AdZU Welcomes Its 4th University President

By Florence Lae Teh and Fiona Elisse Morales As the Ateneo de Zamboanga University commemorates its journey beyond its centennial year, the second oldest Jesuit school in the Philippines installs Fr. Karel S. San Juan, SJ as its fourth president. The investiture was held last November 23, 2013 at the University Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The AdZU Board of Trustees had formally elected Fr. Karel on February 23, 2013 to succeed the previous president, Fr. Antonio F. Moreno SJ, as the latter has currently assumed the position of 11th Father Provincial of the Philippines. Due to Fr. Karel’s 30-day retreat during the said election, the decision couldn’t be expressed to him and be publicized immediately. Fr. Wilfredo M. One of the contests was the Typing Competition for the Grade 7 students. Among all vying contenders, Joshua Rommel Vargas of 7-St. Xavier bagged the first place. Rovic Carmelotes and Omar Shariff Juaini of 7-St. Borgia got the second and third place respectively.

Fr. Karel is entrusted to AdZU with an extensive variety of professional welfares and work proficiencies. In the summer between sophomore and junior year of his tertiary education, he joined a voluntary immersion program by AdMU’s Office for Social Concern and Involvement (OCSI). As the program officer, he travelled to different Ateneo schools and he was assigned in AdZU to work at the Social Awareness and Community Service Involvement Office (SACSI). As soon as he graduated college, he proceeded into social development work by means of

‘Ateneo Debate Congress’ Competes In Debate Tournaments

By Bolyn Garcia The 28th Mindanao Parliamentary Debate Union hosted by the University of Mindanao, was held at the University of Mindanao, Matina Campus in Davao City on September 6-8 2013. The Ateneo de Zamboanga University sent college and high school students to compete in the said contest along with various schools around Visayas and Mindanao.

Two teams were sent by the Ateneo Debate Congress of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University High School. Team A was composed of Debra Ann Ponce and Caryl Tinae, both from IV-St. Arrowsmith while Team B included Kathrina Gonzales and Jermiss Muarip from III-St. Faber. On the other hand, Jericho Ortega from III-St. Faber and Sofiya Salim from IV-St. Arrowsmith competed as adjudicators. The delegates were accompanied by their moderators Mr. Espiridion Atilano Jr. and Mr. Rowil Santinlo. Team A qualified for the pre-quarter finals and ranked 9th in the elimination round. Sofiya Salim broke in as a quarterfinalist adjudicator. The champions of the tournament were college students Kelvin Culajara and Glenn Alcala.

2nd Ateneo Campus Journalism Camp: Writing Stories and Building Camaraderie

By Florence Lae Teh The Ateneo de Zamboanga University High School hosted its 2nd Ateneo Campus Journalism Camp last September 6-7, 2013 at Fr. William H. Kreutz Campus, Tumaga with the theme “Journalism Beyond School Borders.” Various campus journalists across Region IX namely Ateneo de Zamboanga University High School, Marcelo Spinola School, Marian College, Sibulao National High School, Tawi -Tawi Regional Agricultural College, and Ebenezer Bible College participated in the said camp.

The 3-day camp started with a program held last September 6, 2013. Alessi Chloie Alvarez of the Blue Eagle Publications and Justine Frances Cabalay of La Liga Atenista led the prayer and the singing of the national anthem respectively. Afterwards, delegates were acknowledged and Mr. Conrado Balatbat, Principal of AdZU HS gave his welcome remarks. Fr. Albert Alejo SJ, Director of the Ateneo

The delegates had different activities which enhanced their journalism skills and helped them build camaraderie among journalists. They were grouped into 12 teams. Each team was assigned to cover sports activities and other events and come up with a newspaper.

On the first day of the camp, they attended various concurrent sessions of news writing, feature or opinion writing, sports writing, page layouting, cartooning, and photography. Ms. Frencie Carrreon gave a lecture about the basics of journalism and peace journalism. In the afternoon, non-Atenean participants watched “Biyernes, 4:00 Ng Hapon”, a play by Punlaan in celebration of their 6th anniversary. The day ended with a welcome dinner for the delegates as well as a mini-concert of Coro Concordia de Aguilas.

Mindanao Week of Peace - The Healing

By Jeniss Mile Muarip Due to a long break since the siege in Zamboanga City, the Ateneo de Zamboanga University lengthened the break and provided an alternative academic work for their students.

The classes which resumed last November 5, 2013 started with debriefing sessions concerning the previous event that had happened in the city.

In relation to the violence that affected the Zamboangueños, the Social Studies Department launched a program pertaining to peace with the theme: “Lord Heal Our Land”.

This program includes four different activities for each year level in the high school.

For the seventh grade, cake-designing contest was organized. The said contest aimed to foster the creativity of the students and imply a reflection on harmony and solidarity with the world through peace -themed designed cakes. Three selected students in each class participated in this activity. The eighth grade were asked to make a peace-themed card while the juniors were asked to write a photo-essay. The seniors were in turn asked to write an essay which are both anchored on the same theme.

Winners of each contest were announced on November 29, during the flag retreat ceremony.

The Epilogue

By Alessi Alvarez In 2012, the Ateneo de Zamboanga University was blessed with two scholastics coming from Bohol and Leyte. We’ve seen them chatting and laughing with their students. We’ve witnessed the renewal of their vows of chastity, poverty and obedience. We’ve even heard of their stories when their families were affected by the natural disasters that struck our country.

Brother Jereme Asunto, the moderator of IV – St. Edmund Arrowsmith, is the lovable scholastic from Bohol. No one can ever frown when he’s wearing his infectious smile and laugh. Debra Ponce, a student of IV- St. Arrowsmith, said, “Bro. Jereme is a happy man. He knows a lot about what's happening in the society, and he transforms lives by making his students do something about it.”

The cheerful scholastic from Tacloban, Leyte and moderator of III – St. Peter Faber is no other than Brother Arman Samonte. Though he may seem intimidating at first, Brother Arman is actually a fun and caring person. “Bro. Arman is one of the coolest Jesuits I know. His quizzes, although challenging, give me a boost to do better and try harder and hopefully, with much effort, I will succeed.” said CJ Cabato, a student of III – St. Peter Faber.

Unfortunately, some good things must come to an end. We are not only saying farewell to the school year 2013 – 2014, but also to Scholastics Jereme Asunto and Arman Samonte.

By Rey Bautista Junk food is the everpresent temptation that we see every day, the guilty little pleasure that we indulge ourselves into from time to time, and the ultimate test of willpower . This seemingly insignificant part of diet is one we often take for granted, which enables the feisty food to lower our defenses, turning one bite into two and two bites into three and before we know it, we eat a whole pack, get sick and get diagnosed with diabetes. Junk food, as most people say, is bad for our health because it can lead to serious health problems such as obesity, increase of blood pressure, and heart diseases. Despite the consequences, people keep on consuming these heralds of bad health.

Q: What did you do before you became a Jesuit?

Bro. Arman: I taught in a medical school in Tacloban City and took up my masters degree in La Salle.

Bro. Jereme: I finished business management in college and worked as a marketing officer for a government-owned and controlled corporation.

Q: Why did you decide to become a Jesuit? What were the factors that contributed to your decision?

Bro. Arman: I wanted to be a priest and an educator.

Bro. Jereme: As a child, I really wanted to become a First we must see why junk food is so dangerous. The word “junk” in its name is an immediate red flag that signifies it is bad, really bad because it means “rubbish”, “cheap” or “worthless”. Eating junk food is like giving our car fuel to a dead hobo.

No matter how good it sounds at the beginning, it will just turn out useless in the end. It can raise our blood pressure, increase our cholesterol and make us fat and lazy. Junk food has little to none nutritional value. Instead, it gives us fat, sugar, salt, calories and pain. These things are the bane to our good health.

Take fat for example. It can make us obese and less active. It can also give us heart problems because our heart gets choked in our own blubber. The amount of sodium also contributes to giving our weakened heart a bad time. Soft drinks can also increase the chance of us having painful kidney stones.

The things mentioned are just some of the many dangers junk food contributes to our body.

As stated earlier, junk food is that guilty little pleasure that never seems to die, like movie villains who always seem to come back just in time for another movie. Junk food is so appealing that we can’t seem to resist them though we know of the harm they bring.

One of the reasons why people eat the “junk” is because of how addictive it is. The fulfilling

priest, but not for the good reasons. Growing up, the desire for the priesthood slowly nawawala [sic]. It came back when I was already working. After almost five years of working, I realized that there is more to life than what I was doing, though I was happy with my work.

Q: Do you have a bucket list for your stay in Zamboanga?

Bro. Arman: I’ve been to Sta. Cruz Island, tried eating Satti and knicker bocker and experienced the conflict... I guess nothing more.

Bro. Jereme: I want to eat curacha, visit Sta. Cruz Island, speak the language, and visit Basilan and Jolo, to name some.

Q: How do you find teaching in Ateneo?

Bro. Arman: I find it fun and challenging.

Bro. Jereme: I realized that teaching is not just a career but a vocation. It takes passion and dedication to be a good teacher. It’s not an 8-hour work but 24/7. My patience was really tested. It is difficult pala to handle high school kids. But it’s fun. I learned so much about myself. I enjoyed listening to the stories of the students.

Q: This school year is your last year to teach in Ateneo de Zamboanga University. What were your thoughts when your last term began?

Bro. Arman: I felt uneasy because of a different assignment. I was asked to handle the Campus Ministry, but I requested for at least one class.

Bro. Jereme: A mixture of sadness and excitement.

Sad because I will be leaving Zamboanga, and I will miss the students, friends, people and the food. Excited because I will begin a new stage of the Jesuit formation, which is the Theologate. turn to page 11 crackle of chips when we bite them, the sweet sugar rush we feel every time we drink sodas, the saccharine scent of candies when we tear them open - these are all tantalizing traps that lure us in, appealing to us, forcing us to buy more to fulfill the urge, making us eat more, which continues the vicious circle, leaving us fat, sick and lonely in the end. Fighting junk food is like fighting a zombie: just when we think we had killed it and we let our guard down, suddenly, we get bitten, get infected and invaded. Like the zombie attack, junk food slowly eats us up and the last thing we know, our body starts to crave for more and that we’ve become a junk food addict! Addiction to junk food, just like all other addiction sometimes never dies. We have to be of a steely conviction, able to resist the alluring siren songs of the dreaded health destroyer in order to survive.

Junk food is one of those things we have to live with and have a hard time getting rid of. It’s like that itch that we can’t seem to get enough of. It also has a way of coming back from the dead, coming back with the hope of ensnaring us in its trap of fatty and sugary despair, in an attempt to bring us back to its addictive grasp. It is one of the most interesting tests of resistance to sweet temptations that constantly attracts us and makes us ignore the obvious down sides.

Warlocks and witches, vampires and werewolves, pixies and elves; most probably, for students like us, it’s ridiculous to believe in such stuff. But what couldn’t be seen, doesn’t mean it’s not there. What couldn’t be felt doesn’t mean it’s not around. Clarissa “Clary” Fray, aged fifteen, thought life was perfect. She had a wonderful mother, a loving uncle, and an ever-concerned best friend. She thinks that life was all easy and normal, going to Pandemonium, attending poetry concerts, and drawing---but no. There’s more than that. Clary finds herself being capable of seeing magical creatures like demons, vampires, etc. For a “mundane” (non-magical person), it’s impossible to see what she does. From Pandemonium, she finds her apartment trashed, her mother missing, and a monstrous demon. Clary, unsure of what she sees, battles the demon by shoving down a device called “sensor” (which is used to track demons, given by Jace, a Shadow hunter friend) down to its throat. She wakes up in a room, with unfamiliar faces around her. They were the Shadow hunters (people who fight demons). Through the help of her friends, she discovers she has Shadow hunter blood. All this time, a barrier has formed in Clary’s mind, her memories of seeing magical creatures have been blocked, due to her mother, wanting her to live a normal human life. Clary, along with her friends is on a quest to find the “Mortal Cup” (which turns ordinary people into shadow hunters), then give it to their tutor, Hodge. But a conflict arises, Hodge works for Valentine, Clary and Jace’s father. He uses the Mortal Cup in order to turn innocent children into his kind, all for revenge. He flees to the city of Idris (home place of all shadow hunters) through a portal, while Jace and Clary find their mother in coma. The book truly gives readers that eyebrow-raising… turn to page 19

Sea of Monsters is probably one of the talked-about movies of the year. Of course, the anticipation was inevitable; after all, it is the sequel to the box office hit Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. It was even a hot commodity among other filmmakers, which explains why there’s this 15 minutes or so worth of trailers on the film reel.

The film begins, with Percy giving a very, very brief account of the background of the film, showing how Thalia Grace became a…not a demigod, not a community leader…not even a warrior. Thalia Grace became a tree!

Her father, Zeus himself, made Thalia a tree so that her soul won’t go to the underworld.

That tree seems to emit some kind of shield that protects Camp Halfblood, home to the half-god – half-human creatures of the Earth. Percy Jackson is the son of Poseidon, who sometimes has control of the water. He doesn’t always get to control the water, though – it probably depends on his willpower. Despite that, since he is the son of Poseidon, simply having his wounds in the water would make them heal. If only life were that easy. However, despite all his heroics in Lightning Thief, Percy feels insignificant, as if he’s the least important person in the world. Sir Omar – someone needs a counseling session!

In the film, we are introduced to Clarisse La Rue, the woman who believes she is better than Percy. She’s very arrogant, to say the least. She keeps on giving Percy “advice” that tries to discourage him. What a downer. We are also introduced to Tyson, Percy’s recently found half-brother, who happens to be a Cyclops. He doesn’t want to be seen as a Cyclops actually, and often wears glasses or mist, the magical perfume that makes mystical things normal, giving Tyson two eyes.

The plot is simple: Percy is given a mission to retrieve the Golden Fleece, due to a prophecy. The prophecy doesn’t mention Percy’s name exactly, as most prophecies do, but the man in the prophecy is described to be a son of one of the 3 major gods – Poseidon being one of them. Apparently Percy is the only surviving son of Poseidon according to authorities – what about Tyson, another son of Poseidon? Anyway, the camp assigned Clarisse to do the mission, but Percy wanted the prophecy to come true. Tongue-tied

By Alessi Alvarez To those who are affected by the K-12 Program, please do not be surprised when you hear your math teacher say, “Medya de ciento es singkwenta.”

You are probably getting sick of hearing the term “K-12” over and over again. You might even hit me for repeating it in this column. The K-12 Program is the government’s way of enhancing the quality of education in the Philippines so that we will be on the same boat with other countries. It went through several debates and even though it was already passed, people still continue to argue.

However, there’s a lot more to K-12 than just having Primary Education for six years, Junior High School for four years, and Senior High School for two years. One of its features leads to an even more heated debate than the program itself.

The Mother Tongue – Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE), a feature of the K-12 Program, deals with the use of the mother tongue as a language of instruction from kindergarten to third grade. For this school year, Bahasa Sug, Bikol, Cebuano, Chabacano, Hiligaynon, Iloko, Kapampangan, Maguindanaoan, Maranao, Pangasinense, Tagalog and Waray mother tongues are used. Others will come in the next school years. Filipino and English will be gradually introduced in fourth grade until they become primary languages of instruction in secondary years. Senator Ralph Recto and Congressman Magi Gunigundo are the authors of the bill. President Benigno Aquino III approved it on May 15, 2013.

Those who speak the mother tongue used (in class) will obviously be the first to benefit from this feature. The Department of Education monitored some MTB-MLE schools and noted that the classes were alive. Students were actively participating in their discussions. They would do anything to get the teacher’s attention just to share their thoughts. Each one had a say. The shifting of topics from one to another was conspicuous.

The use of the mother tongue clearly made a great impact on the students. It pulled them deeper into the discussion, and they seemed to enjoy it. The teachers also commended the MTB-MLE, saying that it made them look back on their roots and appreciate their culture. It’s a huge opportunity for them to learn and preserve their culture.

While it brought joy to some students and teachers, we noticed several loopholes in this feature.

Let’s look at it in the microscopic view. Make sure you take note of it the whole time.

Majority of our population speaks English.

With the MTB- MLE, confusion may rise among students. In the first place, not all words in the mother tongue are available in English, especially mathematical and scientific terms. Our textbooks are in English. It says, “Another term for myopia is shortsightedness,” and the teacher explains it as “El otro termino para na myopia es akel hinde ta pwede

How will these pupils understand?

These languages differ in grammar, and they will have a hard time adjusting as they shift to English and Filipino in fourth grade. Not to mention, having to pass Filipino and English tests to be promoted to the next level.

Kilig Much?

By Fiona Morales I know, I know. You probably didn’t read the tile normally. You read it like how Vice Ganda says it. What is kilig? Kilig, as what most online urban dictionaries define, is the sudden feeling of inexplicable joy when one gets something romantic or something idealistic happens. When someone gets kilig, he or she (well mostly she), may experience butterflies in his or her stomach, shivering down the spine, uncontrollable smiling (much like a retard smiling alone) and an inner conflict between hope of something wished for and reality. To make the latter easier to understand, just think of the famous line, “Is this the real life? Or is this just fantasy?”

Kilig commonly happens to ladies, but of course we would let the voice of men be heard. Men sometimes find it annoying when girls get kilig (admit it), and women find it a bit gay when guys get kilig. Guys, all of us have feelings, okay? Everyone has the right to get kilig. This article would be a rundown of what makes men and women kilig. So let’s shoot the question. What causes kilig?

Seeing topless photos of Ian Somerhalder, GIFs of One Direction or the melting stare of Logan Lerman. Girls could go gaga over them. True and obsessed fangirls would even kiss their screens when these photos appear on their dashboards.

Receiving sweet notes from guys – Girls-who -have-guys-that-like-them represent! Whether they give it to you personally or through your friends, slip them into your locker or leave them in your desk, whichever manner suits them, it makes us girls blush.

But these days, guys rarely do those anymore! Being old-fashioned can be sweet sometimes, you know?

Daydreaming about you and your crush ending up together – Whether it would be a real guy or your celebrity crush, daydreaming during the dullest minutes of your classes about how he would give you flowers and strolling together in a park. There is nothing wrong about dreaming right? You will never notice reality unless your best friend or seatmate slaps you because you are staring at the building of San Ignacio while your teacher is talking about Mitosis or how x needs to be found yet again.

Because they know that not all girls get comfortable around people who like them (consider yourself lucky if a girl you like is comfortable talking to you, you know how awkward it can get).

Seeing that special someone happy – What could be happier than seeing the love of your life happy? As the saying goes, “As long as she’s happy, I’m happy.” It just sends shivers down your spine to see happiness in the face of your “happiness.” (If you know what I mean.) Aren’t you just happy?

Kilig is normal, people. There is nothing wrong with getting kilig. You are not human when you can’t relate with the subject. No need to deny it.

All of us have been there. Even being just a friend of someone who shares a kilig story gets you all kilig yourself! Getting butterflies in your stomach when

The RotEx Students

By Alessi Alvarez and Cheska Folgo Walking to school on a normal school day, waving at some acquaintances, going to your usual spot every morning and noticing a small crowd taking pictures with…“Woah, wait. Was that a foreigner in our school uniform?”

Whether you deny it or not, we know that, you have probably experienced this while waiting for the gates to be opened every morning. They may have been introduced during the assembly, but because you were at the back of the line, or most likely, late, you did not get the chance to see them.

It is no wonder that some of you were surprised because you may not have been expecting a new set of Rotary Exchange (RotEx) students this year. We had three of them last year, and this time around, we are having four. It took them a year to prepare everything from application letters to meetings - which gave them enough time to reflect and look for some motivation. And because it’s more fun in the Philippines, they chose us!

To cut the chase, let us see how Luisa Stricker (IV – St. Edmund Arrowsmith), Aurelle Piscciota (IV – St. Robert Bellarmine), Joanie Houbé (IV – St. John De Britto) and Maximilian Heinz (IV – Stephen Pongracz) are doing in our interview with them.

BEP: So far, what is this one thing that you really like about the Philippines?

Luisa: The people and the mangoes.

Sir Pelayo, as he is fondly called in school is a famous Physical Education teacher. *wink*. Even when I ask my cousins, who are graduates of AdZU High School, if they know Sir Pelayo, they would react and would blabber thoughts and funny experiences with him when they were his students. What they loved about him so much is that he can evoke discipline in his class and at the same time crack jokes without losing the respect of students. This makes class sessions with him so much fun! Being that in the class for ten long years now, Sir Pelayo has evidently left a mark in the hearts of his students.

Those who became his students once can be considered lucky because this year, he was appointed Youth Service Enhancement Program-Training for Engaged Citizenship (YSEP-TEC) in-charge and the High School Athletics Coordinator, which kept him in his office at the basement instead of the field where he usually conducts classes.

How do you feel about your new positions?

(Well, I am comfortable because I’m in my comfort zone. Of course I am a coach, an athlete, a PE major, so whatever challenges come my way, I can do better because the tasks given to me are in line with my work.

What do you miss most being a P.E teacher?

People now in Leyte and other parts of Visayas are suffering from the consequences that Typhoon Yolanda left. People are spelling out the word “HELP” on the roads. One thing is for sure, Sir Pelayo and his teachings will surely be missed by the AdZU High School students.

You use the front camera of your iPhone 5 or whatever in-the-trend phone. You tilt it to the perfect angle of how you want it to be, and then you turn your head to the desired side. You pose (with all those duck faces, peace signs, tongue-outs, and a lot more), press the button, and voila! You post it on your social networking accounts, namely Facebook, Twitter, especially Instagram, and use the hashtag selfie (#selfie) as the caption of the picture. Now, you wait for the likes and comments, expecting people to say, “Ganda!” with the heart emoticon. Likewise, those people who commented would also expect you to say, “Same to you!” with those heart emoticons again. It’s basically flattering and vice-versa.

The world-known selfie is a simple photograph of yourself which you capture by yourself. It is usually taken at an arm’s length, which is the most common one and where you probably make sure that your arm is visible in the picture. You show off your OOTD or Outfit of the Day, your fancy phone case, or your newly polished nails in a mirror shot. Whatever your intention is, as long as your face covers 80% of the background, it is a certified selfie.

The Bully Project

By Alessi Alvarez and Cheska Folgo For about a million kids in the world, instead of excitement or sadness, fear resides in their hearts as they walk into the gates of their school.

Everyone wants to be on equal ground with other people. However, there are times when people set others apart from the rest, and choose only who they want to respect. And as ugly as this may sound, we are sometimes one of those people. We all see school as a survival of the fittest. This caused a massive effect on the students’ mindset of a school – a place where everyone should be cool, should fit in with the latest trend, and should be good in the fields of position and popularity. Anyone who does not follow should be scorned. It gave birth to gossiping, teasing, fighting and backstabbing in the real and cyber world. They all aim to hurt the person physically, emotionally, and mentally. These small pieces form the bigger picture – bullying.

On June 14, the Bully Project – Philippines launched an anti-bullying campaign dubbed as “Not in Our School” in the Ateneo de Zamboanga University High School. Chris Tiu, a TV host, commercial model, former Ateneo Blue Eagle Basketball team member, led the campaign together with the National Youth Commission Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Leon G. Flores III. It aimed to raise the awareness of bullying to all students, as bullying increases in an alarming rate. The campaign is privately run and relatively new. We are one of the first schools to witness it.

A movie entitled “Bully” served as a spring board for the project. It is a documentary film that shows how

Since these young people are caught in the middle of childhood and adulthood, they tend to act childish or adult-like which can actually bring forth bullying because of the differences, and these young people have different levels of maturity.

The movie serves as a wake-up call to everyone involved: The victim The documentary film focuses on three American students. Alex Libby, a 12year-old kid, was the favorite victim of the bullies in their school bus. He was pushed around, stabbed with pens, and abused verbally. There was even a time when one of the kids decided to bang his head on the steel chairs of the bus. Kelby Johnson, a 14-year-old, admitted that she was a lesbian. A group of male teenagers intentionally bumped her with a minivan. We also have 14year-old Ja’Meya Jackson, who was always picked on by her classmates.

All of them had different reactions to the ill treatment of their classmates. Alex said, “They hurt me so much that I don’t feel the pain anymore.” Kelby tried to commit suicide thrice. Ja’Meya brought a gun to her school and aimed at anyone who tried to bully her.

As we can see, the victim will react in two ways: violence on oneself and violence against other people. Some just take it in. They absorb whatever’s thrown to them and suffer emotionally. They see themselves as someone who is not worth it. Eventually, this will lead them to detest themselves. Bullying is one of the major causes of suicide. There are times when the victim resorts to violence with the intention of defending himself or herself. Oftentimes, bullies are those who are exposed to violence or whose parents are abroad. Bullies who are abused in their community make them feel obligated to take out their experiences and sufferings on others. Without adult supervision, it is harder for children to learn the basic moral values to be observed in a kind of society.

Mr. Flores strongly urges a restorative approach to the bully. He said, “It is important for the bully to realize the consequences of his or her actions, and make him or her accountable. There should be some form of accountability, like community service.”

Community service, thankfully, is implemented in our school.

A person is shaped by their experiences and choices.

Bullies need our help to restore them back to their original state, and make them good again.

The Good News The alarming rate of bullying has already caught the attention of the government. The Department of Education came up with the Child Protection Policy. It sets mechanisms within schools to report and to protect children from all forms of bullying.

The Anti-Bullying Law was signed this year. It requires all elementary and secondary schools to adopt policies to prevent and address the acts of bullying in institutions. It contains the grounds for bullying and the policies schools should adopt. It sets penalties for schools that do not have any mechanisms to report bullying and to protect the bullied and the bullies.

With the government’s intervention, it can greatly help in lowering the cases of bullying. turn to page 19

By Chloe Cabahug One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child.

– Carl Jung Teachers do not only teach students, but also help in shaping and forming a bright and successful future. Teachers are the people who educate the youth—the future leaders and heirs of this society.

Teachers, like they say, are the students’ second parents. Parents entrust their children to the school, and in turn, to the teachers because parents know that they are well-trained and chosen by the administration. Guiding the students during the hours of their stay in school and making sure of their safety, to name a few, are just some of the many responsibilities of teachers.

As noticed, many teachers leave the High

School every year for reasons including better pay and opportunities outside. But on the brighter side, this annual exodus also opens up many doors for new aspiring educators.

The Ateneo de Zamboanga University High School community welcomes the new set of trained educators for School Year 2013 – 2014. In fact, many key aspects of the book are changed, from Clarisse being stuck in the monster’s belly before Percy and his friends got there (the book had Clarisse rescuing Percy from a hydra, and they didn’t go to the monster’s belly in the first place), to Chiron getting a smaller role in the movie than the book. The Sea of Monsters (the place that the movie is named after) only appears for about 10 minutes.

(Why name it Sea of Monsters then?)

The result? A not so nicely done adaptation.

We all know that many great stories are like rollercoaster rides, where there are ups and downs – especially at the climax. However, the story literally shows Percy and his friends riding a roller coaster during the climax!

It is worth pointing out though that, unlike the regular coaster, this particular one does not go up or down, which is kind of like describing the movie.

Yes, there may be many victories, but those victories seem to go all in a straight line – the bad guys keep on losing and losing as well, and the movie can get boring.

They seemed to have made these changes to the story for two reasons: one, so that they can make the movie shorter – and two, so that they can accommodate more visual effects. As epic as the fights are, though, everything doesn’t seem convincing. Okay, so maybe you will enjoy the extreme, obviously computer-generated monster in the end, and all the epic battles with all the epic special effects; just don’t expect to feel amazed.

To offset the bad script, it is great to see good actors in here. Percy was admirably played by Logan

Lerman, who can give plenty of emotions. Clarisse (Leven Rambin), Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario), Jake Abel (Luke Castellan) and Tyson the Cyclops (Douglas Smith) all had admirable performances.

However, I have to single out Brandon T. Jackson as the best actor of the group. Playing Grover Underwood, he managed to bring out the best of Grover’s personality, which ranges from the crazy, to the clown, and just plain weird.

It’s still a bad choice to change many aspects of the book, however. The package as a whole feels emotionless. There isn’t much in terms of emotional events either. Pretty much, there is only one person who dies in this movie – and yet he comes back.

Movies are made to entertain us, to make us feel, to surprise us and to amaze us in spectacular ways.

Does “Sea of Monsters” pass as looking spectacular?

Yes. Though the CGI isn’t convincing as I have said, it does look beautiful. Does it entertain? Yes. Does it pass at everything else? No. I’ll admit though, most people aren’t like me.

So, here’s the verdict: If having a darn fun time is more of a priority than being sucked into a story and feeling all the emotions, then this is for you. To be fair, there were light and happy moments, there were many jokes, and look out for the appearance of memes. The jokes and the memes, and Grover wearing a dress would probably entertain you enough.

Just don’t expect it to be good or deep enough for you to clap, because unlike most movies, no one at the theatre clapped at all. Probably they needed to go to the toilet so bad they didn’t care about the ending – just like how I felt.

Bet my buttons, you probably are confused with what the title means. Simple as a flick of a wand, it is just the combined initial syllables of General Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Having these four topics in one subject area for a year is basically the system of the 1st and 2nd years. Well for that matter, they are not called as 1st years and 2nd years anymore. Following the K-12 curriculum, they are now the Grade 7s and Grade 8s.

I suppose all of us know what K-12 is, right?

Well, for the benefit of those who don’t, K-12 is a school system from kindergarten to twelfth grade.

Students under this curriculum study from Kinder to Grade 6 (which is the former elementary system) then Grade 7 to Grade 10 (which is the former high school system) and lastly, the addition of two more years – the Grades 11 and 12 – before going to college.

In K-12, studying the Science subject already varies from quarter to quarter. Students are expected to learn General Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics which are divided in 4 quarters in one year.

For example, they will have Physics for the 1st quarter, then Biology for the 2nd, Chemistry for the 3rd, and then General Science for the 4th quarter. The arrangement may vary depending on the teachers.

All students and teachers are expected to adapt to these changes.

It brings benefits for the Grade 7s and Grade 8s anyway. The younger students would already have prior knowledge about these four topics whenever they are introduced to them as a connection with the

The “Not In Our School” Anti-Bullying campaign successfully raised awareness of bullying in our school. It’s now our job to continue it. We are their eyes and ears. Anyone can be bullied because bullying does not choose any age or gender. A student may bully a student, a student may bully a teacher, or even a teacher may bully a student.

Hence, everyone must be aware of the law to avoid further conflicts and protect each other’s welfare.

The issue on bullying calls out for equality.

We must always remember Mr. Flores’ words, “What matters is we’re all human beings and we should really ground our dealings in mutual respect.”

Let us make a stand.

So, what if Chemistry comes first before Biology, for example?

Also, the students may not get to know the topic that well since they are only going to be familiar with them in a span of a quarter.

A 34 second, 7.2 magnitude, intensity 7 earthquake shook the provinces of Cebu and Bohol last Oct 15, 2013. The Armed Forces of The Philippines (AFP) coordinated with the local governments and local disaster management units for updates, checkups on the situation and the damages made.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) released a P10 million budget for the purchase of the survivors’ relief goods and basic necessities. Philippine President Benigno Simeon Aquino III, visited the affected places to check on the victims and the inflicted damages. The said earthquake was so far the deadliest and strongest earthquake that hit the Philippines in 23 years, resulting to a

Super Typhoon Yolanda is the strongest typhoon recorded to hit land. It left the most devastating effect after it landed the Philippines. There were lootings and displacement of people. The entire populace criticized the government and blamed them for their inability to respond immediately. The affected region was washed away and left thousands of people starving, ill, and others, dead.

There are also genetic materials on the lake similar to the ones found on Earth. There is a probability that exotic life-forms not found on Earth could possibly have similarities with the creatures living here on Earth. If further studying was done on the lake, then this could be the explanation of human history and pre-history or the explanation of the existence of astro-biological life-forms. Creatures living in the lake may have a resemblance of present creatures because they maintained their DNA sequences since 15 million years ago, or even explain the possibility of astro-biological life-forms that could have been visiting Earth, but are microscopic, so human society tends to leave them unnoticed. Higgs Boson: The Window to the Atomic Universe and Beyond

It is an elementary particle that conforms to the Bose-Einstein statistics – energy states that are considered quantized and the particles are treated as indistinguishable. It was first theorized by R. Brout, F. Englert, P. Higgs, G.S. Guralnik, C.R. Hagen, and T.W.B. Kibble in 1964 from Scotland’s University of Edinburgh, but is named after Peter Higgs. It has an average lifetime of 1 zeptosecond (10-21s) and is believed to be the fixed piece in the Standard Model, which describes the interactions of all known particles and forces.

The Higgs Boson or Higgs Particle is a proposed elementary particle in the Standard Model of particle physics and is of profound importance in particle physics because it can prove the presence of the Higgs field – the simplest of several proposed explanations for which elementary particles acquire mass by interacting with the Higgs field. Peter Higgs, predicted the massive particle and some of its theoretical properties. It is often referred to as the “the God Particle”, but physicists regarded it as inappropriate because it has nothing to do with God.

Ateneo and Beyond

According to the Standard Model, the Higgs Boson is a particle that has no spin, electrical charge, or color change and these particles tend to exist in the same place at the same quantum state (the state of a quantized system as described by its quantum numbers.) It is an unstable particle that decays almost immediately into other particles. “Higgsless” models would be considered if the Higgs particle did not exist. In the extensions of the Standard Model, there can be multiple Higgs Bosons present.

The Higgs Boson is the long sought particle that is responsible for giving mass to all other subatomic particles. Physicists are also hoping that the Higgs particle would provide the first glimpse of physics beyond the Standard Model which has some inconsistencies and needs revision. The Higgs particle so far proved to be normal with little to no deviation from what was predicted under the Standard Model.

The Higgs field was proved by confirming the Higgs particle and evidence of its properties. The Higgs Boson and the Higgs field will affect human knowledge about the universe and his environment, the validation of the unconfirmed part of the Standard Model, and can indicate which of the current theories on particle physics are accurate. These can broaden the scope of science by discovering “new” physics and beyond. The LHC teams announced that they confirmed the formal discovery of a previously unknown boson, whose behavior so far was in line and “consistent with” a Higgs Boson, while signifying that further data, analysis, and research were needed before clearly identifying the particle as a Higgs Boson. For the non-scientist community that wishes to know what the Higgs Boson is in simpler terms, then a few physicists have defined it for us, including Paul Padley of Rice University, who forms part of the discovery teams. It is a subatomic particle that weighs approximately 130 times as much as a hydrogen atom, which is the lightest gas. It interacts with other subatomic particles which are building blocks of an atom and in such a manner slows them down. It is the reason why matter has mass, since mass has the ability to display the property of Inertia. Physicists also thought that this particle had mass, but scientists need an explanation why matter has mass. It was in 1964 when Peter Higgs of Scotland’s University of Edinburgh and other physicists theorized that maybe Higgs Boson was the particle responsible for mass.

Physicists discovered this by a simulated collision between two protons. It decayed almost immediately into two jets of haelrons and two electrons. Two teams were also responsible in collecting data in separate experiments when they smashed together millions of subatomic particles of protons to see what pieces would result from the process. The particle fell into pieces in ways predicated by Higgs and other physicists. Physicists and CERN chief Rolf Heuer are sure that this is the Higgs Boson because it is “a particle consistent with the Higgs Boson.” They assigned it approximately 0.000 057% statistical chance of the particle detection to be wrong.

PSZCAU MEET 2013: PLAY ON

By Hans Xavier Wong Shortly after the crisis in Zamboanga City, the Private Schools of Zamboanga City Athletic Unit (PSZCAU) held its annual athletic meet. Participants included grade school and high school athletes from various private schools, such as the Ateneo de Zamboanga University, Claret School of Zamboanga, Ferndale School, Bethany School, Filipino Turkish Tolerance School, Pilar College, Good Shepherd School, Immaculate Conception Elementary School, and Zion Evangelical School. Meanwhile, Chong Hua School and St. Joseph High School did not participate in the said athletic meet allegedly due to security concerns. Athletes from the participating schools competed in various sports events, like basketball, chess, football and softball on November 1011, 2013 and table tennis, badminton, sepak takraw, and volleyball on November 15-16, 2013.

Bacatan It has been an annual tradition of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University High School to commemorate the Intramurals, where the students get to play the various popular sports in the school campus like basketball, football, badminton and sepak takraw. It is a fact that most of us like to engage in foreign sports but we hardly play any Filipino game. So, why can’t we also have a Filipino Sports Fest in which we can play our country’s very own games?

During the Buwan ng Wika celebration of the AdZU HS, students played some of the local games like hilaang lubid, the local version of the “tug of war” and the palo sebo. Although the experience of the students was great, many still feel that it wasn’t enough, that we still need to play more of the local games not just for the experience but more importantly, as a way to preserve part of our cultural heritage that is slowly dying.

Many are more familiar with and would prefer the popular western sports like basketball and boxing to any local sport.

Two years ago, the AdZU HS community experienced a successful joint celebration of the Intramurals and Buwan ng Wika. In the said celebration, students played both foreign and Filipino games in the event dubbed as the “Laro ng Lahi.”

The students had so much fun as they skipped, hopped, pulled, climbed poles and most importantly shared laughter with their classmates and friends which they wouldn’t obviously experience in the confines of their homes or in computer shops.

Perhaps it’s high time that we revive those games that have become so much part of our old folks’ childhood days like the patintero, luksonglubid, tumbang preso, and piko.

They say no one is too young or too old for games. So why not give our kids now a chance to experience real play like what the old ones did— Laro ng Lahi, why not?

The events on the first day were the Popular Dance and Pop Singing Competitions, wherein the Freshmen claimed first blood, as they brought home the championship in the Boys division of Pop Singing. The Sophomores also bagged the championship for the Girls division of the Pop Singing and the Popular Dance competition.

During the three-day intramurals, not only students, but even several teachers actively supported

their athletes in various events, by means of chanting out their year levels in the middle of triumphant moments. The Fourth Year won most of the tournaments such as: Volleyball Girls and Boys, Badminton Boys, Football Boys, Sepak Takraw Boys, and Table Tennis Girls. The Grade 8 students, who were second in the standings, took home victory in Badminton Girls, Chess Girls, Table Tennis Boys and Basketball Girls.

The Juniors grab the titles in Chess Girls, Football Girls and Sepak Takraw Girls, Leaving the Freshmen with only one championship that they earned in the first event of the Intramural.

William H. Kreutz Campus. This year was the second consecutive year of the batch 2014 to top the scoreboards.

The Intramurals 2013 opening ceremony was held last July 11. The event started with a parade that was full of bellowing. Banners were raised representing each section in each year level. The Seniors came

Last June, the Miami Heat won and defended their title against the San Antonio Spurs in an epic best-of-7 series. Most students from all year levels in the ADZU High School Community watched the NBA finals, which the Miami eventually won in game 7. The series was full of thrillers – from roaring fans, to amazing dunks, and buzzer-beating three pointers.
