BY HEATHER WELCH CNRMA Public Affairs On September 19 and 20, the 2015 Naval Air Station Oceana Air Show will showcase the very best of military and civilian aviation for spectators from around the world who are expected to attend. This year, NAS Oceana is proud to honor the service, valor and sacrifice of our Vietnam Veterans and to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. By bringing more awareness to this anniversary during the 2015 Air Show, NAS Oceana and the public will have an opportunity to thank and honor our Vietnam Veterans, including personnel who were held as prisoners of war or listed as missing in action. The NAS Oceana Air Show has a reputation for drawing the very best performers. The 2015 show will feature the U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels. In addition, crowds will enjoy performances by the GEICO Skytypers, A-4 Skyhawk, Shockwave Jet Truck, and many more civilian aviation demonstrations and U.S. Navy air power. The NAS Oceana Air Show, which was named the 2012 “Blue Angel Air Show of the Year” and the 2014 “Dick Schram Memorial Community Relations Award Winner,” has been a signature annual event in Virginia Beach for more than 50 years. The Air Show’s main event occurs on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 19 – 20, with gates opening at 8 a.m., flying beginning at 10 a.m. and the Blue Angels performance at 3 p.m. Unique to

NAVY GOLD STAR PROGRAM COMES TO OCEANA BY CARRIE ANDERSON Jet Observer The unthinkable happens all the time. Sailors lose their lives on active duty, leaving their family members to pick up the pieces, grieve and try to move on. Although they may not know it, they are not alone. The Navy has started the Gold Star Program to provide long-term support to surviving families of Sailors who pass while on active duty. Launched last year, the Navy Gold Star (NGS) program provides Gold Star Families, families that have lost a Sailor while on active duty, a level of long-term assistance and support not previously available through the Navy. There are also new NGS region and installation coor-

dinators, who are on hand locally to help coordinate the long-term care needed for surviving family members. “I’m very proud of the steps we’re taking to embrace our Gold Star Family Program,” said NAS Oceana Commanding Officer Capt. Louis Schager. “I think it’s a long time coming and Oceana’s excited to include the Gold Star Program into our Naval Air Station Oceana Air Show this Fall.” Samantha Blackwell, a tall woman with a flower perpetually pinned in her hair and a ready hug for everyone she meets, is the Gold Star coordinator on Oceana.
