woman looking for something more whimsical, Love in White is deeply romantic. A testament to Creed’s skilled craftsmanship, it blends ingredients from the four corners of the world. The result is a scent that is soft, floral and carefree, yet sophisticated. Reminiscent of the blossoming trees of Provence on the first days of spring, it blends orange zest, apple, apricot, narcissus and magnolia with base notes of musk and cedarwood. And now, Creed presents us with Wind Flowers, which Olivier Creed has dubbed the new ‘queen’ of the house’s female fragrance portfolio. More than five years in the making, this bright and brilliant scent is inspired by the strength and grace of a dancer’s flowing movements. It opens with sweet jasmine, wrapped around zesty Tunisian orange blossom and fruity peach. At its heart, captivating jasmine and tuberose petals add depth and texture. Warm sandalwood, creamy praline, hazy iris and musk are the final touches that bring this dusky floral scent to life and make it the illustrious fragrance house’s latest success story – but assuredly not its last. GROOMING

THE DOCTOR WILL SE E YOU NOW MINE meets a man with a magic touch: aesthetic physician Dr Wassim Taktouk

O

nce upon a time, aesthetic physisians were only for the rich and famous. Now many women – and some men – consult them. Dr Wassim Taktouk has risen to fame within the industry since opening an ultra-chic Knightsbridge clinic in 2021. With a waiting list up to seven months’ long, and a growing clientele of royals and red-carpet actresses, he is a doctor in demand. CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHAT YOU DO?

Years ago, you had to grow old gracefully or have a facelift. There was nothing in between. Nowadays, technology, science and expertise allow us to make choices. We have nonsurgical interventions, which are often better than outright surgery, with minimal downtime. This is where myself and other doctors in my field can help. My responsibility is understanding the cutting-edge science in my field and knowing how best to execute it for my patients, depending on their needs and wants. CAN YOU GIVE US AN EXAMPLE?

Fillers are better than ever. They are resilient – meaning they move with peoples’ faces – and are so clever that you can almost tissue-match where the ageing has taken place. It’s like giving my patients a filler couture service. I call it the Taktouk Time Traveller. I ask them to bring in old photos of themselves, as well as their washbag, to go through what is right and wrong for them.

people confidence. Giving them the tools to slow down ageing and do it gracefully. The amount of people who come to me and say, ‘I feel really young but my face doesn’t reflect that: I feel my face looks, sad, tired, sleep-deprived…’ – all these negative expressions. What a shame when they feel young at heart. Their faces need to corroborate what’s going on inside. WHEN SHOULD YOU STOP WORKING ON YOUR FACE?

When I tell you to! A doctor needs to be one hundred per cent ethical, practising with their patients’ best interests at heart and knowing when to stop. DO YOU INTERVENE?

Of course. Part of my consultation is working out what patients want and you’d be surprised what information you can elicit. I always say the best doctors are the ones who aren’t afraid to say ‘No’. WHAT’S YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL FOR YOUR PATIENTS?

I want my patients to come and feel like family. It’s a unique relationship, where they can reveal their secrets and insecurities. We make a plan and I work towards this being a lifelong relationship. I don’t want them to hotfoot it from one doctor to the next with different treatments, because that’s when it all goes terribly wrong. That’s why it’s hard to get an appointment with me. My patients do stay with me and my loyalties have to be with who I have first rather than see the world and his wife. Alhough the door is always open to anyone who’d like to see me, should there be room.

WHAT’S YOUR APPROACH TO SKINCARE?

Doctors understand the science within skincare. For example, SPFs protect us against the sun’s damaging and ageing rays, while Vitamin C is needed to produce collagen. It neutralises free radicals and is photoprotective. Vitamin A – or the retinoids – reduce the appearance of fine line and wrinkles. Niacinamide is anti-inflammatory and helps with pigmentation. The skin is your blank canvas and it’s the first thing you wear. If it doesn’t look at its best, it’s a pointless exercise. WHY DO YOU BELIEVE IN WHAT YOU DO?

It’s about being the best version of yourself. Giving

86

AND WHY DO THEY COME TO YOU, RATHER THAN OTHER DOCTORS?

I’ve worked in and know of many clinics where every patient who walks through the door is seen as a cheque. They take the patients’ wants over their needs, just to cash that cheque. I’m known in the industry to be the opposite: I’ll never do what is not right for them. I’m the doctor with the experience, and that is why you should come to me for the truth. If I wouldn’t do it to a member of my family, I wouldn’t do it to you. I’m not intimidating. Couldn’t be if I tried! I’m friendly and my clinic feels like home.

Emma Bevan makes it her business to know London inside and out. Having explored all its special nooks and crannies, she gives us her own guided tour of the capital

Fabergé in London: Romance to Revolution, V&A, until 8 May, vam.ac.uk

I

’m always led by culture and the experience of doing something different – be it a guided tour, an exhibition or discovering something new. Usually, I like to have a focus, with a specific place or something to do in mind. But sometimes it is fun just to wander and see where you end up. Whether you live in London or are just visiting, we are all tourists. So here are my top places to go and things to do…

@littlelondonwhispers

Whether you have thirty minutes or five hours, this affluent pocket of London has something for you to do. My favourite museum is the V&A: they always have an exhibition running. For the next few months, Fabergé will captivate you for hours. A ten-minute walk will take you to Kensington Palace and, if you time it well, you can cross over to Hyde Park and catch the Household Cavalry taking their daily walk for the changing of the guard.

Jump on a Thames Clipper at Embankment Pier and take the river boat to Greenwich, enjoying a tour of London along the way. Disembark at the Cutty Sark, one of the last tea clipper vessels. Next door you have the Old Royal Naval College, the Painted Hall, the Maritime Museum, the Queen’s House and, a short hike up the hill, the Royal Observatory, where you will find the best views of Canary Wharf. Top tip: always check the times for your return journey when you get off the boat. There is little worse than arriving back at the pier, seeing your boat speed off into the sunset and having to wait forty-five minutes for the next one!

At the incredible and splendid monument to history that is Westminster Abbey, I enjoyed one of the best tours I’ve ever been on. There is more British history in this single spot than you can imagine. No sooner had our tour ended than I wanted to do it again! Around the corner, you can admire the shining glory of Big Ben after its major renovation. Then walk halfway across Westminster Bridge to get a good view of the Houses of Parliament from the river. Top tip: book your guided tour of Westminster Abbey well ahead – this is a history lesson not to be missed.

Spitalfields is home to the oldest market in London. Take a stroll in the surrounding East London and you will find the original homes of the Huguenots and step back in time. Dennis Severs’ House is a time capsule: an eighteenth-century townhouse restored to show what life was like for a family of Huguenot silk weavers. Pop by Fournier Street: home to the artists Gilbert & George, who describe themselves as ‘two people, one artist’ and see the area they hail as a microcosm of the world. Top tip: book lunch and make a day of it, adding a visit to Brick Lane for vintage shopping and impressive street art.

NE W YOR K S TATE OF MIND There is something magical about New York; something visceral that captures our imaginations on every visit. Everything feels bigger. Time seems to move a little faster. The abundant energy, sound and scale come together to create an inimitable, inspiring atmosphere. Every few years, we get the urge to dip our toes into this vibrant place, and remind ourselves why it’s one of the world’s greatest cities. The Big Apple is renowned for trendy bars and eateries, creative boutiques and views to die for, each area offering something completely different from the next. As the sun fades, the city lights come alive. The restaurant scene is prolific; make reservations early so you don’t miss out. One of our favourite spots for dinner is Chinese Tuxedo (@chinesetuxedo), a popular haunt in the heart of Chinatown. The brainchild of Jeff Lam and Eddy Buckingham, it has a buzzing atmosphere amid its brick walls, candlelight and sleek, contemporary interiors. For evening cocktails, nothing beats stepping into the roaring 1920s at Maison Premiere (@maisonpremiere), a Brooklyn institution for oysters, absinthe on tap and a guaranteed great evening by candlelight. For Sunday brunch, head over the Williamsburg Bridge and relax at DUMBO House, a stylish members’ space from the Soho House Group. With a marvellous view of Manhattan, it’s the perfect place to take time, read a paper and relax.

M A RV ELL OUS M A R R A K ECH Morocco’s glittering bohemian jewel Marrakech is just a four-hour flight from London, yet feels a world away. The sights, scents and flavours of the red city serve up a dose of ancient wonder combined with sensuous luxury and aesthetic simplicity. It’s the kind of place you visit once and immediately know you’ll be back. From the warm morning glow as the sun rises over the Atlas mountains to the flurry of fast-paced traffic, powder-pink buildings, magicians in Jemaa el-Fna Square, majestic medina walls, terracotta walkways and haggling for rugs and gleaming trinkets in the city’s

souks, Marrakech is an exotic, sensory overload like no other. And it will captivate all who venture behind its ochre walls. Seven miles south of the medina, at the gateway to the Sahara, our favourite place to stay is the prestigious ‘peaceful paradise’, Amanjena (@amanjena_resort). Influenced by Marrakech’s Saadian tombs, its majestic arches, lush palms and olive trees sit in perfect harmony with the dusky pink walls, stunning water reflections and tranquil villas; a spacious and serene escape from the bustle of the souks. 114

THE A LLU R ING A M A LFI COA S T There is something indescribable about the beauty of the Amalfi Coast. It is unlike anywhere else in the world. John Steinbeck said it best: ‘Positano bites deep. It is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone.’ Our first stop is always Hotel Santa Caterina (@hotel_santa_caterina), on a cliff edge in the heart of the Amalfi Coast. It has a sense of old-world glamour and, if the walls could talk, they would tell a thousand stories. In nearby Positano, a visit to Da Vincenzo for grilled langoustine and homemade ragu pasta is a must, while the pizza at Il Capitano is unrivalled. And for true romance, start with sundowners on the terrace at Le Sirenuse, followed by dinner at the Michelin-starred La Sponda.

A M A ZING A M A NZ OE Nestled high on a hilltop, amid olive groves, vineyards and cypress trees, Amanzoe (aman.com/resorts/amanzoe) draws its name from the Sanskrit-derived word for ‘peace’ and zoe, the Greek word for ‘life’. The resort feels like an acropolis: majestic pillars and colonnades crafted in marble and stone are surrounded by pale blue waters, conjuring a serene atmosphere. The columned walkways lead to a circular platform and firepit, which offers a panoramic view of the Peloponnese and Aegean Sea, and is a prime spot for watching the sunset. Tranquility and relaxation are at the core of the Aman philosophy – and, at Amanzoe, time stands almost still. The focus is health, wellbeing and relaxing seclusion: essential for those leading busy city lives. This exclusive haven of unsurpassed beauty has quickly become the Mediterranean playground of those in the know. Sleek, contemporary pavilions and villas are available to purchase or rent. All open to expansive private terraces, enabling airy interiors to blend seamlessly with nature, and create an unrivalled sense of calm and seclusion.

The Marylebone home of Jane Austen’s brother has been lovingly recreated and is now a sumptuous place to stay

T is is a thing of beauty when old and somewhat forgotten buildings are restored to their former splendour; even more so when they are recreated and shared. Such is the case with the newly renovated Henry’s Townhouse (@ henrystownhouse). In the heart of Marylebone, this Grade II-listed former home of Jane Austen’s brother Henry – where Jane herself was a regular – has been brought back to life as an exclusive place to visit, stay and, most of all, enjoy. Even more magical is the way in which it has been reimagined, echoing a rich and intriguing history full of the intense characters and fascinating lives of a London that once was. At number 24 Upper Berkeley Street, the house was the subject of a collaboration between owners Jane and Steven Collins and the award-wining interior designer Russell Sage Studio. They have recreated the Regency period, taking inspiration from Austen’s reported life at the house and as part of wider London society. While far from museumlike, the spaces are so elegantly designed and curated that one feels truly transported into the Austen era; an era beautifully portrayed in the Netflix sensation Bridgerton. From the pretty colour palettes to the carefully selected fabrics and detailing, with original period pieces, there is an overriding feel of sumptuous luxury. This is best seen in the seven elegant and elaborate bedrooms, each with their own story to tell. Much like Austen’s novels, they pull you in until you are so immersed that you cannot see any further – and nor would you want to. This intoxicating spirit is evident elsewhere in the house too. The Georgian Pantry Kitchen is ideal for private dining, while Jane’s Reading Room and the Carriage Snug are ideal for evening drinks or peaceful moments. To complement the captivating visual history, the Townhouse has created a sensory experience with its first collection of candles. The six fragrance blends paint a picture of Regency London society and life in the Austen household. There are notes of black tea from the east (newly popular in London at the time), the fresh blooms that typically scented Marylebone households, the cinnamon and cloves of a busy basement kitchen and the glass of port that would accompany cigars. Each smart white ceramic candle holder bears a silhouette portrait (known at the time as a ‘shade’) that reflects the name of the scent. All are now available at Liberty and are a beautiful way to prepare for the real deal: a visit to Henry’s.
