UKI Architects, Helsinki, Finland

At UKI Architects, I worked on the Jorvi Hospital design and the Malmi Hospital design competition. During my employment, I learned a great deal about the challenges of hospital design and the unique approaches involved in a large-scale alliance project. I was given considerable responsibility and received positive feedback for my dedicated work in both projects.

UINU The Museum of History and Future

Turku, Finland

MIMOSA ARONEN & GRACE HERMEZ

HANSA-AUKIO
OLDE-AUKIO

Uinu drifts in the realm of rich history and an unknown future.

The museum building is a sculptural mass with two floors, rising gracefully from the edge of Turku’s harbor like the sails of a ship. The harbor area of Turku holds a rich history of ships and trade. The core idea of the design is to bring history into the area through symbolic elements in a modern yet respectful manner.

The building connects to the site with four corners that align with the surrounding structures. It is positioned on the plot to create comfortably scaled open spaces to the west and east.

There are two main entrances to the building, connected by a boulevard-like lobby space. The concept of the lobby is to create a seamless flow between the outdoors and indoors, allowing for permeability through the building and enhancing the breathability of the harbor area.

The building’s openings are formed by a gradient of bracing, which occasionally tightens and at other times loosens, opening views towards the sea, the river, and the park. The façades feature gently sloping roof shapes that provide multiple perspectives of Turku Castle and the sea from various angles.

My thesis titled ”Nova” is a dream utopia for an ice hall that resonates with the architecture of the world’s most beautiful sport. This design-based work primarily explores the unique architectural requirements of figure skating. I aim to create a space that not only meets the technical needs of skaters but also offers an inspiring environment that honors the beauty and elegance of the sport. ”Nova” comes from the Latin word meaning ”bright star.” The goal of my design work is to create a thoughtfully designed ice hall where everyone has the opportunity to become a star in their sport.

The design of the Nova Ice Hall is based on three sections, with the competition and practice halls located at the outermost ends. In the center of these halls are the warm-up and technical facilities for users. The central section consists of three floors, two of which are connected by a cross-shaped corridor system. This cross corridor minimizes the number of corridors relative to the large hall. The narrow shape of the central section allows for views into the ice halls from nearly all necessary rooms.

The structure of Nova is predominantly made of wood. I wanted to design the load-bearing structures using large laminated timber beams, which are supported by inconspicuous finger-joint connections to laminated timber mast columns. The columns are arranged in rows along the eastern and western walls of the ice hall, as well as the long sides of the central section, with a 500mm span between them. The roof line of the building runs transversely across the hall, creating an interesting spatial atmosphere with the sloping beams.

Zoning Planning

Residential Planning

Building Code

Vihiluoto is an area characterized by a diverse and small-scale built environment, which I emphasized in my zoning planning course project. The sightlines towards the sea were important when planning the locations and orientations of the buildings. The area’s natural environment inspired me greatly, leading me to leave certain areas largely untouched, particularly near the Natura sites and bodies of water. The park bordered by buildings and the sports areas enhance activities for the residents. The boatway adds a maritime atmosphere for both hotel guests and the residents of Vihiluoto.

In the residential planning and building code courses, I designed a wooden apartment building for the zoning planning course area. The somber building’s apartments offer views in every direction. The apartment building includes one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom units. Additionally, the first floor features a shared sauna, laundry room, drying room, and an accessible apartment. The yard of the property serves as an active meeting place for the residents of the apartment building.

VIISTO KIRJASTO TUIRA, OULU

Bachelor’s thesis in architecture: VIISTO Library

Oulu, Finland

The goal of the library designed for the Tuiran waterfront is to provide open and barrier-free access for everyone. The architectural language of the library aims to be well-controlled and minimalist when viewed from the main entrance. This creates a surprising and grand spatial experience in the main area of the library. The library’s form rises to a great height, attracting attention from views across the river and the Merikoski Bridge. The material palette of the library consists of spruce paneling and pre-patinated copper. The color scheme of the library reflects the lush Tuiran area, creating harmony between the built environment and nature. On the courtyard side of the building, a large amphitheater-like staircase and terrace platform have been designed, allowing for various activities to be organized for the public.

ATMOS Cultural center and museum Jyväskylä, Finland

MIMOSA ARONEN & GRACE HERMEZ

In our design work, we focused on planning a cultural center in the center of Jyväskylä.

The concept of the design is formed by the building’s environment, the area’s history, and how we as designers want people to experience the space as they step inside. ”Atmosphere” is the key word upon which our plan is based. For this reason, we named the building Atmos. We wanted the cultural center to create its own unique identity while also forming human-scaled spaces and areas between the surrounding buildings. The varying scales evoke inspiring architecture and enhance the spatial experience in the currently very quiet market area.

Atmos consists of a total of four floors, in addition to which we designed a basement level (-1) for service and loading areas. The ground floor (0) features the center’s lobby spaces, a café, a restaurant, a theater, a lounge area, retail spaces, and technical facilities. The first floor houses a library along with various office and educational spaces. This floor also includes a small café. The second and third floors contain the museum spaces of the building, with the exhibition area on the second floor culminating in a high space.

Oulu, Finland

MIMOSA ARONEN & SILJA SUITIALA

In the course on modern wooden buildings, we designed a wooden daycare center for the Vaakuunakylä housing exhibition area in Oulu.

For the form language, we aimed for a structure that was both winding and cohesive. Gradually, the building mass began to resemble a dragon, which is why we named the daycare Puff, inspired by a Finnish children’s song we sang in daycare when we were little as well.

Our architectural goal was to emphasize uniformity, with ribbon-like window lines and a high front surface. We chose Siberian larch as the facade material, which grays with age.

Inside, we wanted the CLT structures to remain visible. The common areas in the center of the building are structured with a column-beam system, while the individual rooms are constructed with rib slabs. We aimed to bring in a lot of light through large window surfaces and atrium courtyards.

The common areas of the daycare are located in the center of the building, allowing for short distances from each group room.

”Puff tuo lohikäärme niin iloinen,

kai eksyi kerran kaupunkiin, oli sumu hirmuinen.

Puff ei lentää voinut niin löysi sen, tuo pihan poika pikkuinen.”

Graphic design competition - Paimio Sanatorium 90 VALON AALTO (=The wave of light)

VALON AALTO

The Paimio Sanatorium Foundation and Grafia ry organized an international poster competition in collaboration with Finnish Design Shop and so_helsinki. Participants were invited to interpret Alvar and Aino Aalto’s vision of the relationship between humans and their environment, architecture, and design. A total of 444 entries from Finland and around the world were submitted to the international poster competition.

The Human Perspective exhibition was part of the Paimio Sanatorium’s Summer 2023 program. In addition to the awarded works, the exhibition featured 24 posters selected by the competition jury, including my poster, VALON AALTO.

Valon Aalto poster represent Alvar and Aino Aalto`s architectural design of one of the most internationally recognised Finnish buildings. Poster portrays Paimion Parantola from a human perspective by illustrating a view of the balcony area. The poster presents how the organic wave-like shapes of the mass meet the functionality and simple design choices.

Colours of the poster are inspired by the vibrant color palette of the building’s details. Yellow hues are based on the stairs and surfaces of the interior design. The colour yellow brings fesitivity and resembles hope in the form of sunlight reflecting from the white surfaces of the building. The blue tint of the sky encapsuletes the colour of certain important interior details. Finally, the reddish orange colour of the finely detailed balcony railing originating from the actual railing brings contrast to the poster.
