Nearly 9,200 residents and visitors attended the 2019 MIMCF event at the MACC. Maui County’s largest products show, the 6th Annual Hawaiian Airlines Made in Maui County Festival (MIMCF), attracted thousands of residents and visitors to the Maui Arts & Cultural Center (MACC) in Kahului on November 1 and 2, 2019.

We accomplish this mission by: • Helping Maui County businesses grow which creates many public benefits, including: new jobs, additional tax revenue, and product diversity.

The festival was presented by the Maui Chamber of Commerce and supported by the County of Maui Office of Economic Development. Hawaiian Airlines was the event’s title sponsor.

• Exposing Maui County manufacturing businesses to prospective retailers, buyers, wholesalers, and distributors worldwide to help them expand beyond Maui County to statewide, domestic and international markets.

Over 140 vendors (including 11 companies from Molokai, 1 from Lanai, and 5 from Hana) participated in this two-day event – a veritable showcase of Made-in-Maui-County products. In addition, 16 food trucks also presented a diverse menu of island cuisine in the event’s Pasha Hawaii Food Court.

• Showcasing locally made products that have a 51 percent of their value added in Hawaii, with their companies headquartered in Maui County, which promotes our local entrepreneurship and opportunities for investment.

The mission of this annual event is to improve our economic well-being by helping to grow and sustain Maui County’s manufacturers which diversifies the economy, showcases entrepreneurship and locally made products, and encourages job creation in our community.

• Strengthening Maui County’s and our state’s visitor industry attraction efforts by providing a quality destination event that is marketed worldwide. • Encouraging sustainable growth by promoting shop Maui County first to residents and visitors worldwide and providing avenues to accomplish this year-round. • Providing business development services and training to expand the capacity of local manufacturers.

During the 2019 festival, two days of fabulous shopping and activities were offered to the general public: • On Friday, November 1, shoppers who wanted a one-day head start were offered the opportunity to purchase tickets for a special “Exclusive Shopping Day” held from 1:30 pm to 6 pm. Attendees enjoyed the festival’s Opening Ceremony with light refreshments, 3 food trucks in the Pasha Hawaii Food Court, and a prize drawing for a two-night stay at The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua (must be present to win). Each attendee also received a free Festival tote bag. Tickets ($35 per person) were available via the MACC Box Office, children 12 and under were free. On Saturday, attendees enjoyed a myriad of onstage activities, including fashion shows, live entertainment, and prize drawings.

• On Friday, November 1, wholesale buyers and distributors were also invited to a special “Buyers Preview” held from 1:30 pm to 6 pm. Qualified attendees registered online and received complimentary admission. The Preview event offered an opportunity for wholesalers/distributors to talk one-on-one with vendors about their products and to place orders. • On Saturday, November 2, the “Big Festival Day” opened from 8 am to 4:30 pm. Saturday’s festivities featured live entertainment, fashion shows, and 13 food trucks in the Pasha Hawaii Food Court. Complimentary transportation was available to/ from the MACC from War Memorial (near the gym and the baseball stadium), Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center and Kahului Shopping Center.

Nearly 9,200 residents and visitors attended the 2019 MIMCF event at the MACC. In reviewing the impact of the 2019 MIMCF, some of the event highlights include: • Nearly 9,200 visitors and residents attended the two-day festival of which approximately 28% percent were visitors. • In a post-event evaluation, participating Product Vendors reported as a result of the two-day festival: - Over $650,799 total product sales. - Over 38,508 units sold. - Over 323 total new wholesale accounts/orders were closed. - Over 257 new wholesale leads and/or prospects were developed. • Over 600 qualified wholesale buyers and distributors across the state and as far away as Japan registered to attend the festival’s invitation-only Buyers Preview on Friday, November 1. Vital to vendors’ success and the event’s overall economic impact, this B2B event is helping to take Maui County’s businesses to new heights and to markets with both domestic and international export potential. We’ve already seen some of our festival vendors transition from hobby businesses to full-fledged manufacturing, with more and more jobs created each year. This year’s MIMCF Pasha Hawaii Food Court was a “zero waste” event zone. Working for Maui Huliau Foundation’s Green Events Team, participating food truck vendors, and the MACC; the event was able to divert 617 lbs of waste from going into the landfill.

c e n Measures a m r o f r e P One of the key components to the festival is our ability to collect impact data.

• We track attendance throughout the festival via ticket sales, and manually count children 12 and under who receive free admission.

• Each festival vendor is required to complete a MIMCF Post-Event survey that includes their company data, employee count, sales made during the festival, wholesale leads and future orders gained, their insights for how to make the festival better, plus feedback on how the festival helped their business.

• Through the prize drawings slips, we are able to determine the percentage of visitors to residents. The prize drawing entry slip asks for the zip code of their residence. We use the zip codes to determine the percentage of visitors to residents. Attendees’ information is also added to the event’s database.

Below is an Event Performance Dashboard, which shows the impact of the festival over the years.

Entrepreneurial Support

The Made in Maui Marketplace website – www.MadeInMauiCounty.com – showcases an exciting array of locally made products year-round.

The annual Hawaiian Airlines Made in Maui County Festival is the most sought-after products show on Maui offering Maui County businesses the opportunity to unveil new products, meet with prospective wholesalers and distributors, and connect with new customers. Entrepreneurial support is also offered via the following programs: •

A dynamic entrepreneurial ecosystem has also been developed around the festival, with 15 business development partners offering a wealth of programs, grants, consulting, micro-loans and workshops to further the success of these companies year-round. Even those companies who do not get selected to showcase their products are offered a free one-hour business consult. Refer to pages 30-32.

9

The online shopping resource called the “Made in Maui County Marketplace” – www.MadeInMauiCounty. com – continued to provide festival vendors and other local businesses who produce Made-in-Maui-County products with an opportunity to connect with potential buyers year-round. In 2019, all MIMCF product vendors received a complimentary one-year Made in Maui County Marketplace membership valued at $25. Benefits included a company profile page and three product pages plus publicity of products throughout the year. The Marketplace is a project of the University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR) in cooperation with the County of Maui Office of Economic Development and the Maui Chamber of Commerce.

Made in Maui, Moloka‘i, & Lana‘i Seal

Known for being no ka ‘oi (the best), Maui County has a long history of innovation, entrepreneurship, and collaboration. This, combined with our spirit of aloha, spurs the development of cherished, high-quality, value-added products that are loved by residents and visitors alike. Originated and trademarked by the Maui Chamber of Commerce and its trade association, the Made in Maui label assures consumers that a product is of Maui origin, with at least 51 percent of its value added on island, and that local hands helped produce it. Member artisans and boutique manufacturers take tremendous pride in their creations, which feature the beauty and bounty of Maui County. They serve as ambassadors for the island and its people through their offerings, and work together to increase awareness of locally made products and the small businesses that support the Maui County community. In 2019, the Maui Chamber of Commerce expanded the Made in Maui program to include “Made in Lanai” and “Made in Molokai” seals and were provided to 2019 Made in Maui County Festival vendors to use on their product packaging. The trademarked seals conveys that the products bearing this mark are authentic, locally made goods. It is a sign of “Local People, Local Pride.”

Vendor Testimonials “This event really showcases the innovation and vibrancy of our Maui Nui entrepreneurial community and the shoppers who come to this event really know what they want. A lot of people have heard about my products, but they don’t know where to get it, so this is a great event to educate them about my products.”

- Tina Keko‘olani, Haleakala Supah Shots

“We love the community interaction at this festival! The internet does amazing things, but with a product that you have to eat, smell and taste; seeing it in person is critical in retaining your fan base and getting new ones. Food has to taste good. You can’t read how good something tastes.”

- Justin Orr, HI Spice

“This was the first time I participated as a vendor in this event. I made over 1,000 contacts on the first day for my farm’s products. We sold our guava jam, sold out all our t-shirts, our coffee, and made connections for other products that I sell on the farm, as well as my books. I’m definitely going to participate in this festival from now on.”

- George Kahumoku Jr.

“This festival offers a great platform for all local products to reach a much wider audience than you can do with other shows or independently.”

- Heidi Cramer, Maui Cookie Lab

“During last year’s Festival, I was invited to participate in the Hankyu Hawaii Fair in Osaka, Japan. I learned a lot about exporting and doing business in international markets which has really helped to grow my company.”

- Debbie Jokovich, Sassy Saks

14

“During the festival, I always like to have new designs to share and new products to present to established retailers.”

- Severina Lopez, A Maui Day Original Handbags

“The MIMCF has inspired me to explore direct-to-customer options with focused ads to chosen demographics. To do this, I am switching my current website platform and creating a new site for my business.”

- Amity Mason, A.M.I.T.Y by Amity Mason Designs

“The MIMCF is an upscale event with lots of first-class competition. We are challenged to find new and exciting ways to display our product as well as planning the season prior to grow new and interesting products. This event has been a great opportunity to showcase new product lines for the coming year. Additionally, because the event fosters a great deal of community interest, enthusiasm and vendor clout, it is an excellent resource for us to develop new retail customer base which is far more challenging than our small farmers market venues.”

- Alan J Davidson, Aloha Botanicals Maui

“This event helped me to improve marketing, become prepared for wholesale, add new merchandise and meet new potential wholesale and retail customers.”

- Linda Coleon, Aloha Letterpress

“In preparation for this festival, we made changes to our website to create online ordering system, and fine-tuned our pricing and wholesale catalog.”

- Jennifer Stephens, Artful Scents

All our customers were more than enthusiastic with our presentation, making it all so rewarding.”

r i u a e l n Services e r p e r t n E In addition to providing MIMCF vendors with a worldclass venue to showcase their products and opportunities to connect with wholesalers and distributors, the event’s organizers also offer these businesses a number of resources and support year-round. These efforts include one-on-one assistance ranging from marketing support, branding, inventory control, cost and pricing analysis, and wholesale readiness.

In Maui County, we have a variety of businesses from entrepreneurs who want to start a business all the way up to very successful and even legendary small businesses and we have a variety of resources and programs to help them through every stage of growth. The Made in Maui County Festival becomes a pipeline and referral system to other organizations and vice versa as sometimes businesses start with an organization for assistance and then get referred to the festival and other organizations. The festival is not just one day in the year for selling, but gives them year round resources and education.

Throughout the year, the County of Maui Office of Economic Development (OED) also brings together a number of valued business development partners to offer local entrepreneurs a wealth of programs, grants, consulting, and workshops to further their success. This in turn, has helped increase the capacity, knowledge, and skills for these small manufacturers helping to position them for success.

Applying to be a part of the festival is often the first step and alerts us to their business. As we review applications, both approved and denied vendors are given feedback on their products, packaging, labeling, pricing, etc.

OED works in partnership with the community, business and government sectors to strengthen and diversify the economy by supporting existing businesses. Through its grant program, OED assists in the attraction, development and expansion of new businesses and events that in turn provides new jobs for our community.

If a vendor is denied, they are provided with resources for additional help. Vendors also get experience and assistance with: • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Business planning Wholesale pricing Appropriate packaging for wholesaling Product labeling Understanding marketing Understanding trade shows including booth designs and layout Branding Correct food labeling Importing and exporting Connections to national and international trade opportunities and statewide opportunities Connections to buyers from Hawaii, the US and around the world. Assistance with getting business research Connections to free and low cost training programs Free media exposure through social media, TV, video spots, radio, etc.

We leverage the festival dollars and investment to link these companies to a variety of other services and organizations year-round.

Zero Waste Food Court This year’s MIMCF Pasha Hawaii Food Court was a “zero waste” event zone. Working with Maui Huliau Foundation’s Green Events Team, participating food truck vendors, the Maui Arts & Cultural Center; and the MIMCF event team focused on reducing waste and encouraging a more sustainable Maui. Highlights of these efforts, included: Through five manned waste sorting stations, vendor cooperation in sourcing compostable products, and around 80 hours of man power combined, the Green Events team was able to divert 617 lbs of the total from going into the landfill, the majority of that being composted on a local farm. The Green Events Team was present at the food truck vendor event preparation meeting in order to answer questions and share resources to help them source the approved disposables. The Maui Arts and Cultural Center also chose to take part in greening efforts by providing water refill stations in order to reduce single use plastic water bottles. Through this effort they were able to avoid the use of over 2,000+ plastic water bottles! The 2019 Waste Report prepared by Maui Huliau Foundation’s Green Events Team on the following page reflects all of the waste collected within the food court area. These included: •

Waste from food vendors and guests.

Waste collected from the vendors was sorted to be sure of the highest diversion rate possible.

Waste collected from guests was sorted at the volunteer manned waste stations into recycling, compostable food waste, compostable foodware, compostable PLA, and trash.

All waste was weighed and data recorded as it was emptied from the stations and vendors. The 550 lbs of compost included all food waste and compostable food ware paper or bagasse products. Compostable PLA in not farm compostable but is weighed separately in order to collect data on potential compostables, but is ultimately added into the trash total. Maui Huliau used the total attendance number as a way to calculate the waste to landfill per attendee.

Through this program, students provide much-needed extra hands to Moloka‘i’s entrepreneurs while offering students insight into what it takes to run a business. It’s a win-win program, inspiring the next generation of business owners and leaders on Moloka‘i. Not only did the students learn about business concepts through real life experiences, but they were able to really see what adult life is like. While completing internship hours with their mentors they developed compassion for their entrepreneurial mentors while watching all that they were responsible for – juggling primary jobs, household chores, kids, all while successfully running and managing their businesses. Through their daily journals and reflections, it was apparent that the students found the relevancy of the internship program. As a result of the connections made through the Made in Maui County Festival Internship Program, three of the ten students were offered employment. These students include a senior who is currently working part time at Kanemitsu Bakery, a junior that will be sewing with Kainanea Designs when her busy school/athletics schedule allows her, and a senior who will be working with Lanakila Designs starting next semester. A digital media student created a series of video journals that documented her journey through internship. Additionally, one of the seniors was able to use the internship to earn her CTE Honors Diploma. In her final presentation, she shared that she is headed to college to study Marketing and hopes to one day return and help foster successful programs like the Made in Maui County Festival. This internship program a win-win for the community – inspiring the next generation of business owners and leaders on Moloka‘i.

“What our student interns felt was real and the memories made will last a lifetime ¬– these experiences cannot be duplicated in the natural school setting. We look forward to seeing what these students will bring back to our communities when it’s their turn.”

- Maliekekai Ward, Moloka‘i High School CTE Coordinator & Teacher

“It definitely took me out of my comfort zone. I’ve been interacting with a lot of new people, which is a good thing. And, it taught me how to run a business, what are the steps to selling a product. It’s also helped me see if I wanted to start my own business. It was a good experience.” - Courtney Tabil, Moloka‘i High School senior

“I leaned that it’s hard work and very consuming. Now when I look at a business, I see things differently.” - Jordyn McCutcheon, Moloka‘i High School sophomore

“It’s not easy running a business, these guys have to go through a lot.”

- Vaai Seumalo, Moloka‘i High School senior
