Dear Readers,

Mimi Zelman Publisher

I hope you are all enjoying our beautiful summer weather! Be careful when you are outside by wearing plenty of sunscreen and drinks lots of water!

As many of you know, I have been in the adverting industry for a long time, and always try to educate small businesses on the best way to advertise, whether they are a client of ours or not. I came across this small article and want to share it with you.

An Advertising Pitfall to Avoid: One and Done Advertising. Building awareness for your company takes time, especially in a cluttered marketplace. Frequency is your friend. Running one ad will not drive sustained business results. Effective advertising requires commitment and often the use of multiple media channels working together to amplify your message. Whether monthly or weekly, consider frequency as a core part of your advertising strategy. Please keep this in mind when you’re planning your marketing strategy and please contact me if I can be of assistance. Mimi

How did you get star ted in this business? Three years ago, a former colleague and friend, called and asked me two questions that I didn’t realize until later would have such a profound effect on my future: First, are you happy with the results of your current skincare? And second, where would you be today if you had partnered with the doctors that created ProactivŽ from the beginning? I had battled with acne for over three decades and nothing had ever Connect And Grow With Women In Our Community

worked on my problematic skin. No drugstore brand, department store, specialty retailer, spa, or dermatologist had ever completely cleared my skin concerns. It didn’t matter how much I spent or what they told me to do, nothing seemed to really work. I became even more frustrated with my skin, as my 40+ year-old was experiencing the double whammy of acne and the dreaded signs of aging (lines, wrinkles, larger pores, sun damage, and dullness). I truly felt like I was doomed and it seemed all down hill from here.

Yet, it was the second, more business-minded question that intrigued me the most. I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit, so I quickly recognized the unique opportunity that she was describing with this new venture that the doctors were offering to independent business owners. So, I jumped in with both feet and didn’t look back. What is your background-what were you doing before this business? I had a ver y successful profession level in sales, marketing and brand management for the majority of my career across several diverse industries. What is a good early story about your business? I had a friend who had a lot of exposure to the sun and environment over the years, which left her with visible sun damage. I didn’t know this at first because we had not seen each other in several years since we now lived across the country for each other. Yet, after taking her through a quick online tool developed by Dr. K atie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields, they experts recommended the REVERSE regimen for her daily skincare routine through this online tool. Her REVERSE regimen cleans the slate and helps to erase the appearance of premature aging, including brown spots,

dullness and discoloration. I encourage ever y new customer to take a before picture, so they can use the pictures as their baseline going forward. It’s like with weight gain and loss, you don’t notice the dayto-day until you look back at pictures and you say, Oh my goodness! I want everyone to compare at 30-6090-180 and 360 days of using the Rodan + Fields products. While we were on the phone catching up, she placed her online order. In less then a month, she had friends complementing and noticing an improvement in her complexion. She was so astonished and delighted with the change in her skin; she called me through elated tears thanking me. She expressed in her forty years on the planet, no one had ever complimented her on her skin. She became part of my team as an independent consultant on our second phone call in years. I remember her saying, all she had to do is wash her face and her face would recommend the products for her. I love that my business is truly about changing skin and changing lives, as she has been evident of that accomplishment from the beginning. What is unusual or unique about your business, in comparison to yo u r co m p e t i to r s o r s i m i l a r businesses? First of all, everyone has skin and we are all aging all of the time. So www.womenwithknowhow.com JULY 2014

7

it appears that my entire demo graphic is anyone over the age of 18 with skin. That is a lot of opportunity! I don’t have any friends that aren’t concerned with how they are going to look in 5 years from now. Treatment products are consumable, used twice daily it creates residual income. Second, my business works because the products work. It’s that simple. The products are award winning and they are clinically proven to change skin. Pretty powerful statements; however, The Today Show, Ellen DeGeneres, Oprah and I think the most jaded people on the planet (magazine beauty editors!), all agree. Rodan + Fields has millions of free PR media impressions every year. This allows me to utilize Dr. Rodan and Dr. Fields media coverage without having to pay for any advertising or marketing. Third, there is no other opportunity out there that allows you to ride on the coat tails of such an established, global, and debt-free brand. Next, this business allows me to conduct business anywhere, anytime as everything it’s all managed online from customer sales, to team training, to consultant and customer support. I simply talk to people, the same thing each of us do everyday when you tell your friends/family about a great restaurant or movie you love. And most importantly, I wanted a business I could trust, and there is not really a company out there like Rodan 8

Connect And Grow With Women In Our Community

+ Fields because the doctors that created it also make the formulas and oversee the clinical trails. They also take time to recognize inde pendent consultants like me. Their integrity is beyond reproach and they are considered the dermatological dream team not just in the US, but also throughout the world. That was really important to me and represented a unique opportunity that I couldn’t pass up. Is there a customer experience you are most proud of? A new customer asked me to get rid of her “waddle”. Your what, I asked. I was embarrassed that I didn’t have any idea what she was talking about. Through our conversation, I realized she was describing her turkey neck. She had been contemplating surgery for the past decade so she had set the bar high. Through our online tool, the doctors recommended the REDEFINE regimen with the AMP MD for a firmer, more youthful appearance. The AMP MD Micro-Exfoliating Roller utilizes micro-exfoliation to improve the tone and texture of the complexion as skin responds to the contact of the micro-nee dle tips. When used nightly with the REDEFINE Regimen and Night Renewing Serum, the result is firmer, younger-looking skin. I am happy to report that after twelve months of using the REDEFINE AMP it Up Special, she is still surgery free even

and is very happy with the progress of her smoother, firmer, and less noticeable “waddle”. Do you do any charity or non profit work? When people feel good about the way they look, the b e n e f i t s o f gre ate r s e l f - e s teem can really make a difference in their lives. But we also know that, for people whose very existence is at risk, needs are much more fundamental and inordinately more critical than treating ever yday sk in concerns. That ’s why Rodan + Fields created the Rodan + Fields Prescription for Change (PFC) Foundation which seeks to create opportunities to help more people find the support they urgently need. I donate my personal resources to help aid this essential cause. This past quar ter, our corporate team recognized me as one of the generous supporters of the PFC Foundation. What are some of your greatest challenges in your business? Most people want imme diate gratification, and that goes for new business ventures as well. There are not a lot of is get-rich- quick oppor tunities that are either legitimate or sustainable, yet people still

want it to be so. Most things in life take energy, time and effort. People get impatient in this industry. Many people quit within two years. This channel takes three to five years to start to reach your potential, so you have to give it the patience and commitment. There are not many opportunities where you can condense a 30-50 year career into 3-5 years while working part-time hours. Wh at wo u l d yo u m o s t l i ke t h e reader to know about your journey in business? I first became a consultant because I was motivated by money. My focus has now shifted to helping other people create opportunities that can change their life and in doing so, I’ve personally become more successful. If making a difference inspires you or someone that you k now, then you should look at my Rodan + Fields business oppor tunity ; from great look ing skin, delivered through a scientifically validated and award winning product lines, to earning supplemental income; to spending more time with your family, to being more secure in your future. Rodan + Fields, represents the opportunity for life changing results and I’m evidence of that! Holly Schoolmeester Phone: 704-936-6602 Email: hollyschoolmeester@gmail.com

What is a

Collaborative Divorce &

By Leigh Sellers

How Can it Save Me Money? A collaborative law divorce is a relatively unknown process that has gained significant popularity in many states across the country. Collaborative divorce attorneys are trained in the collaborative process and must maintain proficiency by periodic trainings. The approach is not the same as a traditional adversarial proceeding. For as long as divorce has existed, many people have felt that the process of divorce is destructive and ill-suited for people who must remain in contact with one another to raise children or who have a very complicated situation that does not translate well into the framework of a courtroom. For people wishing to seek a less hostile divorce, or deal with sensitive issues, the collaborative process may be the answer. In a collaborative divorce, the husband and wife each have their own collaborative law attorney to ensure each side is represented and knowledgeable about the legal aspects of the issues. But, unlike a traditional divorce that involves court filings which take extreme positions and list grievances, a collaborative divorce works by direct and open communication between husbands and wives. Further, in a court proceeding, there is a very cumbersome and expensive Connect And Grow With Women In Our Community

process by which attorneys collect documentation and information to establish their case. In Collaborative Law, attorneys and parties engage in an open exchange of ideas and information needed to resolve the matters. In a collaborative divorce, husbands and wives meet together with their attorneys to collectively discuss issues of dispute with a goal of problem solving. To foster open disclosure and communication, and to avoid threats of litigation, both spouses are required to sign an agreement stating their intention to resolve all matters without going to trial. If either spouse decides to take his or her case to court, each of the two attorneys must withdraw from further representation of the parties. As a result, the threat of trial is minimized and parties are dedicated to resolving disputes through mutual agreement. So how does this save money? The most expensive part of litigation is the cost of preparing specialized documents that must conform to a set of procedural and evidentiary rules. The formal documents take time and in the legal world, time is money. In litigation, there are also certain time lines set by law that will control the speed of certain steps of the process.

These timelines can drag the process out much longer than needed, and that means neither party is going to have their financial needs met timely or have a resolution needed on their personal timeline. Litigation also requires court appearances. The court sets these court dates with no regard to the participant’s obligations. So court dates can cost you time away from work. Further, the caseload of a busy county, like Mecklenburg, means that more cases are scheduled that the Court has time for on the given date. So, your attorney might prepare for the case, and if there is no time, they have to refresh and prepare the next time it is scheduled. This costs the parties more money in attorney fees. Another cost of litigation comes by way of enforcing the order that a Judge ultimately enters. No court order is perfect and I have never met anyone who is 100% satisfied with the result. People are simply more compliant with a solution they had a part in crafting. There are far fewer problems with agreements or consent orders that are reached as a result of collaborative work as opposed to solutions imposed on them. There is a non-monetary cost to litigation, too. There is no more destructive force on a family or relationships that contested litigation. People suffer from stress. Parties who are making decisions for the sole purpose of producing an outcome in court are not truly living their life. Going through litigation is like being held captive. Nothing you do, say, spend or make, belongs to

you alone anymore. Nothing is private. Nothing is above disclosure. Divorce and separation is painful and stressful enough without choosing the most destructive legal process available. For more information, visit the Collaborative Divorce website, mecklenburgcollaborative.org. To see if Collaborative Divorce is right for you, contact a trained collaborative lawyer and discuss your situation. (people at barbeque) Photo courtesy of Getty Images

Make Summer Sizzle with Grilled Kabobs -

Fresh, Flavorful Recipes Featuring Onions

20

Connect And Grow With Women In Our Community

Kabobs are a simple way to enjoy many of your favorite fresh flavors in a single meal. With their easy preparation and quick cooking time, kabobs make a perfect weeknight meal when served over rice along with a crisp salad. The potential combinations of meat, vegetables and fruit on a kabob are nearly endless. Spring/ summer varieties of onions are especially well-suited for kabobs. Their flavor ranges from sweet and mild to slightly pungent. Easily identifiable by their tissue thin skin, spring/ summer onions are higher in water content, which gives them a tender crisp texture when grilled. Kitchen tips For the best results, follow these tips from the National Onion Association:

1. Chill onions at least 30 minutes before cutting, and use a sharp knife to reduce tearing. 2. Soak onions in ice water overnight to dampen their flavor, yet keep their crisp, juicy texture. 3. Cut onions can be refrigerated up to 7 days in sealed containers. Simple and satisfying Before you begin experimenting with k abob combinations of your own, try this deliciously simple recipe, which melds chicken and shrimp with two colors of onion, bell pepper and mango for a sweet and savory main dish. Remember to cut ingredients into uniform pieces and leave space between each piece to ensure your kabobs cook evenly and thoroughly. Find additional recipes at www.onions-usa.org.

Sweet ’n Savory Teriyaki Kabobs Makes 4 to 6 servings

Ingredients: 3/4 lb. boneless, skinless chicken breast (1-1/2” to 2” cubes) 18 medium shrimp, shelled and deveined (1/2 to 3/4 lb.) 1/2 C. olive oil 1/2 C. prepared mango chutney, chopped if coarse) ( 1/2 C. bottled teriyaki sauce 2 Tbs. balsamic vinegar

18 12” long bamboo/metal skewers 1 med. yellow onion, (1/2” wedges) 1 med. red onion (1/2” wedges) 2 firm, ripe mangos, peeled, pitted and cut into large cubes 1large green bell pepper, halved, trimmed, seeded and cubed Nonstick cooking spray, as needed Ginger Mango Dipping Sauce (recipe follows) www.womenwithknowhow.com JULY 2014

Place chicken and shrimp in shallow glass pan or large re-sealable plastic bag. For marinade, combine oil, chutney, teriyaki sauce and vinegar in small bowl with lid. Pour half of marinade mixture over chicken and shrimp. Cover or seal and marinate in refrigerator at least 3 hours, preferably overnight. Cover and refrigerate remaining marinade for basting. If using bamboo skewers, soak in water at least l hour before using. To prepare kabobs: Drain and discard marinade from meat. Thread chicken, yellow and red onion, mango, green pepper and shrimp alternately onto skewers. Be sure to keep enough room at one end of each skewer for a “handle. Coat grill grate with nonstick cooking spray. Place skewers over medium coals, and grill for 12 to 15 minutes or until meat is done and vegetables are tender. Brush often with reserved marinade and turn skewers until cooked through. If needed, use spatula to gently loosen skewers before turning as they may stick. Arrange skewers on a platter and serve with Ginger Mango Dipping Sauce.

Ginger Mango Dipping Sauce

• Makes about 1 cup

l mango - halved, pitted & scooped out of skin (about 1 C.) 1/4 C. froz orange juice concentrate 2 tsp. grated fresh ginger root (or 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger) Combine ingredients in electric blender and puree until smooth. Alternate preparations: Omit shrimp and use 1 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breast, cutting into 36 cubes and using 2 per skewer. Instead of grilling, place kabobs in broiler pan coated with nonstick cooking spray and broil 3 inches from heat about 10 to 15 minutes or until done, basting and turning as needed. 22

Make Summer Fitness Fun! For most people, there is typically one main motivator for wanting to get in shape for the warmer weather months — they want to fit into the smaller, more revealing clothing of the season. Whether it’s a new swimsuit they’d like to purchase in a smaller size or they just want last year’s shorts to fit more comfortably, getting a beach-ready body can often seem unattainable. But summer boasts an abundance of outdoor activities that take away the “chore” of getting in shape. Focus on the fun of the season, and before you know it, you will be fitting into your favorite summer wardrobe staples. “Now that the weather is warmer, people are outside training more,” said KT Tape Founder Jim Jenson. “It is important to have the proper training gear and equipment to avoid injury.”

Go take a hike Nothing allows you to take in the peace and tranquility of nature more than a long hike. This summer, incorporate many long hikes into your weekly routine and build up your endurance with this beneficial cardio exercise.

24

Connect And Grow With Women In Our Community

Check with your county and state parks for trails and expand on your hiking skills, advancing in difficulty levels and length as the season progresses. What it works: Hiking engages the quadriceps, hamstrings, calves and gluts. This activity also strengthens your abdominal core, especially while carrying a heavy pack.

Break a sweat, courtside All you need to increase your heart rate is a basketball and an empty court at the local park or school playground. Practice shooting, normal dribbling, dribbling while doing sit-ups and dribbling behind the back of your legs. Make it a weekly event to gather for a game with friends and you’ll forget you are even working out. What it works: Basketball can be a full-body workout, but it mainly targets your triceps, shoulders, biceps and pectoral muscles.

Go for a swim While the summer days often bring about occasions to relax by the pool, there’s no reason not to jump right in.

Take refuge from the sun’s heat and burn calories at the same time by swimming. This exercise is a top choice for those with physical limitations or who find simple cardio activities - such as walking, hiking or jogging - difficult or painful. What it works: Swimming works all major muscles groups, especially the shoulders, abdominals, legs, hips and back. When the weather warms up and spending hours at the gym sounds less appealing, give a few of these fun activities a try. For more fitness tips, visit www.elivingtoday.com.

Take care of your muscles By engaging in a workout routine, you’ve already proven that you care for your body.

www.womenwithknowhow.com JULY 2014

25

But do you have a care plan for the muscles that take you to your next level of fitness? Here are some ways to keep those hard working muscles in top shape so you can give it your all at every workout.

Warm up and cool down Regardless of the sport or activity you pursue, it ’s always best to ease into it slowly and build your endurance as you go. Warming up can include light jogging, walking or performing the activity at a very slow pace. At the end of your routine, be sure to lightly stretch out each major muscle group you worked. Have a backup plan In case of injury, always have a reliable pain relief and support product on hand, such as KT Tape, an elastic sports and fitness tape designed for muscle, ligament and tendon pain relief and support. It’s lightweight, comfortable to wear and can be used on many common injuries, such as lower b ack pai n, k nee pain, s hi n splints and tennis elbow. For more information, visit www.kttape.com. Listen to your body If you should experience any sharp or sudden pains while exercising, don’t ignore the warning signs. Working out through the pain may make a small injury much worse. As a general rule, if it feels wrong, stop the workout. Engage in various activities A body involved in different exercises 26

Connect And Grow With Women In Our Community

will call on different muscle groups. This type of cross training prevents overly stressing one area of muscle.

Allow the body to rest In order to achieve the maximum benefit of your workout, your muscles need proper nourishment. This means sleep is ex tremely impor tant, but it also means resting for a few days in between workouts. A proper rest period will give muscles time to heal. Today’s trends in fitness For those who long for a little variety in their fitness routine, here are some new trends taking shape — for indoors and outdoors — that may be just what you need to take your fitness to the next level. Body weight training This new trend in fitness works by using your own body weight as resistance, which can help you shape muscles, tone, increase flexibility and ultimately, burn fat. High intensity interval training This routine is great for those who are short on time, requiring extreme exertion in short intervals followed by a shorter recovery time. Yoga by air Yoga’s newest offering is called aerial or antigravity yoga, which combines classic yoga moves with acrobatics; all while being suspended in the air from a hammock. Banking on Your Terms Finding a good fit to keep more of your money When it comes to managing their money, people often use the same banking provider for a number of years. Whether you’re loyal to your current bank or are looking for a better option, it’s important to review the available benefits to ensure your financial needs are fully met. In an industry driven by technology, banks now serve up a platter of benefits to their account holders. From accounts that reimburse ATM fees to mobile apps, which allow up-to-date monitoring of funds, today’s banking is better than ever before. By making smart choices and using new technologies and resources, account holders are able to minimize their banking costs and have a clearer understanding of their finances. “Consumers should investigate what options are available to them,” said Ryan Bailey, executive vice president of deposit and payments, TD Bank. “For example, certain checking accounts waive non-bank ATM fees and some, such as our Convenience Checking account, offer a low minimum balance. By doing a little bit of homework, consumers can choose a product and an institution that matches up with their banking needs.” Banking benefits Getting the most from your bank involves a general knowledge of the

products and services that are out there, which may exceed the offerings of your current provider. In fact, according to the TD Bank Checking Experience Index, a nationwide survey of more than 3,000 checking account holders at various banks, 83 percent stated that they are satisfied with their day-to-day experience. But the survey also revealed that 36 percent are extremely or very likely to switch banks to avoid fees. Armed with the proper information, account holders who share these feelings will be pleased to know of the various fee-free options available to them. Here are some of the other benefits today’s banking customer can receive: Checking Al l c h e c k i n g a cco u nt s a re n o t created equal. Taking the time to find an account that aligns with individual needs improves the banking experience while minimizing costs. Some bank benefits include instantly issued free debit cards upon opening an account. For those looking for added convenience, free direct deposit may be just the ticket to make payday a breeze. And, while technology may be top of mind to many, banks are finding that good old-fashioned customer service is an equally essential part of today’s banking experience. Account holders seek branches that offer more hours in the evenings, on weekends

As an added bonus, this form of paper-free banking is the environmentally-friendly way to manage your money. ATMs Checking account holders who tend to use ATMs outside of their bank ’s net work should look to financial institutions with more convenient locations and specific accounts that reimburse these costs. Protect Against Theft I t seems like every day the media reports another story about identity theft, security breaches and other situations of fraudulent behavior. While it may seem that thieves are always devising new ways to steal, there are ways to protect your funds and your family. Here are three helpful tips to keep your money safe and secure: Be Aware of Your Balance: While it may not be possible to write down every transaction that occurs throughout your busy day, having a good idea of your balance is essential. An awareness of this figure will keep you alert of any strange activity should you become a target. Monitor Your Account Daily: The tools of online and mobile banking apps can make checking funds simple. If you don’t have online access, see if your bank offers a toll-free phone line to access your account information. Cover the Keypad: When using an ATM to check your balance or receive cash, always cover the keypad while entering your PIN number. Thieves are now using cameras and other tactics to steal this confidential information as you are pressing down on those buttons. Keeping it covered reduces the chance of having your account compromised. Photo courtesy of Getty Images

Connect And Grow With Women In Our Community

by Mimi Zelman

Tell us about you: I am a Colombian businesswoman born and raised in the City of Medellin. Because of my nationality, I had the great opportunity to grow up surrounded by the world of coffee and the beauty of nature that’s distinctly Colombian. My grandparents had a farm where my father helped plant and cultivate coffee. I don’t remember a time in my life where I wasn’t surrounded by coffee. As a child, I recall running around the coffee fields enjoying the aroma of the coffee plants and freshly picked beans. I didn’t know it at the time, but coffee was literally making its mark on my senses, which would serve me well many years later. I’m also number 11 of 12 children who were raised by hardworking, entrepreneurial parents. They were very strong people who helped me and my brothers and sisters form great values. They taught us all at a very young age the importance of working toward goals in order to achieve greatness. How did you get started? Since I was young girl, I had been surrounded by coffee, but I didn’t think beyond its aroma or texture because I simply knew it as a cultural element. It wasn’t until 2008 when a coffee crisis directly affected my life that I began to think of it as a livelihood and much more than just a crop. It was during this time that my family, who had devoted their life to working

coffee fields, lost the entire crop due to climate and erratic weather conditions. This was the impetus for me to become more involved with my family’s coffee production, and also led me to work on the formalization and legalization of our coffee company. Out of this very heartbreaking situation, I was able to find a silver lining because it pushed me to learn about this industry very quickly. I read everything I could get my hands on about coffee and leaned on people who had been in the industry for years – namely my family. I spoke with families, coffee pickers, mothers who lived on the coffee farms, their children, and truly learned how coffee goes from ‘farm to cup’. The coffee industry term – farm to cup – is used by so many, but for me it’s a way of life. After seeing entire families affected by the coffee crisis of 2008, I wanted to ensure that if this happened again, we could all survive and ride out the storm. This is why I chose to get started in the coffee business and devote my professional life to Colombian coffee. Tell us about your programs and events for women. The El Socorro Family Farm where Cafe Perfecto is grown and picked is located in the city of Amagá, Colombia. Just outside of Medellin, this town of 25,000 is wholly dependent on coffee growing. Entire families work on the farm as they plant, tend to and harvest the coffee each year. As a mother, I www.womenwithknowhow.com JULY 2014

realize how difficult it is to leave your children in order to go to work, so I wanted to create something for the mothers working on the El Socorro Family Farm. It was a no-brainer to create a program where mothers could leave their children in good care while they were away on the mountainside picking coffee. To that end, there was an unused building on our property that we’re in the process of converting into a pre-school. We’re expected to open the pre-school in late 2014 or early 2015, so mothers can rest easy knowing their babies and young children are being looked after right in the same area in which they work. In

addition, our coffee pickers will be able to get food supplies here at fairer price than traditional supermarkets. According to numerous coffee studies, the smallness of women’s hands mean they handle coffee beans more carefully and are better suited for picking. With this is mind, we want to ensure that our women coffee pickers have the best nutrition possible so that their quality of life in and out of the coffee fields are good. How have your prior career experiences prepared you for your journey in life? From a ver y young age, I was

taught the value of hard work by being surrounded by adults who were committed to their families and profession. I was from a very large family, so we didn’t always have the resources for everyone to attend school. In order to study, you had to work to pay your own way. This was the first lesson I learned when it came to preparing for a career. Being consistent, dedicated and fighting for a better life are all qualities my parents and family have taught me. I’m what you might call a “serial entrepreneur” since I’ve started several successful businesses in Colombian and now in Charlotte, NC with Café Perfecto. What would you most like our readers to know about your journey in business? In life? The world of coffee is like life in that it’s full of cycles and stages. I’ve learned that to get a good crop yield, you have to let a field rest and then start again elsewhere. The same can be said of life. You must continually reinvent yourself and plant your ideas in other places for them to grow. You must see every crisis as a new opportunity. I’ve chosen to start a new life in the United States and call Charlotte, NC my home.

I’m looking forward to bringing my knowledge of coffee to the U.S. It’s clear to me that the top notch coffee roasters are here in the U.S., so I hope to bridge some cultural gaps because coffee is so much more than a drink. It’s a connector. It’s a conversation starter. It’s diversity in a cup! Who would you describe as your mentor(s) and why? My number one mentor is my mother. She is one of the strongest people I know and worked tirelessly to raise 12 children. All of my brothers and sisters are different, but the one commonality we all share is tenacity. This drive to always do better was instilled in me by my mother. It’s gratifying to see this same drive in the mothers who pick coffee at El Socorro Family Farm. I see firsthand their daily struggles, how hard they work for their families, and how they want better for their children. I see my mother in them and they most definitely hold a special place in my heart. What’s on your bucket list and why? From a professional standpoint, I want to further promote Colombian www.womenwithknowhow.com JULY 2014

coffee as THE coffee in the United States. What’s more, I want my new business, Café Perfecto, to be recognized as the industry standard when it comes to Colombian coffee’s excellent flavor and wonderful aroma. It would be a dream come true for Café Perfecto’s story to be brought to life as we highlight the people who are behind every coffee bean. From a personal standpoint, I merely want the best for my family. We’re starting a new journey in the United States, so this adventure will undoubtedly have its challenges, but I’m ready! 36

Connect And Grow With Women In Our Community

Any difficult times you’d care to share with our readers? And if so what lesson have you learned? As I mentioned, 2008 was a very difficult year for coffee in Colombia. It led me to recommit to the coffee business and refocus my attention on making the El Socorro Family Farm a success. Fast forward to 2013, and once again Colombian coffee prices were in flux. However, my past experiences had prepared me for this, so I knew this was just another cycle and another “rebirth” was on the horizon. This rebirth came in the form of Café Perfecto’s creation and the business partnership created with my three other company partners in the United States. The difficulties brought about in 2013 forced me to learn more about the U.S. coffee market and put me on a path of discovery. The number one discovery – learning that a new life awaited me in the U.S. with coffee and Café Perfecto. If you could do one thing differently in your life, what would that be? For me, life is about continual improvement. To do this, I think you have to focus attention on helping others. All too often we get caught up in our own “stuff” to realize that by lending a hand to those in need ultimately helps us lead better lives. If I could do one thing differently, I would have taken on a greater social responsibility at a younger age. I know experiences shape you, so perhaps I needed to go through difficulties to appreciate

everything right in my life. Still, helping our women coffee pickers (and our men too), educating them, guiding them, and investing in their future is paramount. Stressing the importance of what they do and how they literally help shape the world around them can’t be understated. What do you wish you knew 20 years ago? I wish I had known that there is a whole world out there to discover. I wish I had known that greatness is only achieved by getting out of your comfort zone. Medellin is a wonderfully, beautiful city, but today I know there is life beyond my city full of learning experiences, diversity, and richness of cultures. I will always be a “Paisa” (what people are called who are from Medellin), but I also like to think of myself as a citizen of the world. In addition, I wish I had known more about coffee, its history, its production, and what happened after it was picked. It’s amazing how much learning I’ve done in the past year in regards to roasting and selling gourmet coffee. What is something people would be surprised to know about you? When I was traveling in China, I ate silkworm, cobra and scorpion. Don’t ask me how it tasted. What inspires you? Simply put, women inspire me. I see on a daily basis how women

affect positive change in their families, communities, and workplace. I’m so fortunate to have a mother who still today inspires me and work in an industry where women coffee pickers are revered and respected. Daily affirmations of what it is to be a woman – caring, dedicated, strong, tenacious, loving, and committed – drive me to be a better person. What makes you laugh? As a mother, I’m amazed at how children have the uncanny ability to make any situation comical. It’s probably their innocence combined with a www.womenwithknowhow.com JULY 2014

The condition affects both males and females. Shortly after diagnosis, Rebecca began treatments with subcutaneous immunoglobulin to boost her immune system. While her overall health improved, Rebecca became concerned about how CVID and its treatment might affect her dream of becoming a mother.

“My immunologist addressed my concerns and connected me with a woman with PI who had recently had a baby,” Rebecca said. “Hearing her story made me feel more comfortable with raising a family despite the challenges of living with PI.” In March 2012, Rebecca gave birth to her son Grant. A healthy, happy outlook Today, Rebecca works full time as an interior design project manager, and enjoys participating in a range of rigorous physical activities, including hiking, biking, traveling with her husband (a personal trainer), and spending quality time with her son. Big Marketing Ideas for Small Businesses

A

re personal relationships why most consumers frequent small businesses? From the mom and pop coffee shop to the small bookstore just down the street, people enjoy the personal interactions and convenience small businesses offer . In a recent survey about interactions between consumers and small businesses from Web.com, more than eight out of ten consumers said it’s important that a small business is customer-focused and provides personal, face-toface interaction with its customers. Respondents also wanted a small business to be local, convenient and reliable. Grow online: To account for consumers’ desire for personal relationships, small businesses should have a big presence on the Internet, but only 41 percent of small businesses surveyed even had a website. Those without a website said they didn’t see the need for one, or the cost of designing and maintaining a site was a barrier.

46

Connect And Grow With Women In Our Community

On the other hand, 83 percent of consumers who responded said having a website and use of social media is important to their consideration and choice of a small business. “Small businesses have historically relied on face-to-face relationships to grow and differentiate themselves, but today’s consumers are demanding that these relationships extend into ‘e-Main Street’,” says David Brown, president, chairman and CEO of Web. com. “Our survey found a significant disconnect between how small businesses decision-makers think they are delivering on customers’ expectations versus the reality of consumers’ perceptions. The good news is small businesses are starting to realize the web’s untapped

potential to reach consumers who are eager for online engagement.” Stay in touch: Everyone knows how

not overwhelm or annoy them with too much of a good thing. Keep your messages consistent, concise and professional. If you’re not sure how to get started, the Internet offers a lot of resources about how to successfully set up your online presence and use Google, Facebook and Twitter to market and grow your business online. You can also find information online at www.Web.com.

important it is to stay in touch with friends. If you’re a small business owner, don’t forget to stay in touch with your customers so they won’t forget about you. Use social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, along with email to notify your customers about special promotions or to just remind them about the great benefits you offer. While it’s easy to blast an email to every customer or post an endless stream of cute pictures on Facebook, it’s important to

Provide personal service: Set your business apart by giving every customer the personal interaction and convenience they crave. Simply asking customers about their purchases or how you can serve them better gives you a consistent stream of information you can use to refine your goods or services and increase sales. Make sure every employee understands the value in talking to customers and tracking feedback. The bottom line for every small business is that consumers are demanding online interaction and involvement with businesses, both big and small.
