AdZU Welcomes Its 4th University President By Florence Lae Teh and Fiona Elisse Morales As the Ateneo de Zamboanga University commemorates its journey beyond its centennial year, the second oldest Jesuit school in the Philippines installs Fr. Karel S. San Juan, SJ as its fourth president. The investiture was held last November 23, 2013 at the University Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The AdZU Board of Trustees had formally elected Fr. Karel on February 23, 2013 to succeed the previous president, Fr. Antonio F. Moreno SJ, as the latter has currently assumed the position of 11th Father Provincial of the Philippines. Due to Fr. Karel’s 30-day retreat during the said election, the decision couldn’t be expressed to him and be publicized immediately. Fr. Wilfredo M. Samson SJ was appointed as the University OIC for the first semester of the school year 2013-2014, as the newly installed president couldn’t

These triple directions cover many things, perhaps, everything that we have to do, and that we need to do in the University, in Zamboanga city, in the country, and beyond, rooted in a spirituality that integrates excellence and service, competence and compassion,” Fr. Karel mentioned during his investiture speech as he intends to pursue these three strategic directions to achieve the university’s Vision and Mission. Fr.
