A lawyer and reserve officer in the Philippine army, Duterte has carved out her own political career and, although at times supportive of her father, is considered more levelheaded and pragmatic. Duterte's party originally wanted her to succeed him, but she chose instead to run for vice-president. Movie actor Robin Padilla, who ran for senator, got the highest vote in Sulu with nearly 305,000, and the Kusug Tausug partylist was the top choice in the province with nearly 269,000 votes. Padilla’s win
was largely due to Governor Tan’s endorsement. Governor Tan, a strong political ally of President Rodrigo Duterte, publicly endorsed Marcos and Duterte-Carpio. “Yes, kay BBM at Sara kaming lahat sa Sulu. Tan also rallied allied mayors in Sulu to help him in the campaign. Duterte eventually won by a landslide in Sulu, the only province in the Muslim region where Marcos won. Marcos, a former senator; and Tan, an ex-congressman; are long-time friends and political allies. Sayyaf man transporting explosives killed BASILAN – Police and military remain in alert after an Abu Sayyaf militant transporting explosives and materials for the manufacture of improvised explosive was killed in a firefight with Special Forces soldiers in Isabela City in the Muslim province of Basilan, police said. CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – An environmental group has urged the recycling or safe reusing and repurposing of political campaign materials to conserve resources and minimize the volume of post-election garbage to be disposed of. “Regardless of your poll standing, we appeal to all candidates to exemplify your concern for Mother Earth and for public welfare by finding ways to prevent your publicity materials from ending up in waste dumps and furnaces and, God forbid, the oceans,” said Aileen Lucero, National Coordinator, EcoWaste Coalition. “Dumping and burning campaign materials will be a huge waste of resources, including energy, consumed in making the seemingly incalculable number of posters, leaflets and other popular paraphernalia used for the May 2022 national and local polls. It will further result in environmental pollution,” she added. Lucero said while reusing and repurposing is surely not a perfect solution, especially for campaign materials laden with harmful chemicals, it will no doubt lessen the volume of trash that is collected and hauled to disposal facilities, or get spilled into the natural environment, including water bodies. In addition to decreased garbage volume, she said reusing and repurposing campaign materials will reduce disposal costs, prevent releases of chemical pollutants into the environment, conserve resources and instil environmental awareness and responsibility among the people. She said paper-based campaign materials can be creatively reused or repurposed. For example, sample ballots were turned into instant notepads with the use
of a binding glue, fastener, ribbon or string. Cardboard posters were cut to make bookmarks, envelopes, folders, name plates and other school needs. And polyethylene plastic posters were reused as book and notebook covers, and the sturdier polyvinyl chloride plastic tarpaulin posters were cut and sewn into carry bags of various sizes. “Tarps, as these materials are also called, were also made into useful ball, shoe, shoulder, string, laundry and toiletry bags, as well as waist bags for electricians and janitors. They were also transformed into aprons, letter and tool organizers, and waste sorters,” Lucero said, adding tarps can also be repurposed as awnings or canopies for homes and stores, upholstery material, and as a protective shield against sun and rain for jeepneys, pedicabs and tricycles. However, Lucero advised the public to only reuse or repurpose tarps for non-food and non-child applications as tarps may contain hazardous chemicals, particularly cadmium and phthalates, which
may leach and contaminate the food or expose children to chemical risks. “To make the reusing or repurposing of campaign materials easier, we reiterate our plea to prohibit the use of cadmium, phthalates and other toxic chemical additives in plastics and for the authorities to require the use of recyclable, non-toxic campaign materials in future elections,” she said. Miss Philippines Earth 2021 Naelah Alshorbaji also urged the recycling of the campaign materials – paper or plastic, or tarpaulins – and not to burn them. “Happy or not with the outcome, it remains our responsibility to clean up after ourselves and to do due diligence - recycling and upcycling where possible. Give a second life to durable materials used and responsibly dispose of non-useable items as per your local waste management rules. Farmers benefit from ‘Yellow Corn’ project
Farmer Beneficiaries from the municipality of Baggao, together with officials from the municipal and Cagayan provincial governments, Department of Agriculture and partners, celebrate the success of the “Yellow Corn” project through a harvest festival in Cagayan province, organized by Cargill Philippines and Save the Children Philippines. MANILA – Hundreds of farmer families in Cagayan province have benefitted from the “Yellow Corn” project, a 6-month inclusive business pilot project by Cargill Philippines and Save the Children Philippines. The project was launched in October 2021 and it provided training on good agricultural practices, farming inputs, post-harvest support, and integration of farmers directly into the animal feed value chain. Francis Samilin, a farmer beneficiary partner, shared that the training they received through the Yellow Corn project improved their knowledge and skills in corn farming. “The quality of the produced corn is good. The volume of our harvest increased and our income increased. If this continues, this will help us improve our status in life and the welfare of our children, especially the younger ones, for their education,” Samilin said. Mag-hilamos At Maligo Araw-Araw
The Good Shepherd and The Sacrificial Lamb by Fr. Roy Cimagala (Cebu) IF we are truly to be like Christ, we also have to be a good shepherd to the others as well as a sacrificial lamb for the others. Not only that. We also need to be both a shepherd and a sheep, one that takes care of others as well as one to be taken care of. Finally, we have to form ourselves as one sheepfold of Christ. All these farm or pastoral images in the gospel remind us of these truths of our faith about ourselves in our relation with God and with everybody else. Let’s keep these precious truths vivid in our mind if only to conform our life—our thoughts, words and deeds, our desires and intentions, etc.—to them. Conformed to Christ, we have to be both sheep and shepherd, both to be guided and to guide, following the same process of receiving and giving that characterizes our whole earthly life. As a good shepherd, Christ lays down his life for his sheep. He is willing to be the sacrificial lamb. He contrasts himself to the hireling. The latter “sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees.” As members of the Church founded by Christ, we form one sheepfold whose door is Christ himself. We are a flock taken care of by Christ as the good shepherd, and we also take care of one another. Yes, we are also a shepherd to each other, being so in the name of Christ. We have to understand that we ought to develop a keen sense of the pastoral. We both have to learn and to teach, to be led and to lead, to be offered like the sacrificial lamb and to be the offerer himself.
We have to understand that this sense of the pastoral involves all of us, and not just the priests and bishops. It’s for the clergy, the laity and the religious. We all take part in the continuing mission of Christ and of the Church, which is the salvation of man, though in different ways. As sheep and lamb, we have to try our best to learn everything about our faith and to live it to the full. Christ has given us everything already that we need to know. He has given us all the means we need to be who we ought to be—nothing less than to be “another Christ.” To be very realistic in life, we have to be ready and eager to become a sacrificial lamb. This is not bad news. This is Good News. To be a sacrificial lamb actually has a very wonderful significance. Our Christian faith tells us that given who and what we are, we have been taught right from the beginning of humanity, that we need to offer a sacrifice as a way of expressing and affirming the truth that we come from God and we also belong to him. God, our Father and Creator, has been the one who teaches us about this duty. He has also equipped us in our nature so that we can comply with this duty that only shows the intimate relation we have with God. In short, God, who is love, has been teaching us, who are his image and likeness, how to love. This whole business of offering sacrifices is actually the language of love. It acts out the dynamics of love which is that of mutual self-giving between the lover and the beloved. Each party becomes both lover and beloved in the ideal state of love.

Heaven: The Answer to Life’s Deepest Longing by Engr. Carlos V. Cornejo (Cebu) Heaven is the answer to life’s deepest longing. One of the proofs of the existence of God and heaven using logic or reason is “The Argument from Desire” authored by C.S. Lewis. The argument basically demonstrates that for every natural desire here in this world there is a corresponding satisfaction to it. There is no natural desire that is left hanging so to speak. With hunger there is food, with thirst there is water, with loneliness there is friendship, with hunger for truth there is knowledge. But there exists in us a desire which nothing in time, nothing on earth, no creature can satisfy. Therefore, there must exist something beyond time, earth and creatures, which can satisfy this desire. That something is what we call “God” or “life with God forever” or “heaven”. Obviously, we don’t know what heaven will be like, any more than an unborn baby knows what the world is like outside the womb. Earth is like a gigantic mother’s womb. Thus, when we die, we are born into the next world. St. Paul’s description of heaven when he was given a vision by God was: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived, the things God has prepared for those who love him.” (1 Corinthians 2:9) We can only imagine something in our mind if we have seen it or we have previous knowledge of it beforehand. If we know what a horse and bird is, we can imagine combining the two animals and come up with a winged horse named Pegasus. When St. Paul saw heaven, he could not compare it with something here on earth, so he made that literally indescribable description. It is unknown but precisely it is the essence of heaven: it is something exciting. The greatest joys in life are the pleasant surprises. In one retreat I attended, the priest asked, “What is heaven like?” He then answered his own question, “Think of the things you love most here on earth. Do you like playing basketball? Heaven
is playing basketball forever. Do you like eating ice cream? Heaven is eating ice cream forever with all of your favorite flavors.” Make a list of all the things you really love and heaven is everything in that list and even much more in a new, surprising, and perfected form. But heaven is more than these things, because things do not make us deeply happy, or the happiness they offer is limited. And what makes us deeply happy? Truth and love. The most important thing about heaven is not “what” will be in heaven but “who”; not things but the people. Even here on earth, relationships make us happier than things. The two things that will never make us bored is knowing and loving. Heaven is knowing and loving all the saints and angels there and most importantly knowing and loving an infinite God. Those who search for the truth and do the most acts of love here on earth are the ones destined for heaven. We call them saints. All those who are in heaven are saints and that is why we are all invited to become saints because we are all invited to enter heaven our true home. No one enters heaven unless he or she is a holy person or a saint. “I am the Lord your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy.” (Leviticus 11:44) Heaven is the ultimate reason why God created us, so as to be with Him forever in that place. Thus, we were designed to be unable to find perfect, total happiness in this world, even if we possess the whole world. “For what purpose does it profit to gain the whole world and lose his soul?” (Mk 8:36) Each single human heart is bigger than the whole world. We long for the infinite: infinite truth, infinite goodness (love), and infinite beauty, and we are not totally satisfied with anything less. And only God is infinite truth, infinite goodness and infinite beauty. As Dr. Peter Kreeft would say, “What makes heaven heavenly is not heaven, but God.”

Maligo araw araw. (Iwas sipon, trangkaso, galis at pigsa.) 2. Maghilamos sa umaga at sa gabi. (Para gumanda ang balat at iwas pimples at kuliti.) 3. Mag-sipilyo 2 o 3 beses bawat araw. (Iwas sa sirang ngipin.)
4. Maghugas ng kamay pagkagamit ng banyo, umihi o dumumi. (Iwas sa sore eyes, tuberculosis at pulmonya.) Wala pong excuse na pasmado, pagod, puyat, bagong gising, bagong tulog, may regla, nag-computer, nag-cellphone, nanahi at iba pa. Kahit pa sinabi ni Lola o Nanay. Puwedeng magpahinga ng 15 minutos kung pagod. Pero dapat pa rin maligo at maghilamos araw-araw. Maging malinis sa katawan. Ang sabon at tubig ang iyong proteksyon laban sa sakit. Maghilamos sa Umaga Para Gumanda: Kailangan maghilamos ng mukha sa umaga at bago matulog sa gabi para malinis ang mukha. Hindi po tunay ang kasabihan na masama maghilamos. Maraming naiipon na dumi, muta at bacteria sa mukha. Napaka-oily din ng
mukha sa umaga. Kapag hindi tayo maghihilamos, puwede magkaroon ng pimples, kuliti (impeksyon sa mata), at pamumula ng mata. Ang pag-dami ng Muta ay isang senyales na maraming mikrobyo na ang iyong mata. Ang payo ko: Maghilamos ng mukha sa umaga at sa gabi. Puwede po maghilamos kahit puyat, walang tulog, bagong gising o galing sa pagbabasa sa computer o cellphone. Puwedeng magpahinga ng 15 minutos muna. Pero huwag papasok sa trabaho o matutulog sa gabi nang hindi naghihilamos ng mukha. Walang koneksyon ang paghilamos ng mata sa paningin. Chicken Asado INGREDIENTS : • 3 pounds chicken, cut into serving parts • 1/2 cup calamansi juice • 1/4 cup soy sauce • 1 onion, peeled and sliced thinly • 3 cloves garlic, peeled and minced • 1/4 teaspoon peppercorns, cracked • 1/4 cup canola oil • 2 large potatoes, peeled and sliced into 1/4 inch thickness • 1 cup tomato sauce • 1 cup water • 1 bay leaf • 2 tablespoons liver spread • salt to taste

INSTRUCTIONS : 1. In a bowl, combine chicken, calamansi juice, soy sauce, onions, garlic, and pepper. Massage marinade on meat and marinate for about 20 to 30 minutes. 2. Drain chicken, squeezing meat and aromatics to extract liquid. Reserve marinade. 3. In a skillet or wide pan over medium heat, heat oil. Add potatoes and cook until lightly browned and cooked through. With a slotted spoon, remove from pan and drain on paper towels. Keep warm. 4. Remove excess oil from pan except for about 2 tablespoons. Add chicken, onions, and garlic. Cook, stirring
occasionally until chicken is lightly browned and onions and garlic are softened. Add reserved marinade and bring to a boil for about 2 to 3 minutes. Add tomato sauce, water, and bay leaf. Bring to a boil. Lower heat, cover, and cook for about 30 to 40 minutes or until chicken is cooked through and sauce is reduced. Skim the sauce of rendered fat as needed. Add liver sauce and stir to distribute. Continue to cook for another 1 to 2 minutes or until sauce is thickened. Season with salt to taste. Transfer onto a serving platter and garnish with potatoes. Serve hot.
