Councilor Al Ryan Alejandre, the spokesperson of the Kadayawan Executive Committee (Execom), said the 3D mapping light show would start after the official opening of the Kadayawan Tribal Village at Magsaysay Park, which was scheduled at 4 p.m. on the same day.

Parents group backs VP Sara stand against Makabayan bloc

MANILA – A parents' group supported Vice President Sara Duterte in standing up against Congress’ Makabayan bloc.

In a statement issued on Monday, the group Yaman, Kalinga, at Pagmamahal ng Magulang (YAKAP) agreed with Duterte that the organizations under the bloc should be exposed due to their alleged alliance with the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army-National Democratic Front of the Philippines (CPP-NPA-NDF).

Ex-DA chief Piñol calls for NFA revival to promote PH banana SEC cancels Flying Bear’s lending license, registration THE SECURITIES and Exchange Commission (SEC) has cancelled the lending license and corporate registration of Flying Bear Lending Corp., operating as Yopeso, Morepeso and Rapidpeso, over its failure to disclose its online lending platforms (OLPs) to the Commission.

In an order dated June 8, the SEC Corporate Governance and Finance Department (CGFD) found that Flying Bear Lending continuously violated SEC Memorandum Circular No. 19, Series of 2019 (SEC MC 19) on the Disclosure Requirements on Advertisements of Financing Companies and Lending Companies and Reporting of Online Lending Platforms.

SEC MC 19 requires lending and financing companies to report their OLPs to the Commission prior to their launch and operation. Lending companies must also disclose in their advertisements and OLPs specific information, such as their corporate names, SEC Registration Numbers, and Certificates of Authority.

The memorandum circular further requires companies to register their OLPs as business or trade names and report any OLP they plan to develop, operate, or utilize no later than 10 days before their launch.

Flying Bear Lending failed to report the operation of its OLPs Yopeso and Morepeso to the Commission. The CGFD then ordered Flying Bear Lending to take down the OLPs from Google Play and other distribution services.

Flying Bear was also found to have similarly violated SEC MC 19 with respect to its other OLP, RapidPeso.

The CGFD also found that the company failed to comply with Republic Act No. 9474, or the Lending Company Regulation Act of 2007 (LCRA), and its Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR). It failed to commence its operations within 120 days from the date of issuance of its CA, and it failed to use at least 51% of its funds for direct lending purposes, violating Rules 3(e) and 3(f) of

The middlemen and traders, he said, are the only ones who profit from the current system.

If not corrected, he said this would further dampen the “production intentions” of farmers and fishermen, leading to industry stagnation.

Our hat off the CHO

Family album MY official online behavioral science day-guide had boldly advised through its scheduled-meme, ‘be brave enough to suck at something new’. And I thought, but I haven’t even finished sucking badly at this one yet. A flashback of early high school memories come flooding back, teachers barking during periodical exams; pass your papers, finished or unfinished!

Here in the present, when day-to-day house chores for us homies are overtaken by unannounced extra things-to-do, they begin to pile up like weekend laundry. As this happened, I thought back to one particular advice I always give my son whenever his assigned tasks piled up. No use blaming yourself, begin again, one tiny step at a time.

I wish it were easier. Last month was a back breaker.

For starters, the frequent afternoon rains made washing laundry difficult. I had seriously began to ponder the thought of stringing the bedroom so that I could still wash and hang them. When at last, a week of dirty clothes finally got out of the wash, new ones took their place, from out of town trips to Gensan and Manila.

However, along with these chore galore unpleasantries, came events which made my July unforgettable and um, equally-pleasant. These were our family reunions and birthdays celebrations which thankfully took my mind off nightmarish images of hanging clothes under overcast skies. First, I got to attend a birthday party for my batchmate’s nonagenarian mom, where I met again my dear friend whom I haven’t seen since the early eighties. Then came two birthday celebrations for my Correspondents:

son, catered to our extended families in General Santos and Davao City. All bases covered there. Last but not least, there was of course, our clan reunions sprung from the short vacation of our niece who flew in from her nursing work in Georgia.

While this piece may have found me a bit down in the beginning, with so many things left undone besides my favorite laundry workout, things aren’t all that bad as yet. Our wee family’s evening prayers at dinner still contain the usual thank yous for this tribe’s health, safety and protection, as we extend the same to our beloved extended families, friends, the neighborhood and the community.

While we’re entitled to rant a bit about a little discomfort coming our way, it’s really counting the blessings and being thankful for all of them that matters in the end.

OUR column missed its space on this page yesterday.

We beg for the indulgence of our readers. Frankly, we have some problems with our internet connection starting early Monday morning. It was restored to full capacity at shortly before 12 noon, already past the time given us by the editorial department for submission for the column to meet the deadline for inclusion in the succeeding day’s issue.

Sorry for our omission. ************************* Last Monday while watching the news on television we felt quite nostalgic.

Yes, we sorely missed an annual activity conducted by the Department of Education (DepEd) with which the company we used to work until our retirement was – and still is – very much involved in – the annual Brigada Eskwela. It is one activity conducted shortly before the opening of each school year and participated in by the school stakeholders among them the teachers themselves, students (some), the parents, the businesses within the school jurisdiction, various community organizations, uniformed personnel of government like the police, military, coastguard, and even firemen.

Davao Light and Power co., a unit belonging to the Aboitiz conglomerate in Davao City usually selects a particular school where its employees converge to do all kinds of work that prepare the school for the return of students and teachers.

The job of coordinating with the school concerned and the employees who are willing to lend their time for the volunteer work, happened to be ours being the head of the Corporate Social Responsibility Department (CSR).

So when we saw the men and women doing the chores like cleaning the school surroundings, carrying debris, painting desks and chairs, cleaning the walls and a lot more work we could not help but be taken back by our memory to the years when we too, did exactly what the Brigada participants last Monday did.

Honestly, whoever thought of the idea that lead to the conceptualization of the Brigada deserves accolade from the school authorities, the parents, the students, and the government.

The engagement of the various stakeholders only indicates one thing – that our people really want school surroundings to be ideal to all Filipino learners. **************************** Finally the City Health Office (CHO) of Davao City has declared the diarrhea outbreak in Toril as already contained – even over. But it caused the death of six persons and the hospitalization of nearly a hundred others. In fact there are still some who are yet in the hospital waiting for the doctor’s go signal for their release. But we are certain that their continued stay in the hospital is not about unpaid medical bills as the city government has committed to assist the patients through the Lingap Center.

Thanks to Mayor Baste for his gesture of generosity.

Without doubt the announcement of the CHO that while the findings as to the cause of the disease outbreak was the presence of ecoli bacteria in the water drunk by customers of street foods from several ambulant vendors along Rasay st. in Toril proper, it was found that the water supplied by the Davao City Water District (DCWD) from the source up to the water meter is free of the bacteria. Meaning, and as confirmed in the test, the bacteria existed only in the water from the meter up to where this is finally used for washing the food, or put inside glasses and served to the customers.

Therefore, residents of Toril district who are not consumers of street foods peddled by vendors along Rasay st. and even those living in other parts of the city supplied water by DCWD can heave a sigh of relief feeling that they are safe of the water they drink daily.

In effectively containing the diarrhea outbreak and successfully determining the cause of the illness the CHO now headed

We hope they will continue to pursue their dedication to their duty. ************************* It looks like the opposition – or those who are so rabid in their desire to have their backed candidate win –is far from ready to accept defeat and perhaps will never respond to the administration’s call for unity.

The other day certain netizen who is hiding himself or herself under the account name of “Knights of Democracy'' posted his/her suspicion that the fire that gutted the main office building of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) in Intramuros, Manila was not caused by an accident or any normal circumstances. The troll masquerading as a simple netizen-blogger insinuated that it was a deliberate burn to do away with all evidence of cheating through the computer. Well, if that is his/her way of manifesting his love of country then let him/her go ahead. But he/she can do better if proofs will be presented – not speculations and intrigues.

Catching up with our neighbors I HAD quite a good talk with my sister Sheela Mae who just arrived from Indonesia over the weekend. She married a French businessman she met in Bali while working as a human resource officer. Her husband, Thomas Colbert, was the operations head of a big hotel in Indonesia.

Anyway, the topic we had was the potential of Mindanao.

We talked about the similarities between Mindanao and Indonesia. Indonesia also possesses multiple potentials and is even harnessed by the natural resources the country is gifted with.

Like Mindanao, the people are friendly and warm, making places like Bali a natural attraction to Australians and other nationalities from Europe and Americas.

She is saying that any investors' first attraction is their ability to understand the advantage of the place.

It made me think about the many potentials that Mindanao is bestowed with.

Mindanao is home to 25.6 million. This is a massive market for commodity products. In the macro context, any economy is hugely driven by consumption, and Mindanao is just any trader's dream of a market to sell products and provide services.

The labor force of Mindanao is 11 million, which is 23% of the country's labor force. Mindanao's workers are in the so-called sweet spot of labor, which means that they are at their prime age, are competent, and can achieve

Mindanao's fertile land is also another advantage. The climatic and topographic features of the island make it a quick reference for producing high-value crops that meet global requirements.

Then she said that one strong driver of Indonesia's economy is its power sector. Electricity is cheap in Indonesia. It allowed them to develop manufacturing industries that process goods into final value domestically.

With cheap electricity used for production and manufacturing, added cost does not burden the final

cost value, making products attractive when sold in the global market.

So power development is a crucial ingredient in the overall deployment of development strategies. MinDA is on top of this initiative, co-chairing with the Department of Energy, the Mindanao Power Monitoring Committee (MPMC).

The strategic roll-out is to achieve a regime of reliable, dependable, and affordable energy espousing a balanced energy mix to support Mindanao's growth. Last week, MinDA hosted a capacity building for the Mindanao LGUs for a renewable energy project for Mindanao.

Twenty-three LGUs from Davao, Zamboanga Peninsula and BARMM joined the event.

MinDA aims to provide electricity to the 1.2 million remote households across Mindanao that continue to suffer from a lack of electricity. It is accepted that any place without electricity is beset with an abject lack of opportunities.

And MinDA is on it in catching up with our BIMPEAGA neighbors.

Mirahan – A Zamboanga gathering of book lovers (AN excerpt from the talk Brother Karl Gaspar delivered at the Books Zamboanga Fair held at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University last July 29, 2022) The overall context that is determining the current state of knowledge production, appropriation, dissemination and popularization – which for so long was dominated by the availability of books and other publications usually accessed through the classroom and libraries – have shifted to other platforms, thanks to the rise of the information age and computer technology. In this postcolonial and post-modern times, radical shifts have taken place in this field with their impact on our approaches to acquiring knowledge.

Everyone knows that today the distribution of knowledge has drastically changed. Owing to the major technological changes, the forms and ways that information is distributed and communicated have consequently been revolutionized. Just consider the shifts taking place through the centuries, from oral tradition to the invention of the press, to the rise of telephones, radios, movies and television, and - in the past few decades - the explosion of the use of the internet, all these extended our ways of communication, as well as knowledge distribution.

These processes have shifted following the four stages of the Industrial Revolution (from the first – with the rise of the usage of coal transforming the economy from agricultural to industrial in 1760s, the second with gas and oil in 1870s, the third with electronics and nuclear

in late 1960s and lastly with the internet and its digital platforms and renewable energy in the new millennium.

With the rise of a new industrial age constituted by the digital revolution, knowledge has become the driver of most modern economies.

Two social theorists have commented on this reality.

According to Manuel Castelles knowledge is a series of networks and flows and that today there is more emphasis on knowledge as product rather than process, which arise not just in the minds of peoples but in their interactions with each other. For Jean-Francois Lyotard, what used to be the traditional way of knowledge acquisition which trained the mind is also becoming obsolete and with it, the idea of knowledge as a set of universal truths. For him there are many truths, many knowledge and many forms of reason leading to the dissolution of the boundaries between traditional disciplines.

While there is no question that humanity has benefited from the blessings that came with the internet (for example: imagine if there was no internet during the two-year period of our isolation because of COVID-19), there are those who also warn us of its shadows and its ugly fea-

We cannot just give up on what used to be the main source of knowledge that helped us to nurture our sense of humanity, helping us grow in age, grace and wisdom. Books and publications will always have a place in humanity’s quest for peace, freedom and justice. Which is why society will always need authors and writers who in turn need all the institutions that help to disseminate their works from publishers to libraries. In a country like the Philippines with limited spaces for such dissemination, holding a book fair is one way to draw both writers and readers together. Power Company Inc. to legal and/or constitutional challenge due to the apparent overlap and possible infringement into the subsisting franchise, permits, and contracts previously granted to North Davao Electric Cooperative Inc.,” Marcos said.
