THE TEATRO DI GIARDINI IN 100 YEARS TIME: Rising sea-levels submerge the building and its arched detailing, transforming it into an artificial reef. The concrete frame is taken over by barnacles and other marine life

which encrust its surface, transforming it into a new world. This concept projection represents the ecological sustainability of my design beyond the era of human occupation. [Model overlaid with own image of mussels and algae on site.]

SPECTATORS VIEW: As the sun sets, a series of temporary lighting installments glow the stage and relfect on the water which surrounds them, creating an enchanting evening.

CLAMS EYE VIEW: The eye-line of molluscs opposite the stage encompasses the performers as they rehearse outside on a warm summer’s day.The cityscape and the waterline of the lagoons frame a pleasant backdrop on which dog whelks and other tidal life sharing the building can gaze.

SUSTAINABLE TOURISM: Although the Biennale festivals already attract a lot tourism to this area during summer months, the Teatro di Giardini provides performance and workshop spaces for local drama students all year round. Residential workers are offered longterm accommodation contracts to combat the surge in rent as a result of tourism.

To relate my building’s design to the macro context of Venice I studied the Palazzo Ca’ d’Ora’s facade and re-visited my Palazzo Spinelli palace drawing from “Primer.” I selected five key arches from these palaces to simplify and cast in con-

STAGE 3. “PALACE OF ECOLOGIES” TEATRO DI GIARDINI PROJECT.TECHNICAL INTEGRATION.

LAGOON EXCAVATION The construction areas for the stage and walkways are drained using a sheet piling system and construction site pumps to excavate lagoon water.

FOUNDATIONS Refinforced concrete driven piles are inserted using a drop hammer piling rig. Recyled aggregate is then laid to make the ground stable.

PRIMARY STRUCTURE Reinforcement bars are assembled, and wooden shuttering/formwork is erected around them to line up structural walls. In-situ concrete is poured permanently.

SECONDARY STRUCTURE The same shuttering/formwork technique is repeated to cast the inner concrete core, whilst ribbed slab beams are assembled to span between structural walls. Intermediate flooring is stacked above the structure.

The ‘Self-grow Housing Scheme’ is an economically and socially-led project which aims to regenerate a run-down area in Leith, Edinburgh,by promoting a culture of gardening to create enjoyable and sustainable housing for the area. Fresh produce can be sold/purchased in the ground floor grocery, creating jobs and support for surrounding residents.

These measures ensure that good levels of natural lighting can be received internally whilst efficient space for growth and communal gardening is optimised externally.

INHABIT: 1:100 SECTIONAL MODEL: The integration of greenhouse balconies alongside maximised use of vegetable patches both private (around the entrances to accommodation) and public, with shared allotments on the first floor and rooftop, is designed to encourage self-grow activity through residential areas and livelihood.

THE GREENHOUSE BALCONY: ATMOSPHERIC COLLAGE

HE ROOFTOP GARDEN: ATMOSPHERIC COLLAGE

ATMOSPHERIC COLLAGES: Mixed-media representation of rooftop allotments and greenhouse balconies in use. Residents and neighbours from near-by housing are inspired to engage together socially in public or private whilst harvesting or feasting on home-grown food. This concept offers a new way of life for Leith by the year 2030.

STAGE 3. “PALACE OF ECOLOGIES” PRIMER PROJECT.

A ‘PALACE’ FOR A WOOD-PECKER: This fusion of man-made and natural elements transforms the organic habitat of a woodpecker into an instrument which can convey a sense of luxurious living. Metal panelling and a welded roof encourage the bird to drum upon the habitat’s surface to amplify the volume of his vibrations.

In doing so, this bird-house design creates a palace-like experience for the woodpecker, as he can now bring more wood-boring insects to the tree’s surface, attract a mate and mark his territory, thus affording him indulgence, romance and power.
