Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. John M. Following the completion of its review earlier this year, the Navy announced it will modernize all rating titles for Sailors with the establishment of a new classification system that will move towards occupational specialty codes similar to how the other services categorize skill sets.

Local ship prepares for HADR The aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) gets underway in preparation for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) for Hurricane Matthew. Tropical cyclone condition of readiness four is ordered for all Navy installations in the Hampton Roads area as a precautionary measure. Tropical cyclone condition of readiness four means sustained destructive winds of greater than 50 knots associated with a tropical system are expected within 72 hours.

“Bells Across America” rings at NAVSTA Norfolk By PO2 Justan William Naval Station Norfolk Public Affairs NORFOLK

Naval Station Norfolk (NAVSTA) and the Gold Star Program conducted a Bells Across America ceremony for fallen service members at the David Adams Memorial Chapel, Sept. 22. Bells Across America is a memorial event to honor and remember fallen and deceased service members, bringing together the military community and survivors to commemorate the lives and service of the fallen. “The objective of this event was to honor the Sailors who lost their lives serving and also show the families of that we will never forget the sacrifice that they made for their country,” Gold Star Coordinator for Fleet and Family Support Center Mid-Atlantic Region Raymond Cunnikin said. America for Fallen Service Members where the names of the fallen were read and a bell tolled to honor and remember them. The Navy is proud to recognize the sacrifices of our fallen service members and the Gold Star families left behind through these coordinated ceremonies. NAVSTA Commanding Officer Capt. Doug Beaver provided remarks at the ceremony. “First, I would like to say that I cannot even begin to imagine the pain of losing a son, daughter, husband, wife, brother, sister, mother or father while serving their nation as a member of the United States Armed Forces,” Beaver said. “But I do want to say, thank you. Thank you for raising and supporting such fine people … someone brave enough to sacrifice their lives for the love of their families, every American citizen and the country they love.” » See GOLD STAR | A7
