EDITOR'S LETTER With over 200 pages of luxury lifestyle, fashion, beauty and travel content, I couldn't be more excited to join MINE as Editor, for its fourth incredible issue. For me, luxury is precious time with (and without) my children, which were sentiments I found I shared with the exceptionally talented jeweller Jessica McCormack, who I was privileged to interview on page 40. As Jessica points out, what ever time you have, spend it in a space that you enjoy and appreciate – for her, it's her stunning Mayfair townhouse store, which she so thoughtfully curated. It is for this reason we dedicated this issue to interiors, offering so many ways to inspire your own, idyllic space. From beautiful leather board games ( , page 10) to our round-up of the best global hotels with jaw-dropping interiors ( , page 118). While on page 176, Jessica Diner gives us the latest ways to scent our daily space, and Alice du Parcq reveals how to make the most sacrosanct of spaces (our beds!), even more desirable (page 162).

ow, we're on Issue 4 – who would have thought we would have made it this far? Like everything we do, we have put our heart and soul into getting to this point. And for Issue 4, as with every issue of MINE, we wanted to give it a

spin, something that makes everything work together. We both love interiors, homes, and simply transforming a space from drab to fab. It's what we do for a living, after all – taking a blank space and turning it into someone's dream, or working in line with a brand's brief. With your home, things can be slightly different, though – committing to a particular look when we all change our minds constantly (well, at least we do!), is tough. Hopefully, with this issue – and the insight shared by some of world's most fabulous interior designers, as well as our favourite stunning interiors – those choices will be easier. The incredible Emilio Pimentel-Reid introduces us to his London hotspots (page 108), while Javier Fusté travels the world to bring us his most-loved haunts on pages 146. And on page 118, Scarlett Russell meets five international interior designers to discuss their latest five-star hotel projects. Check in while you still can. defy anyone not to fall in love with Jessica McCormack's London boutique. A red brick, Grade II-listed townhouse, just off Mayfair’s Mount Street, the fivestorey building is like no other jewellery house you'll ever visit. It's as immaculate as a museum, as fashionable as an art gallery, yet as warm and personable as someone’s (perfect) home. The jewellery contrasts effortlessly with sculptures, pieces of art and an array of flowers. I stand on the second floor, where a glossy navy piano, featuring jewel-like flecks inspired by McCormack's Tattoo earrings (which in turn are inspired by traditional Maori tattoos), plays a mix of classical and modern music. I watch the keys tap away in fascination. Above a Jacobean marble fireplace there are framed photos – of Jessica as a child, with her father, and of Jessica's business partner, Rachel Slack's mother as a child, with her father Harry Oppenheimer, presenting a diamond to Her Royal Highness The Queen. Such personal touches anchor the interior with soul, love and, above all, warmth. Given the fact that this is a store selling serious diamonds, there is nothing stuffy or awkward about it. And then there is Jessica herself. Young, stylish and beautiful, soft, sincere and giggly, as we drift naturally in and out of conversation about her two young children and her other ‘first’ child – the über-successful jewellery brand that is Jessica McCormack. “I’ve always had an understanding of fine art and jewellery. My father was an antique dealer, so I grew up with wonderful things around me. When I came to London in my early '20s, to work at Sotheby’s, it was then that I really thought I wanted to combine my own love of jewellery with my appreciation of art, through design.” Her close friendship with Rachel Slack, an heiress of the Oppenheimer family, famous for their association with De Beers, and art collector Michael Rosenfeld, eventuated in coming together as business partners to launch the jewellery brand. After several years flourishing at their Clerkenwell ‘by appointment’ salon, they needed more space. “I’d been looking for two years and always loved the idea of an old Parisienne jewellery house, as I wanted to re-create that old school romantic glamour with a modern twist. it was love at first sight, and we moved heaven and earth to make it happen. I had so many interior designers pitch, who just wanted to put a style ‘on me’. I kept thinking ‘but I’m not just neo-classical in style, and I don’t just love the colour blue’. So I decided to do it myself with my partners. Ten months later, it was done! When my mother came over from New Zealand for the first time to see it, she merely exclaimed, “Well, of course, it was always going to look like this!” Indeed, the house is so well curated, including pieces by David Wiseman, Rick Owens, The Haas Brothers, Marilyn Minter and Frank Bowling (which Jessica herself commissioned), that her clients have also

commissioned work of their own with the same artists. “I’m in awe of these pieces, and I adore passing on not just my passion and knowledge but also my contacts.” She references so many different pieces in such great detail that I ask if she knows where every single thing is from and the history behind it? “Yes, pretty much.” She smiles confidently. “Time is luxury, so I want to offer my clients a space where they can enjoy jewellery – reflect on it and appreciate it in its entirety. It’s not a 5-minute trend. It’s something with emotional attachment. When they are here, I let them wander around to find a place where they feel comfortable. It has to be an organic process and I encourage clients to

have as much input as possible.” And those clients happen to include a fair few celebrities. Julianne Moore, Charlize Theron, Sienna Miller, Liv Tyler, Madonna, and Rihanna have all worn McCormack's designs. The mind boggles just trying to take it all in. As in a gallery, one could spend hours just admiring each and every detail of the boutique. The eclectic yet impeccable flow of the house reflects her ability to blend old with new, in a way that would make any designer’s eyes water with delight. Interior designer Christopher Leach, who Jessica ‘bounced ideas off ’, said “she is fearless at throwing objects together and being so visual herself.” McCormack herself is not a formally trained jewellery designer, which may explain why she doesn’t have “specific notions of how things should be done”. There is no seasonal jewellery collection. There are no nods to trends. Instead, what is crystal clear is that she designs from the heart: “I like difficult clients and love the challenge of designing a piece that they will fall in love with and become sentimental about – not just, ‘I want a big rock’. I’d never force something for a commercial aspect.” She wholeheartedly encourages clients to bring in existing jewellery pieces so she can show them ways to re-work them and create their very own collection. “I get excited about old jewellery and giving them a modern twist with new life where they can become sentimental and passed on.” When I mention my own most cherished piece of personal jewellery, she immediately comes up with several brilliant ideas, of how to move forward with it, all cleverly relating to my children. Not only do my heart strings start pulling but everything she says is spot on. This isn’t just a career for McCormack. She was born to do this. And what next for the woman who has it all? She jokes that like any child, the business is bound to do something naughty if she turns her back, so she's keeping a close eye on it. “Ultimately, I’m always thinking about what can I do next because there is so much more to do!” McCormack exclusively reveals to MINE that an official bridal collection is next. A big revelation for someone who doesn’t 'do' collections but equally unsurprising that she has chosen a market centred around love and emotion. So, you heard it here first, brides-to-be. Get ready to fall madly in love all over again…

ou seem to be in everything right now! Is this a masterplan or sheer good luck? If I knew that, I’d have the answer to everything! With me, it’s been a case of being in the right place at the right time. I never wanted to be an actor from a young age, instead I kind of discovered it. And then I was lucky enough to meet people who pointed me in the right direction and gave me some really good advice. How did it all start? I did GCSE Drama at school and my teacher sent me for a BBC Radio 4 play in Manchester – which I got! My mum and dad were like, ‘What are we getting ourselves in to?!’ But the other actors on the radio play said, 'You could do this as a career’ and one of them introduced me to her agent. I was 14. You have played some emotionally gruelling roles – Remember Me and Thirteen, in particular, both for the BBC. What is it that attracts you to this sort of part? It’s the challenge of going to a set every day and being pushed to the

What are your work plans for the rest of 2016? I’m playing Elizabeth of York in – the TV sequel to Philippa Gregory’s War of the Roses drama, . And I’ve got my first film, but I’m not allowed to say anything about it yet! I can say she’s a very fun character – so it’s a big contrast to what I’ve been doing. After spending Thirteen in a baggy cardigan, was coming to the MINE shoot and playing dress-up in couture a form of light relief? I’d never had the chance to wear dresses like this before! I come from Liverpool, where all the girls get their hair blown out every weekend, so it’s lovely to wear gorgeous dresses and get dressed up. As soon as you get into a costume, you change – you know how to hold yourself. You know exactly how that person feels. Can you imagine wearing these dresses every day? You’d just be floating around everywhere! When you’re not floating around in ball gowns, looking like a '50s debutante, what’s your favourite thing to do? Outside work? [Laughs] I was thinking, ‘What makes me happiest?’ and it’s work. I know, very sad! When I’m not working, I like to catch up with friends and family. I love going to gigs. I’m going to see Bruce Springsteen this year – I love Bruce!

So the challenge of putting myself in her position and imagining what she must have been feeling at that time was huge. But it must take its toll… When you’re filming, it’s not as bad. You’re in role and you’re in this bubble. You’ve got four months and you can just keep going. I don’t think it was until the last week of filming, when I knew I was going home, that the tiredness kicked in. It’s the emotional tiredness. But I could never complain. It was an amazing job and I don’t think people have ever seen me do that before. It was good to take people by surprise. And next you're playing murder victim Beryl Evans in 10 Rillington Place. Another grim story! Did you enjoy working with heavyweights like Samantha Morton and Tim Roth? Samantha is one of my favourite actresses. I really look up to her and have been blown away by her film work. So even to be in a drama with her is insane! To be around people like her and Tim; watching them; seeing how they work; asking them questions – it’s a massive learning curve.

While other fashion weeks were bursting with colour, New York maintained a neutral approach. Browns and nudes were seen at Ralph Lauren, Carolina Herrera and Escada. However, some designers like Marchesa and Escada added a pop of colour with red becoming a go-to hue, especially for the evening. Proenza Schouler and Calvin Klein made a statement by adding a glossy effect to leather clothing and accessories. Meanwhile, Zac Posen and Rodarte perfectly mastered imperfection with asymmetric designs. The fashion in New York was mostly understated but drama lovers can resort to the big trend of oversized round shoulders, as seen at Delpozo and Sophie Theallet.

Designers from Roksanda to Julien MacDonald reached new heights this season with high necklines and even higher boots (think thigh). Popular in 2015, the cape didn’t lose its appeal this year. Peter Pilotto made it easy and comforting to wear during the day, while Sarah Burton at McQueen worked her magic, creating regal embellished pieces for the evening. Transparency was a very consistent trend on the catwalks, thanks to ultra-feminine, ultra-romantic lace and tulle (as seen at McQueen). If you can’t survive winter with barely-there transparent clothes, add a playful touch of warmth with this season’s must-have statement coats, as seen in McQueen and Anya Hindmarch.

Fendi made fashion ‘waves’ in Milan by adding ruffles – and where Karl leads, we follow. Milan also gave us a fashion week full of sparkle and festive glamour, thanks to an invasion of sequins. Cue Dolce & Gabbana, who triumphed with the trend, while colourful prints were masterfully combined at Marni and Prada. Stripes were also given a colourful makeover this season, especially on fur (mix striped separates together for a maximum impact). The calendar might have said autumn when the collections came out but thanks to Gucci and Armani, who filled the fashion field with colourful blooms, spring was definitely in the air.

CHANEL There was a feminine breeze blowing throughout Paris Fashion Week, thanks to Elie Saab and Valentino's airy creations, while the ruffle trend seen in Milan kept going strong, appearing everywhere from dresses at Chanel to trousers at Balmain. The cold shoulder trend also marched on, as dresses and jackets slipped away to reveal the skin at Yves Saint Laurent and Balenciaga. Balmain had a velvet revival, and gave the fabric a baroque makeover. MAISON MAGNIFIQUE!

W

hen I pick up the phone to chat to Francis Kurkdjian on a dreary grey London morning, I struggle to get hold of him. A few minutes later, I get an excited yet apologetic call back: “I’m sooo sorry – I’ve just left Elie Saab, my meeting ran over!” he gushes in his pitch-perfect Parisian purr. And so we talk, as he walks through the streets of Paris, and I feel as though I’m there by his side. “It’s such a beautiful day, you know, the sun is beaming down on my face, as I stand in Place de la Concorde… I feel so happy and blessed in moments like these.” And that sums up Francis. Running out of the Elie Saab HQ one moment, and touched by life's simple pleasures the next. In the fragrance world, Francis is big. Very big. At 26, he signed his first perfume, Le Male by Jean Paul Gaultier – one of the world's best-selling fragrances, which gave him instant fame and established his place within the universe of perfumes. Following this, he created another 40 best-selling scents for major companies worldwide, including Le Perfume for Elie Saab, Burberry's My Burberry, and Narciso Rodriguez For Her. And that’s not to mention his highly acclaimed industry accolades, as well as being named Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture in 2008. So, you’ll forgive me if I (and the rest of the international beauty press) are more than impressed. In 2009 the writing was on the wall and Francis

opened his luxury fragrance house, Maison Francis Kurkdjian. When asked what it’s like to be a perfumer of such stance, he shrugs it off, “I never look back. For me the excitement is ahead. One of the things I’m most afraid of is death because there is still so much I want to enjoy, experience and achieve.” Forever three steps ahead, he talks about the excitements of 3D-print fragrances and the future experimentation of science and fragrance. His excitement is nothing short of contagious. Heralded as an artist, he’s gone where few perfumers dare to, as demonstrated by his many artistic collaborations and installations. In 2005 he famously re-created MarieAntoinette’s perfume for the Chateau of Versailles, and in 2007 and 2008 scented the palace garden fountains with roseorange blossom bubbles for a water show. At the 2015’s Milan World Expo, visitors walked through a scented ‘mist’ that captured the cloister of the Palazzo delle Stelline, inspired by Leonardo da Vinci. Most recently, at an exhibition of Vigée le Brun (Marie-Antoinette’s favourite portraitists, known for her love of flowers), Francis designed a 49ft mirror at the entrance of the Grand Palais dispensing a rose-scented fragrance. Magical. Again, when asked about his artistic contribution to the perfume world, he doesn't dwell on it. “The art of perfume is the art of seduction and pleasure – to please yourself and others. The philosophy of my brand, and what I'm trying to express, is about touching others in a unique way – and if I can do this, then I’m truly happy. It’s great to be appreciated by the press and designers but when I get messages from anonymous women telling me they love one of my scents, this makes my day, that my energy has been put into something concrete.”

His humility is as real as his success: ‘Francis the humanitarian’ plays a big part behind the brand – a fascinating concept in itself, when you think about the product in question is one of luxury. But his angle has never been about the excess of luxury, yet more about the beauty of it and part of that beauty is about putting back in what you get out – ‘a virtuous circle’, as he calls it. Instead of discussing his inspirations and moments of pride with a lofty air, he talks of the opportunity of giving back to both society and his craft (he teaches at ISIPCA (International Perfumery School in Paris) and has a long list of charitable contributions), as what drives him. When the artist Hatch Arbach asked him to recreate the scent of blood for his installation ‘Mawtini’ for the 2014 Nuit Blanche in Paris as a call for peace, he describes it as incredibly ‘moving’ to be given the chance to use his skills to promote peace and happiness. Here we have a multi-million selling perfumer who understands the concept of creating best-selling fragrances as much as he does his ability to create something with

no commercial value – but this, for him, is what is truly priceless. So what creative brilliance can we look forward to? Already this year he has wowed us with his latest Maison Francis Kurkdjian launch Baccarat Rouge 540 (his collaboration with the French luxury crystal brand), which in his own words ‘lays on the skin like an amber floral and woody breeze’. Then, this month, there is the release of the new Elie Saab fragrance Elie Saab Couture. Not a bad start to 2016! “The thing is, I’m never happy. It comes from my very young days, training to be a ballet dancer. Ballet channelled my very creative side as much as it disciplined me – if you did two turns in dance, why not three? If you lifted your leg high, you could always lift it higher. As I tell my students, it’s essential to be competitive but you should first and foremost compete with yourself if you want to push yourself to greater heights. At the end of the day, I believe strongly in the power of self – and as I also tell them, life is like a boat. You have a choice of driving the boat or being a passenger. Why be a passenger?”

The extraordinary house of Sir John Soane – one of the greatest English architects – is today a museum. The interiors kept as they were at the time of his death, 180 years ago, displays Soane’s stunning collection of antiquities, furniture, architectural models and paintings, including works by Hogarth, Turner and Canaletto. It’s a vast collection full of curiosities and surprises. Since 1986, de Gournay has revived ancient traditions and techniques from the 17th century, employing a team of highly skilled artists to paint traditional Chinoiserie, Japanese and Korean and 19th-century French-inspired Papiers Peints Panoramiques wallpapers. Situated in Knightsbridge, not far from the company’s flagship showroom, Claud Cecil Gurney’s London home (which is sometimes open for events) acts a spectacular showcase for the hand-painted designs and the exquisite detail inherent to each and every panel. “I want guests to feel like they’re in someone’s gorgeous house”

Anna Spiro, head designer of Brisbane-based interior design company Spiro & Black, is known for her rustic, homely interiors. HALCYON HOUSE, just off Cabarita Beach on the east coast of Australia, is no different

How did you approach this design? I’m all about clashing prints and beautiful fabrics. I grew up in a very homely household by the beach with lot of blues and white, different fabrics and lived-in chic. When the owners of Halcyon House approached me, they were heading down the route of a minimalistic beach hotel, which was beautiful but quite modern. I love traditional and naive decorating; nothing too contrived or structured but interesting and layered and collective. I changed the whole thing, I think the architect hates me! Which features particularly reflect this? Upholstered walls add so much more comfort to the space than plain white walls. I found beautiful old bottle and drink dispensers and converted them into lamps, then custom-made the lampshades. It’s all very bespoke and quirky. None of my work is ever out of a catalogue. I’m constantly on the lookout for original things, sourcing antique shops and dump-yard sales. What about the restaurant, Paper Daisy? I wanted this to feel like you’re in someone’s gorgeous kitchen, rather than a stark, sterile hotel. Chunky wooden tables with blue and white upholstered chairs, antiques, framed photographs and pictures, comfortable sofas. I found a lot of local artists’ work and framed them all over the walls. I prefer lots of small pictures as opposed to big, imposing ones. Who is the typical Halcyon guest? A lot of visitors come from Melbourne and we have a lot of weddings and big 50th birthday parties. “We looked carefully at the landscape and environment”

What was your initial brief? To work closely with the building’s local architect and embrace the Cape-style architecture, to make guests truly feel like they were in South Africa. We looked carefully at the landscape and environment of where the property is. The projects we like to work David Collins Studio has on are with people who want to respect their location. so incorporated warm oranges. Everything was left quite raw and exposed. We created a different feel for day and night. Guests want a light, airy, outward-facing, uplifting feeling at breakfast and lunch. Dinner would become much more inward facing, more about the interiors you’re in and moody lighting. What was important to you when designing the bedrooms? I think the traditional hotel room is evolving. The majority of the guests are here for pleasure but people are travelling wirelessly. They don’t necessarily need a desk or dining table, but do like a sofa, coffee table and extra plug sockets by their bed so they can work or watch something on their laptop in bed – and a dimmer switch, so they can adjust the lighting themselves. I hate overly complicated technology and everything being pre-set. Guests should feel like they are at home – but a very wonderful home! What else was important to you? Lots of vanity space. We made sure there is a shelf or counter in every bathroom for toiletry bags, somewhere to hide the suitcase and extra lighting by a dressing table is very important. davidcollins.com/projects/hotels

Owner/ designer Reita used locally sourced materials, furniture and toiletries at Owl And The Pussycat to create a truly authentic Sri Lankan experience

Sri Lanka’s newest boutique hotel, OWL AND THE PUSSYCAT, opened in January. Tucked away in the southern coastal town of Thalpe, its owner Reita Gadkari presided over every interior detail

“I didn’t want a polished look” Describe the overall feel of Owl And The Pussycat… I wanted it to be casual and rustic and not at all shiny and smooth. I didn’t want things hidden away, I like everything exposed. I want people to feel comfortable and at ease. Guests don’t come here for work; they come to relax. How did you achieve that? Our guests aren’t wearing high heels; they’re coming straight from the beach and want somewhere to chuck their bag and flip-flops without getting their room sandy, so I have wicker baskets by the door just for this. The rooms also feature a bamboo hanging frame where they can hang their bikini and sarong to dry. There are locally made jewellery boxes for your knick-knacks. All the sofas are from natural unpolished cane. I grew up in India and all the furniture was made this way, and lasted for years. Every cushion is made of cotton to work with the hot, tropical climate. There are four washing baskets so guests can separate their colours, whites, delicates and dry-cleaning. I’m very fussy. How did you decide the colour scheme? Because there are so many clashing prints and colours in the rooms, I wanted the walls to be

fairly neutral, so there is a lot of white, then stone in the bathrooms. But on the terraces facing the seaside I used pretty blues, pinks and yellows – the kind of colours you’d see outside. Why was it so important that you use locally sourced materials? Every room features paintings from local artists. I met a Yugoslavian lady who has lived in Sri Lanka for 20 years and makes the most beautiful natural products, such as mosquito repellent and lemongrass shower gels, so all the bathrooms have those. But I also sourced light Italian towels that dry quickly and are different colours, so no one has to share. The reception is one part of a hotel that’s often overlooked, design-wise. Why did you focus on it? I hate arriving at a hotel after a long journey and standing at a counter. It feels so impersonal and formal. So I placed a large table – handmade from wood, glass and red leather – in the hotel's reception, where guests can sit, have coffee or coconut water, eat fruit and read magazines while they’re checked in. otphotel.com

“It’s '70s retro with a clean, modern twist” The 5-star Atlantis Who is the Atlantis By Giardino client? The hotel is a popular tourist spot, as we’re so close to the mountains and beautiful scenery, but largely the guests are business people. We ensured the desks in the bedrooms were large and beautifully made, with power points nearby and fantastic views. It’s important to me that views from the bedrooms are memorable. How did you approach the design? This building is from the late '60s, early '70s and I wanted to retain that era’s style but with a modern twist. I took influence from the '50s, too. We kept the timber-covered balconies and retro-style furniture and colour palettes, such as the quilted sofas and cocktail chairs in the bar, and the lampshades and headboards in the bedrooms. Those eras were very cool, so it was a lot of fun to design. How did you keep the design contemporary? The building itself is very angular, very clean and contemporary. The location is within both a city and the mountains, so I tried to capture that juxtaposition with natural and man-made materials, such as wood and upholstered panelling, and a steel staircase.

Hotel in Zurich was built in the late '60s and favoured by Frank Zappa, Shirley MacLaine and Muhammad Ali, to name a few. It underwent a huge renovation under the helm of Inge Moore, President of Hirsch Bedner Associates (HBA) International’s European division, and re-opened last December as ATLANTIS BY GIARDINO

What challenges did you face? We had a tight turnaround and completed the project in 18 months. And Zurich has very specific building regulations and laws. A project such as this takes time because every single item is hand-selected and specified. The fact that it was an old building meant some of the drawings from the site survey weren’t always accurate with the conditions we found. Sourcing materials from around the world – marble floors from Italy, and tiles from Greece – took some time but we achieved it. Which is your favourite room? The spa is unique because of materials, such as stone tiles cut in an angular way rather than square, to reflect the angularity of the exterior. I’m also fond of the art collection throughout the hotel. We wanted it to feel curated and special and, because the palette was neutral, we could experiment with pops of colour. We have '60s and '70s –style paintings, and commissioned many local Zurich artists. On the cusp of Hyde Park, THE LANESBOROUGH, originally built as a mansion in 1719, became a hotel in

1991. It re-opened in July 2015 after an extensive renovation. Acclaimed French designer Alberto Pinto, who has developed everything from offices, villas and yachts, died during the renovation and his sister, Linda Pinto, took over at the design helm

What did you initially discuss with Alberto? Our first thoughts were how dark the rooms were. The floors of the bedrooms were mahogany, so we decided very early on to make everything lighter and brighter. It was obvious to us that there had to be an English theme throughout the hotel, so floral patterns and use of light and pastel colours helped this. We also hung antique canvas oil paintings in the dining rooms. What challenges did you face? The challenge was finding ways of modernising a very old design. We couldn’t change the sizes of the rooms or where the windows were, and some rooms are very small, so we had to ensure the bedrooms were lighter from the inside. We avoided dark fabrics. Everything had to be light to make the rooms look bigger. What other details were important to you? Ensuring there was a bedside table big enough for your phone, book, iPad, glass of water and whatever else. It's frustrating when you have a tiny table and have to put your book on the floor. It’s the same for the bathroom; guests like lots of room for their toiletries. Rooms needed to be more comfortable and practical. I approached the bedrooms thinking of what I would like in my own bedroom. Curtains that close all the way are important, too. How did you decide on the colour scheme? Black and white can look beautiful, but that’s not enough for a hotel. The colour scheme kind of came with the fabrics. We loved these blues, greens and yellows, which were all very English colours. Pink is difficult because it’s quite feminine, but to counteract the pastels and florals in the room we would add a bold, dark red velvety armchair. lanesborough.com

D

avid Collins Studio is the creative powerhouse behind some of the most beautiful and iconic interiors of the past 30 years. From the elegant Art Deco-style Claridge’s Bar to The Wolseley, with its Viennese flourishes, its design projects are masterclasses in “carefully curated luxury”. Little wonder, then, that David Collins Studio is the luxury brands’ go-to designer when it comes to creating showstopping retail spaces. A graduate of the Royal College of Art, Lewis Taylor – who heads up the retail arm of David Collins Studio – has spearheaded some of the company’s most prestigious projects, and relishes the challenges posed by designing for brands with their own strong visual identity. “We can’t just go in there and reinvent a brand,” Lewis explains. “It’s more a question of reinterpreting it or moving it on in some way. Or ‘evolution not revolution’, as we often say.” When it came to designing Alexander McQueen’s flagship store in Paris, the process of “evolution” involved going back to the brand’s core values. Not only was the interior itself gutted – columns, walls and even staircases were moved – but the David Collins Studio team, working closely with McQueen’s Creative Director, Sarah Burton, “had to go back to the very beginning in order to understand the history and story of the brand.”

The resulting space visually reflects the fashion label’s key concepts. “The idea with McQueen clothes is that they look like one thing from afar, but as you get closer they start to ‘reveal’ themselves,” explains Lewis. “We employed that same concept by using a decorative plaster panel that, as you approach it, reveals elements from the McQueen archive, such as gargoyles, skulls and sea anemones.” A Jacques Duval-Brasseur light-up metal table, dating from the 1920s, is a focal point, while classical French furniture and a “reinvented” parquet floor – laid in a shattered rather than traditional grid pattern – pay homage to the store’s Parisian location. “With all our projects there has to be some geographical tie,” says Lewis. “It can be as subtle as using a locally sourced material for the wall coverings, but it gives our projects a bit more richness.”


At the Jimmy Choo Townhouse in New Bond Street, London – an elegant concoction of pink onyx, satin gold and mink velvet – the theme is “timeless glamour”. The store is more boutique hotel than retail space; there’s even a Champagne bar on the first floor. The look, developed with the brand’s Creative Director, Sandra Choi, is a concept that will be rolled out globally. Lewis explains: “We wanted to introduce signature elements that the brand could ‘own’, and which would become iconic Jimmy Choo features.” One example is the woven metal mesh that has been used as a backdrop for some of the products. “It has a really interesting texture and grain. It bounces light around, and adds movement to the space.” Glass globes from Bauhaus design specialist Tecnolumen hang over some shelves. “They’re classic in design, whereas we’ve used very modern lighting over the staircase,” says Lewis. “That mix of contemporary and heritage is what we do a lot in our projects.” Subtle hints at a company’s past, the understated use of a brand’s key colours, little nods to a store’s locale... this is clever design, both subtle and elegant. And the details matter. Everything from the coving to the door handles have been carefully considered. “We’re fussy,” admits Lewis. “If we can’t find what we want, we’ll design it and make it ourselves.” That bespoke approach is most evident at De Grisogono in New Bond Street. Designed in collaboration with the brand’s founder Fawaz Gruosi, the interior subtly reflects the aesthetics of De Grisogono’s jewellery. As Lewis explains, “We’ve played with some

of the jewellery’s recurring themes – abstract forms, curves, asymmetry, the use of purples and greens. Hence the oval rooms and the pistachio wallpapers in the back room, and the amethyst carpets.” The watch room, lined with polished walnut, was inspired by the timber faces of some of De Grisogono’s watches. Even the flooring references the brand, with marble teardrops, laid in a radial pattern, echoing the classic briolette gemstone cut. Attention to detail is clearly a David Collins Studio hallmark, even if it means going to extremes: when they created the Madison Avenue flagship store for luxury men’s footwear and lifestyle brand Louis Leeman, the team had a 300-year-old French parquet flooring shipped over to New York. “The idea was to recreate a Parisianstyle salon, so we brought in moulded doors and an antique marble fireplace,” says Lewis. It’s a concept that will be rolled out as Louis Leeman expands, with future stores taking other rooms – the dining room or the library, perhaps – as their themes. The front doors, however, will anchor each store to its location; the grid-like gilt door of the Madison Avenue store is pure NYC Art Deco. “For the Paris store, we might go Nouveau, and for London, more Georgian proportions,” muses Lewis. Never forget, though, that customer experience lies at the heart of every David Collins Studio design. Whether you’re stepping off the busy New York sidewalk into a fin de siècle Parisian maison or sipping champagne as you browse shoes and bags, you’ll be whisked away from reality and cocooned in a world of elegance and luxury. And we can all buy in to that.

ew interior designers have the profile and success of Kelly Hoppen MBE. With 40 years’ designing experience, the South African-born, London-based designer is the recipient of multiple industry awards. With her multimillion pound empire, Kelly Hoppen Interiors, she has worked on the homes of Victoria and David Beckham, and Frank Lampard, to name a few. In 2014 she launched her Kelly Hoppen London collection of handcrafted furniture, unique home jewellery and bed linen, and has to date written eight books. ISLAND SETTING

The East-meets-West look is my signature design, so where better to build my dream home than on the island of Con Dao in Vietnam? Con Dao is one of my favourite destinations. I love the views, atmosphere, culture and, of course, the weather. I’ve just returned from a trip there, where I was developing my new interior brand, inspired by the local art and colours of the island. Nestled on a white sand beach and overlooking pristine blue sea, the house would be two stories high and built from natural wood.

The open plan kitchen would feature white marble work tops, while the dining room would have an extra-long dining table that would stretch the length of the room

of the room. The floor would be made from ceramic white tiles to keep the room cool. The rooms would be air-conditioned but natural fans hang above the bed. White parachute curtains keep the glare of the sun out as it rises. I’d work with Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid, who would build eight bathrooms suspended over the beach. They’d have deep luxurious stone baths from Apaiser, overlooking the sea.

BOUDOIR TO BATHROOM

My home would have eight bedrooms and all would be on the second floor, featuring floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the infinity pool. The pool would fall down onto the beach and lead to the sea. Every bedroom would have a walk-in wardrobe with wicker baskets for clothes and a four-poster bed with mosquito nets knotted above, ready to be dropped at dusk. Bedside tables are sturdy organic wooden blocks, designed by the furniture brand Gervasoni. SOMEWHERE SOCIAL

The kitchen and living area would be open plan and welcoming for guests. The kitchen has white marble tops adorned with huge dishes of pomelo and freshly 171


squeezed mango juice, to be sipped from lemon grass straws. My colour-scheme for the whole house is white, taupe, cream, grey with splashes of coriander green and peach coral. Lighting would be from my new collection. The dining room would feature an extralong dining table made from marble that would stretch the length of the room, and be the ultimate socialising area. It would be dressed in ceramic and crockery from local Vietnamese markets and low-hung lighting by Niamh Barry, who makes stunning one-off pieces.

KEEPING FIT

OUTDOOR HAVEN

Ed Godrich, Creative Director of Godrich Interiors in London and my dear friend, would help me source art. We’d fly to Miami Art Basel and then Brooklyn to pick up a painting by Julian Schnabel. Anish Kappor is one of my favourite artists – one of his pieces would look great in the atrium of the house, so guests can see it as soon as they come in. I’d place sculptures by Jeff Koons here, too. I’d also like a Damien Hirst Butterfly on the wall and, finally, a neon panel by Tracey Emin.

A fully air-conditioned gym would sit on the first floor, with a treadmill and bikes over-looking the beach (in case it’s too hot to run on the beach). There would be a weights area and stretch-mats. My favourite DJ, Ben Bridgewater, who’s played at The Box, The Scotch and Arts Club, will devise playlists, which would fill all the rooms via a Sonos music system.

The living room would lead out to a large terrace dotted with amazing outdoor furniture by Restoration Hardware in the States: huge tables, covered by awnings, so one can sit out with a glass of champagne, basking in the sea breeze. Seat covers are white beige taupe towelling. I’d design the infinity pool myself. It would be the length of the house, so it'd look like part of the sea. Luciano Giubbilei would design a luscious green garden.

BEST FOR: A TOTAL TRANSFORMATION

A

savvy solution for anyone who’s been told they have to choose between their figure or their face, the Anti Gravity Face and Body Boost (from £3,000) offers a double-ended solution for a pert bottom a perky face. First an Ultherapy hand-held device is run over the buttocks and upper thighs, firing ultrasonic waves deep into the dermis. This is to remodel, tighten and stimulate new collagen (the stuff that gives skin its spring). It lifts and firms up droopy cheeks into a more peachy-looking shape. Working to reshape puffy ankles (£350) or lift saggy knees (£450), the treatments use new generation Polydioxanone threads (a material used in reabsorbable surgical stitches). Far more robust and durable than the threads used to lift faces, they are carefully placed with a blunt cannula to create an inner mesh under skin. ou would have to have been living in the Artic not to have heard of Coolsculpting, the transformative fat-freezing treatment that uses a process called cryoliposis to crystalise stubborn fat cells so they can be flushed out through the body. Recent tweaks mean the previously long (two-hour plus) treatment has now reduced to a zippy 35 minutes, and a newly re-designed suction ‘cup’ that grips fat, has cool plates on both the bottom and sides for deeper, more effective penetration. This 'makeover' trend originated in California in the late '90s within the luxury property market, and recent research by the US National Association of Realtors calculated that it can reduce a property’s time on the market by up to 50%, as well as fetch a sale price 20% higher than that of a messy property! No surprise then that home styling is becoming more popular in London, too. "Four years ago, just 5% of our clients used Rokstone's Home Styling service," says Becky. "Last year, this had risen to 20%. And this year, it's over 30% of clients." So what exactly turns a property into a super-hot property? Becky reveals all to

It is very important that there is an agreed playlist for both video and music for the home entertainment system of a property. The music and chosen film should have broad appeal, with the volume set low, so as not to be overbearing for visitors.

Homes should have a bright and airy ambience but not be so bright they appear like a hospital operating theatre! Changes can include the introduction of side table lamps, the use of stronger or lower wattage bulbs, or filters on lights. Lamp shades can be updated or curtains or blinds removed to make a room or living space brighter and more welcoming.

The owners of a home will spend most of their time in the main living room, kitchen/dining and main bedroom, so these spaces must be beautifully presented. ever mind the weather, London is the world’s best city. Groucho Marx once said, “I am leaving because the weather is too good. I hate London when it is not raining.” There are plenty of people who would disagree. Come rain or shine, London is a huge draw for people from around the world. It tops lists of world cities for everything from global influence (Forbes) to tourist destination (TripAdvisor) to financial centre (Z/Yen). So what is the key to its appeal? That’s easy, there isn’t just one. Like the people that walk its streets, London is a mish-mash of diversity, with any number of factors combining as the reason for its success.

As a partner in a law firm living and working in the City, I am well aware of its status as a global financial centre. But the City – and its ancient traditions and institutions – is only one piece of the jigsaw. On its fringe is London’s Tech City, the world’s third largest technology start-up cluster and the biggest outside the US. In the last decade, London has attracted more international tech investment projects than Paris, Dublin, Madrid, Amsterdam and Munich combined. But to focus simply on London’s appeal as a business centre would be wrong. This is a vibrant cosmopolitan city with a breathtaking choice of things to see and do. Iconic

Q Many London properties are leasehold, which means you are buying the right to own it for a limited number of years. Make sure that the term of years is long enough to satisfy lenders and that the conditions set out in the lease are not overly restrictive. Q If you are looking to buy a new build, the contract will set out when deposits are payable and what the developer has to provide. These provisions are crucial, as is the status of the developer. You don’t want to pay in advance only to find the developer goes under. Q High service charges can be a problem in multi-occupied blocks, so it is a good idea to verify what sum has been paid before and what is projected. Q Check the locality. If you cannot do so yourself, ask someone to visit the property for you at different times of the day and week. Does a tube line run under the property? Is it on the flight path? Is there a noisy pub nearby? Q Nail down what you want to get out of London. Are you looking for a cultural experience, good schooling, a career move? It is important to understand what makes you tick in order to find the ideal property for you.
