Ike’s sea warriors, again, brought sunshine to local kids, Sept. 25. One day a week for the last year, Sailors assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D.
Eisenhower (CVN 69) (Ike) have been volunteering their time by mentoring children and adolescents at a local YMCA. In August 2013, Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Equipment) 2nd Class Robert Vann, from Columbus, Ga., learned through his sister that the William A. Hunton
YMCA in Portsmouth, needed someone to continue their “Boys to Young Men” program for at-risk area youth. One phone call later, Vann was in charge of keeping the program going. More than a year later, Sailors assigned to the Ike continue to donate their time at the YMCA
every Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. Like several other Ike Sailors who volunteer through the program, Vann grew up without a father and understands how valuable the moments of interaction can be for the young men.

Bataan Sailors assist school in Dubai By MCSN Caleb Strong USS Bataan Public Affairs
DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
Sailors and Marines from amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5) volunteered to assist Bradenton Preparatory Academy (BPA) in a recent community relations (COMREL) project, by moving supplies to help them prepare for the upcoming school year. COMREL projects are events where Sailors and Marines can volunteer while on deployment or in their homeport to aid the local community. “We got the chance to help the faculty and staff of BPA prepare for the start of school, so as they welcome new students and their families in, they’ll have a little bit of a head start,” said Lt. Hardy Owens, one of the chaplains aboard Bataan. “Now, they don’t have to worry about furniture and where it’s placed and they don’t have to worry about not having enough books ready.” When Sailors and Marines walked into classrooms the teachers immediately asked for help. Heavy lifting was

MOTORCYCLE ROAD WARRIORS, LISTEN UP Navy Installations Command Public Affairs WASHINGTON
Recently Sailors may have heard rumors that the Navy’s motorcycle training courses were no longer being offered or that there was a prolonged gap. Not true! During the month of October motorcycle safety training courses WILL be offered, but on a limited and first-comefirst-served basis while new instructor schedules are secured for the new fiscal year. Sailors interested in taking a

class may still sign up through the routine channels of visiting the ESAMs website and checking with their local installation safety office. Additionally, during this interim period Sailors who are qualified instructors who may be interested in volunteering
to teach may coordinate their availability with their local installation safety office. Volunteer instructor courses will also be posted on the ESAMs website in the usual manner. Courses will focus on Basic Rider Course (BRC) 1 and 2, the Advanced Rider Course (ARC), and Motorcycle Sportbike Rider Course (MSRC). “Each command has the option to request surge training for a specific number of students, at a specific location, for a specific type of class,” said CNIC’s Safety Director, Rick Maiello.

Recent blockbuster, Into the Storm, paints a horrific picture of the destructive nature of tornadoes and the intense and devastating effects on those in their path. Hollywood aside, everyday survivors have a true understanding of the reality of needs in the aftermath. Many may have been like the majority of us once –- believing “it will never happen to us,” “it won’t be that bad,” “we’ll survive,” but they would be the first to say that more of us should follow Ready Navy’s guidance and have an emergency preparedness kit on hand. “Not having at least a three day supply of food, water, and other essential items leaves individuals and families vulnerable and tests the limits of community resources,” said Dan DuBois, JBPHH Emergency Management. “When Iselle and Julio were approaching Hawaii, store shelves were emptied by folks picking up supplies in reaction to the storm. They faced long lines and shortages.” During hurricane season, which lasts from June 1 thru Nov. 30, Ready Navy and the National Ready Campaign recommend consolidating the following basic supplies in a bag or bin for a portable emergency supply kit: ■ Water-at least one gallon per person per day for at least three days ■ Food-nonperishable food to support everyone in the household for at least three days (Include canned goods with low salt and high liquid content.) ■ Manual can opener ■ First aid kit ■ Prescription medicationsenough for at least three days ■ Dust masks or cotton Tshirts for every member of the household to help filter the air ■ Personal sanitation supplies-items such as moist towelettes (one container for every two people in the household), garbage bags, and plastic ties ■ Flashlight-one flashlight for every two people in the household ■ Battery-powered or handcrank radio ■ All-hazards NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) weather radio ■ Extra batteries-sizes and quantities based on flashlights, radios, and other items in kit)
