Remembering sacrifice: Gold Star Mother’s Day By MC1 RJ Stratchko Flagship Military Editor NORFOLK

On the last Sunday in September, Gold Star Mother’s Day is observed in the U.S. in honor of gold star mothers. This year we are observing Gold Star Mother’s Day on Sept. 25. Gold stars represented each loss and a blue star represented family members still serving. “On this very special and significant day, we express our love and sorrow to all of our gold star mothers and their families whose sons or daughters gave the ultimate sacrifice while serv-

ing our great nation,” Commander of Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Rear Adm. Jack Scorby said. “While we honor the mothers on this day, it is really every day that we recognize you and all our gold star families.” First created by Congress in 1936, the name “Gold Star” stems from the tradition of families placing a service flag in their window of their homes. The service flag had a star for each family member in the Armed Forces. Living servicemen were represented by a blue star, and those who had lost their lives were represented by a gold star. » See GOLD STAR | A7
