STUDENT-RUN VENTURES AT MILLIKIN UNIVERSITY ACTION. COLLABORATIVE RELATIONSHIPS. LEADERSHIP. SKILL. COURAGE. These qualities combine to power Performance Learning, our hallmark approach to education, which moves classroom theory to real-world application. Opportunities for Performance Learning occur across campus and across colleges, embodying diversity and inclusiveness. Student-run ventures, internships, immersion courses and study abroad programs each play a critical role in curriculum throughout the arts, sciences, social sciences, humanities and, of course, the world of business.

At Millikin, there isn’t one group driving the spirit of learning; rather, the spirit of learning does the driving.

Students are offered a wide range of opportunities to test drive their skills in an environment outside of learning laboratories. These ventures are supported by Millikin faculty and staff, but they are managed and run by students. WELCOME WEEK Welcome Week takes place the week before classes begin and helps new students develop the skills to be successful in their Millikin careers. The events at Welcome Week will guide newcomers in finding their homes at Millikin, whether that’s through a student organization, an internship, intramurals, community service or more.

MILLI-KINSHIP Certain students, based on high school credentials, may be assigned a secondary student development advisor. These advisors can help students through difficulties transitioning to college and connect them with campus and community resources. All of our student development advisors are trained to assist students with college success, and their goal is to help students thrive at Millikin!

STUDENT MENTAL & BEHAVIORAL SERVICES CENTER Millikin's Student Mental and Behavioral Services Center focuses on primary prevention, health promotion, treatment, maintenance and crisis response. An emphasis is placed on assessment of students, outreach, case management and cooperation with local partners such as Crossing Healthcare, A&E Behavioral Health, Heritage Behavioral Health and St. Mary's Hospital.

OFFICE OF PUBLIC SAFETY The Office of Public Safety is open 24-hours a day, seven days a week. They offer Safe Rides and Safe Walks from dusk until dawn every day for the safety of students on or near campus. A dispatch center also monitors the local and national news for weather and crisis information.

YOU BELONG HERE Millikin University’s mission is to deliver on the promise of education, and in keeping with that mission, Millikin is committed to maintaining an inclusive campus culture that respects and invites exploration of the diverse perspectives, experiences, cultures, languages and identities reflected in our community.

At Millikin, diversity is seen in broad terms, including race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, gender, disability, national origin, religion, sexual orientation and age. Through the recruitment of diverse students, staff, faculty and administrators, and by creating an environment that values diversity, Millikin seeks to provide an engaged learning community in which diversity enhances the total educational experience.

We are dedicated to creating a campus culture that respects and values diversity while providing a variety of different opportunities to celebrate differences within our inclusive community. These values were emphasized several years ago through the creation of the President's Commission on Inclusive Excellence, which was formed to advance the University's work and education on topics such as race, equality and social justice.

We believe that the leadership opportunities, inclusive programs and educational resources provided at Millikin University will empower our students to explore both who they are and who they will become as humans and global citizens. We are committed to helping all of our students feel a deep sense of belonging, a strong purpose and a great understanding of identity.

We believe that this dedication to inclusive excellence is necessary to fulfill the commitments put forth in our mission statement:

DECATUR’S UNIVERSITY

Our University is big on personality. The same goes for our city. Millikin is located in Decatur, Ill., with a population of approximately 70,000 residents. Our students don’t just live in Decatur; they get involved. Whether MU students work as interns at one of two area hospitals, attend a MillikinDecatur Symphony Orchestra concert or shop downtown, they embrace and engage the local communities. Downtown Decatur recently underwent a $14 million public development improvement to bring a new look, feel and energy to the city’s central business district. The downtown area includes many locally owned restaurants, specialty shops, art galleries and entertainment opportunities that Millikin students visit regularly. Lake Decatur remains a popular destination for many in the community. With a 22-mile scenic lake frontage, its water recreation activities include swimming, water skiing/jet skiing, paddleboarding and, of course, fishing. Decatur also has two award-winning golf courses, including Red Tail Run, a recently opened signature course designed by legendary PGA Hall of Famer Raymond Floyd.

Did You Know? Decatur was the original home of the Chicago Bears, from 1919 to 1920. The football team was then known as the Decatur Staleys and played at Staley Field, both named after the local food products manufacturer. Millikin’s President’s home was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright’s assistants Hermann V. von Holst and Marion Mahony.
