The Commander, Navy Region MidAtlantic (CNRMA) Sailor of the Year was announced during a ceremony at Naval Station Great Lakes, Nov. 20. Rear Adm. Ricky Williamson, commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic, announced Air Traffic Controller 1st Class Darren Johnson of Naval Station Norfolk as this year’s selectee. “There is no better place on the planet to have this event,” said Williamson. “Our ships, airplanes and submarines would be nothing but steel without the Sailors that begin

their careers right here.” The ceremony was one of the final events for the 11 nominees who arrived at Great Lakes for a week-long visit, Monday. During their stay at Naval Station Great Lakes, Sailors, along with their Command Master Chiefs, stayed busy with tours of the base, group physical training and trips to Chicago. “This has been a phenomenal week,” said Johnson. “I’m a better Sailor for meeting each and every one of you here.”

Guest Speaker, Fleet Master Chief, U.S. Fleet Forces Command, Charles Clarke expressed his appreciation for the First Class Petty Officers nominated. “These Sailors will positively impact the Navy for many years to come,” said Clarke. “I’ll be leaving here with a renewed faith in the Navy, I’ve met our reliefs and I certainly am impressed. Regardless of the outcome, the real winner is the U.S. Navy and the Sailors who will fall under the leadership of these petty officers.”
