Zambo’s Covid-19 cases decline Continued from page 1 infections by the day.

The number of active Covid-19 cases is expected to fall further to single digit as the local government continues its mass vaccination campaign in an effort to inoculate all eligible residents.

But Mayor Beng Climaco reminded residents not to be complacent and always follow the public health protocols – the wearing of face masks in crowded places and frequent washing of hands with soap and water, or sanitizers.

“We are doing everything we can to defeat the Covid-19 as we carefully open up our city to the new normal. Don’t be complacent as the virus continues to mutate,” she told the Zamboanga Post by phone when asked about the local government’s

effort in the fight against the deadly respiratory disease which had killed over 1,200 people here since the pandemic began two years ago.

Climaco said the Covid-19 is still considered a pandemic and residents must do everything to protect themselves from the virus as there have been numerous reports of reinfection among those who recovered from the disease, especially people with comorbidities.

Doctor Mike Ryan, of the World Health Organization, also said controlling the pandemic requires strong control programs to reduce the infections, the suffering and deaths.

“I think we need to be careful here in terms of the word endemic. Yes, endemic means in a sense that the virus is present

and transmitting at lower levels. Usually, with the form of seasonal, transmission or increases that are seasonal or outbreaks on top of an endemic situation. That's very classic for many infectious diseases.

Remember, endemic HIV and endemic tuberculosis and endemic malaria, kill millions of people on this planet,” Ryan said.

“So just changing from pandemic to endemic is just changing the label.

That doesn't change the challenge we face. We need sustained control on this virus. We need sustained protection of our most vulnerable. We need strong Health Systems to deal with those infections we can prevent and we need to be able to continue to do that with the levels of infection we experience,” he added. (Zamboanga Post)

The DOST group informed Tan of its food processing facility project which will benefit the Sulu State College. Agdappa said they have installed and tested the equipment and conducted the technology transfer training for the production of rice mongo curls and rice mongo instant blend dry cereal.

Tan said he appreciates the efforts of the DOST and urged the agency to provide more technological training for Sulu. “Kailangan talaga ang technology. Ma-capacitate ang mga tao natin with the appropriate technology and skills, Tulad ng pag-process ng seafood,” he said,

citing the province’s rich marine resources.

He said Sulu has its own skills training center and benefits small and medium enterprises and residents who wanted to put up their own business.

Tan said any assistance or training modules from the DOST, especially from the Food and Nutrition Research Institute, will greatly help the provincial training center.

The DOST group expressed optimism on the huge prospects of potential industries in Sulu.

In the seaside town of Maimbung, the seat of power of the Sultanate of Sulu, restaurants and cafes have sprouted to accommodate local tourists and visitors. Sulu Rep. Samier Tan even put up a huge drive-in cinema in the town which is now always packed with people.

He also put up a sprawling food center in the white sand Litayon Beach in Patikul town to help residents earn a decent living.

Tan also met separately with officials of the Department of Tourism led by Undersecretary Myra Abubakar who brought with her the DOT regional directors from Mindanao - Crisanta Marlene Rodriguez - Region 9; Marie Elaine Uchuan - Region 10; Tanya Tan - Region 11; Armin Hautea - Region 12; and Nelia Arina - Region 13.

He said the DOT officials conducted tourist site assessment and halal benchmarking in the province in an effort to promote the tourism industry in Sulu, which is dotted with white sand islands and islets and pristine beaches.

Just this month, a documentary team from GMA Television’s Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho went to Sulu and met with Tan for its tourism segment.

The new set of officers were sworn in by Arroyo, who was also former House Speaker and now running unopposed as congresswoman in the 2nd Congressional District of Pampanga which covers six towns.

The names of the new set of officers were not immediately available, but Tambut, who spoke during the event, repeatedly thanked Arroyo and the Pinedas and other provincial and municipal officials, including the huge Muslim communities in Pampanga and Bulacan supporting her partylist.

After the event, Tambut and her husband joined Arroyo in visiting Angeles City and met with Mayor Carmelo Lazatin, Jr. In her Facebook post, Tambut said: “Taos-puso po ang aming pasasalamat kay President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo dahil isinama niya kami sa Pampanga at personal siya nag-ikot at nag-campaign para sa Kusug Tausug Partylist. Maraming salamat po Madam dahil kahit 6:00 a.m. pa lang ay nasa kalsada na tayo at nag-bibiyahe ay sinamahan niyo po kami buong araw para mag-kampanya. Kahit po

kayo ay puyat, pagod at napaka-init ng araw, hindi niyo po kami iniwan at talagang personal niyo po kaming sinamahan umikot sa Pampanga.”

She continued to say: “Hindi po namin alam kung paano namin masusuklian lahat ng kabutihan na binigay ninyo sa amin. Mula po sakin, sa aking pamilya at sa lahat ng bumubuo ng Kusug Tausug Partylist maraming maraming salamat po Madame President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Mabuhay po kayo.

Hanggang ngayon hindi pa rin ako makapaniwala na personal tayo sinamahan ng Presidente ng Pilipinas sa ating kampanya. Napaka swerte naman talaga ng Kusug Tausug Partylist dahil mahal na mahal tayo ni President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Alhamdulillah.”

Tambut, who is seeking re-election in the May polls, was in Pampanga

from March 4-5 and visited the Muslim communities and Muslim religious leaders.

She is the chairperson of the Globalization and WTO in the House of Representative, whose jurisdiction includes all matters directly and principally relating to the effects on various social sectors of World Trade Organization policies and other actions to harness opportunities offered by globalization for economic development.

Tambut is also the vice chairperson on the Committee on Poverty Alleviation and majority member of the committees on Economic Affairs, Foreign Affairs, Muslim Affairs, Trade and Industry, Transportation, and Women and Gender Equality. Hunt continues for Pagadian mosque shooters PAGADIAN CITY – Police continue to hunt four gunmen who barged into a local mosque and shot two worshippers in a daring broad daylight attack recently.

Police said the attack wounded Ustadz Salman Maulana Palwa, 39, and president of the Southeast Asian Development Committee Foundation Inc.; and Edon Abas Palwa, 63.

“Investigation disclosed that prior to the incident, the victims were worshipping inside the mosque when suddenly four unidentified male suspects entered the mosque and shot them,” said Maj. Shellamie

Chang, a regional police spokesperson.

The motive of the attack is still unknown and it was unclear whether it was connected to Palwa’s non-profit foundation.

According to information, the 27-year old foundation assists and provides opportunities to Muslims, who are in dire need of help and support, to elevate them to the high status in the aspects of religious practice, knowledge, character and economic standing to become more productive citizens and God-fearing individuals.

The assailants fled on two motorcycles after

the attack and were being hunted by the police in Pagadian, where gun attacks are not uncommon.

Chang said the victims were rushed to hospital.

Police investigators have recovered a total of 18 bullet casings from .45-caliber pistols used by the gunmen. “Personnel of Pagadian City Police Station conducted a thorough investigation and follow-up operation to identify, locate and arrest the suspects,” Chang said.

Families affected by flash floods get aid

The City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office or CDRRMO said it provided hot meals to the victims through its mobile

kitchen. “Ang atong mobile kitchen, nakahatag tag hot meal nila didto sa mga evacuation center.

Dili man nato ma cover tanan sa mobile kitchen so ga designate lang mi sa City Social Welfare and Development Office og sa DRRM,” said Patirick Nuñez, CDRRMO head.

Nearly 3,500 packed meals were distributed to affected families staying at 12 evacuation centers last week.

Dominguez also refuted claims that suspending the collection of fuel excise tax will help soften the impact of the oil price hike, saying this will instead cause more harm than good. “If we suspend this, and we don’t collect it, what will happen is our debt-to-GDP ratio will go up from an estimated 7.7% to 8.2%.

And it will mean that if we — if we continue to spend the same amount of money, we will have to borrow more money and the amount of — and that will bring up our debt-to-GDP (Gross Domestic Product) ratio by — to about 61.4%,” he said.

According to Dominguez, if the tax on fuel is reduced, it will only benefit the top 10% of income earners in the Philippines,

which consume almost 50% of all the fuel. “In other words, if we — and if we look at the top — bottom 50% of the Philippines, they only consume 13% of the fuel,” he said.

Continuing the collection excise tax on fuel will therefore soften the impact for all sectors, making the measure very equitable for all Filipinos and not the country’s top earners and car owners, he said, adding apart from the poor sector, the excise tax on fuel imposed under Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion Law will also provide the budget for the salaries of state workers and help fund infrastructure developments in the country.

“Tax collections from fuel will provide the budget for target subsidies of 200 per month per household from the lower 50% of the Filipino population or roughly 12 million individuals, amounting to 33.1 billion per year,” Dominguez said.

National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Director General and Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Karl Kendrick Chua also agreed with Dominguez and even recommended three measures to curb the effects of inflation providing targeted relief to vulnerable sectors, doing unconditional cash transfer, and promoting energy conservation through the implementation of 10hour, four-day work week.

He said shortening the regular work week to just four days would reduce work commute and help the government manage the economy, adding a similar measure was also implemented in 2008 in a bid to cushion the impact of rising fuel prices.

Under NEDA’s proposal, public utility vehicle drivers will receive service contracting subsidies of at least P6,500 per month for two months.

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana dismissed Parlade’s call for a revolutionary government and ordered the military to ignore the former commander. “Retired General Antonio Parlade’s call for a revolutionary government is part of his guaranteed freedom of speech and expression,” he said, adding “the retired general’s call is better left ignored.”

Eduardo Año was quick to denounce Parlade’s antics, calling it “reckless and careless,” especially at this time when the country will soon hold elections.

“While we respect Parlade’s right to free speech, we urge him - as a former military general who has sworn to uphold the Constitution - to respect duly constituted authorities, be more responsible and circumspect in airing his personal remarks, and to seek the proper legal mechanisms to address his concerns,” Año said.

Año said all government agencies under him - the Bureau of Fire Protection, and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology - and the Philippine National Police, shall remain committed and loyal to the Consti-

tution and the chain of command. “And will carry out our mandate to ensure peaceful and orderly communities during the election period. As Deputies of the COMELEC, we shall, above all, safeguard the sanctity of the ballot,” he said.

He also urged all local governments to dismiss Parlade's statement and stay the course of delivering public service that addresses the needs of your jurisdiction even in the middle of a highly political climate. “Together with the Department of National Defense, the DILG shall focus on the most pressing issues of our country and guarantee the peaceful transition of power and authority to the new set of leaders who shall assume office on June 30, 2022,” Año said.

Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union and Pangasinan; Region II: Batanes, Cagayan, City of Santiago, Isabela and Quirino; Region III: Angeles City, Aurora, Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Olongapo City, Pampanga, Tarlac and Zambales; Region IVA: Batangas, Cavite, Laguna and Lucena City; Region IV-B: Marinduque, Puerto Princesa City and Romblon; and Region V: Naga City and Catanduanes.

And for the Visayas:

Region VI: Aklan, Bacolod City, Capiz, Guimaras and Iloilo City; Region VII: Cebu City and Siquijor; and Region VIII: Biliran, Ormoc City and Tacloban City.

Don’t Let Failure Have the Last Say

by Engr. Carlos V. Cornejo (Cebu) AN INSPIRATIONAL speaker began his seminar by holding up a twenty-dollar bill. He asked the two hundred people in the room, “Who would like this twenty-dollar bill? Hands started going up.

“I am going to give this twenty-dollars to one of you”, he said. “But first, let me do this,” and he proceeded to crumple the bill. He then asked, “Who still wants it?” Still hands were in the air. “Well,” he continued, “what if I do this?” And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it on the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now crumpled and dirty.

“Now who still wants it?” Still hands went into the air. “My friends, you have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth twenty dollars.”

We all should be like the twenty-dollar bill. Many times, in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, we will never lose our value. This never say die spirit is important because study shows that those who easily give up with life’s struggles are those who make one or two failures with their goals in life and right away conclude that they are useless. They feel that they don’t have “the right stuff” or they simply are not good enough. It’s a wrong mindset. If it’s a wrong mindset then it can be corrected. Only talent has a limit but attitude and mindset can always change and grow.

We all make mistakes. It took me some time to learn this reality. But after grasping that mistakes will always be our lot, especially when you are trying to do a number of things, it now has become a good teacher and companion. One great lesson I’ve learned from failure is that it is just part of the process that leads you to success. Before you can graduate you need to fail

in some exams first. Before you succeed in a particular business, you will have to fail trying out different business ventures first. Failures are just stepping stones. The trick in overcoming failures is not to give up. You might fail quite a number of times with some subjects in college but come graduation time all of those failures are forgotten. Success will have the last say. Reminds me of death. When we die many would say, death will always have the last say. That death will always win over us no matter how we have lived our life. I beg to disagree. Our Lord Jesus Christ has changed all that. Resurrection will have the last say if we have lived a God-guided life.

That’s why I always love redemption stories. Whenever I hear or read athletes or movie personalities who have had some big failures in their lives, even those that are so scandalous, but later on were remorseful, apologized to whomever they have hurt and have learned from their past, these flawed people are still good role models for us.

Why? Because in one way or another, we are all redemption stories. We all make mistakes and have to get back on our feet. Unless of course we have not learned from our failures and are still busy doing it. But no matter how bad we have failed in the past, all of that can be corrected by a thing called forgiveness. Forgive yourself and ask for forgiveness from God and to those who have been hurt by your failures (parents, siblings, friends, etc.) and begin again. While there’s life there’s hope.

We can always begin again no matter how bad we have fallen and whatever is the situation after we have fallen. Don’t mend a mistake by another mistake.

If you don’t learn from your mistakes, things will get worse and may seem hopeless when there is no such a thing.

We all can have a happy ending by doing the right thing. Just don’t let failure have the last say. (Carlos Cornejo)

INGREDIENTS : • 8 ounces boneless chicken breast • 5 ounces sotanghon noodles • 1 Knorr Chicken Cube • 6 ounces green papaya sliced • 1 cup malunggay leaves • 4 cloves garlic chopped • 1 onion chopped • 3 thumbs ginger minced • 2 tablespoons cooking oil • 6 cups rice wash hugas bigas • Patis and ground black pepper to taste INSTRUCTIONS : 1.

Saute garlic, onion, and ginger.

Add chicken once the onion softens. Cook until the outer layer of the chicken turns light brown.

Pour water. Let boil. Add Knorr Chicken Cube. Cover the pot and boil in low to medium heat for 15 minutes.

Add papaya and sotanghon. Cook for 5 minutes.

Add malunggay leaves.

Season with ground black pepper

Tubig Ang Lunas Sa Sakit Mo Ni Dr. Willie Ong

Mag-ingat sa maduduming water o contaminated water. Puwede itong makamatay. Kapag madumi ang tubig na nainom mo, puwede kang magka-typhoid, diarrhea at hepatitis A. Delikado ang mga sakit na ito. Huwag makipagsapalaran at baka tayo ma-ospital. Alam kong medyo mahal, pero uminom ng bottled water o purified water lamang.

Ano ang mga klase ng tubig?

1. Tubig sa poso o spring – Ang tubig na galing dito ay nakatago sa ilalim ng bato at lupa.

Dahil dito, may halo itong minerals tulad ng calcium at magnesium.

Okay lang ito kung malinis ang pinanggalingan.

2. Mineral water – Nakabote itong tubig pero galing din sa poso o spring water. May minerals ito tulad ng calcium at magnesium na mabuti naman sa katawan.

Pero dapat mag-ingat lang ang mga may sakit sa bato (kidney stones).

3. Distilled water – Kapag distilled water, mababa na ito sa minerals. Ligtas ito at paborito kong inumin.

4. Purified water – Ang ibig lang sabihin ay dumaan ang tubig sa isang purifier o pansala. Basta malinis ang mga tubig, puwede naman inumin.

Paano ang tamang pag-inom ng tubig?

Kailangan ng katawan ang 8 hanggang 12 basong tubig sa maghapon.

Sa mga kababaihan, wala pong tawad! Dahil kung hindi ay baka kumulubot ang iyong kutis at mukha.

Panlaban sa wrinkles ang pag-inom ng sapat na tubig.

Nililinis din ng tubig ang mga dumi natin sa katawan. Makaiiwas tayo sa pagkakaroon ng sakit sa bato at impeksiyon sa kidney. Nakababawas din ng pangangasim ng iyong sikmura kung regular ang pag-inom mo.

Kapag kulang ka sa tubig, mahihirapan ang iyong utak at hindi ka gaanong makakaisip.

Baka ma-dehydrate ka, lalo na sobrang init sa Pilipinas.

Kapag nanunuyo ang iyong mata, lalamunan o ilong, huwag bumili agad ng gamot. Uminon muna ng maraming tubig.

Tandaan, uminom ng tubig kahit hindi ka nauuhaw. Ang mga may edad ay hindi gaanong nakararamdam ng uhaw, kaya painumin sila ng tubig.

Tubig lang ang pinaka-healthy sa lahat. Huwag uminom ng soft drinks, iced tea, alak at kape. Lalo ka lang mauuhaw sa mga iyan.

Isang paalala lang: Sa mga may altapresyon at sakit sa puso, magtanong muna sa inyong doktor bago uminom ng maraming tubig.

Huwag magreklamo kung ihi kayo ng ihi.

Isipin lang na nailalabas mo ang mga dumi sa iyong katawan. Masama po ang magpigil ng ihi dahil baka magka-impeksyon ka. Tubig lang ang sadyang sagot sa karamdaman mo. Good luck po.

Gamallo said the high price of diesel is due to the higher demand as compared to gasoline. He said oil companies in the country are experiencing a tight supply of diesel due to the continuing sanctions on some countries in South America and the Middle East, and the war between Russia and Ukraine that affect suppliers from Asia.

Although the Philippines is not directly importing crude oil from Russia, Gamallo said such countries have been the source of suppliers from South Korea, Japan, and China that export their petroleum and petroleum products to the country.

The Fiscal Incentives Review Board (FIRB) has approved the tax incentives for the operations of the proposed P1.5-billion Cebu City-based shipping vessel, specializing in rollon roll-off (RoRo) passenger and cargo operations.

The grant includes four years of income tax holiday, five years of enhanced deductions, and 11 years of duty exemption on importations.

The new shipping vessel sails the Cebu-Cagayan de Oro City route on a reduced travel time and still comparable rate, setting itself apart in the market as a convenient, cost-friendly, and competitive inter-island vessel in the country.

Finance Secretary and FIRB chairman Carlos Dominguez III said the tax incentive approval for the transportation player aligns with the national government’s aim to modernize transportation and to increase competition in the shipping industry.
