Set in a beautiful Victorian capital from the past, the city’s sparkling skyline dazzles the stage. European folk characters Father Christmas and the Snow Maiden escort Clara and the Nutcracker Prince to their dream world in Act II. Finally, the “Dove of Peace,” exclusive to “NUTCRACKER! Magical Christmas Ballet,” welcomes the couple to the “Land of Peace and Harmony” (traditionally called “The Land of Sweets”). The “Dove of Peace” was inspired by the performances of Stanislov Vlasov, former Bolshoi Ballet dancer and choreographer/ballet master of “NUTCRACKER! Magical Christmas Ballet’s” inaugural 1993 North American tour, and partner Lilia Sabitova, People’s Artist.

Kirkland Fine Arts Center is pleased to bring this magical ballet back to the stage. Find out more at millikin.edu/nutcracker.

THEATRE

The Learned Ladies

Directed by Jefferson Farber

“The Learned Ladies” is one of Molière’s great farces. This modernized adaptation satirizes the pretensions of academics and the logic of people in love. The play finds Henriette hoping to marry the handsome Clotilde. But Henriette’s mother, aunt and older sister have other ideas. In their overzealous quest for education and empowerment, these “learned ladies” want a different match. Add a meek but well-meaning husband, a practical brother-in-law and a few mouthy servants, and what follows is a hilarious night at the theatre.

“The Learned Ladies” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc. www.concordtheatricals.com

Commissioned by Millikin University’s New Musicals Workshop

Directed by Lori Bales

Music Directed by Kevin Long

“The Spell of Red River” is an intergenerational story about family, grief and finding your magic. When Vel inherits a mysterious school building in her recently deceased mother’s hometown, she goes searching for answers to questions about her family history that her mother took to the grave. Along the way, she meets a plucky Technocoven of college students who help her solve the mystery of the Spell of Red River. Vel is a witch and has a unique aptitude for psychometry — the ability to discover facts about an event or person by touching inanimate objects associated with them.

“The Spell of Red River” is the first musical commissioned by Millikin’s New Musicals Workshop and is made possible through a leap of faith and a generous donation from Charlene Callison and Larry Balsamo.
