ZAMBOANGA CITY Mayor Beng Climaco has ordered an investigation into the “mysterious” exodus of Badjao natives from here to Manila after raising suspicions that they may be victims of exploitation and trafficking by unscrupulous individuals.

“We have requested for more vaccines because Zamboanga City has been identified as one of the priority areas of concern in the country. Take this opportunity because it will be an added layer of protection against Covid-19,” Climaco said.

She said the Department of Health (DOH) delivered some 31,500 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines and 28,000 doses of Sinovac vaccines on June 15 further boosting the local government’s mass vaccination program. “The Pfizer vaccines will be solely deployed to Zamboanga City and will cover the first and second doses

of at least 17,500 people and the Sinovac will be distributed to the different municipalities and provinces in Zamboanga Peninsula,” the mayor said.

Climaco thanked Duterte and the IATFMEID, including the DOH for prioritizing Zamboanga City in the allocation of vaccines. She previously asked the national government for more vaccines so that essential workers and uniformed personnel, including tricycle and jeepney drivers can also be inoculated and protected from Covid-19.

9, was also present during the virtual meeting.

At the meeting, Climaco also proposed several recommendations, including the extension until the end of this year of the services of all healthcare personnel of the Department of Health and the contact tracers hired by the Department of the Interior and Local Government to help local governments in responding to the pandemic.

She also suggested the national government harmonize policies for workplace safety in all government offices, and requested for more antigen test kits and person-

al protective equipment for Zamboanga Peninsula.

“Through Secretary Bautista, these proposals were forwarded to the national government’s Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Infectious Diseases (IATF-MEID) for its consideration and approval,” Climaco said.

Just recently, the Regional Coordinated Operations to Defeat Epidemic (CODE) Team commended Climaco, who heads the local Covid-19 task force, for her active role in addressing the health crisis.

Because of the continuing exodus of Badjaos to Manila, Climaco said she has written Justice Undersecretary Emmeline Villar, who is in-charge of the Inter-Agency Council against Trafficking, to intervene and to thoroughly investigate the mass departure of Badjaos to Manila, as well as provide long-term solutions to protect the interest of the indigenous peoples.

In her letter, Climaco said: “It is highly unusual for a very large group of Badjaos to be suddenly in an exodus from Zamboanga to Manila. The lives of these indigenous peoples are in our hands and we have to look for

an immediate and lasting solution. Being an advocate and champion on the rights of every individual we both share the same aspiration to protect their best interest.”

The mayor said she also made a similar request to Social Welfare Secretary Rolando Bautista, who is the Cabinet Officer Responsible for Development and Security (CORDS) in Zamboanga Peninsula or Region 9.

Climaco said she is concerned about the safety and welfare of the Badjaos. “They may be victims of exploitation and trafficking by unscrupulous people,” she said.

She said the Badjaos were immediately tested for Covid-19 and provided food and shelter and oth-

er services by the Department of Social Welfare and Development and its local counterpart led by Socorro Rojas as part of safety and health protocols.

Climaco said she learned that the Badjaos arrived in Manila on June 4, but there were also other groups who went to the Philippine capital as early as April 27 and also on May 30. It was unclear how they were able to travel by boat to Manila and eventually ended up on the streets begging for alms or money.

MECQ refers to Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine. It is one of many stricter measures of the national government’s Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases to control the spread of Covid-19 in the community.

Zamboanga City has been under MECQ since May 8 and extended by President Rodrigo Duterte again until June 30 based on the recommendation of the IATF-MEID and medical experts.

Aside from Zamboanga City, Duterte also prolonged up to the end of June the MECQ classification in Region 9 which comprises the provinces of Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Sur, including Pagadian City;

Zamboanga del Norte and the cities of Dapitan and Dipolog.

Mayor Beng Climaco, head of the local Covid-19 task force, has ordered social workers to provide food aid to those affected by the lockdowns. The aid will consist of 10kilos of rice and canned goods, including hygiene kits or bath and laundry soaps, toothpaste and toothbrush and in some cases, also milk and diapers.

The purchase of the rice by the local government was under the regular budget of the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) and the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and part of the 2021 Executive Budget.

The purchase of the rice and other relief goods strictly followed the procedures specified under the Procurement Act, according to Climaco.

in Barangay Tetuan now serves as the temporary repository of the rice because the CSWDO warehouse - which will also set to undergo renovation - is not sufficient to keep a large volume of welfare goods.

Climaco warned those spreading libellous posts and disinformation in social media can be charged of violating the penal laws. “The public is advised to refrain from spreading unsubstantiated posts and to follow only legitimate sources of information such as the official social media channels of the City Government,” she said.

The mayor has filed libel charges last year against those she accused of besmirching her reputation. Her supporters also urged Climaco to charge the others who continue to malign her in social media regardless of who they are and for the police to run after them.

THE LOCAL government’s Covid-19 vaccine information campaign continues in an effort to fight misinformation and at the same time promote awareness and public acceptance as more medicines arrive in an effort to achieve herd immunity in Zamboanga City.

Mayor Beng Climaco, head of the local Covid-19 task force, has repeatedly urged residents to register online through zambocovax.com or in barangay health centers so they can be vaccinated against the deadly virus which attacks the respiratory system.

Just recently, members of the Mujer LGBT Inc. were invited to a virtual information session spearheaded by the City Risk Communication and Demand Generation Team composed of the Public

Information Division, City Health Office and Philippine Information Agency, with technical support from the Computer Services Division.

Climaco said the series of Covid-19 information sessions with different sectors and groups are aimed at providing clear and accurate information about the virus and the goal of immunizing Zamboanguenos against Covid-19.

“Por favor, no crea todo lo que lee en las social media. Always check the information from official government sources.

Las vacunas son seguras y salvan vidas,” the mayor said.

The Department of Health (DOH) in April also launched the #ChecktheFAQs campaign to emphasize the importance

of accurate information in the fight against the virus and encourage the public to fact-check information that they come across.

Facebook, Google, TikTok and Twitter pledged their support to the DOH initiative in line with their respective missions to help fight the pandemic and vaccine misinformation in social media.

“As Covid-19 vaccination becomes top priority across the globe, we must also race to fight disinformation and misinformation surrounding Covid-19 vaccines and the pandemic. Spreading the right information can save lives,” said DOH’s Dr. Beverly Lorraine Ho, Director of the Disease Prevention and Control Bureau and the Health Promotion Bureau. (Zamboanga Post)

Our Lord scatters the seeds; though small it may begin but will grow to spread its branches to give shade. “To what shall we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable can we use for it?

It is like a mustard seed that, when it is sown in the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth. But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the largest of plants and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade.”

We are the seeds that God has planted, our talents, potentials and gifts can be measured by our generosity to allow Jesus to nourish them to be productive. As a little girl, I was very shy and did not have the courage to speak in classroom recitation. Bien huyain y silencio! Because of my mother’s decision, I was blessed to study in the U.S. with my brother. It was a “cultural shock” for me to adjust in my adolescent road to independence.

My mom’s sisters took care of us, and I am very grateful to my Ninang Pet and Tita Viony. I learned hard work, household chores and took on baby sitting and my first job on inventory at the Burlington Coat Factory. There were nights I would shake in fear of the next day, in a world totally different from home. I was bullied because I was Asian and did not give-in to peer pressure. I would miss my parents and Zamboanga City, but had to persevere to be able to finish High School. God sustained me till I graduated.
