Former and current USS Cole (DDG 67) crew members joined relatives, family members and officials, at the USS Cole Memorial on Naval Station Norfolk, Oct. 12, to pay tribute to the 17 Sailors killed and 39 wounded in the attack on the guided-missile destroyer 14 years ago. More than 150 personnel attended the waterfront ceremony under a blustery, sunless sky.

A local Sailor was honored as the Military Citizen of the Year during the 2014 Samuel T. Northern Military Citizen of the Year ceremony, hosted by the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce held at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott, Oct. 9. Electronics Technician 3rd Class Jasmin L. Lamanna, stationed at Naval Computer & Telecommunications Area Master Station, Atlantic Detachment (NCTAMS LANT), Hampton Roads, was chosen as this year’s honoree for her dedication of volunteer work in her command and community. “It feels so incredibly awesome to have been nominated and actually win this award,” said Lamanna. “I can’t tell you how grateful I am.” The ceremony is an annual event where one local service member is recognized for his or her personal com-

Sailors and Marines aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5) departed Kusadasi, Turkey, Oct. 7, after a scheduled port visit.

As the U.S. Navy remains ever vigilant, taking the fight to the enemy, recent media reports have highlighted potential risk from information carelessly or inadvertently shared on social media. There has also been a steady stream of reporting on criminal and other malevolent cyber actors who seek information using hoax emails, also known as phishing, to gain access to finances or other sensitive information.

Safety and security are always the highest priority for the Navy and therefore the recent reports on social media risks and new or recycled phishing scams do not necessarily mean there is an increased threat. The Navy, however, can never let its guard down. Private, personal, and sensitive information could become available to adversaries or criminals via social media or phishing if service members and their families do not practice operations security (OPSEC). To avoid disclosing private, banking, and other sensitive information publicly via social media, Sailors should keep in

mind the following five things: 1. Never share anything online you would not tell directly to the enemy. 2. Never post private or personal information. 3. Assume any information you share electronically will be made public.
