BURGER DAY – MORAL BOOSTER By MC2 Carlos M. Vazquez II USS Arleigh Burke Public Affairs

I love what I do, and I know the crew appreciates it. I never would’ve thought that something as small as burgers could bring the crew together.” -Culinary Specialist Seaman Isaiah Harris

USS ARLEIGH BURKE, AT SEA

On Wednesdays, at about lunchtime, you can find Sailors assigned to the guided-missile destroyer USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) waiting in a line to place their orders for hamburgers, not just any plain hamburger, but one that is cooked fresh, in front of your face, with toasted, handmade buns, however you’d like it. A savory taste you can only find at 31 Knot Café, the ship’s galley; a catering you can hardly find at your favorite local hamburger joint, even if you knew the owner, and a request almost impossible while ordering at your preferred fast-food chain restaurant. One of the many Sailors you can find standing in that line wrapped through the passageways patiently waiting with a watery mouth is Sonar Technician (Surface) 3rd Class Michael Dispenza assigned to USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51).

Twenty Sailors and four Marines from Navy Public Affairs Support Element (NPASE) East participated in a community relations project (COMREL) with Norfolk’s ForKids charity, July 30. Service members participated in landscaping and cleaned up a local housing project at one of the ForKids locations. As part of their volunteer project, the group of volunteers picked up litter and conducted landscape maintenance. Established 26 years ago, ForKids provides transitional and permanent housing for 175 homeless families

daily in the Hampton Roads area. “A lot of what we do is driven by volunteers,” said Dwain Jackson, ForKids operations manager. “One, it allows us to operate with lower overhead and have that help. And two, it invests [our] volunteers in what we do and invests the community in what we do. I’m always amazed at the passion they bring to it.” “We couldn’t do what groups can do in an hour with just one person. Dwain couldn’t do what you guys are about to do in a whole day and you guys are going to have it knocked out in a couple hours,” said Rachel Newnam, senior development crew chief of ForKids.

The Office of War Information was created in 1942 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and it used numerous tools to communicate to the American public. The World War II effort included many messages designed to support the war effort and to further demonstrate the United States’ commitment to winning the war. “Ready for anything – thanks to you!” The message may be 70 years old but its meaning isn’t lost in time. The ability of the American public to overcome seemingly insurmountable problems rests with our readiness to face those threats head-on and to take positive action to prepare for them. It rests with our resiliency. Ready (Ready.gov) was launched in 2003 as a national public service announcement campaign designed to educate and empower Americans to prepare for and respond to emergencies including natural and manmade disasters. The Ready Navy program complements that effort. Disasters continue to occur, and yearly each event seems to break a new destruction record. In 2013, there were 7 weather and climate disaster events with losses exceeding $1 billion each across the United States. These events included five severe weather and tornado events, a major flood event, and the western drought/heat wave. Overall, 109 people were killed with damages surpassing $7 billion. This had significant economic effects on the areas impacted. Disaster or disaster-related losses can affect any person or community. Diseases such as Ebola or West Nile, bombings, public and military base shootings, wildfires, water shortages, and flooding and wind damage all lead to large-scale consequences for our Nation and our communities. We must plan for the best and worst case scenarios, but failing to have a plan is planning to fail and that is just not keeping with the Navy can-do attitude. Ready Navy encourages you to make a plan – formalize your emergency preparations by completing a Ready Navy Family Emergency Plan so that everyone in the family understands what to do, where to go, and what to take in the event of an emergency. Unit or activity level emergency action plans help ensure mission assurance and the welfare of the troops. Whether on active duty, reserves, civilian employee or family member, you play an important role in ensuring the welfare of our homeland. Our focus in WWII was no more important than today. We can do this – we can Stay resilient and stay Ready!
