NOTES FROM ARTISTIC DIRECTOR To say we are excited to bring Tuacahn’s 22nd season to life would be an understatement as it includes a spectacular summer Broadway musical lineup, an all new holiday musical production, Fairy Tale Christmas, and concerts by The Fab Four, The Piano Guys and many more. Straight from the streets of our impeccably designed New York City set, Disney’s Newsies will be “carrying the banner” and fighting for the underdog. Meanwhile the fantastical world of Shrek, The Musical combines big, colorful costumes with humor that is perfect for families to enjoy. And you’ll be hard-pressed to find someone not dancing and singing in the aisles as they leave this year’s production of Mamma Mia! The very best way to enjoy this incredible season is to purchase a season package. The benefits of a season package include the following: - Lowest price for all three Broadway shows. - 20% savings on most concerts and Fairy Tale Christmas. - One free date exchange per Broadway show. Premium season package holders receive all that plus: - Access to the new air conditioned VIP lounge with private concessions and restrooms. - Complimentary seat cushion rental and bottled water at your seat during Broadway shows. At Tuacahn, we provide so much more than just an opportunity to see amazing Broadway shows. Our patrons love the state of the art technological elements, the larger than life set designs, the top notch singing, acting and dancing, and the beautiful canyon scenery that makes seeing a show at Tuacahn an unforgettable experience. NEWSIES DIRECTOR NOTES I don’t think a lot of audience members know what a Director/Choreographer actually does (that’s a good thing - I believe if you are aware of the direction of a play or musical there’s a good chance it’s not good direction). So let’s assume you are reading this in between bites of a cinnamon churro or some frozen lemonade, looking for some theatrical enlightenment. A director reads the play or musical and decides how the action on the stage is going to occur, what parts of the story are most important to convey and how to best convey them. Basically, the director ultimately guides, or directs, the actors, musicians, and designers towards his or her vision about how the show will look, feel and manifest. For instance, an actor might say a line of dialogue with a lot of anger and frustration. The director might feel that the line will land better with the audience if it’s said in a slightly different manner, and will help guide the actor that way. The monstrously beautiful set in front of you, designed by Brad Shelton, is the result of Brad and I sitting together last fall, discussing what we wanted you to feel while you watch the show as well as what the story and my choreography requires. Hopefully, you are feeling a sense of the massive size of New York City, and when our actors tell our story, you will, maybe, see a small group of young individuals trying to fight against a larger power. (Hint: that is what we are going for, but you might see something else as well. That’s cool, too!) Thus the set acts as a metaphor as well as practical scenic device. These are just two of many examples of how directors work. A choreographer is in charge of the actual movement of the piece, including the dancing. If someone does a physical movement to music, the choreographer, in most cases, directed them to do it. Now, if the Director/Choreographer has a Cracker Jack team around him (as I definitely do) the work elevates to an even better level than he or she could have ever been able to accomplish on his or her own. I am the beneficiary of an incredibly talented, dedicated and smart cast: my awesome Production Stage Manager, Monica Dickhens; fantastic designers - Brad Shelton on Scenic Design, Cory Pattak on Lighting Design, Maria Lenn on Costume Design, Julie Ferrin on Sound Design, Jen Schuler on Props, D. Alexander Rovang on Music Direction; my irreplaceable Associate Choreographer, Ashley Marinelli; plus, the countless other people who help support and facilitate the process. The product you are about to see has been creatively influenced by all of us, not just me, and I’m incredibly proud and honored to be working with all of them. The story of the Newsies strike of 1899 is important, and we have all been tasked with bringing it to life with truth, joy and humor. I hope you enjoy 1.) the show, 2.) this short theatre 101 lesson, and 3.) your cinnamon churro. Thank you for coming to Tuacahn!

ABOUT TUACAHN AMPHITHEATRE

OUR STORY

By Joseph E. Smith, Public Relations

(Ivins, UT) In the spring of 1995, Tuacahn Amphitheatre opened its doors to share with its audiences Tuacahn’s first musical theatre production UTAH! It was the beginning of a dream for Tuacahn Center for the Arts - a dream to heighten the arts, education, and the community it serves. The musical UTAH! debuted in 1995 and was originally to be Tuacahn’s staple and sole production. After four years audiences began to dwindle despite the solidity of the show. In 1999 the Tuacahn Board felt that it needed to shift its strategy and pursue a new direction. “We’re proud of what we accomplished with UTAH!,” said Kevin Smith, Tuacahn’s CEO, “but after several years of one show, it was clear that people wanted to see something new.” A brilliant direction was conceived and Broadway in the Canyon was born. Broadway in the Canyon Broadway in the Canyon would bring to the stage two or three Broadway tested musicals but done in a unique way that could not be duplicated anywhere else. To test this direction, Tuacahn performed

66

Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. It worked! The shows were well received and the amphitheatre found itself in the enviable position of dealing with huge crowds and sold out houses. Since the opening of Broadway in the Canyon, Tuacahn continued to produce a variety of Broadway hit musicals from Fiddler on the Roof to Singin’ in the Rain. “We took a bit more of a risk to really elevate our production quality,” say Scott Anderson, Tuacahn’s Artistic Director. “We attracted seasoned Broadway professional actors. Our design team worked year round building sets, designing costumes and expanding the stage to provide a greater theatrical experience. We really put our reputation on the line and invested more than we ever had; and it paid off.” Tuacahn High School In 1999, Tuacahn High School for the Perfoming Arts opened its doors as the first public charter school in the state of Utah. The high school has grown from just a handful of eager students to a thriving student body today of more than 380.

ABOUT TUACAHN AMPHITHEATRE With an emphasis in the performing arts, THS is a school where on any given day you might find dancers choreographing in the halls, musicians playing at lunch, actors practicing their lines, singers filling the school with song, or artists gazing, brush in hand, at the majesty of towering red cliffs just outside the windows. Saturday Market Saturday Market is one more way that those who want to experience more of Tuacahn can enjoy its wonderful surroundings in an outdoor market in the canyon featuring local artwork, crafts, food and entertainment. It is a wonderful opportunity for people looking for something fun to do on any Saturday morning and for crafters to show off their wares. A Community Asset Perhaps the greatest thing that has transpired over Tuacahn’s story is the transformation of an obscure amphitheatre somewhat isolated from the nearby communities of Washington County, Utah into a real community asset and statewide gem.

www.tuacahn.org

“We had no idea in the beginning how Tuacahn would help fuel the local economy like it has over the years,” says Kevin Smith. “We truly look at ourselves as a community asset as we now draw 70% of our patrons from out of town. They are sleeping in local hotels, eating in local restaurants, and buying other goods and services. It’s estimated that Tuacahn this last year contributed more than $80 million in terms of economic impact to our local economy; second only to Zion National Park. ” The last 20 years have been a great adventure for Tuacahn Center for the Arts. Tuacahn wants to thank patrons like you who come and enjoy the shows and concerts, who give of their time and money to help Tuacahn create high quality family fun entertainment. Thanks to the past and future generosity of its patrons and supporters, Tuacahn will be here for the next 20 years; and who knows what magic and adventure will come along the way…
