Intro: NFL Draft Issue

Page 1

Derek Carr (near left) and brother David dare to scheme.

NOBODY DRAWS UP A PLAY EXPECTING IT TO FAIL. The same can be said about assembling a draft board. But these are imperfect plans crafted by imperfect people. Hence the erasable marker. The only thing known for sure: When it comes to the NFL draft, everyone has smudges. Just ask Derek Carr, whose big brother’s bad rep follows him everywhere he goes. Or Teddy Bridgewater, whose unfortunate pro day overshadows three years of picturesque production. Or Mel and Todd, whose many months of mocks, no matter the picks, will be mocked on May 8. Because that’s draft night—the night when imperfect plans crafted by imperfect people are written in permanent marker. And rest assured, not long after the dust settles, some sorry GM will inevitably be looking for an eraser that’s nowhere to be found.
